I use a cheap angle grinder in a vise and a 4 inch tile blade to pre shape my rocks. Saves a lot of wear and tear on your rotary tool and bits. Just a suggestion.
I love how you using the marker to make the shape . I have my dremel set up so I use water with it saves you on the bits unless you use the harbor freight ones and just buy new ones there pretty cheap . I recommend suva buts they have all kinds that really help
Nice work! Have you though of investing a tumbler? In that case the rough and jagged surfaces would've been gone all you would need to do is shape out the heart. Since you'd be doing most of the carving by hand the tumble time would be only enough to round the stone.
Oh lord. This is beautiful but please, don't grind dry. Silica dust is terrible for your lungs. You can use a plastic tub under a dribbling faucet (as you don't want the dust going down the sink, long term it can damage the pipes. Usually it's safe to dump outside unless the rock contains toxic elements.) Or, use a bowl of water, at the very least. In addition grinding dry will wear your bits out way faster. Rocks you are carving will also be more prone to fracture due to heat stress. The only downside of carving wet is having to be mindful of keeping it away from the motor of electrical tools. But it is still necessary. Edit: Just thought of one more thing. Fine shop dust is flammable, even silica dust or fine metal shavings. If it accumulates it will become a fire hazard. Even regular sparks coming from a dremel motor could light the dust and cause a fire.
They are diamond burrs, I got mine from Canadian Tire. Any cheap set will work good. Here’s the link to them on Canadian tires website if you need to find more information on them. www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/mastercraft-50-piece-diamond-mounted-point-rotary-set-0545513p.html#srp
Hello!! I have a huge question and for this... I need help!! I bought a dremel sometime ago... And its been good... But at the sametime annoying... Which is frustrating cause I can not enjoy the process... I do not know what I am doing wrong or if its the tool its self... Reason why I am taking the liberty to ask a few questions. Is there a reason why a bit will loosen up and move from the position it was needed? (Even when I tighten it up hard?) This is the main one. I use water to prevent the bits to over heat (that is good right?) I need help to identify the right bit for the right rock type... Cause I would see videos and for me I have the right bit... But then when Ive tried them out... It does not work. 😥 I would appreciate the input... Thank you.
If your bit is moving you probably need a new pArt , I forget what it’s called , but when you remove the black piece , under it us a part that holds your bit. That can get worn and loose and will result in the bit moving . Water is definitely good , helps the bit cool down . And makes your bit last longer . Make sure you have a splash protector or cut off protector to prevent water getting in the motor . A drip is really beneficial . Don’t over do it . Water can cause electrical shock . Look for carbide . That is truly the best in my experiences.
It probably took around 3-4 hours, the quartz in the granite is very hard so it slows down the process a lot. The quartz is also rough on the bits, I think I used up two bits on this carving. The lighter you push on the rock the longer the bits but the trade off is the carving will take way longer to complete. It really depends on how aggressive you are with them. Hope this helps!
It’s a rotary tool, I’m using it with diamond burrs. The specific brand of rotary tool I’m using is Dremel, but other brands will work fine. Thanks for watching! Hope this helps!

Yeah exactly. The grey one is battery powered and has fewer speed options. The battery would die quickly and it didn’t have as much speed as the black one. The black one is corded and has a faster too speed with more precise control over the speed. The grey one is not really meant for longer working sessions, more used for quickness and portability. I hope this helps, thank you for watching!
@@notlocked4734 I'm thinking about making some guitar picks out of stones, bone, and wood. Hey great video man! Do you have any idea how to carve an obelisk? I'm searching the net and cant find anything on it. I plan on getting into stone carving and sculpture but I want to start with obelisks and pyramids.
I’m glad you liked it! Since it’s would be hard to explain how to carve an obelisk I’m going to try and film me making one to show how I would go about it. Hopefully I can get it done sometime in the next two weeks for you.
I just wanted to come back and let you know that I haven't forgotten about making this video! It is taking longer than I expected, but I do still plan to get it up as soon as I can! I'm sorry for the wait!
I got one river quartz like a ball and have no idea how to carve into what. Would appreciate if you can provide fb account where I can learn more from your art. Thanks
Be prepared for the quartz to take a long time to carve as quartz is very a hard material. Therefore it would be smart to carve something close to its current shape. I haven’t set up a Facebook account for my channel yet, but I will link it on my channel when I do. Thank you for watching!
I saw you changed bits during the video but I think it was because you wanted a different shape bit. Did you ever have to change bits because they got worn down by the granite? Or do they typically last through several stones?
The way I’m doing it here will wear the bits down quite fast, a bit should still last for a couple stones. It is better to keep them cool by having the stone in a water bath, it also helps to keep the dust down. If they are properly cooled they should last a long time.
That's cool, nice work. How'd you know it was granite? I would never have guessed that. I so wish I could identify the millions of rocks I pick up and collect. lol
I’m not sure what it smelled like, make sure the smell isn’t coming from your carving tool. When carving don’t push to hard with the Dremel and also make sure to wear breathing protection.
NotLocked yeah mine smelt too. Could be combination of Dremel, the bit and the stone material. Also what cream or water were you using with the last bit ? And why? Thanks!
I was using a polishing disk and some compound that came with a set of Dremel bits, I don’t think it really did much more then just sanding to a high grit.
Many videos I've seen advise to use water to keep your bit and rock cool. What's your opinion? I'm a big time newb so any info or advice is welcome. Thank you for having this channel! You do nice work
It’s a good idea to use water, I haven’t been because it gets to messy and is harder to film, but I will keep trying it out and see if i can find a way to implement water. Thank you for watching!!
It’s some polishing compound that came with the some Dremel bits, it didn’t seem to work too well. For later carvings I’ve been just using some kind of sealing spray. Just to give the surface a little shine
