Shoes were traditionally welted to a midsole, then an outsole was attached. Wear out the outsole, then a cobbler attaches a new outsole. Easier job. If an outsole is directly attached to the welt , you could wear it out and wear damage to the welt. More work. A cobbler will have to replace the damaged welt. For the person wearing the shoe, a repair is more expensive.

The sizing guide surely helps! Saw a post on instagram on their tan refresh service boots and they don’t fair well in rain (stain, water leaks into the boot). And the service boots are extremely flexible that you can fold them in half. Are your Indy boots more water resistant and less flexible? Is the grip better on the Indy?

Personally, I've found that when dealing with relatively heavy shoes/boots, which most GYW/stitchdown footwear are, lacking a midsole isn't a big deal for the first 10,000 steps of the day, but pretty soon after that you start wishing you had a bit more shock absorption underfoot.

All of the deerskin leathers called "refresh" are kind of like that with the extreme scuffing. Everyone who's had something in them for a while mentions it. I think it's supposed to be a patina monster-type leather. Personally I don't really get the logic of putting that kind of leather on an Indiana Jones moctoe boot which tends toward a more dressy or smart casual look, but it is what it is. Chinese boots and quality leather shoes in general tend to be wide in the waist and heel compared to American makers, at least in larger sizes. If you have larger feet, it can be tough to get a fit that locks in the heel without pressing uncomfortably against the instep and the toes.

@@barabasgezu Dr. Marten boots use a lower quality of leather, a Bontex footbed, felt or foam padding, and a plastic/rubber welt which is melted to the sole with a "fire knife". The Dr. Marten AirSole is why people bought Dr. Martens. Incredibly soft, bouncy, and comfortable. You could wear them all day; walking, running, climbing ladders, etc. My own experience is that the ones that I owned all lasted over 10 years. None of the stitches burst apart. The corrected grain leather with the top coating of color was actually more resistant to scuffing, and easier to clean and polish. Dr. Marten does not resole the boot. If a cobbler does it, with a leather welt, leather midsole, and some other outsole........ it's no longer a Dr. Marten.

Having a proper leather midsole provides a little bit more support and shock absorption. But it makes a shoe/boot clunkier and a little bit harder to break in. It's the latter point that I bet is key behind Red Wing's decision not to include one with their Iron Ranger and Blacksmith.

  • @Thunk00

I've got a Luos Jiet/XBXS boondocker and a suede moc toe derby on the more formal side. My wife has their brown deerskin "8111" -- can't get her size in genuine Red Wings. I've put a lot of wear on my two pairs. They've got genuine veg-tan insoles and midsoles. Upper leather is nice enough, albeit on the thin side compared to boots from other brands. The stitching and finishing are very neat compared to American and Canadian makers. As for negatives, XBXS shoes are always pretty tough to break in. That's probably because they're pretty heavy for what they are. They also pretty much all develop a squeak, either immediately or not too long after you start wearing them. And they use EVA as a filler in the cavity beneath the insole instead of cork. All in all, I think they're a pretty good brand if you can buy them on Taobao. Most of their shoes and boots are less than 200 USD and their seconds are often around 100 USD, and they're a very good value at that price. They absolutely knock brands like Thursday and Meermin out of the park.

Keep those boots because, they're boots not a watch or a car. As long as they don't have any popped stitching or deep scratches or broken glue. Those small human not imperfections are just that. That doesn't make for bad quality it's just human touch and ass for the leather, leather is skin just as your skin is different in places it's almost impossible to have the exact same grain on each unless they use an entire side to create one pair of boots. And, even then it won't be exactly the same. I totally get wanting quality and I think those are. I could understand being annoyed if they cost $1000 or $1500 or even the $400 that you paid if the things you pointed out were really bad but they're not. They're just human touch elements. If they were custom boots ok I'd be annoyed but, the are mass hand made produced boots. They're just as quality as your other Red Wings. Great review and hope you enjoy those great looking boots.
