What's The Best Hardware To Power Your Home Assistant System?
If you're thinking of starting a Smart Home and using Home Assistant then deciding on what hardware to use is one of the biggest decisions and perhaps the most important one to make.
In this video I'm going through just some of the many common options you could choose to install Home Assistant on to. How much they cost and what you might need to buy extra to get going, and lets not forget the experience level you might need to get it all running.
Getting it right first time will save you the job of upgrading later on but equally you don't want to blow your budget leaving you with little left to buy all the great Smart Home gadgets to play around with.

Lenovo mini for me. Way more processor than needed but has nvme drive, is quiet, no noticeable fan noise, low power usage, upgradable.
Excellent, thank you BoG. Home Assistant has moved on in two years so some ferreting around required to find the equivalent info. Most significant change to get MQTT working was the server config entry to get rid of the 502 error. Now needs to be in the format "server: mqtt://nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn:1883"
I've got HAOS running on a HP T610 AMD G-T56N 1.65GH THIN CLIENT. I changed the 16 GB ssd to a 160 GB a spinning disk and it runs just fine. At the moment it's only got 2 GB ram but I'll upgrade this to 8 GB next year so that once I really start adding smart stuff to my home it's not going to have a problem running everything. And the best thing is, only paid £15.88 delivered complete with the PSU.
Yes those HP thin clients are a wolf in sheep's clothing, seeing them used in so many projects lately. Great price as well👍
What aboug the linknlink isg gateway?
I'd already recorded a lot of this whilst reviewing the iSG Display Max but absolutely that would sit in this list and I've added it to the links in the description now.👍
AFAIK, there's one article about SATA port multipliers - the one about it causing a second drive to fail when the first fails naturally. On AliExpress there's a case for four disks that connects to an external SAS connection. The company used to make an 8 drive but it's hard to find. It's not an expander backplane, though. Do you think that port multiplier error affects SSDs also? Thanks!
Don't muck around with underpowered devices.. Run it on an Intel NUC or equivalent like a Dell micro PC...
PROS & CONS for both really, just depends on your needs and your end game. However they are cheap enough not to ignore and are equally low power as well.
I hope this gives you some idea of what you can run Home Assistant on and if you enjoyed the video then don't forget to LIKE and SUBSCRIBE to the channel

I have a few Wiser digistats but no hub. The digistats support bluetooth but just provide 1-channel "I need heat" control to a separately. managed heating system. Would I still need a wiser hub or would this not work?
I'm not sure this will work, this system uses a ZigBee network to communicate rather than Bluetooth but maybe someone else knows something different to me
This is a brick on my wall, at the moment the iSG dashboards that come from the onboard HA only work if you use the onboard HA. The updates on iSG HA are slow and no addon store except if linknlink set one up for you. Its not really working for me, I've got a Pi5 in a Pironman5 case thats awesome, I can display my own HA on the iSG but the iSG constantly freezes so Ive given up for now.
I *think* actionable notifications are built-in to HA Core now. I’m using it and didn’t have to install anything special. I might be missing some context , though.
Ok I'll have to check that out, would be great if it is.
Some of these look quite nice, but Personally I despise slider cards, as they are annoying to operate. The state card might be nice to hide my thermostat cards when its summer. though for this I use a currently basic calender based automation
I can see lots of uses for the state card. I think the slider cards work well depending on use, they can be annoying when you're trying to get an exact number - so much easier just to input the value.
@@Byteofgeek What I find annoying is that the doccumentation for Calender based automations is barebones, where I can trigger a event based on {Event_name=XXX}, instead of a main trigger, haven't found how to do this yet. else I would make 1 automation list Calender, to trigger everything
What do you think of these dashboard controls? Are you going to use any of them with your Home Assistant? If you enjoyed the video then don't forget to LIKE and SUBSCRIBE to the channel
Sounds like a good option for many average smart home users. Higher tech with time on their hands might want to can go to home assistant and a build your own option. This looks like a good path for me.
I think solutions like this and Home Assistant Green etc. are ideal for those that just want to get going with something out of the box. It's not perfect, but it's all moving in the right direction. Not everyone wants to spend hours in front of a computer tinkering away to get the simplest of things done.
Hi, what about using a google home to voice control the wiser on home-assistant and not have to pay a sub?
So compared to other cameras… this is pants. Back to the drawing board for me
I have 16 8tb drives all refurbished drives from ebay. 1 seller got every drive they sent me back because my external 4 bay raid 5 drive would not accept them, 8 drives total did not work until I found another seller and only 1 drive had to be returned. I have had the drives just over 5 years and only had 1 other drive fail. The price is the main factor for me because I backup everything.
This is a no-go for me. The hub and and internet connect is weird. I'm not in the switchbot ecosystem, which makes this worse. I wonder if there's a zigbee or native matter (no hub) remote out there? Thanks for the review.
The hub requirement isn't going to be for everyone and I've fed my thoughts back to SwitchBot on this. If you've already got a hub though then it's a good option. I have seen a couple of other remotes on AliExpress, not sure they're ZigBee but there are some out there.
I can't get mine to work with home assistant on the zigbee2mqtt, I see many like you just copy and paste and it works, well not for me... it sort of works then crashes I was able to add one sensor (aqara temp sensor) that will not read anything, sys incompatible, and it will just randomly stop, I got it going again using some tips here, but still won't read the sensors anyway. I have heard some doing fresh install of HA, well I don't think I am going to do that, as this zigbee was a new addition so I may just forget about spending days trying to get it working. I've got other things working without issues, not sure what's going on with this?
Stuff like this can be frustrating, assuming you've done the core and Zigbee updates to the latest version? Have you tried reaching out the SMLIGHT tech support, they're pretty responsive from what I've seen. Aqara devices can be problematic on any connection mainly because they don't strictly adhere to ZigBee standards, I paired a temp sensor just two days ago and it's already dropped off the network whereas everything else is rock solid. Have you got any other non Aqara devices you're able to try?
I have an issue with my own one earbud isn't connected to the other and is on constant "pairing but nothing is happening anyone knows how to fix this?
I would love to see Switch Bot and home assistant get things going better i can definitely see the switch bot remote become the remote that takes over harmony elite and harmony hub spot but in order for them to take that spot adding home assistant cards like harmony has is definitely a top feature needed I keep seeing some other remotes that pair with home assistant and will even take and use home assistant to control devices that are setup into home assistant and be able to control them I am hoping Byte of geek if your able to get the new remotes that are out and do a smart home face off challenge with all of the new universal remotes and do a comparison on which is going to be best for the people using home assistant that would be awesome Plus if you have other eco systems like Google or alexa or apple home kit and homey we can see a face off between all 5 and really see who is at the top for smart home eco systems in 2024 and 2025
I'm sure it will happen, their mini robovac started out the same in Home Assistant and got a huge functionality update the following month and works great now. I agree, the potential for this remote with full HA integration is incredible so fingers crossed. Yes I've seen some of the other remotes, mainly on AliExpress, and have considered getting some of those for comparison 🙂 All your other points are noted 👍😀
Does it work with Tizen based Samsung tv? I failed to learn NETFLIX & Prime command in Broadlink integration.
Yes mine is a Tizen based Samsung and although the templates offered didn't work it did learn the codes from the remote and worked fine. I probably could have looked up the TV as well as a lot of Samsung TVs are supported.
I bought one last prime day but I haven't opened the box yet. I also bought the new Sofabaton x1s and started the setup but I didn't finish it when it didn't find my 12 year old TV and i had to look for the original remote. All of this in the hope of replacing my Harmony Elite
Whilst I was filming the video the remote got a big functionality update so it'll probably be quite different from when you bought it. One of the other nice things about this, which I didn't try, is that you can set up a device without the remote which might come in handy with that 12 year old TV, assuming it's on the supported list 🙂

I know now that I am not going to upgrade
can i ask something?
It not ready yet.......lot of bugs
Yes it does have some issues, I highlighted some of the those that I had spotted in the video. However the team are either already aware and are fixing or have fixed them, they seem to be pretty quick to resolve things.
So true, mine is an original kickstarter, and I've not got much enjoyment from it, keeps freezing.
@@cyclemadkiwi I wish I brought a geekom mini pc no more UA-cam influencers for me.
@@gijane9375 I love my Pi5 8n a Pironman5 case, 250Gb ssd! Fast!!!!
That's interesting, and is yours the same model as I reviewed? I used this for quite a while whilst reviewing it and having it lock up wasn't one of the issues I encountered.
Guessing that a smart TRV will not necessarily be needed for the same room that the thermostat is located?
You can do but be aware that the room will heat up when other rooms are calling for heat as there is no way for the system to automatically turn off the TRV if heat is not required.
Great review. I'm looking for options for my elderly mum who doesn't have the internet. To this would be perfect.
Thank you, helped a lot 👍
Really helpful video. Could you please point me to the forum post you referred to or explain how you wired it? I have the same ESi stat I'm changing to Wiser and scratching my head a little on how to wire it. Thanks in advance
I think it was this post, if not then it was certainly that forum www.diynot.com/diy/threads/swapping-esi-esrtp4rf-to-a-smart-drayton-wiser-with-an-ideal-logic-c30-combi-boiler-single-zone-one-channel.622029/
Fantastic, that is Exactly what I needed, Thanks mate
Thank you so much. What speeds should I expect from my NAS unit
Lets open the box only to see nothing... Who are you trying to decieve? HA is the platform, you build the universe uppon, not the end product. You develop the integrations that compute all interesting stuff for you and this does require some silicon... I tell you that a single NUC is not enough for 500m2 house, and you claim that some cheap chinise tablet can be the 'heart' of some smart home?
Not sure where in the world you're from but the average sized house in Europe is 120m2 which is more than capable of being controlled by a single NUC and a device like this so 500m2 is, well, pretty huge. If range was ever a problem then surely you'd add a booster just like any other network?
So equivalent to a Pi and a display. Doesn't seem groundbreaking to me. No audio, no LEDs, no buttons.
Not quite 🙂 It has audio, just not demonstrated, it also has built in ZigBee which obviously the Pi doesn't have. It also has infrared remote control but I don't have the remote to be able to demonstrate. Agreed there's no LED and no buttons, not sure why you would need buttons? LED possibly to show that it's on maybe? What were you thinking of specifically? Sure you could cobble something together but not everybody wants to do that or has the knowledge to be able to do that. This is an option for those that prefer another route 👍
There is only a long list when I go to HACS. There is no "Front End"
The frontend for HACS has changed since that video was recorded, now when you go into HACS if you click on the Filters button on the TOP LEFT you can choose the type of thing you want to see 🙂
@@Byteofgeek But none of us know anything about what we want to see, because many of us are just beginning HAOS, so we don't know terms or phrases other than what the guide tells us. It's like a non-starter if there are not updates/revisions (at least the part(s) outdated in the video)... And not because we want to be stubborn, or not compromise... ...But because most of us have little to no context.

If I had $1,000, I would choose to spend $100 on a bag to store my $900 instead of spending $1,000 on an empty bag kislux
I have bought brand new and refurbished and have had the same luck with both, I don't use raid or anything, I use JBOD on OMV, works well for me 😊
I have been using 4 20TBX20 Seagate Exos HDDs for a little over 1 year now and so far have had no problems with them and I'm not even sure if it was refurbished or resel the hard drives were in mint condition nothing on them at all not even the slightest fingerprint and thay are working like a charm. I paid roughly 300€ ~ £250.
That's a good price for such a newish model whether they were new or refurbished 👍
Does the Wiser work locally? So I can not connect it to my internet and just control it through HA? I don't intend to use a wiser app/create an account or anything other than HA.
I haven't tried it but I think you're going to need an account to add the thermostat and TRVs. The hub is capable of working without the internet but I've only seen the mention of pressing the button on the hub in this manner.
The thing what kills hdd is high temperature! In your video it shows at 55C!!! That’s not good, really not good. Next time put fan right at them so they’re not exceeding 45C -that’s already plenty hot! Good video otherwise-very informative
Thanks for watching 👍 The EXOS drives do run a bit hotter, I believe 60C is the temperature to stay below for them. They had a fan pointing at them after that was recorded to keep them a little cooler 🙂 They sit comfortably at about 47C now in the NAS even when there's lots of activity.
when buying these drives ... should always buy an extra one put it in a cheap usb enclosure and attach it to your NAS then use it as ADDITIONAL extra backup for your important files only (so its used daily) if a drive fails in the nas can repalace with the spare straight away whilst you wait for the RMA'd drive then put the repalcement in the now empty usb enclosure... and so on ....
Good advice, another one I've read recently is to not fill all of your NAS bays - certainly this would have helped me when replacing the drives. You live and learn 🙂
And then you should be backing up off site as well
Hi, just came across your channel, do you know if this has the ability to connect to the Yale Smart Alarm and TP-Link Tapo products via automations? I want my sensors to trigger the alarm if motion is detected or dorr sensors open inside - currently can't do it in Alexa or Google Home. Also can all products work with each other or are there limitations? Thanks for your help !
Hi, there are official Yale and TP LINK integrations in Home Assistant, I don't use Yale but a quick look at the integration suggests you can arm and disarm the alarm etc. I'm not sure about sounding the siren though but in theory what you're asking, cross device interaction, is exactly what Home Assistant was built for 🙂
@@Byteofgeek Sorry for the late reply but thanks for the info - appreciate it !
What camera do you use?
Currently using a Lumix S5IIx, it's a lovely piece of kit 👍

Thanks, I figured some might find it useful as a lot of HA users back up to a NAS etc.

Absolutely, ssds have their place but they cannot compete for large volume storage unfortunately whether that's new or refurbished drives
Interesting watch. Been contemplating a NAS for probably a year now. I was thinking second hand box and spending as much as I can on new large capacity drives, but this give more food for yet more thought!
Thanks for the feedback. I've always bought new myself and thought it was frowned upon to buy refurbished/renewed but it doesn't seem that way and the cost vs capacity can make it appealing
Very well spoken, informative content, and great production value. Cheers for sharing mate, this was a great watch!
Thanks, hopefully something useful in there 🙂
