    For many kids my age, Diver Down was the first Van Halen album we were aware of. I didn't get to see them live during their original run with Roth, and it wasn't until I got to see Ed play this song on TV a few years later (probably Live Without A Net) that I even realized this was a guitar. It sounded like a synth! My mind was yet again blown.
    It's amazing what Ed could do - not only was he innovative on guitar, he wrote great songs.
    Thanks for going into this, I look forward to the deep dive for the whole Diver Down album (and all their records).

      Thank you, Apple O! I really do appreciate it! - I was 13 when I saw them headlining the '79 world tour. It was pretty amazing - life changer for me. I was already playing guitar (9 years old), and a buddy of mine played the first album for me on Thanksgiving Day, 1978. I went on to see them in '81 - Fair Warning - (twice on that tour), then Diver Down, and then 1984...I wouldn't see them again until F.U.C.K and the Balance tours...I was busy playing on the road with my own band '87-'91, so I missed a couple of tours in there....
      Don't know that I'm going to do all the records, but I'm working on 1984 and Diver Down right now. They're both similar, and very different at the same time. Diver Down was recorded at Amigo Studios (Warner Brother's), except for Pretty Woman (Sunset Sound) and of course 1984 was recorded at 5150. So, this is going to be a fair amount of work....gimme time. It's coming, but there's a fair amount of head scratching going on here in my studio 😉

      @@jegauss Wow, you are a lucky guy to have seen them during the "Van Halen II" and "Fair Warning" tours!
      No worries, we are patient here. I know it isn't a Roth record, but I think on 5150, Ed was still at his peak. If you could eventually cover that album, it would be cool. But of course Diver Down and 1984 have priority!
      Thanks again for doing this. Haha, head scratching, eh? When you are stumped, what do you do, start looking at live videos, listening to live shows, scouring interviews, or calling experts? (it would be interesting to see that list!) I'm sure it's fun, because I myself enjoy figuring out Van Halen songs on the guitar.

      @@AppleOno Ha! Yeah, I get stumped...that's when I start the trial and error process, and start recording 100s of tracks of tests - pickups, tubes, amp bias, amp configurations, effect configurations, guitars, mic placements and other variables in the recording process. It's a lot! With Sunset Sound, we have a pretty good idea about the gear, the rooms, the mics, etc...Amigo and 5150 studios???? not a clue. Plus, they had a relatively long time to record 1984, so I think there was a lot of experimentation going on with everything involved with that album. Anyway, hopefully, I'll get it figured out...😉

    • @jegauss
      @jegauss  2 роки тому +2

      Thanks Don! The delay that you hear is part of the wet / dry / wet rig that I'm playing through. The two outside Marshall 4x12 speaker cabinets are the "wet" cabinets. Their delayed / echo signal is coming from a pair of Roland SDE 3000 digital delays. So, on this rig, to answer your question, the delay is running after the amp. I use a Palmer PDI-03 to split the signal so I can run the un-effected signal and the wet signals side by side.

I think, but I don't know for sure, the chorusing effect that you hear is just the eventide harmonziers doing their "fat detune thing" in the studio - But, I don't know for sure...it's entirely possible that he did use an actual chorus pedal. He did for Pretty Woman, and it's the same album...I know live, he just used the Lexicon PCM 70 - it handled the detune and the delay - I don't know that for sure, but I'm reasonably sure. Kids these days just don't know how many records we wore out playing the same spot over and over trying to figure out what is being played so we can learn it all by ear. UA-cam has done wonders for people wanting to learn the songs that took us hours and days to figure out.

      Amen, John! Yeah, we didn't even really have cassettes yet! I mean, they were around, but mostly, we had records...you had to learn to sing the part to yourself, and find the notes on your guitar (so much better for ear training) - we also didn't have tablature...honestly, not having youtube, tabs, etc...makes you a better player. It trains your ear better, and that's what being a musician is all about, really. It's not about learning the technical details of sweep picking! 😉. Hi Jim thank you so much for your inspirational lessons and playing. A couple questions if you don't mind. I noticed you prefer the " original" 1959 style heads,would any year of this kind work? (70's, 80's). As for mods you mentioned replcaing the cap in position V2, any other marshall head mods you recommend? The variac set at 87 volts and or 71 volts! I thought the head would disintegrate lol. How do you reduce the volume so your ears aren't fried? I see where you actually pulled tubes. You ever use an attenuator ? Thank you for your help. I appreciate what you're are doing very much.

    • @jegauss
      @jegauss  2 роки тому +1

      Hey Thomas! Yes, I much prefer the 1959 style "4-hole" Marshall circuit. I'm not a big fan of master volume amps of any kind. Obviously, there are certain situations where you can't avoid them, but for most of my life, I've "avoided" those situations 😉. You can run the variac down as low as you want, until the tube heaters quit working. And, you'll know when that is - the amp behaves as though you've shut off the power, the sound just slowly fades out. I actually often run my variac down to 66-67 volts. In fact in the Brown Sound Quest - Fair Warning video, I had it running a 67 volts. The amp is still pretty loud, but it fits in nicely, on a stage, with a live drummer. So, I've gotten away with it for years...I'm sure that's what Ed did, too. I think the "90 volt" thing was sort of the "go-to" setting when they talked about it. But, I would guess that it was much, much lower than that. 90 volts doesn't get you much in volume reduction. And, the whole reason Ed used the variac was to reduce the volume of the amp...the added benefit of that was the extra "squish" you get out of a voltage starved amp.
      As far as what years work for that type of head? I tend to prefer '68 - '70. They were a little warmer, and a little less "gainy." But honestly, if you get one of the reissue amps that you see floating around on ebay and reverb, etc...those are based off of the '68-ish build. I own a couple of them and they sound great. Good luck!

  • @willdenham
    @willdenham Рік тому

    Nice bird! Hey Jim, I saw your appearance on Johnny Beane and I was a little confused with something you had said about amp volume. You had your SLP dimed on WCF and Fair Warning, but on Johnny Beane's stream you say to never dime the amp because it will flub out. I know they do have a lot of gain, and I agree that sometimes it's too much, were those album settings just a rare departure?

    • @jegauss
      @jegauss  Рік тому

      I'd have to go back an listen to what I was saying on Johnny Beane's show...but, what I think I might have been saying, may have been about Volume 2 (you can't dime that one without the amp choking) - or it may have been before I discovered that it's ok to use even lower variac settings than I had been using on the first 2 VH videos...it is a tricky thing, you can easily get into the "too much gain / flub / choke" sound if you've got the amp dimed...so, for me, it was the difference in finally getting the right pickup for VH1 and VHII and the right variac settings, and bias settings. But, I've since figured it all out and I can dime the amp for the first 2 albums, too....so again, I'd have to watch it back and see what I was trying to say...but that's my story and I'm sticking to it 😉

    • @willdenham
      @willdenham Рік тому

      @@jegauss Yes I have noticed with my SLP 50wt that is way more gain than I need. I am rarely at 10 on the Vpot. I don't think I told you that I had a JTM50 67' spec made locally by a great amp tech and that does not have the SLP kind of gain, it's a real clean amp that when cranked with my 78' Custom/SD's puts you in Halen land. Also he put a bright cap on it and a shared to split cathode switch which, when engaged gives up more dirt that is tighter and more focused.
      Of course I'm not using a variac yet, so it's probably nothing close to what you would sign off on. That said these are great tones that I would have never tried had it not been for your vids. PS, I do plan on getting that variac.

Maybe it was a cable or a dirty component here or there. Also, is that white Marshall behind you one of the JCM 900's?

      @@BaldPerspective I kinda think you missed where I was coming from....you should probably check out my channel and take a look at the Brown Sound Quest series of videos - I assure you, I have more than just a "base knowledge of recording techniques - here's the link for one of them ua-cam.com/video/dsoUDOJFieI/v-deo.html This "in the room" sound was done completely intentionally, noise and all. Marshall Super Leads on 10 hiss - even when they're variac'd down to 68 volts. Also, iphones have built in comp/limiters on the microphone, and tend to "enhance" hum and hiss. Anyway, if you have the time, go check out the series of videos on the VH Brown Sound Quest - you might get a kick out of them. Very accurate, and I've paid attention to some of the most minute details.
      The white Marshall is a 1959 Super Lead, 35th year anniversary
      Thank you for watching!

      @@jegauss Will def check out your other vids. Sorry to presume you were a novice. Completely forgot most people would have that thing cranked & that's why it'd be noisy lol

      @@BaldPerspective No worries whatsoever...I just wanted to point you in the right direction. I normally wouldn't do a poor sound quality video like this, but I've had so many requests, based on those deep dive, Brown Sound Quest videos, asking, "how does it sound in the room, without any fancy mics, studio stuff, etc.....?"
