The motorcycling world is full of stories, yet most of them have never been uncovered. And here we *hopefully* come into play!
URAL - Perfect from the Very Beginning!
Ural is one of the most recognisable motorcycle companies, but their story of building side cars is far from straight forward. Arguably, they should have went bankrupt many times... Yet somehow, they live to fight another day!

I remember the Cossack I the 1970s in Australia it was 1 dollar per cc yes they were aud $650 for a 650cc Cossack and they still available in Australia but the motorcycle and side are are a little expensive and such a simple motorcycle
For some reason, I've always thought of Urals in the same way I think of Rokons. I always smile when I see them, but they're just not for me.
Surprised the Chinese haven't copied them and sell them for a third of the cost.
Spoiler Alert - they got married and lived happily ever after
The Russians are the kings at copying other designs. The concordsky and the shuttle. Looks like a fun bike though.
I stumbled across a URAL dealer on a remote rural Ohio County road. I had to stop and check it out; they looked like a nice bike. Dealer said buyers travel from surrounding cities.
Yup pawning the Nuda was almost worth it all, that bike is dope!
lol Stalin decided to take Poland WITH Germans, what do you mean "what stopped him for being next" and Germany invaded, they both did it 🐖
this is not a dakar cow
most people will never know the outright fear and JOY of being in a sidecar, i spent my years from the age of 3-7 in sidecars attached to my mothers triumph bonneville and/or one of the chapters spare bikes, i grew up the son of a president in a chapter and so sidecars were my life - i loved and hated them - man i got so cold sometimes and i still remember my joy when i got in our 1st sidecar that had a windscreen and half a roof, woohoo luxury 🙂 URAL, amazing story - quirky product by todays standards which is a shame and we should all hope they stick around - be really to see them be actually reliable though, people like me would even get one out of nostalgia and teach my kids and grandkids what's up
I enjoyed watching the video but it gives the wrong feeling that the rider passed away because the 950 Rally was to heavy and too powerful but none of those riders (Sainct, Meoni, …) loose their life on the 950! They were riding the mono cylinder 660 Rally!
As a kid growing up in the Soviet Union, the Ural defines what a motorcycle is to me. It was one of the first vehicles I saw, touched, and heard as a child, and it will forever hold a special place because of that. I had the opportunity to ride one briefly a few years ago, and it is truly a special experience and sense of occasion. It's by no means a *good* bike when compared to literally any other modern motorcycle by any objective standard, but it pushes all the right buttons for those of us who like riding motorcycles. Thank you for making this video, I've learned a lot and am now going to go look for Urals for sale haha.
I have a 2018 classic retro with a marzocchi fork and made to look like an M72. Yes, I have to do maintenance every 5000/10'000 kilometres and yes, you'll have to learn what you can and what you can't do with it. That said, I absolutely love it and I would buy another one without hesitation. I made almost 40'000 km with it now in less than 3 years. My Royal Enfield Bullet causes me more trouble in terms of repairs/breakdowns (I never had a true breakdown with my Ural btw) and my car almost never moves as I ride the Ural all year long. I have a Border Collie-ish ladie dog and she loves to ride with me in the sidecar. When I ride slow enough she can stick her nose outside and enjoy the breeze Sure, looking at pure performance stats the Ural is clearly overpriced and you'll have to keep up with the recommended maintenance schedule in order to keep it reliable. Yet, there's a lot of ill informed rumours, generalisations and often even pure lies being spread about them just because of their origin or because some people just need to talk sh*t about anything they don't understand. Those who ride them, know them. I hope I'd be able to buy a brand new Ural in 2040.
Founded by the Soviet Government now headquartered in the USA. Who would have ever seen that coming. Yes, it is a miracle they still exist. Awesome.
Bring it back at a reasonable prize ! Now that trails are back…
There is a movie called "972 breakdowns" with four Ural motorcycles going from Germany to NYC.
That story is amazing. I liked how they took the engines apart when crossing rivers... something to be said for the simplicity of them.
Hi. The Bike shown at minute 3:40 is an Harley-Davidson Model XA 😊
1930s German engineering meets modern day Russian quality control. That's how I'd describe the 2014 Ural Patrol I had. It was a unique ownership experience. On one hand, it was a total blast to ride. On the other hand, it literally spent more time broke down than running in my thee years of ownership. It required more maintenance but that was easy. It was all the quality issues that let me down. Components could be expected to fail at any moment, like the swing-arm just snapping when riding on a smooth but twisty paved road. Nearly caused me to ride off into a river, with my then-11 year old daughter in the sidecar. I could list all the failures, but there's just too much to write about. The one thing that never failed for me, that I was sort of expecting to fail, was the final drive. I wouldn't buy another one, but I'm glad I had the experience. Type three fun, for sure! Sometimes I think of what other motorcycle I could have bought and I kick myself in the butt. But I couldn't have made the memories with my kids and others who were my passengers.
You should research their sidecar motocross story, they were pretty advanced up until the collapse of the USSR. They were raced under the "Irbit" name, I test-rode one of the 1000cc bikes back in the early 80's when the Russians were competing in the European Championship.
I own a 2007 gear up. Valve separated and punctured the cylinder after 2 months of ownership 😢. It's been really fun rebuilding the engine and learning as i go, the community is great. It is hard to find parts in the us however. Not all parts, maybe i got unlucky with the engine, they did some big changes to it over the years, it's more expensive to do full rebuilds.
The whole company and CEO represent their product well. both are rugged and practically indestructible despite age.
Man, what a story you did a great job telling/relaying the information and I now have much more respect (not that I didn’t have any before) for Ural and their history. Keep up the great work and your videos are of amazing quality. I remember Urals being sold in the back of Magazines for about 5 grand back in the 90s I believe.
Good Video! I Enjoy Learning About Motorcycle History. Thank You. (Like #47 - Comment #12)
The reality of this is the west doesn’t think about these bikes. Most modern countries think rightfully so that anything Russian made is of poor quality and poor design. Decades of communism stifled any creativity that national had in most western eyes.
Really awesome video. I allways wanted a ural but.... because of the price it's not really doable.
Basically the most reknowned russia bike is a german bike copycat?
@@francescoporcari8597 like every okeyish thing that came from Russia
No reasonable company would built a boxer engine for a motorcycle. Only BMW did
100%
2:41 it's crucial to tell that ussr invaded poland to and they had Robbentrop-Molotov pact.
Like they tried 20 years earlier

Facts
Don't call stalin as a ditator, because no one have the balls to call any American president the same
What does one have to do with the other?
why do you think that an elected president is a dictator? do you know, what living under a dictatorship actually means? in the usa, you can stand in a public space and call every president a dictator, nothing will happen to you. now, try this in russia, and have fun gulag time incoming.
My friend, how old are you?
american presidents aren't dictarors - they are puppets at best
On which planet do you live ? Stalin is as much a dictator as one can ever be. Even the angry little Austrian artist got elected by the people in first place so technically he is less of a dictator than Stalin lol.
Our motorcycle!
Absolutely took me back to being a 18 year old kid watching the Dakar on World of Sports
The War in Ukraine, not a conflict.
I mean they have dual motor e bikes now that can do 50+ mph pretty much awd and some are dirt bikes some are road bikes some are inbetween
Hahhaa the dog at the end 😂
Just got mine in 2025 !!
Husqvarna dominated enduros in New England until they were sold to Cagiva. The dealers couldn't get parts and people switched to KTM. I loved my '84 WR400
"a thumping 2 stroke"? I thought thumpers were 4 strokes
格好いい。良いですね。

another great video! thx mate i had a husky te 449, good bike! insane sound and powerful AF.
I live in the uk and ride to and from work all year round. When it’s heavy wind and rain it’s not much fun or ice on the road, but I will say that when a nice dry day comes along I realise how much I have improved as a rider because of my cold/wet weather riding. It’s all about adjusting your riding accordingly to the given conditions. Yea it’s more risky and you need to decide if you should do it as it’s your life and your responsibility. Ride safe guy’s
No but i remember when ktm did..
Why was anyone expecting anything all that different? It was obvious from the very beginning of spy shots that it was a reworked 890. The OG Norden is more comfy on road and worse in the dirt than the KTM. That suits lots of people really well.
Perfect bike, 1300 km so far, really excellent 😊
have to say i had a te310 and it goes hard had to sell as its to hard to get parts for otherwise id still have it
Beautifully crafted video
Great video. Kudos
It's not the first time regulations suck, instead of 2cyl, 1000cc bikes of 130hp or even more to be the Dakar icons the 1cyl, 450cc of no more than 65hp became the ones, no more fun, trucks are more fun to watch
I 💙 your bLU cRU history!
12:31 reason for BMW to get "...out of it as quickly as possible..." had to do with current politics to the time too. More and more Motocross and Race Tracks where closed due to new strickt regulations and a missing lobby for sports-riders in Germany. And Germany was and is the best market for BMW motorrad. Fun fact: if one where brother in Hells Angels business you had big influence in politics but not much interesst in motocross. It's a well known tragedy.
