Viberg Boots Long Term Review, Sizing, and CXL Lottery?
Great comparison Ryan! Both boots have their own magic, and I do respect both brands.
Great video. Love that you're willing to try new approaches like this. I have a pair of second hand wabasha redwings from eBay that are a tad over conditioned and I'm considering following what you've done. I'll keep you posted on results hehe
I totally agree with your last comment about adding the leather insole. It is really the same and really better than the Redwing construction. Another comment about Ross Anvil. I believe he has gotten to big for his britches. Also, he waists a lot of good boots by cutting them in half. It’s not necessary to analyze boots in that fashion. I much prefer the way that you analyze the difference between two similar boots. P.S. I have owned both boots and currently own the Redwing Iron Ranger. Thanks, Ben Northcutt Birmingham, AL
What strikes me seeing those two boots is how much more volume the Wolverines appear to have. The Red Wings look more sleek. But I bet the Wolverines would be easier to break in and more comfortable. My Iron Rangers are fairly snug! Thankfully they go on fine despite my high instep, but the Wolverines look more forgiving in that regard.
I reconditioned used boots using the peanut oil from my jar :p There is literally no downside for now. smelled for 2 days
You are a kind gentleman.
Lol, I was just gonna call you the Bob Ross of the boot world, then you said it! Great video
Haha! Glad you liked it
Do a review on their leather jacket
So you clean and conditioned them 😂. Not exactly a restoration but looks good. Be careful of exposing the insole to a lot of moisture when cleaning. You prob can wipe with a damp cloth and spray some Lysol in there. Also, not recommend to over condition or oil leather laces. They can loose tensile strength, and stretch/snap when being tightened.
Thanks for the heads up. I changed the title and the description. Does it seem more accurate?
I enjoyed your video. I buy lots of used boots. So far I’ve been pretty happy.
@@YouShoe-1985 shows you can find some great deals in that secondary market.
Inserting shoe trees while the boot is soaking wet will hinder the drying time considerably as the wood cannot absorb that much water and it blocks the air circulation needed for the inside of the boot to dry. It's probably best to allow the inside to be nearly dry before using shoe trees to restore & maintain the boot's shape.
Thanks for showcasing the use of a conditioner on teacore leather! Also, thanks for the idea to condition leather laces. I never conditioned mine. I also washed and conditioned my boots last weekend. Saying that, i used a minimal amount of water with the soap and quickly wiped it away. In addition, I've never considered washing inside the boots. I saw a video once, made bt a cobbler, that showed the corck layer all broken up, with corck crumbs stuck in one part of the boot. He claimed that it was caused by prolonged exposure to moisture. I hope you dried your boots well and fast.
@@motischenker8409 good point
Hi Ryan, I hate to correct something you said in the video but you are one of the best UA-cam boot content creators!😃 This was a great video. I buy a lot of boots on eBay. I've never cleaned my boots this way. This was helpful. I get grossed out thinking about the previous own sweating in the eBay boots. Then I think about all times I've worn gross bowling shoes and that's how I justify it to myself to wear someone else's boots.😅
@@chefrichh thanks I really appreciate that!
Do you own any Beckett Simonon? I am a 12 brannock and wear a 12 in Beckett Simonon and it’s really a perfect fit for my narrow ankles and wide toes. BUT I want to try some other brands. Curious how these fit compared to BS. The “12.5-13” is throwing me off because a half size is kinda a big deal.
@@JonathanGrandtsorry I don’t own BS but have friends who do. I may reach out to them to see.
What is the overall height of this boot? Thanks.
@@Shadeed_Fitness about 6 1/2”
Spasiba, this clarifies much to me.
Wolverine has sales and coupons. Red Wing does not.
The RedWings don’t have a midsole. But wouldn’t it really make them even one tier higher if during the first re-sole you have a leather midsole be added? I want em to be just right out of the box, but, the idea of adding that midsole makes them even more appealing long term.
13:07 Like these videos of older models. Importantly you want to do some interviews get with Ben from Stitchdown interview him first and ask him to help you get interviews to grow the channel. Also steal my idea start doing micro documentaries on the boot companies and find a PNW historian to give you segments. I would do it but my health is all messed up.
The quality of the 1000 Mile does depend on the model and when you purchased it.
Good point
Wolverine 1000 mile is not muslim friendly , due to the pigskin lining.
On fit as well, Wolverine is wider. As a 10E I can wear a Wolverine D TTS, on the #8 last? Forget about it, EE or bust.
What happened to “I don’t have a black teacore”? 😆 I have the 3345 too 🤜🤛
I got a used pair of 1000 miles for 40$ online and had a cobbler resole with a vibram mini lug on it for 80. I really like them.
I love Rose Anvil, but we need more people who aren’t just d-riders who take everything Weston says as gospel.
I only buy the 1000 Mile on wedge soles. Makes me feel like I’m not getting shortchanged when they’re on sale.
Wolverine 1000 Mile Boots and Red Wing Heritage Boots are different boots. Each brand has it's own merits. Weston Kay downgrades any product which will not pay him. That is how he promotes products which do pay him. 1000 Mile Boots and Alden Indy Boots? Bad. Thursday, Rock Rooster, and Golden Fox? Good! Rose Anvil is not credible.
Wolverines have more interesting leather selections and leather soles on most models, and are better looking-but the redwings are great as well. The 1K Miles don’t get reviewed as well on youtube but It hasn’t been my experience that there is one that one is much better than the other- just slight differences. I like this review as I feels it’s most fair and accurate-AMEN!
The redwing for me. I just prefer the leather insole. I think redwing is slightly better in their leather quality.
What leather midsole are you taking about?? That's the outsole that's leather with a pathetic fibreboard lasting board. Plus the redwing uppers are full grain compared to cxl which is technically corrected grain !! This was an extremely opinionated argument you make ,on the basis of your personal aesthetic preferences. Also the clicking of the cxl on Wolverine boots isn't great , you could end up with a ton of loose grain. Oh yeah, that " novice / layman's" argument was the icing on the cake. Jeez man😂😂
You should make a video
@@kartikchary I can't wait to watch your video.
With your subtlety in displaying in expertise and positive winning personality, I’m sure we can look forward great things from your channel. Hope you take a break from great comments like this to focus on that. 😊
Hahaha.... About half of the points here are wrong.... Nice take tho 🤦🏽
I have both wolverine 1000 mile and redwing IR. For me, I really do like the work boot look of the IR but when I want to dress it up a little bit, the wolverine 1000 mile boot is the one I go to. Also, as much as I like the IR, I find the 1000 mile boot fits me better. Great video, keep them coming!
@@tennesseetom8687 thank you!
What model redwing are you looking at? That does not seem to have a bump toe which is why I routinely chose Wolverine 1000 mile over red wing because Wolverine has less the spring.
@@MorganUnfreeman should’ve mentioned that. It’s the Blacksmith model
Oooo that audio upgrade.
@@cowcrapper thanks for noticing!
1000 Mile boots with the leather sole, all day every day!
it's a 270 degree welt and supposed to be like that.
As of late-November 2024, Wolverine has their 1000 Mile boots on sale for 50% off (essentially $200). I picked up a pair in Havana Brown, though my wife said I have to wait until Christmas to open and wear them. 😂😢.
The coupon code is 1000MILEDEAL .
To anyone else interested, I just tried this and it says it is now expired. Thanks for posting though! I will have to keep a lookout. $400 is too much for these boots (I’ll get some Grant Stone or Parkhurst at that price), but $200 and now we’re talking!
@@sschoon86 I'm sure they'll have another sale before Christmas. However, you'll probably have to sign up for their marketing emails to be notified of any new sales on the 1000 Mile boots.
@@jeffe4297 thanks for the advice!
@sschoon86 there will be another discount. It's not even black Friday or Cyber Monday yet.
I’d get every boot in leather sole but I’ve been trapped by puddles too many times (needing to find an alternate path or go deep into the puddle). I know once in a blue moon won’t damage the sole but i just hate the idea of even soaking them for a second. I’m also in SoCal / desert suburb with city puddles (not from rain usually) I also like to do a short run with fresh leather soles in the parking lot. Scuffs them up real good and fast to get the needed traction.
I’m a boot maker go search for Uncle Dan’s Boots. Let me know what you think.
I have 3 pair of 1000 mile boots, I think they feel great on my feet regardless of the materials. Bought them all on sale. I have 3 pair of Redwings and like them as well but they cost more and for the most part aren’t as comfortable.
I own both, I prefer the last on the 1000 mile boots, they are the more comfortable boot of the two. Regarding cost; I recently scored some 1000 mile boots for 140$ Canadian, brand-new in box. It's my second pair of 1000 mile's, but at that price I couldn't justify NOT buying them.
I do really like my wolverine boots looks.
You hit the nail on the head with 1000 Mile being on sale a lot and I personally would never pay retail. My limit is around $250. They may use leatherboard in the heel stack, heel counter and insole but feel their selection outweighs that. RW Heritage doesn't do it for me with options. I have one pair, IR 8111. If those were to wear out, I'd get another pair of 8111s. However, those IR are my most go to boot.
Hi, I watched a couple of your videos about sizing for both Clarks and Grant Stone. Could I ask you a question? If I understand correctly, your Brannock size is 13D, you wear size 13 in Clarks, and size 12D in Grant Stone Diesel. How would you compare the fit between those two? I've been planning to buy Grant Stone for a while now, but I'm still unsure about the sizing. My Brannock size is 10.5D/11D, my Clarks in size 10US fit perfectly, and I wear Red Wing Iron Rangers in 10.5D. Thanks!
Wolverine uses Horween Chromexcel. Some people like that.
@@馬伕 I know I do!
@@YouShoe-1985 It all comes down to your feet. How they feel on your feet, should be the deciding factor. Both are good boots which could be rebuilt. A good cobbler could rebuild the 1000 with a leather insole, and replace the synthetic lasting board. A good cobbler could rebuild an Iron Ranger with a leather midsole.
I guess I forgot t' compare the two before I returned the RW because wrong fit for size. Added half sole t' the Wolver t' save the leather, but may throw off proportion e'er so slightly much. They could be a smidge roomier toes, I guess, but overall I like them what little I have worn. I'm sure I'll recall something else momentarily that seems t' slip the mind...
"Rose" also said the RW was a WORK leather and I thought it was thin compared t' what I expected. The others I viewed more as a "heritage" boot, so maybe I was biased already e'en tho I already had some chrome xl Thirsty boots that likely cost less. [I forget was some coupon sale? I doubt I paid full price for Wolver unlike the other.]
"Heritage", o' course, just means mostly what WAS considered work boots back in the 30s or 40s before all the foam padding stuff was added, which may have started in the 70s or sooner... Except now they cut the corners t' make the heritage boots less "worky" according t' Rose? I think we all know this already, but just in case...
Well, like ye said about the heel stack, the inners o' the 1000 mile can likely be replaced later, too, but might cost more than most would consider worthwhile rather than just replace, etc. [I'm only half thru. Did I give something away there? spoiler?]
Chrome XL is hit-miss, apparently. Neigh my fave, but an easy go-to, like ye said.
Weston does also say they DO last 1000 miles, tho. Some vids he's more pleased than others or something. I didn't buy them first way back when I saw whate'er vid that was because I was just on the market for something less generic at the time, but when I saw them discounted, I figured they were still worth a go and neigh totally hopeless like some other brands he's trashed.
also,, the comparison is often between 1000 Mile and Iron Ranger.. and although the 1000 Mile doesn't have the thick veg insole.., atleast it actually has a leather midsole... the IR doesn't even have a midsole.. i think a leather midsole is a very important component to have.. you can always slip in a leather insole.. but if its made without a mid sole.., you got a whole bigger problem
* see around 11:00 you mention the aftermarket insoles ; ) glad were on the same page lol
@@toneohm Some 1000 Mile Boots also have a leather outsole.
i can agree.. i think the Thousand Mile still has alot of merit/appeal... and they have such a rich history.. its a heritage boot i'd still like to get.. along with Alden Indy,, if and when I get out of my PNW phase lol they even made some Cordovan Thousand Mile models.. they're just harder to find.. Also, I seen one on ebay that featured a Role Club outsole.. looked great.. but I blinked and it got sold.. Thanks for the content! i think your channel has been a nice addition to the youtube boot community : )
@@toneohmThanks I really appreciate it! I’ve seen those Shell cordovan 1000 miles before and they are really nice. With they would run those again. Also, love that Nutshell cover on your channel!
I have a pair of Badalassi Carlo Minerva boots that I've been doming in the Yellow color. Wearing every other day, the color has already transformed from a bright summer squash to a warm, mellow pumpkin with tons of depth. It's a super tough leather, too. The break-in's no joke, but you can't beat it for sturdiness. I literally needed to walk almost a hundred miles in them before any but the tiniest of creases became permanently visible.
One question is the toe box very narrow?
@@imwastedhere seems like the same as their normal captains so it is a bit narrow
