3 Days on the North Coast 500: Whistle-Stop Adventures Around Scotland’s Iconic Route
Join me on a whirlwind 3-day journey around Scotland’s legendary North Coast 500, packed with breathtaking scenery, iconic stops, and hidden gems! With limited time, I had to make some tough choices but managed to cram in a little bit of everything. Starting in Falkirk, I kicked off the adventure with a stunning drive through Glen Coe before reaching the official NC500 route.
Day 1 took me to the charming Applecross, where I stayed overnight after tackling the infamous Bealach na Bà. The next morning, I visited the awe-inspiring Corrieshalloch Gorge and drove on to Durness. There, I explored the eerie beauty of Smoo Cave under the cover of darkness and enjoyed a night by the beach at the cozy Sango Sands Oasis.
On Day 2, I followed the dramatic northern coastline, making a quick pit stop at Melvich Beach to meet my son and his girlfriend, before continuing to the "northernmost" point of mainland Britain, John O’Groats.
The final leg featured the fascinating Whaligoe Steps, where I marveled at the history and views of this tucked-away coastal spot. Then came the long but scenic journey back south, winding down the A9 through the Highlands to return to Falkirk.
It’s a rapid but unforgettable tour of one of the most spectacular road trips in the world-don’t miss the highlights, travel tips, and incredible landscapes!

Happy Christmas G!
I don't understand that bit of the route either. It would make more sense to make the existing route a diversion for those who want to avoid Drymen, and have the official route head up the old Gartmore Road at the Clachan to join back up with the current route. I love the Clachan - the food is excellent and they're very accommodating - I turned up once when a kit test walk had gone wrong |(my waterproof jacket was not waterproof). I was soaked to the bone and they still welcomed me in even though I'm sure my jacket left a puddle! I quite like going up Craigie Fort, though it was better when the view wasn't as obscured by the trees.
@@sueKay The Clachan is a favourite stop for me. A wee treat to end day 1. G♥️🏴

Whaligoe Steps - There used to be 365 steps - one for every day of the year, but the top ones were vandalised in the 50s or 60s, and they lost a few, I think. If you can trace an old BBC Radio "Scotland out of doors" and their NC500 tour, there is a lot of usefuil information in there about the steps. Great video, thanks!
Found it - if you google "scotland out of doors nc500 leg one" and locate the audio from 2019, then the part about the steps is at 46 minutes in.

Hoping you can give me info. I'm cycling from rowardennan to crianlarich on Saturday. Been told to take the high rd but wondered if you can give me more info on where the high rd meets again and is it all cycleable?
@@81bozzaboy Hi. The high route is perfect for cycling. The low path joins to the high route just beyond the Rowchoish Bothy. Here's a pin drop for Google maps. Hope this helps. G♥️🏴 maps.app.goo.gl/Fr51sCRRGpbmvJqB7
@@81bozzaboy It's worth noting beyond Inversnaid Hotel there are a number of sections you'll need to carry your bike. Good luck with your adventure. G♥️🏴
@redmanwalking74 I should have mentioned it's an e bike. It's quite light as far as e bikes go but still heavy in comparison to a regular bike. Do you think it's still possible?
@81bozzaboy That's certainly going to make it trickier. As I've not attempted e-biking that section, I'd hate to give you any advice that could put you at risk. You have the option of getting on a Ferry from Inversnaid to Tarbert. You can then cycle along the road to Beinn Ghlas Farm at Inverarnan to rejoin the WHW. The road is quite busy so care is needed. Also just check the ferries as they're not on all year. Good luck with the planning. G♥️🏴
@redmanwalking74 yeah I've already looked at the ferry and it's not running.
After you avoid the right turn up the hill and go straight along the loch, how long is it before the WHW joins back again? 1mile?
@@leahcummings3903 Not even. You'd be lucky if it's half a mile. Get wee bypass. G ♥️🏴
Great wee film. We're going to walk the WHW in 2025. As we have been up Conic Hill many times before, the bypass route will be just fine early on day two.

Hi mate, new sub here. I've just finished watching the full series and loved it. Me and my mate are doing the WHW next May (the first week) and whilst I've watched loads of peoples videos I've learnt so much more from your video's than anyones. I've just been booking all our campsites this last weekend and watching your videos I'm so excited to get on the trail now. All the very best, Dave.
@@DAoutdoors Very kind of you to say. I'm so glad you found the vlogs useful and I'm excited for you. It's a trail I absolutely love. I'm back on it at the start of April. Stop using the camp site !!
@@johnmccarron I was just in a bit of grump on the day this was posted. This is one of, if not the best site, on the WHW. Having spoken to their manager, the no early entry rule is to keep the folk who have booked safe. It allows them to monitor who has arrived and flag anyone who is missing. Just take your time and get there a little bit more leisurely. 😊 G♥️🏴
Great vid pal. How long to walk from car park to lochan nan cat
@@gavstar12345 If memory serves me right, a couple of hours. Definitely worth the walk although the top part is quite boggy until you reach the lochan. Thanks for watching. G ♥️ 🏴
We went through Conic Hill, no baggage transfer, each carrying our own tents and stuff. I won't say so much as I regret it, but it'd been wiser not to do. One of my trail mates couldn't finish the WHW and I blame it partially on going through Conic hill.
@@migueldeluis5507 If you're able to, Conic Hill is a fabulous challenge. If not, it's good that the option of the bypass route is available. Thanks for watching. G ♥️ 🏴
I always want to watch these videos but find myself getting bored and not finishing. Yours is over and hour long and I enjoyed it thoroughly and found it genuinely helpful, and it was engaging because you weren’t talking at your audience, but being conversational, I even took notes, thank you!
@@To-ingAndFro-ing Brilliant. Thanks for the very kind words. I'm glad you found the video useful. Enjoy your adventure. G ❤️ 🏴
Did the WHW 15 years ago, maybe less, guy called Chick - referee in the Glasgow leagues - was on his 13th trip!
My trick was to skip Blackwater, grab some lunch in town and then tackle the hill out and cut a good few miles off my last morning with a wild camp.
When we hiked the trail a few years back, we took the high path. We continued on from Inversnaid that afternoon and that part of the trail is ROUGH. If we had been finishing the day at Inversnaid, I would have done the low path.
@@MrShooter72 They both have their good and bad points. I've never attempted the whole of the Loch in one day, so I csn only imagine how tough that was. Thanks for watching. G ♥️ 🏴

Which is better between the 2 Vern's, this one or the single wall cotton type one ??
@@The_Arby Can't honestly say. Single skin tents in calm, cold, damp conditions will aways have condensation on the inside. Double wall tents give you a barrier from that wet surface. They're well built tents. G♥️🏴

Going up Conic Hill wasn’t too bad but coming down on those steps was hard on my knees. Thankfully I had two walking poles that made a huge difference.
@@BTurner. I'm with you. I find descending much more of a strain on my body than going up does. Thanks for watching. G ♥️ 🏴
Shame you couldn’t go on as planned but no shame in calling it. No one wants to hear of missing people (or worse) on these magnificent walks. I’m doing the WHW in January as a 50th birthday adventure BUT am well prepared to not be doing it in equal measure if the weather is forecast to dangerous extent.
@@dkbt1 On this trip there was no pressure to do the last day. Hopefully the weather will be kind to you. Thanks for watching. G ♥️ 🏴
I enjoyed the climb up but the steps did havoc on my knees. I thought I'd injured myself at one point as the rest of the day I was getting sharp pains. Thankfully it went away. I'm not sure I'd do it again - just getting old! I did climb to the summit too and found it extremely slippery. Big coachload of children made it very noisy though!
