Good evening Alistair, wonderful, some stunning views there. As you say it’s a steep old pull up Knott Rigg from Newlands Hause. Is the pass back open now from the Braithwaite side or did you approach it from Buttermere side? All,the best Dave

Sambo's Grave is very much part of the history of Sunderland Point as far back as I can remember. It certainly has been a tourist attraction going back to the 19th century long after it was a port. The slavery aspect seems to be the focus these days, ignoring the fact that fact that press ganging was widely used in the navy back then, with at one time half the sailors being forced labour. Cabin boys used for menial tasks on board ships, were also usually not slaves and could be as young as 8. It was far more common to use slave boys for domestic service at that time and there are those who suggest that he may have been transported for that purpose in mind. Seemingly the account of this being the burial of a slave cabin boy is far from being a definite historical fact, and as far as I know there haven't been any attempts to confirm the contents of the grave, if any remain. It's a tale that however, that serves to keep the memory of this quiet corner of Lancashire as a former commercial port alive today.
I would count all none eden valley stones plus Long Meg of course. Much effort would have been made to to bring them to the circle.
@@wgj4813 indeed, the effort required to construct some of these Neolithic monuments is just one of the aspects which intrigues me. Thanks for watching and commenting, cheers Alistair 👍

Really enjoyed that Alastair. I know it’s something a bit different but I love it. Really like the new scooter - I’d love one of those 😁👌♥️ So sad to see the building left to rack and ruin in that last mine that closed, as they look of a good old age and it’s only been closed 25 years.

@@PhilipOlsen11 that's interesting Phil, I never thought of it like that. It's certainly pretty old , legend has it that Uther Pendragon (King Arthur's father had it built) Sir Hugh de Morville owned it in 1170 . He was one of the men who murdered Thomas Beckett. Cheers Alistair 👍

Wiki showed me an air view of Castle Folds. That is really one massive and impressive construction 🎉. Thanks for taking us there. One thing though I would be interested in, where was/is the next water source?
@@medievalladybird394 it's a good question and an interesting one. Today the closest water source is actually a weak spring inside the stone circle... about 1 mile as the crow flies! The geology is of course limestone, here in Westmorland there are numerous "dewponds" perhaps they collected water using similar methods...of course we also get more than our fair share of rain!
