HSBA Garden Railway
United Kingdom
Приєднався 10 гру 2020
The HSBA Garden Railway is a G Scale garden layout based in Jersey, Channel Islands. Over 138m (455ft) of track navigate through tunnels, over bridges and past the pond in a garden in the parish of St. Mary.
Started in 2021, the railway is result of a husband and wife team that wanted to do something a little different in their garden. A mix of a childhood dream and passion for gardening - it was a perfect match

Nice garden railway, I expect you are looking forward to spring.
Just found your channel & have subbed. You have a very thoughtful layout plan. Looking forward to watching the other episodes. Colin.
Any experience with the e curved one? I noticed my Harz loco (lgb 2080s) does not like the frog or some place close to it, it get pushed out of the rails, bumps a finally gets back in place. In the other direction (from the single track towards the frog) the front guide wheel get pushed out. The same thing happens with my marklin gauge 1 BR 78 when pulling a heavy load. All my gauge 1 and LGB freight and passenger cars run totally fine in both ways. Also I have bought the straight long switches, they run just fine.
Not the ones from TL45 - just the Piko ones which in had some problems with - but mostly with them holding the gauage/spacing. I can't think of similar issues I've had. May be worth posting on gscalecentral.net to see if others have?
This is a great topic to cover
Thanks Mickey. I hope it was interesting for you. Next one is on power and control!
I initially never used rail clamps. But after about 5 years the fishplates began to fail, not conducting current properly. This became evident when my points became unresponsive (they take power from the track to the decoder). They were particularly unresponsive when my locomotives were working up the steep gradient. The railway clamps saved my railway, and now all point work is reliable l, with no power drain to affect the points.
I honestly thing the death of most garden railways is reliability issues - people get annoyed and frustrated and, understandably, give up. Did you use conductive grease in your fishplates when laying the track?
I didn't use the paste, as I naively didn't think there would be a problem. Turns out it caught up 😂
Taking notes here. I made a few mistakes when I built my garden railroad four years ago and it has been sitting idle for over three years. It needs a major overhaul and these videos are giving me ideas as to what I need to do when I resume my railroad. Many thanks!
Hi John. Thanks for watching! Sorry to hear your railroad has been idling but happy that you’re planning to resurrect! I think with this hobby if you ask 10 people how to do something you’ll get 11 answers (a quote I recently heard from @ThatModelRailwayGuy) so this is just my experience. That being said, I’m happy to share. If you’ve got specific questions, feel free to ask and I’ll do my best to help. Welcome back to the hobby! 😃
Thank you. I really appreciate the videos since they start from the beginning. Ive been in N scale for ages but have collected G scale for quite awhile too, and now that i am older I think that it will work well for me. I am also an avid flower gardener and live in southern california. I will do a raised track plan around and in the existing beds, I think i will do battery powered too. Its a bit more money and converting locos can be a challenge it just seems easier to me in the long run. Thank you again for the videos..I.look forward to viewing them all.
I’m glad you’re finding them interesting, Lyndon. Thank you for watching. I’m actually the other way round. I’m in G but have a very small collection of N which I keep meaning to do something with 😂 I very much enjoy the gardening side of things too although most of my plants are fairly hardy. Using the existing beds I find make a fun / interesting challenge (just like the real railroads!) I considered battery but generally happy with how my railway performs so will stick to track powered DCC. I also think with the number of locos I have it would be cost prohibitive now and too much logistics to keep them charged. Let me know if there are any particular topics you’re interested in me covering.
The first railway I built when I lived in the UK used fishplates with soldered wire jumpers across the joint, the soldering was tedious work as it takes time and care to get sufficient heat into the rail. For the one I’ve built recently, I went for rail clamps With the ballast, all my track is free floating in the ballast, however, in some areas, ballast has been used to create some track height and here I will go back and use some resin bonding agent to minimise maintenance from the movement of the ballast by the rain
Yeah, I've heard similar. You also need a reasonably high-wattage soldering iron to get it done, too. I think it's an option (and much more cost-effective), but I'm happy I went with the railclamps too. Resin bonding is an excellent idea. I hadn't thought of that. There are a couple of places that would be valuable on my layout. I'll need to look into it to check for any risk to the plants/ground around it. I hope you enjoyed the video, Martin!
If going that route again, I would use a gas soldering iron
Yeah, I agree with that
This is so helpful I'm building my my first garden railway
Thanks Andrew! That's great to hear so I hope it was useful. What size/scale are you building?
@hsbagardenrailway LGB scale G
@hsbagardenrailway 1:24 to 1:29 Scale
I do not know what size building to use tbh
Mine is 1:22.5. I use stock from LGB and buildings from Pola G and Piko G. I believe the USA has a couple of other manufacturers that go to 1:29 scale buildings
Super Aufnahmen! 👍👍👍👍👍 Liebe Grüße Peter
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Very nicely put together video. Really interesting hearing your design process. Looking forward to future episodes. Thanks, Jim
Many thanks, Jim. Appreciate you watching and I hope you enjoy the rest of the series!
Super video, really interesting.
Thanks Rob! Glad you enjoyed it
In your opinion… are these as good as LGB?
This video is due an update - having had them outside for a couple of years they're okay but they need additional work. I found another problem which is the electrical contacts under the switch aren't soldered but screwed requiring extra maintence. Looking at prices now (Jan 2025), these switches are €69 vs €89 (LGB) - those are without motors. If you want motors, assuming an LGB motor drive that's +€38 (€105) vs LGB all-in €129. So it's about 17% or €22 cheaper per switch. Are they 'as good', I'd probably say no. I've definetely had to do more work on them than with LGB and that has been a slow learning curve. However, I've got the point now where I know their issues and have addressed them and they work fine. Would I recommend them to friends/other modellers. I would for -certain- individuals - those looking to save money but with a list of recommended tweaks/fixes they should make before using them. If they're willing to invest that time (and have the skills/interesting to it), I think they're a good addition. Sorry, long answer but I hope it helps.
Thanks for taking the time to put this all together! It will help us younger folks when it comes time to build out our childhood dreams. An unsolicited tip: can you make the audio in stereo? I am only getting your voice through my left headphone.
Thanks Mickey - not a problem. I hope it was interesting/helpful. That's great feedback - thanks for sharing it. It was a mistake I made in the past with a previous video but I had forgotten about the issue. I know how to address it for future ones.
This was great! Looking forward to the next video.
Glad you liked it, John! Thanks for watching. Part 2 will be coming soon!
Excellent video, looking forward to the next installments! I love your passion for promoting the hobby to a wider audience!
Thanks Paul! Glad you enjoyed it. To be fair, just following a line of other folks that I think laid the groundwork for it. There is something special amazing OO/HO and N content out there. Nice to add a sprinkle for us G Scalers too :)
@hsbagardenrailway I really wish it could be as popular in the UK as Europe and even America.
Yeah, I've never really understand why it isn't. My assumption was a combination of space (smaller UK gardens) and a lack of British models in G?
Found you on IG a while back I can't believe the timing for this ! I am planning on building my first layout this spring this is exactly what I've been looking for! Thank you @gerry327
Ahh! Then I’ll need to make sure I keep up. Thank you for the kind words - I hope you’re enjoying the content on IG The Build one should be useful too! It is only my experience (there are naturally lots of ways to do it and I don’t claim to be “right”). Hopefully you’ll be sharing your journey too!
It's all my mother's fault - when I was 4 she took me on the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe's _El Capitan_ from Kansas City to California where the Navy had sent my Dad. Sorry mateys, but this Navy brat now likes trains better than boats. 😆 And still does.
Nothing wrong with that. My grandfathers were in the RAF (Royal Air Force) but I was more a train rather than plane kid so I get where you're coming from.
Am I the only one whose interest in model railways didn't deminish in their teenage years? You hear about this in the hobby a lot. 😂
There is at least one more. 😄
For me, it did. However, that interest was rekindled while living in Berlin and walking past a model-railway store!
Train sets are popular for Christmas and gifts
Absolutely! Still enjoy getting a 'big red box' under the tree.
Brilliant!
Thanks, Keith!
cool, it is a nice garden railway. I think sometimes the domestic planning permission is harder to get than planning permission from the town council!!
I've been lucky that hasn't been an issue but it's definitely a discussion around trade-offs!
@ I have a 160m loop around the garden, all at ground level. I’ve got domestic planning permission to elevate two station areas to save me having to bend down. A Paternoster will get installed in the garage at some point to make storage easier
What a great report. Garden and railway looking lovely!
Thanks Rob. The morning was a little dreary for filming, but the evening had the right ambience with the Christmas lights! RE the garden: Plants had a great summer as it was fairy rainy here in Jersey which I think has translated well.
Yaay!!! LGB steam in action !!
It looks great when it's running!
Nice review. Have you ever tried Theil points?
No, I haven't Martin. Only TrainLine45 an LGB. I believe Robert from @SUMMIT RAILWAY uses Theil on his layout though.
nice
Thanks for watching!
fun
Glad you enjoyed it.
Beautiful layout
Thank you, I'm really enjoying building it!
Wow amazing 👍
Thank you very much! Appreciate the watch and the comment!
Sounds and looks good 🙂. The handrails are often warped on these models. This is caused by picking up the loco and touching the loco . What are yours like . G
Mine had wavy handrails from the start and I got it from new. I replaced the rails with metal with a brass hand rail and fittings from a shop that also specialised in model ships…it made a huge difference. I have a zimo sound decoder in mine, but I’ve never bothered with the sync magnets
I've just got it so it's only had some light running. I didn't notice damage with this. However, with the RhB traditional coaches their handrails etc were VERY warped. I know they were second hand but generally I thought LGB was sturdier than that..
@ some of the earlier ones are terrible. Newer ones seem to be much better
fun
Magic
Fantastic
absolutely epic :) love it! :)))
2:04 Signaller error??
That was my fault :D didn't let my friend (Tom, who was operating the lower line) know I was barging onto it!
Nice cab ride. Despite a rather cheeky Thomas twice trying to go in front of this train! Your plants really look nice.
That was my fault. I just barged onto the mainline without letting my friend Tom know 😂 Fortunately for me (and Thomas), he was paying attention!
That was great! I have a garden layout that has been abandoned at the moment. There's a kids pool and a bunch of large kids toys piled up in it the moment. Once that gets cleared out (hopefully soon, LOL) I'll get back into again. I have plans for an expansion and total rehab of the current layout. You have a layout that has given me inspiration as to how I want to do to mine. Thanks for the video!
Very kind words, thank you! Honestly, the planning was the best part for me. If you're interested, here is the track plan: hsbagardenrailway.com/the-layout/ Rik's blog was extremely valuable generally to me (riksrailway.blogspot.com) but I'd also recommend the G Scale Society (gscalesociety.com) and the G Scale Central forum (gscalecentral.net). I hope to see some videos of your build too!
Awesome, i love the Layout
I'm glad you like it. It's been a lot of fun to build and, now, play with!
Just finished watching a few videos of your garden railroad. That is a fantastic garden railroad. Had to sub.
Thanks and welcome, John. I'm definitely behind on getting an update/tour video. Will try and do it in the next few weeks. Let me know if there is anything specifically you'd be interested in learning more about.
Wery poor video.
Can you provide a little more feedback on why you found the video poor so I can improve it for next time?
Very poor comment
I remember when I was a kid my mother bought us a train and smoke came out of it
My starter set that a loco that did that. In fact, most of the locos I have now also have the feature. It requires a special smoke fluid which is heated and smokes. It's a great feature. Thank you for atching!
A real work of art, well done!
Thanks, John. It's really come a long way and I've enjoyed the process. I just need to get around to doing another update video to show how it's evolved in 2024.
Nice use of suitably sized plants - really effective....
So nice of you. I think a few are getting a little large now so will need to contain them but that's part of the fun of the 'garden' side of things. Thanks for watching
Excellent. A nice ride. The railway is looking great, really maturing nicely! Great to see all the happy people too 😄
Thanks, Simon! Yeah, the plants have really exploded this year. Probably a combo of mild weather with lots of rain. I was less impressed with it but the greenery is enjoying it.
Trains
Nice 👍
Probably one of the best videos I’ve ever seen of a really practical garden railroad. Took a lot of work I’m sure but it was worth it! Nicely done;very enjoyable.
Wow, thanks! That means a lot! It was a lot of work but a lot of fun too. I definitely enjoy the process :) Thanks for watching
Absolutely fantastic well done
Nice assessment. Appreciated!
Sorry for the slow reply, Jeffrey. I hope it was useful. I do need to do an update as I've found another niggle which only manifested after a year or so. Very solvable but something to be mindful of.
Just wonderful 😊
Thank you! Cheers!
