GL 1800 driveshaft failure

This is what a failed U joint on a GL 1800 Gold Wing looks like, it had about 200,000 miles on it, and the grinding noise was horrible when riding even at 35mph.. I was lucky that it didnt come apart before I got home; it could lock up the engine and cause a wreck..

whats in them bags ???????????
Honda expects them to go that much. Some of us won't hit that, ha.
So what the secret of getting that kind of mileage on the tires?? I make sure I am always at factory OEM recommended pressures and 14,000 to 16000 miles is max . What your secret??????? What brand tires???
Желаю всем в 80 лет такого здоровья, что бы так же ездить на голде, круто, очень круто 😎
I am working on a Gold Wing book and would like to interview Phil. Can you tell me how to reach him?
@prterhorst6204 email me your address or phone # and I will send you his #.. . kentonkloos@yahoo.com.
This is not the highest mileage Goldwing not even close.
Honda says they should be capable of a million miles. Why would we think otherwise. Cool story.
How did he do it, he would have had to do 260 miles EVERY day for 7 years, considering that this is a 2022 video???
He rode in Florida every year November-April. 500,000 miles after 5 years yes, 274 miles/day average for 5 years straight. The Wing now sits at the Honda dealer in Lima Oh with over 767,000 miles, retired January 20, 2023. And it still ran fine, just used a pint of oil every 500 miles.
@@kentonkloos3490 November - April is only 6 months, he would then have had to do almost 550 miles EVERY day for 6 months?
Allow me to spell it out for you.. Rode 274 miles a day average year round, 6 months in Florida, and 6 months in Lima , Ohio. 274 miles x 365 days = 100,000 a year x 5 = 500,000 miles.
@@kentonkloos3490 my apologies for misunderstanding, but you should be more exact, November to April in Florida is six months. You made no mention about riding in Lima, Ohio, only that "it now sits at a dealer in Lima, Ohio".
Legend
I'm 71 years old and ride a GL1800. I can't stay in the saddle long enough to log 600 miles in one day because my body aches too much! It's mostly my neck and between my shoulders.
How many miles now?
444,950...running on 5 cylinders.
@@kentonkloos3490 nice! I just bought a 02 also with 50k super awesome motorcycles!
So for every 3,160,556 miles ridden there is a motorcycle death. Which means this young man has a very long way to go yet.
Wow...I didn't know u could Manuel clutch on newer models
Honda makes the forever bikes, like no other company on the planet.......Period!!! Good job. Nice to know that mine could reach that on a DCT.
How do you even put that many miles on it. That's a Ludacris amount of driving.
This is Kenton who does his vids. He's a maniac! Rides 274 miles a day average for 5 consecutive years to hit 500,000 in 5 years. He loves to ride, and has the time and money to do it. Currently has 121,000 on his 2023 Wing .
3 1/2 years and I’m at 42,000 on my 18 Goldwing. Hope I can get 100,000 a year when I retire💚. Still got another 22 years for that though lol.
Would have been nice to see the bike!!!!
I am quite surprised that he’s happy on it, after SO many miles on the previous generation. Overall mass of the previous version is much for suited for hours on end. Thanks for introducing him to the world!
100K Sounds like Phil's just breaking her in, but all that in a year should get you a monument! Wow!
You are the Man !!!!!
Yes he is, watch my video 2023 Honda Goldwing, 100,000 miles
What brand fork boots did you put on the front end?
Im unsure which brand, since its been 10 years, but I did buy them at O'Reillys Auto Parts.
Nice van man
What tire pressure do you run on your wing?
never mine I caught it in the video. Thanks
8000 mile oil changes? That seems really long… 5000-7000 kilometres is when I change mine…
I agree, but that's what the Owners' Manual recommends. And it does not recommend synthetic oil. I followed that advice from Honda with my 2002 Wing, using mostly Valvoline conventional motorcycle oil every 8,000, and my #5 cylinder had low compression, and started fouling the plug at a mere 359,000 miles...
My Harley has 106k miles and it did it on the road.
It’s took 10 years. But it’s ready for the next 10
It did it on the road, versus what, dirt paths, gravel ?
@@kentonkloos3490 Didn’t you watch the video? The driveway on a stand is what was shown. And Yes, my bike did it on all your options. Just none on a center stand.
@@michaelalbert8474 I made the video. Your comment seemed to imply that Phil put more than 1/10th of a mile on the centerstand. We did it on the centerstand , as I said in video, so I could film it clicking over to 100,000. He does not waste gas by racking up miles by running the engine on the centerstand.
@@kentonkloos3490 We will all have to take your word for that. I saw a dude hit a perfect shot from the cheep seats at a basketball Arena without looking.
This guy rides!
Does he still have the orange helmet?
He had a blue one, he wears a white one. Unaware of an orange one.
wow i hope my 23 bagger last as long ??!!!
Which brand of bagger do you have? With regular maintenance and 5,000 mile synthetic oil changes, it should last 100,000 no matter what make you own.
I have a 22 Goldwing bagger and wear my tyres and brakes out in eight thousand miles ! riding it in a sporty manner and I still average 50 mpg (us) here in the UK.I would love to know what mpg you get. Is your bike a 6 speed? Richard Cottingham UK
Awesome
Congratulations!
Wow on a 2023 you live on that bike I just bought a 2018 DCT with a CSC trike with 14,300 miles 8 wings 3rd trike
Double darkside from 0 miles?
That's awesome
you talked about the moonshine lunch. Will that happen in 2024? cong on the 100,000 miles
Riders will be there. Its not an organized, Official Moonshine Lunch Run as in years ago. I heard that there's a commerative Terry Hammond bench being installed. Probably at the Moonshine Store.
What a legend with an incredible history. I agree with another commentator, Honda should give him a new bike.
One would think so after 767,000 on his 2015 . But I think Honda doesn't want people to know that the Wings last 700,000 +.. They want you to think that they're about shot after 200,000...go buy a new one! Allan Zahrt rode his 1975 Wing 1,000,000, and Honda was generous enough to buy him a Honda hat AND a book about Gold Wings.
You’re probably right.
How your bike do 45,000 miles with just the same tire? Mine did 12,000!! Let me know what brand you use. Thanks.
Agree!
I believe he has solid rubber tires, and changes them when the rim is touching the pavement😂
I would say keep up the good work, but I take it he finished work up quite a ways back. I admit seeing the 99999 turn to 100000 looked odd from the standpoint of watching the Speedo go 35-40 mph, but the bike seemed stationary… but as the video progresses I get it. Good going! Stay strong. I’m no where near that, but admittedly am in between 150,00-200,000 lifetime miles. Looking to get to 100k on my 2022 wing! JT
I think you mentioned his tire brand once before, thanks again. I have 2018 DCT
Impressive. Certainly for all us “old guys” who have been riding for years and are looking forward to many more. All the best Phil.
Man, that's a ton of Miles in a year
I don’t know how you guys ride those tanks, they weigh a ton. But congratulations are certainly in order. 💥🎉🏆👍 I have subscribed.
Bought my 2018 in '19, Only at 57,250. That's Gangster! Big props To You from NYC.
100K would be amazing on a 3 year old bike. In one year? Incredible beyond belief. Mine is a 22 (purchased in 2023) and has 4500 on it. Stay safe and keep the rubber down.
Congratulation! I will do the same with mine!
Nice to know I can get 100,000 miles without changing the air filter. Thank you!!
Just wow!
Back in 1962........ That's. Wenn i"m born! That is really great! You have all reasons to be proud! Stay Save - Lovely Greetings from a Goldwinger from Germany!
Honda or one of the big aftermarket Honda accessories dealers should get on board and sponsor a real gentleman like this. I mean, all they need to do is sponsor his rides with fuel, tyres filters, etc. companies like Traxxion, wingstuff, etc. Good luck, young man, to the next 100k miles of safe riding
Man! Super congrats. He gets a pass to Iron butt club no question.
