My mother came to Memphis and was destitute with a 7-8 yr old boy that placed him with Georgia Tann in 42. She married my father in 45 and my brother was born in 46 , I was born in 48. My family split up around 49-50 and I remember being at Juvenile court when I was around 2yrs old. my mother would never give us up but she couldn't take care of us. My brother and I were in foster homes and orphanages in Memphis until I was 18 yrs old.. I learned about my half brothers and half sister when I was in my late 30's. Georgia Tann's actions tramatized my brother and my life even after she died and I am still mad about my stolen childhood. I'm adjusted and turned out to be a successful family man and have a stable non eventful prosperous life. God took care of me and I'm very grateful to some wonderful loving people who become parents to me when I was in college. I read the book before We were yours and was very touched by it. I think Georgia Tann was a MONSTER and she caused a lot of suffering. I think GOD has a special place in HELL for Georgia Tann and her minions.

In the sequel, 'Dear Hanna'. Stage writes in the concluding acknowledgements 'I was influenced and informed by the book 'The Sociopath Next Door' by Dr. Martha Stout'. '... While the rest of us live to feel good, people without a conscience live by different rules, often ones they make up by themselves ... Hannah constructs a life for herself according to the logic of her misaligned moral compass'. That is the spine of the book. Readers can consider whether the light was worth the candle.

My great, great grandfather's family (Edmund Hosmer, born 1798) lived next door to The Alcotts, and even rented a house (Dove Cote) to them in 1840, which was paid for by Emerson--since the Alcotts were deep in debt. So the girls played and put on plays with my great-grandfather and his sisters and brothers in Concord, which is my middle name. My great-grandfather, born in Concord in 1827, left for Detroit in the late 1850's, married an Englishwoman, had a child, and after his wife died, moved to Missouri, where he settled near Springfield, married again, whose wife gave birth to my own grandfather there. As a child, he knew the Alcotts, Emerson, Thoreau, Hawthorne, Margaret Fuller, et al. living in Concord when he grew up in the 1830-1850's. The Cheever book mentions them playing with the Alcott girls.

Horrible unbearable hatable characters, lots and lots of plot armor such as ridiculous details like “no one even has a single hammer”. Really?? An artist who supposedly works in glass only has 3d printers? Total missed opportunities of epic glass blowing mixed with the lava from the volcano. Slight offsite facilities maintenance building for the “arming up montage” these characters deserved. The forest ranger character’s audiobook performance was especially dull. Kate’s character was perfectly cast - her voice was so insipid. Who would write in such a fashion in a journal? Entire novel is heresay stacked on heresay.

"Make Room, Make Room" by Harry Harrison would be a good comparison with "1984" of how scarcity of resources is depicted in each novel. I've written a paper on the depiction of scarcity as depicted in George Orwell's "1984" and Harry Harrison's "Make Room, Make Room". I checked with ChatGPT on the top and this was the conclusion: "While both novels depict scarcity and its consequences, the underlying causes and societal contexts differ. In "1984," scarcity is a deliberate tactic employed by a totalitarian regime to maintain control, while in "Make Room! Make Room!," scarcity arises from overpopulation and the strain it puts on limited resources."

You get a thumbs down for strawmanning and trying to present the false idea that if people care about something like hiding book titles on a book shelf, that they cant also care about Gaza or other serious news stories. Maybe you personally aren't capable of that, but that is something you should perhaps work on (it is nice to balance heavy news stories with lighter ones). I know this is an old video that the youtube algorithm has presented to me, but it is definitely having the opposite effect than making me want to watch videos from you (and I know there's a good chance you don't care about my comment which is fine and I'm happy for you, I have no issues with leaving a conversation at let's agree to disagree). I like having my books spine out because it means my house guests can easily pick a book that interests them from the shelf. Also I'm just not that into decorating with beige, so for me spine-in looks less attractive than the various covers. Tracking which books you have read versus not read does seem to be one of the few reasons that makes sense to me for this trend. But I don't have to live in your house or even visit it, so if this makes you happy then while like many people I think spine-in looks silly, I also think it's pretty harmless, so don't feel pressured to change your style just because of a youtube comment.

I'm sorry but I think you missed the point of this book. It reminds me a lot of state of fear by Michael Crichton. That book is about global warming. However, there's a line in that book that sums up what this book is about. I'm paraphrasing... But the line from the book reads something like: Civilization does not separate us from nature, it protects us from nature.

I enjoyed this video and the way these historical figures are presented as real people who made regrettable mistakes, had feelings, and left a legacy. I have been reading The Life and Letters of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelly volumes 1 & 2, by Florence A. Thomas Marshall. It has been very enlightening for me , partly because of the era in which it was written. I’ve enjoyed reading excerpts from Mary’s actual letters and seeing how she changed and matured over the years. It is sad that Percy, Mary and Jane/Claire made so many errors in judgment at such young ages. Their social rebellions haunted them for the rest of their lives.

Another name people need to read to understand the flawed nature of socialism is Ayn Rand. She was an incredible novelist from the 20th century and a refugee of Communist Russia so she experienced these ideas first hand after Dostoevsky had prophesized them. Jordan Petersen for some reason is a critic of hers and I think he’d gain a lot by reading her novels and studying her philosophy of Objectivism.
