Our visit to Wells Bishops Palace and Gardens - A true hidden gem
Our tour of the Bishops Palace and Gardens at Wells starts with an exterior look at the gatehouse and moat on a glorious summer afternoon in July.
However, the next day when we visit, we have the other sort of summer day; the one with rain.
Undeterred, we step into the Bishop's palace and explore 800 years of history, making our way through the various rooms until we reach the Bishop's Chapel.
Braving the weather, we step outside into the gardens formed inside the remains of the Great Hall. Only two walls survive, and now we have a wonderful manicured garden.
We climb onto the rampart walls, and we get views of the moat, Wells Cathedral and a hazy view of the Mendip Hills. On a clear day, you should be able to see Glastonbury Tor in the distance.
A wander on from here to the gardens around Wells Bishops Palace, before we step out of the walls and alongside the moat, past a small waterfall, were we discover a family of swans.
We now step across the moat to more of the gardens, we have 14 acres to discover, but we will amble our way around a large pond to find the three sources of Saint Andrew's Wells. Our tour of the Bishops Palace and Gardens at Wells will conclude here.
Thanks so much for watching, and we'd love to hear from you so please leave a comment and don't forget to subscribe so you don't miss any of our travels: 🟢-

Great video, I lived and worked in Cyprus for 12 years so explored a lot. But please, can you fix the "Pathos" to the correct version of the name... You can use Pafos or Paphos, I've often seen holidaymakers call it Phaphos after a 2 week stay too 😊 Thank you! I'm not having a dig at you, I just like to see it right 😉 We always took our visitors to the archaeological park. Great place!

Guys, That is no problem. Helpful advice is always welcome, I struggled to see where I had made the error; I know during the production, I seemed to get it constantly wrong, but I thought I consistently referred to it as Paphos throughout the video; the subtitles and description, and I couldn't see the issue - Then I saw the thumbnail! How, after two and a half years had nobody else mentioned it! I fixed it now, thanks for letting me know, All the best, Gary & Janis

@@OurWorldForYou Hi Gary & Janis - excellent. It's #perfect now and thanks for not taking any offence. I foloow you on Twitter X but only subscribed after catching a link to your account from a post and of course, natural curiosity took me to your Cyprus playlist. I shall have a look now to see what other goodies you have to offer! Myself, I tend to stick to UA-cam shorts - I don't like being on camera and just don't have the patience to provide voiceovers, especially with a Lancashire accent which never produces clear subtitles ;-) We're currently looking at a different place to visit from Benidorm as we're familiar with the destination and a winter trip means we will want to be out and about. We've visited Villajoyosa and Alicante so we're toying with taking an overnight stay around Denia during our 9 nights in the early part of winter. Cheers, Shell

Hello once again, and thanks ever so much for yet another splendid video walk - the gardens are just super don`t you think ? I was slightly surprised at some of the interior looks of the Bishops Palace - the rooms have had a substantial makeover since my last visit - somewhat on the bright side, and ever so slightly Victorian Gothic for my taste, but still sumptuous and elegant !!!! Thank you both for braving the inclement weather too - appreciated :)

Dave, That's always the challenge, and Janis manages that so well, as I do the still photography. Normally, there's a fair bit of editing too, and a careful selection of shots, and sometimes you just have to go with the flow. To be honest, we've been three times, and it won't be our last (Helps Westerham Brewery is just around the corner too!), and if you like history, don't forget to check out Quebec House - It's in the video 'Our visit to Westerham in Kent, and a look around the National Trust Quebec House' - ua-cam.com/video/V38GdDCAqtc/v-deo.html . Major General Wolfe is an overlooked figure, but he's remembered in monuments in so many places. I loved your video on Westerham; it's great to see how we all create our content differently. I'll drop a comment shortly. All the best, Gary & Janis

I love Romney Marsh but especially Dungeness. I remember it being for sale and if I had enough money I would have loved to own it as by the whole scene of things Idont think it was that much money, not quite sure what I would have done with it but tried to keep it as it was, just a little tidying up.However it does make me wonder why EDF have bought it ,why would a French company be interested it Know of many places that are supeosedly owned by foreign investors and there is often an ulteiria motive linked to money, which we can end up financing and that's not good for our fragile economy

    • @OurWorldForYou

Hi Tim, Dungeness is special, such a magical place. Like you, I agree that the Dungeness estate should not be 'private' hands, actually it's owned by the French State, as EDF is wholly French. I do wonder why we can't have a British State-owned energy company, but now we're wandering into politics. At least it's possible to still explore it freely and explore the magic that is Dungeness. All the best. Gary & Janis

Maidstone was bombed in WW2 otherwise it would likely look better. It has a thriving live music scene in the town centre pubs, buskers, rehearsal spaces - but Covid and drinks price rises have not helped

    • @OurWorldForYou
      @OurWorldForYou 19 днів тому

I think that's true of so many places, but the southeast worst, and then we didn't have the money, nor the will to restore it to, so some pretty poor decisions were made - but that's the past, and we still have some decent buildings with history. Our pub scene is under threat, and I think the Pubco's share the responsibility for this - Like supermarkets knocking out greengrocers, butchers & fishmongers, still some that will tell you that's progress. I think pubs should have to display that they are part of a pubco, but when you see the same generic beers on tap you soon get the idea! Anyway, we should champion the independent pubs like The Rifle Volunteers by Goachers, find them an love them. Anyway, thanks for watching the video, hope you enjoyed it. All the best, Gary & Janis

I agree one of my favourite areas ,there are many other good places in Kent but you do have to pass through some not quite such good places to get to them. For my sins in my younger days I was Kent car rally champion, luck comes to mind ,but I always tried to be careful ,however one slip of concentration on Romney Marsh nearly lead to gong into one of the famous dykes fortunately I stopped just in time, phew!, the only trouble was I was pushed back on the road by tree women who took great delight in reminding me about it, and I think it cost me three breakfasts at the finish of the rally. Great memories of a great place and a great video. Thanks!

@@OurWorldForYou Ok, these buildings - in part - might be lots older. If you examine the cellars, and the cellars of the cellars in the circle (near the crescent) for instance. And the entryways on the cellar level - below the current entrances... It might indicate before some kind of crazy event which created that (dumped that much stuff as a cataclysm for instance), as no normal person would build like that. Ground level seems to be raised by a lot. There are stories about this / staff / servants / But this fully buried and half buried is a much more international phenomenon. What happened "after", was it just for the taking? Free? If you want to be sure - start digging with a shovel. (I was there last week - inspiring - did not feel royal at all). Basically I do not believe any of the royal stories. Probably they just took it, refurbished and established / founded the current system (see their word choice?). Not Built.

Hello, Gary, Janis, and thank you for this additional video of Wells Cathedral - and isn`t it simply tremendous !!!! The scissors arches are an interesting architectural feature are they not, providing the additional vertical support considered necessary - I seem to recall that the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral also utilizes this particular type of architectural support under it`s bell tower - both strong and attractive :) I was very pleased to see that you were able to film inside the cathedral library - I, together with a colleague spent quite some time perusing a number of their interesting manuscripts - a little while ago now, but to see that there still remains examples of the ' chained ' books was quite satisfying indeed ( for me ) !!!!!!! Thanks so much once again - top shelf as always, in every way :)

@@OurWorldForYou Hello Gary, Janis. How lovely, to have a few weeks in France, and so kind of you to have me in your thoughts whilst there. Yes, France still does have some stunning medieval history, some original, some reconstructed in a fairly faithful way.My own abiding memory would be a three day visit some fifty odd years ago - a couple of us history undergrads accompanying a senior lecturer who bewailed that so much had been lost - once thriving monastic centres of learning and important houses of manuscript production reduced to crumbling and semi deserted buildings, due, mostly to an inability to attract sufficient funding for essential repairs. However, that was fifty years ago, so no doubt much has improved over the passing decades - but they were often a sorry sight. Thank you so much for your interesting response - much appreciated, and take care :)

Hi Kevin, Sorry for the delay in replying. We've just gotten back from a beautiful couple of weeks in France. Now, this has nothing to do with you coming to the end of winter in Australia - just remember what an English winter is like (But at least we have a proper Christmas dinner - none of that 'on the beach' stuff.) I'm really glad you liked our stuff; it's nice to hear it makes people a little nostalgic. Where else would be your old haunts? Perhaps you can give me some inspiration for another little road trip later this year, or maybe early next? Anyway, thanks so much for stopping by and taking the time to comment, All the best, Gary & Janis

The railway lines were used by the fisherman to move there catch from the boats to the road. The block houses you didnt mention were part off the pluto system in ww2. The Britania being one of them albeit being modified. For many years there was the beer wagon which had very wide wooden wheels for going across the shingle - since the concrete road were put in by the army in ww2. The army used the estate for exercises. One section coming across the beach and attacking the defenders in the block houses. The rusting relics were the winches used to pull the boat up from the sea.

@@OurWorldForYou The NZ Winter ??? Ah well, we have just been exposed to a very cold system straight of the Antarctic Ice shelf, more pronounced in the deep south, but cold enough. Fortunately short lived, so survivable :) Mmm, Hot Fuzz ???? please elucidate - was I correct in assuming a movie, or perhaps a popular tv series - or even an alcoholic drink ??? The cathedral library, as I recall, held some absolutely exquisite examples of illuminated manuscripts and some rare and important letters and correspondence, although I suspect the later are most likely within British Archives by now. Wells, the stunning cathedral alone is worth spending considerable time in, although I found, as with so many historic places of worship, the antiseptic white interior a genuine disappointment, as the process has removed nearly all aspects of it`s medieval past, which would have been a riot of colour and splendour. No matter, there are also some pretty fine traditional pubs in the city - perfect for drowning one`s sorrows in - ha :) Thank you once again - keeps the memories alive !!!!

    • @OurWorldForYou

Hi, Indeed Hot Fuzz is a comedy movie - (www.imdb.com/title/tt0425112/?ref_=nm_flmg_t_61_act) Written and directed by Edgar Wright, who grew up in Wells. It has a wonderful cast of British actors including Jim Broadbeant, Olivia Coleman, Simon Pegg, Paddy Constantine to name but a few. It is also a beer, brewed in celebration by a local brewery, to commemorate the film. There will be two follow-up videos for Wells, One on the Cathedral and the other on the Bishop's Palace and Gardens, arriving in the coming weeks to cover the details I had to skip in the main video. Anyway, we are enjoying the mixed conditions that is a British summer, All the best, Gary & Janis

Ironically, I'll have to watch this later because I' m currently in Wells, about to drive to my current home near Axbridge/Cheddar, 25 minutes away. Erith seemed like an odd choice being on the banks of the Thames, officially still in Kent then, but so close to London. My late father used to tell of his childhood getting chased off bomb sites, and once got a whipping after he was caught at the site of the wreckage of a V1 trying to salvage a little bit of memorabilia. That would have been in Welling, not too far from Erith. We just got back from the British Normandy Memorial, overlooking Gold Beach, with Juno to our east, the Canadian beach. Sounds like you'd has a life. I (Gary) was born in '67, and you were just settling down. We've been to Hong Kong ('97), San Francisco ('02 & '06) and Montreal ('10) but Japan is still on the wish list, and never been to Western Canada, still there's plenty of time. I do love our Anglo-French History and recently came back from Dives-sur-Mer, where William the Conqueror left for England on that fateful day in 1066; it is a fascinating place, in fact, the whole of Normandy, and our intertwined history. @@OurWorldForYouyes it is interest history and I agree about the French origin of Cinque but not how it’s pronounced locally. Did you know that some of Norman Armada tried to land at Romney (there was no Old and New Romney at the time) but were beaten back. There were later repercussions after the main landing and battle of Hastings. Which is also partly why the church in NR is so big. I think one of William’s relatives took an interest (Bishop Odo?). The church was originally one of five. Also badly flooded in 1287? during storm. This is why the steps to church lead down due to build of sediment/shingle around church. Can still see the flood level on the pillars in the church.
