    We have a newborn girl and I really dont want to invite her into our hurried anxious way of living. I wish we could spend time with this family. Could anyone recommend an effective way to define our household values that would help guide our decisions and prioritise what we commit to and cut out?

    This video is exactly what I needed to see. I have felt so guilty for years on not being able to keep a consistent morning routine. I need mine to unfold naturally too. I heard something once that said “stop trying to fit God into your day, and fit your day around your time with God.” It made me realize how many other things don’t “fit”.

    Any tips on decluttering books and toys? I only have one child but plan to have more and im holding on to everything because I don't know what to purge. I think books are a bit harder than toys as well because they all seem valuable and have something to teach.

    • @papertownhome
      @papertownhome 10 днів тому

      I definitely need to make a video about kids' books! They're tricky. Here's what I can share for now... I've focused on keeping books that fall into two categories: Charlotte Mason or Maria Montessori. Charlotte Mason recommends books with engaging stories, beautiful ideas, vivid imagery, and characters that inspire curiosity and nourish the heart, soul, and mind. Maria Montessori suggests content with realistic plots, natural depictions of people and animals, everyday photographs, beautiful illustrations, and informative non-fiction. These two approaches don’t completely match up, but together, they cover the range and quality of books that my children and I love. Having these categories has helped me let go of extras that don’t fit. Now, though there are lots of books that fit both Mason and Montessori styles and it's easy to end up with too many. Kim John Payne, author of Simplicity Parenting, recommends keeping only one or two books available for kids under 8, with another 10-12 on a nearby shelf. For example, you might have two on their nightstand and 10 on a shelf. I’ve started keeping four on the shelves in our play area and 10-12 in a basket in the kids' bedroom. The rest I now store in my office closet for rotation. Payne recognizes that too many books can overwhelm young kids, making it harder for them to read. Also, kids tend to want to revisit favorites over and over. That’s been true for my kids. Another idea is to keep a small collection of absolute favorites and visit the library every couple of weeks to bring in new books. Depending on the quality of your library (ours isn’t great), you might need to make a book list beforehand and submit a request. As for toys, that’s what my next video will be about. I’m digging into whether educational toys are really essential for kids' development. I won’t specifically cover what to keep if you’re expecting more kids, but I plan to do some community posts answering other questions about toys so I can address it there. The video will definitely offer some principles and a decluttering strategy that you might find helpful for your situation.

      @@papertownhome thanks so much for taking the time to answer. Good food for thoughts. I'm also trying to raise a bilingual child, so I have books in two languages, which adds to the chaos! We do have quite a few books out at once, and sometimes my daughter does want to re-read the same few books from the library which makes me think - do I buy it? Or do I just wait till it's available and borrow it again. I suppose if they can't focus on that many books maybe it's worth just waiting and reborrowing

    Hi Erika. I thought I would share a tip: when I peel and core a bunch of apples, I like to keep the "discards" and boil them into a yummy "apple tea". I let it simmer in water for 5 - 10, even 15 minutes with a pinch of salt and a cinnamon stick (optional). It gets this lovely pink color 😊 Would be probably nice with honey too. The flavor is quite mild but it's a treat I think, and nutritional for sure 😊🍎❤️ I appreciate and am touched by the love and insight that you share through your channel. Thank you 🙏❤️👋

I was very slim at one point and had a lot of clothing from that era. And then i had my prebaby weight, then the postpartum weight. My postpartum clothes are mostly second hand and hand me downs. And 2 years on ive lost some weight but not down to prebaby. I have way too many boxes of tbd clothes and clothes for when I get pregnant again. It's nuts! I really do appreciate this perspective on parenthood. I love learning about my faith as a catholic, as a therapist and artist , but those first few years in my children’s life I’m taking it very slow and staying home with them. I’m naturally sensitive and very introverted, it means a lot to us as parents that we provide a slow stress-free environment where they can just be children, locate their strengths and work on the abilities they’ll need later on (though no pressure at their very young ages). These small moments with my children where I’m attentive to their ideas and their desire for my love and attention means a lot to me because it means even more to them. I tell them how much I love and appreciate them very sincerely. It may seem over the top, but I want my children to believe their voices matter and that they have traits that make them a credit to society.

    No wonder things have spiralled in my household the past couple of years 😱 I’ve been doing school runs to two different schools, getting them out first thing, then my work etc one son has been out of school most of this year due to mental health. So this did simplify our mornings only doing one school run. However, that has started to go wrong as he won’t be rushed in the mornings (especially as his brother gets to stay at home). We managed to get temporary agreement from the school to come in late in the mornings but this was still causing chaos with me being able to start work on time. I know they’re too much rushing and that’s stressful for all of us.
