Bernard Purdie also does that with rack toms, so he mounts his smaller tom to the right before the floor tom. He describes why he does this on one of his videos.

The first guy I ever saw do this was Joe Cusatis when I was in High School when he did a clinic/concert then, later saw Buddy on TV do this to a ridiculous level. More recent guys I've seen use this are, of course Colaiuta and Weckl. They will do Right hand with the bass drum and seamlessly switch to Left hand and back within a phrase which is totally nuts. The thing with this is that it can easily turn into a wanking novelty if not used musically.

Both these gentleman are fantastic players and teachers as many of us know! This is a great interview, thanks Hannah. I believe both of these guys will go down as the pioneers of drum set - (Jazz) education. When we look back on these times maybe they will be up with the greats like (Reed-Stone-Wilcoxon) and how to apply those fundamentals to the (Modern Drum Set) ! Congrats to you both!!!!! Tim Froncek :)

Hi, that's a great video, thanks. Can I bring to your attention a contribution by Peter Erskine, to which I am sort of attached, since Peter has been my drum hero since very early on. Generally, Peter is against any form of spang-a-lane, or as he puts it, playing the ride pattern as a 'three-note grouping'. And also he advises starting with very even quarter notes, and then developing a different phrasing options, accenting 2 and 4, of course, but also accenting the off-beat notes, and-of-2, and and-of-4, which he puts with Elvin Jones style. What do you think? Here is the video: ua-cam.com/video/fYSFMeT4LxU/v-deo.html
