I bet that is gonna have a lot of recoil lol. Great video!
Why? 😂😂😂
loose the music \
If you would use a better quality insert so that it would break that chip in to little pieces and not have that long ribbon coming off you would get a better surface finish
if you would set that tool post the right way you would not have to keep having to take that handle off every time talk about not being efficient kind of makes me wonder about your ability
That brake is nicely blended to the barrel. Nice job! What is the difference in the oil you used threading and chambering vs the darker oil you used when drilling the brake?
Thank you! Wow, nice observation! Lighter oil is Nu-Clear and Darker is Viper's Venom. Thanks again for engaging the channel!
@@AccurateRiflesandRestorations I got to spend a couple days in the Lathe Cave with The Viper chambering 2 barrels. I am trying to get my own lathe and enjoy watching the skilled people on UA-cam and try to learn. I don't know anything about the different oils and plan to only have Viper's Venom on hand. What is the difference and reason you use different oils?
You do good work sir! Wish you were closer to KY!!! We need people like you here!
We're only a box and postage away. Let us know if you need anything!
Boy isn’t that attractive lol
Must be hard to do metric....
This one is 1 1/16 - 16. I have other videos with metric and even square threads. Not much different or more difficult, just different. Thanks for watching and for engaging the channel!
I been using copper pipe. I anneal it then squeeze a couple different pieces around different barrel diameters. Then cut the excess from the overlap if that makes sense. Also, I wrap a drywall tape before I put the copper sleeve on.
That's a great tip! I do use the drywall tape on most things, but I'll have to try your copper pipe method! Thank you for watching and engaging the channel!
I enjoy watching and learning.
Thanks for watching and for engaging the channel!
Awesome build!
I have always done 1 to 3 spring passes on my final thread depth for best results.
I hear you on that! I’ve found that’s a good way to avoid galling on the threads, too.
Outstanding rifle build and attention to detail, Love your video, keep it up.
I bet it drives tacks
Awesome. Just want to share some expirence regarding how your holding your barrel in a 4 jaw chuck. I would suggest you keep the jaws behind your chamber. Especially at the lead / freebore area. It doesn't take much force in clamping of those jaws to affect ID of the bore and from expirence chambering, will cut more than the reamer dimensions. This is why I personally use a copper ring, not only to create a pivot point, but mitigate this issue
thank you for watching and for the suggestions! FWIW - I do use brass shims between the jaws/barrel. I guess it's just the machinist trained side of me thinking choking up on the barrel is best for rigidity, but you do have very valid points! Others have mentioned similar things. While I don't torque down super tight, ID deformation is a definite possibility and I'll take that into consideration moving forward! Always open to constructive suggestions/criticism. Thank you again!! (BTW - I love your channel!! Subscribed!)
Can you also reset headspace with another recoil lug. I mean what is 0.253 for anyway?
hmmmm.... that's a good suggestion. Perhaps that's what the odd size is, never thought of that!
How long does the process take start to finish?
depends on the cartridge. Bigger/longer cartridges take more time due to more material being removed. It takes as long as it takes. No rush. Thanks for watching and for engaging the channel!
I have a really old 94 but I've resisted the temptation to look very hard at the bore, probably not good.
don't do it! otherwise you'll be sending it to us to get a liner installed! 😁
Due to normally great accuracy, I don't mind the looks of the Savage barrel nut at all, as it is the look of accuracy. It also allows for easy barrel swaps at home with minimal tools.
Fascinating, how long does this process take for a barrel from one of the big manufacturers for an off the shelf rifle? Also, is that special oil in the bottle? Or just motor oil or something?
depends on the cartridge. Bigger/longer cartridges take more time due to more material being removed. It takes as long as it takes. No rush. The oil is Nu-clear mixed with a bit of Vipers Venom. Thanks for watching and for engaging the channel!
Licence free music still comes at a price 🫠 nice job(s) anyway! Is that an Elk hound btw?

used the 6X284 in the 1990's guess we me missed it by .5mm however the yotes did not know.
it is a great underappreciated cartridge for sure!
Hunting rifle, Carbon wrapped or fluted steel barrel?
Carbon Fiber barrels can have some consistency issues. They look snazzy and are nice and light weight, but I would personally go with traditional steel.
@@AccurateRiflesandRestorations Thanks for the quick reply. I think you are correct. Love to watch your builds !
R U going to shot it for accuracy? I hope so.
Me too
Video was shot and rifle was delivered way back in February. Since then, it has been winning matches and shoots very well from what I heard from the customer and a few others. New videos will have more accuracy proving in the future, I promise!
@@AccurateRiflesandRestorations Thank you I love to watch people testing accurate rifle.
Looks good. Few things I noticed. Generally you want to take more than that off the muzzle end. Usually want take about 3/4 of an inch. That's why barrels come at least an inch longer than barrel finished length. The reason being is that where the lap exits the bore is distorted. Especially in hand lapped barrels where it's impossible to keep the lapping rod perfectly straight. Don't have to do it on the chamber side because you're cutting that part out when you drill/ream(although if you're getting your concentricity from the lands you need the indicator probe past this point). Most of the time you can actually watch a tenths indicator climb onto the lands and they will be shorter/uneven in the first part of each end. Also if that's a sized round from the customer then that head space is a bit tight. The bolt should fall free on a sized case(since you're generally bumping the shoulder back 0.001"-0,002). If that's a freshly fired case then it's probably fine but he should make sure he's sizing it back enough for the bolt to fall freely. The case should have room to grow into the chamber when fired. Especially the first time in a new chamber. Cheers.
@@MMBRM Try taking .750" off a Carbon Six or Proof barrel and then thread to 5/8-24 thread. Today's lapping by all "best" barrel makers does not require that dimensional take off unless you're trying to achieve a reduced barrel length.
@@johnseptien3138 Neither one of the scenarios you presented are taking place in this video. 0.750" just gives you some margin of safety. You can normally get away with 0.5". All the carbon barrels I've seen come with 2" or so of steel at the muzzle when you buy a blank. Which is plenty to cut off 0.5" and thread. You're wrong about most good barrels not requiring or recommending that you cut off that much from the muzzle. There's a reason that every steel barrel ships at least an inch longer than finished length when you order blanks. You think they wouldn't save every inch of steel they could to cut costs if it didn't matter?
Thank you very much for watching and for engaging the channel! Bartlein does say there is no need to cut off any additional length from the muzzle end of their barrels anymore. They've been manufacturing their barrels long, cutting off the buggered section, and shipping the final length. Still good to cut a fresh crown in any case. Others are following suit, but it is always wise to call and ask, as well as borescoping. I do explain that I borescoped this barrel (but did not get footage of it) and that the bore looked good, but I was cutting off the 1/4" or so just to be on the "safe" side. The rifle shoots "lights out" and has won some matches this season, so there's definitely no issue with this particular barrel. Very good advice none-the-less!
@@AccurateRiflesandRestorations Thanks for the reply. I have heard anecdotally that some manufacturers cut off the distorted section but haven't seen it myself. Do you know when Bartlein started doing this? I ask because the last three F-CLASS barrels I did were Bartlein and they all came in over a inch longer than their finished size. Including one I did less than a month ago(Although I don't know when they actually were made). I think I still have the cut off portions of them hanging around so I'll chuck them in the lathe to see if they still have the distortion in them. Often times you can't see it with a bore scope as the wear can be very minimal(lands can be up to 0.0005" shorter or less sometimes). You can always check this by using a tenths indicator probe inside the bore near the entrance to the muzzle measure the land and groove to get the height of each land and then compare to a spot further in(easier if it's dialed in concentric). Glad to hear that the barrel is a shooter! That's always very satisfying. My three bartleins just came first, second and third in a mid sized FTR championship. One shot 7 out of 10 matches clean while averaging over 50% X count. The conditions made for easy shooting but it still makes me proud! Mild conditions make the accuracy more important. I wish your videos had been around when I started out. They would have been a big help. I'm sure they can still teach me a thing or two. Take it easy.
Snowing? Where are you?
This was filmed in Feb in Wyoming.
Keep in mind I've sat in a 4th of July parade in Afton in spitting snow and rain. Welcome to Wyoming!
03:46 Filmed Feb 14 2024
How’s this compared to using a prefit barrel in say a zermatt action as far as accuracy and cost? Thx
Thank you for watching and for the comments! For a basic barrel (SAAMI chamber, standard length, contour, no muzzle threads, plain barrel) with no other options it is slightly cheaper. These prefits are machined with looser tolerances in order for them to fit any/all actions, so depends on if you care about that, or want someone like me to properly fit the barrel to your specific action and be hands-on the entire time - rather than some CNC robot mass producing barrels for the masses. In theory, accuracy could suffer with a prefit due to this, but I have heard lots of people are happy with their robot-made prefit barrels. Also be aware that you need to invest in expensive gauges, vises, and wrenches to properly torque these barrels so they don't come loose and headspace is correct.
Nice work
Thanks for the visit
Man this is badass I really am blown away on the thread protector! Never have I seen one that slick. 👍 10/10 brother
Thanks 👍I appreciate you watching and for the nice comment!
Music no good BUT excellent work and craftsmanship my friend
Sorry about that music (everyone), I was a bit biased because it was a friends' band. Won't use it again!
there you go, bend that barrel into position, alright, alright, alright🤦🏻♂️. lots to learn, i see. what happens when you loosen everything up and the barrel goes back to its "relaxed" state? even though gordy gritters teaches that method, you're not getting what you think you are. he doesn't realize it either. im not trying to put you down or anything, and i realize your rifles shoot good. im not saying they won't. I just hope to make you think about what is really going on there so you can improve. after you are all done chambering that barrel you can check the alignment of everything, and i don't mean, just put your indicator in the chamber and check run-out.
what's the correct approach to reduce deformation while workholding?
@HiRayWilliamJohnson I don't think reducing is an option. from what I've tried and seen, your two options are to live with it or eliminate it. The only way to eliminate it is to use the true bore alignment system or the B.B.A.R. collet chuck.
Can we get a follow up? Im interested in hearing how the customer likes that action and what kind of groups it's printing. Thanks!
That customer is quite happy with it, and has successfully harvested some Antelope this year. I'm actually working on a new build video (307/Shilen/HS Precision/Leupold/Hornady) that will feature some grouping tests on paper! stay tuned!
@@AccurateRiflesandRestorations Awesome! I'm looking forward to it.

Geoff, i would like to get a copy of the build sheets your using. Where can i aquire one?
Hey John! I just developed them over the years to suit my needs. Simple stuff. Brownells has a good starting point in their documents section...

Hope that's not a drill chuck holding a cutter if it is its going to let go at some stage . get a ER collet system ER 32 is a good size . Also handy for holding small screws etc and turning the heads down whether in the mill or on the lathe
oh man, I was waiting for this one!! It's admittedly "lazy" but we're just cutting wood here. If we were machining important metal of some sort we would definitely use a proper collet. Thank you for your concern, but we have never had an issue doing it this way for years. Thanks also for watching and for engaging the channel!!
I had a Savage built without the barrel nut. It was chambered in 25-06 with a 9 twist. Most accurate rifle I have. Load r&d was vg. No load exceeded. 630 in group size with 5 shots. Going to build a 6 rem AI NEXT. SAME WAY. New sub.
Let us know if we can help you out with that next one! Thanks for watching and for engaging the channel!!
With so little out on these actions could you clarify if they are capable of accepting prefit barrels?
23:00 - it takes a "standard" 1 1/16 -16 (Remington 700) threaded barrel, if you really want a yucky prefit... 🙃
$2000 for the action? I’d rather have a Borden at that point and save $500-$700 and have an action that is perfect!
agreed! ...Defiance are pretty over priced IMHO. Nice actions, but still, a lot of similar/better options for less $$$$
I thought I recognized that voice! I'm looking forward to seeing this channel grow.
Appreciate the support, brother!!
I would say the blind hole on the handle end of the bolt is likely there for the addition of an aftermarket three position safety shroud similar to the Winchester model 70
Ah yes, that is probably exactly it! Forgot they offer a 3-pos safety. Thanks for watching mate! Cheers!
Nice rifle!!! I have that exact action in single shot on order. Im having it chamberd in 6.5 PRC 30" Brux 1.250 straight barrel in a Cyrus stock.
It is a pure shame the weak 6.5 NeedMoor kicked out the up and coming 6.5-284 Norma which is far superior to the 6.5 NeedMoor . Around 9 years ago I started to add to the AR 10 uppers I build and sell the 6.5-284 Norma which has become one of the better preferred ordered AR 10 uppers I build and sell. One of my own AR 10s I hunt with is in 6.5- 284 Norma so I have allot of hunting experiences with this cartridge. The difference between a bolt rifle for the 6.5-284 Norma and the AR 10 is the AR 10 for 6.5-284 Norma is bullets need to be seated in the case, so the cartridge fit into the AR 10 magazine which shows no change in accuracy and also don't let inexperienced gun owners repeat the garbage when using heavy bullet the powder charge has to be reduces not so because using correct load data for loading 6.5mm 156 grain bullets show powder to the case Shoulder and can't take any more or that is an over pressure load going to flatten primers and cause case sticking in the chamber. Using all load data for the 6.5mm bullets of any weight and follow the recommended powder charge to bullets weigh won't case any issues should bullets be seated slightly deep in the case. For hunting I am a Barns copper bullet all the way but in 6.5 mm there is no heavy bullets in copper expanding bullets I am using the Norma Oryx and Vulcan bullets in 156 grain and by using these weights of bullets my 6.5-284 Norma loads can match the 270 Winchesters 150 and 160 grain loads. I feel to be on the safe side of shooting deer to Elk is 300 yards max range I would take a shot and if shooting might be further then I own 2 rifles in 300 Wby mag and a 338 win mag and a Rare Brevex Mauser in 8mm-378 Wby mag so I am using the right tool for the job at hand. I will add that I am using for all of the AR 10 and AR 15 builds is Pac Nor super match barrels.
Maybe you should start your own UA-cam channel
@@pitts3219 I bought the video cameras then I haven't a clue how to make the videos. With the sales of the AR 10 and AR 15 uppers now gaining sooner or later I need to get this done on videos of what I build in video's. I am sure many gun nuts would like to see the AR 15 upper I build in 7.92x33 Kurz or 17 Remington fired and the AR 10 uppers I build and sell in all of the WSM magnums - 6.8 Western - 6.5 PRC /- 6mm-284 win /- 6.5 -284 Norma /--- 250 Savage and 358 WSM and a 375-300 WSM . One of my own AR 10 uppers I hunt with is in 375-300 WSM and to show gun nuts this AR shooting would really get peoples brain gears turning what they could do with an AR in 375-300 WSM. I just got the new Pac Nor super match barrels 2 days ago to do another AR 15 upper in 7.92x33 Kurz - one 6 mm barrel to do an AR 10 upper in 6mm-284 win - one 25 cal barrel to do another AR 10 upper in 250 Savage and a 30 cal barrel to do another AR 10 upper in 300 WSM all will be for sale soon. In 25 cal and 30 cal I ordered the Polygonal rifling to try something different. Another of my own AR 10 is in 6mm-284 win and that is really amazing shooter out doing even the 240 Weatherby mag. The AR 10 cycles the 6mm-284 win like the AR 10 was designed for the 6mm-284 win. Once the adjustable gas block is adjusted for proper operating pressure the AR 10 cycles the cartridges like a champ ! packs of running coyotes don't stand a chance in hell against this auto loading 6mm-284 because 70 grain 6mm bullets are leaving the barrel at 4200 FPS.
@@pitts3219 If someone is in the Pacific NW and has a new business or starting a business related to outdoors or hunting and that person has skills to make videos, I will make a deal with them if they make my videos then when I go to trade shows to sell my AR rifle uppers this person can use part of my booth to promote their business. I need videos or my AR uppers being used in hunting trips as a promotion video's. These booths can cost $300 to $700 or much more like the Alaskan great outdoor show I attend is now $1200 so this could be a good trade
I’m sorry but you shouldn’t ever make a video
Just a tip. Flip your threading tool over. Run in reverse and thread away from the head stock. It will relieve a ton of stress and you can choose exactly where you want the thread next to the shoulder. Invest in some thread files they help a ton with fine tuning.
that's a good tip! I do do this when internal threading actions. Will give it a try someday. Thanks for watching and for the comment, mate!
