Sea Cowboy Episode 1- Finding the boat - 2002 Island Packet 420 -
Переглядів 4,1 тис.4 роки тому
In this episode we preview a 2002 Island Packet 420. An amazing boat and the first of many that we look at before making our purchase. Enjoy! Our intentions are to be full time live aboards and this is an ideal floorplan, size, etc. This is a boat anyone could sail around the world on.
I look at this and agree it is a great boat, one I would very much consider. Bruckmann makes a larger MS, and Nordhavn makes one as well. Cabo Rico had one and Tayana, this looks and feels more like a sail boat, which I prefer. I see they list two drafts available. The shallow is 3' 8". Nothing is listed for the deeper draft. Would you have access to that information? Both boats I mentioned are in different price brackets than the IP.
It's a pity it looks so dated. Give me a Euro look bluewater boat in blue or white (not that off-white ivory - yuk!) which doesn't slam, and you'd have a winner.
I agree very much.
Yeah, I agree with you on the swim platform. The fat butt on the Benes and the Jeanneaus is a nice feature, but the quality of the Catalina overall seems a little higher. Which boat did you go with? Cheers.
We got a Beneteau 411. The more I look, years worth of looking, the more I can’t make up my mind between the Island Packet and the Catalina. One day when I get to upgrade, if money isn’t an issue, it would most likely be the newer Island Packets
Great Craftmanship , that gel coater is amazing ,great video
Let me first say this I have no experience judging damage to a boat. With that being said I have yet to see and holes in the hull that are not supposed to be there. Looks like a little cracking in the gelcoat around where your davits attach and that might indicate some fiberglass damage but that is repairable. The single biggest win for you so far is that there doesn't appear to be any leaks or water damage. Keep moving forward and she will be back in the water before you know it. Yes there are going to be some costly replacements in your future, but that will still be cheaper than buying a whole other boat. Fair winds and following seas to you, and may it get cooler soon as well.
Thanks. I think with some time, effort, and $$$ the boat can be saved and sailed anywhere. We are enjoying the process and will have it completed in the next six months I hope.
Keep it up ... a little at a time gets the job done. The boom and the boom vang look good, so that's a win!!! As you clear away all of the debris on deck it will become less chaotic to look at, and you will begin to impose some order .... the progress will follow!!! Clearing out all of the upholstered items down below will help get rid of the mildew small that you mentioned last episode -- give it all a good airing out while you clean and disinfect the interior.
Thanks! Will do! Hoping to head out tomorrow to make more progress
RIghty tighty lefty loosey. Paul, you have quite the bedroom voice. You were born with the pipes to tell stories people want to listen to. I think I'll be listening regularly when I need to chill out because your voice puts me at ease. Keep up the great work!
So cool. Thanks.
You could buy a rechargeable battery fan ( or two) at Home Depot or Lowe’s. Could be a life saver. Sandra has the right idea… 1/2 hr work then cool down and hydrate. Best wishes, be strong.
100% Thanks for the well wishes.
This is So inspiring. Thank You for filming these videos of the repairs.
Thank you very much. Glad you like them!
Yeah it’s a mess but y’all got this !!!
Thanks Joanne!
My gulfstar was also badly damaged in ian. I was located near your boat for months while I worked. Buy a cheap ac unit at home depot and install in companion way. Will make it more comfortable and remove alot of moisture. Can always sell it to another boater later
Thanks. How is your boat now?
Just a thought! If it were me, I'd be stripping all the fittings from your broken mast and then go looking for a replacement. I'm sure there must have been boats totalled that didn't have mast damage? Ideally from the same boat however a larger mast could easily be cut down to size. The reuse all your fittings. Good luck!!
You read my mind.
Great stuff, one step at a time and getting stuck into the inside will show quick tangible results and lift the spirits. Safety always comes first, so it's good to see you removal stuff from the deck.
I really would salvage the mainsail as best as possible, both parts. Because its clean cut in half it possibly just a new a new peace in between... Really to bad to see it as a write off... Bring it to a sailmaker and get an estimate I'd say.. same for your genua. Even a mast can sometimes repaired with reinforcing plates. Good luck, i will follow your progress!! ❤😊
Great to see your enthusiasm guy's i wish you all the luck possible to get your dreams back
Thanks so much!
How did you go about finding and purchasing a Hurricane damaged boat?
I owned it before the hurricane. The eye of Hurricane Ian sat on top of my boat for about an hour. Now I have the pleasure of bringing it back to life.
@@TheSeacowboy I would love to talk more with you offline about the repair process. My wife and I are looking at storm damaged boat and any insight you can offer would be greatly appreciated.
@@daniellibby3849 Sounds great. I am happy to share. My first and most basic insight is boats that pass a survey, even brand new boats can have issues that require time and treasure. If I didn't owe money on this boat, I may not endeavor to complete this project. I know every boat is different, but just keep in mind, boats in "great shape" may still need attention. Reach out any time.
Nice boat. I like the floor plan.👍
Thanks 👍
"....I will pimp myself..."😂.. keep your heads up, every little bit gets you closer.
Lol
take it easy one step at the time one day you will see and sail again with your loveones
Thanks! My wife and I are heading out today to get more work done. The elephant will be eaten.
Flake sail starting at the foot pulling head of sail towards you 2 feet at a time, repeat. As far as keel bolts go they look good, remove one at a time and retighten. Have patience, you have a great attitude!
Thanks! Do you think I can save this sail from what you see or was cutting it off the furler the end of it?
@@TheSeacowboy yes, just take it to a sailmaker
One step at a time. Get a dehumidifier running in your boat if you have shore power. You're doing fine. You'll learn what you need to, when you need to. Keep working on it, and keep posting Very interesting
Thanks very much!
I know you are feeling down but that really does not look that bad. You've done all you need to inside so now get all the rigging and stainless off and everything will look way better. Do the math on all the bits you will need to buy. Then it will simply be can you afford/justify that expense or is it time to sell the hull on to someone who can. At least with the wreckage cleared she will look worth saving.
Thanks Steve. I am optimistic. I live 2 hours away so I can't get down like I would like to and so it's a lot to take in. That said, I'm pumped about the project and getting her back in the water.
Take down all of it off the deck. Leave it next to the boat and walk through what's good, what's not. A fab shop can cut out bends in the tubing. The mast can be cut and spliced, you need a new main anyways so once the mast is spliced together, install an external track and Masthead up in Tampa has sails to fit. I saw her in March when I put my boat up for summer there. Mildew, wipe with distilled cleaning vinegar. Dollar tree down the street has Totally Awesome cleaner for a buck. Use that too. There's a bolt cutter inside the left side of the white covered canopy by the office. You walked past it when you went to the lounge. I left it there. That's where I'd start. See you in October down there. If you don't want that dink.... Leave it under SV One Drop, I'll take it. 😊it's by that canvased pole building the bolt cutters are in by the office.
Dude ... I think that you made out pretty well ... the hull looks like it didn't suffer any major damage and the keel looks good! Yea the stainless damage sucks, but most stainless is put together section by section - take it apart and see if the bent pieces can be fabricated at a local shop, to be bolted back into place to repair each section piece by piece. As for the mast that's done, strip the Radar mount and anything else that you can reuse, remove the sail from inside, and then get whatever scrap value that you can for the aluminum. As for uses for the sail material, maybe you can find someone with a much smaller boat -- you have the head, luff, and leech for what looks to be close to 2/3 of the sail, so you may be able to use the sewing machine to sew in a new foot. The fact that the unit is for an in-mast furling system complicates things a bit (vertical battens), but you might be able to salvage it for someone desperate for a new sail. As for the mold and bugs -- you are already doing what you can bleach and bug bombs (and a bunch of elbow grease)!!! You never mentioned insurance ... being that it was on the hard and as far out of harms way as you could get from being in the water during the hurricane, are they not covering the claim?
I'm making a video on the insurance because it's the first thing everyone asks about. I was insured with Geico up through July of last year. They stopped insuring boats like mine and the boat wasn't ready to pass survey for a new insurance carrier. That is the long and short of it. So.... time to be resourceful.
@@TheSeacowboy Wow ... I'm really sorry to hear that. I think that it sucks the way they treat older boat owners. They'll insure a model's ass without blinking an eye, but the average Joe just wants to keep their boat covered and has to jump through ridiculous hoops. Well I wish you the best with the project ... I'll keep watching!
Insurance should fix it surely 🤔
I will be putting up a video about this in the coming weeks.
Saddle up cowboy. 1. Stop further damage. 2. Save what can be salvaged. 3. Get organized, projects, priorities, and estimates. 4. Stop feeling sorry for yourself and get to work.
Right on. The work has begun and it feels great.
How do you eat an elephant???? one bite at a time. Just make progress everyday. Use vinegar and water for the mold.
Thanks I saw something on another UA-cam video telling me I was poisoning myself with that bleach and mold mixture.
One brick at a time , first i would make sure the topsides are water tight and clean up the topsides make it look like work is being done and it will help keep thieves at bay
I fully agree.
A new in mast furling mast will cost $20,000-$25,000.Just for the mast. An alternative would be to use the existing mast. Cut it clean on both damaged ends, remove the inmost furling bits the best you can, then splice the two pieces together using an internal sleeve. Then get a Tides Track system to install in the track grove. The entire system should run about 2k. Then you will need a full batten sail, which you can probably find used for a few grand. New standing rigging you can do yourself with stay lock fittings. My guess is you can do the entire project for under 7k. Faced the same situation when hurricane Irma clobbered the BVI in 2017. I was luckily I was able to salvage a Hood stowaway mast off my friend's vessel which sunk but did no damage to the rig. My Forespar in mast furling mast broke just like yours. Major job but the results were great and the cost was under 2k. Good Luck.
Wow. That is amazing info. Thanks. I wanted to switch to a batten vs in mast furler for the replacement and will be looking into my options regarding your suggestions. I have a feeling that I will be seeing this come together better than the original looming thought.
Prioritize what needs to be done in order. Make a list and go down the list item by item. Clean up and then take all the broken metal off the deck and decide what is salvagable and what needs to be sold for scrap.
Hurricane Andrew destroyed my boat. It was well insured. Added some more funds to the insurance payment and got a lot nicer boat. Cruised it for 10 yrs and 2 oceans. And then finally switch to yet another boat. Sold it (Kelly Peterson 44) for more than I paid for it 10 yrs ago. One thing that I did do was look for a new boat fairly quickly so as to avoid any fixed up hurricane damaged boats. People will raise a partially sunk boat, clean it up and sell it. Didn’t want that. I know of people that have done that.
It seems that in a hurricane prone area a better design of "jack stand " could be developed . With the safety of your boat rested on a couple of pipe stands sitting on sand doesn't seem like it has a chance against a hurricane . Sorry for everyones loss .
I agree. It had hurricane straps but they were just drilled into the dirt. I personally think it would need to be, at minimum, strapped to concrete anchors buried in the ground. With all the claims I'm surprised insurance companies don't require it. All that said, here we are.
Bro it's a big job that you can't do alone I'm sure people will come to help the sailing community and the pees on yt will come to help best of luck
Thanks
Is there not a identicall boat with severe hull damage written off from the hurricane from which u can obtain parts like maybe the mast. I would search for that first.
Will be looking for exactly that after assessing what I can salvage and what needs to be replaced.
Maybe buy a new mast profile and switch all the gear from the broken one over and maybe the roller furler inside can be repaired/welded but not sure.
Keep the cut sail, can make a deck tent out of it maybe
Start simple, get a win, clean the inside up. Then start on the outside, remove what is damaged, clean the boat and then start the external rebuild one piece at a time. What is damaged, see if it can be repurposed, repaired and reused or recycled as scrap. We are with you and look forward to sharing the journey with you.
2 things you need to fix a boat. 1. Time 2. Money. Get yourself a notepad and pencil. Sit down and start making a list of everything that needs to be fixed. Then one by one, start getting it done.
You are right on.
We just found your channel. We are so sorry to see what happened to you and your wife's dream. Your sailboat is definitely worth saving. You should be able to find a decent used mast in Florida fairly easily. Hang in there captain. We are wishing you and your wife the best of luck. Dont lose your dream.
Thanks a lot. It will all come together.
I LOVE MY BOAT SO MUCH ( HEART FELT) BLESSINGS TO YOU CAPT...
Thank you very much.
Wow…I am sure it’s overwhelming!!! Your post immediately after the hurricane gave a lot of us real insight as to the level of destruction. I lived in NJ for Hurricane Sandy- and had a lot of both boat and home damage. I don’t recall what you do for a living- but this will be your full time hobby…for some time. Its a beautiful boat and deserves to sail again. Some suggestions (offered with the best of intentions)- 1- Accept some help if its available locally- friends/family/fellow sailors can all pitch in with some of the work! (Some of us are retired and may be local?…or could pitch in several days at a time when you can take some time off to do more than a stop) 2- Find a way to place some inexpensive dehumidifiers fore and aft- deploy near sinks and let them just empty overboard. If you have access to electricity, consider timers to run them 12-16 hrs a day. If not- maybe use 12 v and add a solar panel to keep batteries topped off. 3- add some diesel fuel treatment to stabilize the fuel/consider also treating the water tanks 4- Strip the boat as best you can while you work and clean/salvage things at home to bring them back later….and get the food off ! Does the yard have a dumpster? 5-Double check you battery compartment and make sure everything is OK… 6- Congrats on starting the journey back !! You can do this! 7- You should include a link to your patreon page…😊 BTW…I loved your video of the Island Packet 439…went and saw it at the Annapolis Sailboat show…and am now having one built. She splashes in late November/Dec!
Yes. It took a while to come to grips with it and now I look at the task and laugh because what else can you do? I'm going to have fun figuring it out at this point.
Lot's of solid and helpful advice.
Congratulations on your new boat splashing later this year.
I just got a chance to read your whole comment and your list is perfect. And about the 439 Congratulations! That is amazing. I've heard nothing but great things about that yacht. If you ever need a hand, just let me know.
Happy to do so! Would love to have you aboard!
Wow. Looking forward to seeing you bite into projects and your eventual successes.
Thanks so much!
All the little observations and on boat comments is exactly what I like to hear when I'm researching a boat.
Thanks!
While this one is very nice, I still think the 60 with built in dingy storage is the way to go if your budget provides :)
This is impossible to disagree with.
God bless you and I hope you are able to recover well. I hope to get a boat to retire on I'm on a slim budget but I always wanted it live on my own boat.
Thanks a lot. I am working on it now and will get her back some how.
No nonsens een echte boot,nu de loterij winnen.
That is the plan
Dumb conservative forgets to switch accounts before posting his religious bigotry and revisionist history.
Did you realize that is Darrel Allen 9:55
At the time I had no idea who he was lol.
Wow! What a boat. I lived aboard a Hans Christian for almost 10 years and really get what this boat offers. Also, as a couple you guys are great. Excuse me for saying., You two are the future of the world and will save our planet.
That is really kind of you. I truly loved this boat and hope to graduate toe it one day. I'm also looking forward to the new 42 Motorsailer.
Dad gum it. So your boat was actually on stands and it fell over . Thats not good at all. I was wondering that because the mast was broken above the boat next to it. She is still a very nice boat even the way she is sir. She will be back for sure.
Thanks
