🔧 Budget Car Build | NASCAR Car of Tomorrow Toyota HurriCAMRY
🛞 Today, I began the budget build on my COT NASCAR Toyota Camry, lovingly named the "HurriCAMRY." I performed a complete tear down of the chassis and cleaning. I took an inventory of parts removed from the chassis to see where we stand. I did most of this video without electricity in the wake of Hurricane Helene so that anyone can see with some basic tools and a little know-how you can begin building a great budget track day car.

REVEALING OUR 2023 NASCAR TRACK DAY PROJECT
Danny, Thank you so much for your behind the curtain access and education into what really goes into building a stock car. The quality and detail of your videos are incredible and your selflessness to put them together cannot be understated. I began following you on instagram and could not have been more excited when you started your UA-cam channel. I am just a fan but the education you offer into the cars and industry is priceless. Thank you again and I look forward to continuing along with all your future videos.
You're extremely welcome Brandon ! I'm glad you found the channel and I appreciate your support. Thanks for the kind words, I'm glad you're able to absorb and pickup the content and I'm able to explain it in ways it's easily understandable!
Does anyone sale a rebuild kit for the front and rear calipers
Yes, you can buy them for just about every caliper front and rear.
Another great video, thank you for the effort you put into these videos.
Thanks Tony ! Glad you enjoy this video, I appreciate your support!
I am enjoying this!
Thanks Jeff ! Glad you enjoy the channel and content, I appreciate it!
Fantastic channel. Thanks for showing the inner workings of these cars.
Thanks Christopher! Glad you enjoy the channel and content!
I say this everytime but thank you for taking the time to put out these videos. I may not have the background from working within the Nascar community but my engineering background helps me figure quite a bit and you fill in the missing gaps or give just enough to help push along the research. A couple questions for ya.. When it comes to the torque values, for instance the suspension, are there set values you use or just say "that feels tight enough"? When it comes to manufactured parts, those are likely specified, like the tie-rod ends from Moog. But something like the upper/lower control arms wouldn't be. You mentioned that lower and upper control arms won't work between a Hopkins/TRD/Hendrick chassis. When you say this, do you mean they physically will not fit or you just will never get the suspension dialed in to the measurements you want? For someone who can only make a trip to the Charlotte shops once or twice a year, knowing and planning for the parts needed is a big thing. A video suggestion (just because it would selfishly benefit me) is an overview of the suspension when you put it back together (I saw the Supra one) explaining all the different parts and what impacts they have. Spring helixes and the different degree options, slugs and how they work with adjustments, the different mounting locations on the chassis for the lower arms, upper arm spacers and why you use them instead of just a shorter arm
Thanks, Jason. I appreciate the compliments! When it comes to torque load on bolts, I use a Bowman torque chart for all the suspension bolts. The same goes for ARP and NAS hardware as well as MOOG studs. I torque everything when I finish a car and go down a nut / bolt checklist. I just never film it because it would just be me and two different torque wrenches. When it comes to control arms, several are just dimensionality built differently and articulate differently. Great ideas for video tech portions and I will definitely look into doing some! Thanks, Danny
@@stockcarsurplus That's exactly the small bits of information I was talking about. I wasn't sure if a simple bolt chart is what was used or if there was an industry standard for each bolt. I typically use McMaster-Carr Grade 9 bolts and can use other charts with similar tensile strengths to get in the proper range.
as always, appreciate the detail and behind the scenes look. i only wrench on my '74 Volvo but watching a pro gets me pumped to fix up some bits and grab a new tool to make my life easier.
I'm glad it helps motivate you ! I appreciate the kind words and your support!
I love your attitude! I bet none of your haters could outrun Ty Dillon in a late model.
I bet they couldn't either ! Many hate that I speak my mind and they don't like it!
I love seeing these cars get new life, just like Rhine does as someone who grew up in the gen 4-5-6 era and now works in the sport it's awesome to see the cars I grew up watching still have a good life. Restoring race cars has been something I've wanted to do for a long time. Keep up the good work
Thanks Jacob ! Glad you enjoy the channel and I appreciate your support!
@@stockcarsurplus you're welcome, as someone who's only been in the upper levels of nascar for 2 years mainly Xfinity it's cool to see that these cars get a new life after "retirement"
I appreciate you taking the time to show me around the Rhine shop while you were working. Did want to take up a bunch of your time setting up those nexGen cars been a long time since we were at TriStar together!
Thanks Gerry ! Glad you made it to the shop, it was great seeing you and catching up. It's been way too long since we've talked in person!
What did the Supra scale at for total weight?
Just under 3000 with no lead.
Another great vid! Thanks!!
Thanks Paul ! Glad you enjoyed it!
My wife would have one of the cars up for sale and then have a whole house genny installed! 😂 I don’t wrench on cars, but that awesome cart makes me want to! 🙌🏼
Auxiliary power unit is already in the works!
This is going to be another great build. Strongly agree with cleaning the car inside and out before doing any work. Better to work in a clean environment Than a dirty one. Then you don't have to take it all apart to clean afterwards. Great videos, and glad you and your family are safe.
Thanks for the kind words, I appreciate it! I strongly agree, starting with a clean base makes things easier to install and fabricate!
Allot of feeling at beginning of video. Remember, most if not nearly all viewers are here to watch car stuff, not to hear a have/have not /in your feelings battle royal. Ignore the ignorance.
👍
Im looking forward to seeing this come together. I love your no bullshit style and have learned a lot about these cars watching your videos. I have raced dirt tack cars for 25 years and your 100% right if you want it, you can make it happen. Time not money is the most precious resource when working on racecars. I hope you get to Utah soon for your vacation.
Thanks Jason! I appreciate the kind words and your support! I hope to make it out there in he spring to see my oldest daughter!
Thank You Danny
You're welcome Dustin!
I'm a Boomer, and I didn't sell my generators. We loss power half a dozen times a year ;-)
👍
The Supra looks great! I'm pretty sure your machined 3" jack spacer is safer than the 2 X 4 I used for the same purpose. That dis assembly cart looks handy and the Hurri Camry looks solid.
Thanks my friend! We've all used a handy chunk of 2x4 at some point in our lives ! Looking forward to seeing you at track day in a few weeks!
You speak of cleaning, In the late 90's early 2000s i owned and wrenched a dirt car (winged sprint), That car was washed the night after the race or next morning. When you wash then strip one down its amaizing what you may find when whiping it down ! something loose something broke something that just needs replaced. I disliked a mechanical failure more than any other DNF. But mostly thank you for your service, content and those you know effected by that storm.
You're welcome sir ! Glad you enjoyed the video, I appreciate your support. Cleanliness makes everything easier!
The Supra looks fantastic with the decals.
Thanks Jason! I appreciate the kind words!
I love that car. Watching you build it. your eye for detail is second to none. As stated before I really would like to discuss things with you about the one I'm building which is nowhere near the quality. what you have I still enjoy building and working on it. I hope to one day soon run it at Kershaw or vir. Thank you for taking us along with the build and explaining to us.helping us to understand what it is you're doing. What's the cost of where can you get one of those nitro carts that's the handiest thing I've seen. God bless you my friend and for the service to our country. 👍👍👍👍
Thank you! Email me anytime ar stockcarsurplus@gmail.com . The carst run between $400 and $600 used, new close to $1000.
You think those chassis could’ve been converted to ARCA?
Most were bent pretty bad or cut in already.
Where do you find them at
They're gone now.
Great show and as always very informative I sent you a email but I never got a response I hope you have a very good day and a very good week
👍
Back in the late 90s thru 06 we ran Craftsman Truck series and we had the exact same Dewalt drill for priming the engines! Lol Maybe I should return to racing!
👍
Enjoy watching your videos. I have yet to see a video online from anywhere explaining how the manual pull cable is installed into the bottle and how the pull pin on the bottle can be reinserted for storage.
Thanks ! I appreciate it and glad you enjoyed the video!
Thanks for sharing and educating us! Do you know if it is possible i could buy an old NASCAR or Bush car for both street and track driving? Adding the head and rear lights, windshield wipers etc to be in compliant. Is it possible?
Thanks Jeff ! Glad you enjoy the content, yes it's possible.
Another great video. Thank you for the time and effort that you put into these videos
Thank you very much! I greatly appreciate your support and I'm glad you enjoy the channel!
A real beautiful car, no detail too small to warrant your attention. You should be real proud and I have loved every minute you have opened our eyes.
Thank you very much! I'm glad you enjoy the video and I appreciate your compliment!
I sent you a email when you get a chance to read it Thank you
👍
Fantastic build. A great looking car. It's been very interesting to see what goes into building your car. Lots of information. Thank you for posting these videos. Keep up the great work.
Glad you enjoy the content, I appreciate the support!
Car looks great. Thank you for your time in making these videos. Would love to see a Hendrick build.
Thanks Dave! I appreciate it, a lot of people have messaged me wanting to see the Hendrick SS next !
Your videos are some of the most interesting and knowledgeable in the racing world keep up the great work love how indepth you get into each system
Thank you ! I'm glad you enjoy them and I appreciate your support!
Damn beautiful work, great explanations. I always enjoy the education. Thank you.
Thank you very much! I appreciate the compliment and your support!
I have a late model race car prepped to road course spec. My fire bottle is mounted below my legs and looks older, but is well in the green. Think it’s worth replacing? It’s a manual discharge bottle
Great question James ! First thing I would do is check the date of manufacture and SFI date on it, if it's older than 5 years I would definitely replace. The fire retardant chemicals inside can break down and become ineffective over time.
@@stockcarsurplusgreat input, thank you! Great video as always. Great way to start a Sunday morning with some fire bottle learning
You're welcome anytime!
Man that’s a work of art. Very inspiring and thanks for taking the time to provide the videos.
Thanks Andy ! I appreciate the compliments and your support, it's hard work for sure and I'm glad it inspires you as well!
Thank you for this episode sir! i aleays look forward to your content.
Thank you Tim ! I'm glad you enjoy the channel and I appreciate your support!
Car looks amazing. The Shelmerdine car would be my pick.
Thanks Jason! I'm partial to that car as well !
Appreciate the time you take to do this. Another great video.
Glad you enjoy it ! I appreciate the compliment and support!
We forever thank you for spending you time sharing your knowledge. Well we've seen toyotas put together. And that's cool. So I'm voting for the gen 6 Hendrick car. For whatever your going to do to that race car. Please. Question: what is the shelf life of a goodyear eagle race tire (new and one with say 2-3 laps on it) if kept in a climate controlled room before its timed out and should be thrown away? Thanks.
Thanks for the input! I've had a few ask for the Hendrick car! Age depends on care, I keep them climate controlled and out of UV light for storage and have seen no degradation on tires 5 years old. After that they begin to mold check and separate.
My opinion is to stay clear of the newer cars in my eyes they are dangerous poorly built mess's indy cars and NASCAR don't mix
👍
Long or short I'll watch 'em eather way. I still got a old un-used new Hutch-pagan naca duct I hope to use in my hot rod eventually.
👍
I just want to say thank you thank you for making another video. I have been looking and waiting for a long time for another one. the education you give us on these cars is outstanding. If you have a email address I would love to ask you some questions pertaining to the car that I am rebuilding. Again thank you so much for this video God bless and stay safe my friend👍👍👍👍
You're welcome Steve ! Glad you enjoy the channel and I appreciate your support! You can email me at stockcarsurplus@gmail.com anytime!
Kitty just wants to be a fabricator for the CATapillar team.....
🤣🤣
I've been surfing for a couple of hours and bumped into this excellent video, thank you sir for taking the time and trouble to teach us - THANK YOU !
Thanks Dave! I appreciate it and I'm glad you enjoy the channel!
I used to get confused if Buschwacking was meant to be a direct jab at Kyle Busch, never knowing that it was called the Busch Series once upon a long time before I started watching
👍
Wow,’ great video, learned a lot! Would you recommend In losing the tank for a road course/autocross build ?
I would recommend a dry sump system on every road course car.
Curious where you are obtaining your AC source from to power your sump heat probe and heat wrap.
External controller box with a digital temperature read out.
@@stockcarsurplus Thank you for responding. I did not realize that the oil tank needed that much external heating as I would have thought that the engine itself would be enough to heat the oil.
Awesome video,thank you
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it, you're welcome!
