Off Grid CABIN VS. Tiny CONDO - REAL TALK!
Cabin VS CONDO! Which is simpler? For those in search of a simpler life, the answer may surprise you. Let me know below! I've spent years building then living in my own off grid cabin, doing van life, and now my current spot is a 300 square foot tiny condo in Old Quebec City. I lay it all out in this video to help you if you're wondering about simplifying your life. Good luck!

Envoyons D'L'avant - Song of Quebec

An old song straight out of the woods from Quebec! Filmed in front of an old relic at "Crooked Slide Park" in Barry's Bay, Eastern Ontario. I didn't put this song on Spotify or anything, just for the UA-cam crowd! I play all instruments except for the percussion, courtesy of Max Senitt. The oldest songs in Canada come from Quebec, a truly rich repertoire and cultural story. Une vieille chanson ...

This song of mine is called 'Pictured Rocks Moonrise', and didn't make it on to my last album. I just sent this off as a free download to my mailing list :) So I thought I would share it here along with this gorgeous sunset I watched on Superior's North shore a couple years ago. I was in Pukaskwa National Park in Canada, the setting was very serene and special :) The Video is NOT edited in anyw...

A beautiful tremolo piece by Sainz De La Mana called "Campanas del Alba", which means "Bells of Dawn". It was written in 1963, so quite a modern "classical"guitar piece. Enjoy! Is It Actually "Quiet" Out in Rural Areas?! My Thoughts
Don't know the guitar terms, but whatever you are doing, it's a unique sound and really "makes" your rendition.Great song! I'm surprised at how much I like this story. Me, a proponent of non-violence. Go figure. BTW, I've been meaning to thank you for always replying to my comments. I love connecting with you, even if it is only virtual and short!
Love getting your comments :)
Wonderful rendition. LOVE it,
Thank you so much!
I'm new to your channel!! 😊😊😊😊
Welcome :)
I really like the dividing door. it gives it really a homey atmosphere
An essential feature!!
I agree with the differences between off grid vs condo but I would never buy anywhere where there are associations to deal with of any kind. It is a nightmare. Right now, I know of someone who just got a $17,000 bill from an assessment and many other similar stories like this one. Nope thanks.
I wonder whether an oil lamp might be better for lighting. That way you have a light source that is not dependent upon your car and which will last a lot longer.
Sorta.. it could be doable. they are far more maintenance, and kinda smelly. I just like the simplicity and no-mess of the light (I did oil lamps for a while and regretted it)
Here in britain of course we have much the same as in ireland so we drive on the left too although here it is in miles not km by the way too.
Thank you there You could say too that britain uses the pound Stirling while ireland uses the euros too.
Oh gosh, Adam! I always come back to this one. Just so so very pretty & lovely!!
Thank you :) :)
Great video. Practical and simple 👌
Happy to help
A great perspective on both sides! I haven’t lived in a van or cabin, but had a wee taste of it momentarily with wild camping, sleeping in my car and fishing hut. It’s sure nice to open tap water and not chop wood all day when I get back, even if it’s just been days. 😅 Its good to swap what satisfaction you had at the cabin with things to do and projects you actually love (I mean chopping wood Is great, but they is so much more to do!). You’ll have definitely more time for that! 😊 Getting out of your comfort zone on a regular basis is a must too. Can’t let that comfort and easiness (is that even a word) take control. The machine doesn’t have to be an enemy, it has its sweet sides too. Doing something you love to pay bills definitely helps too. I’ll be heading up to revisit Vieux Quebec in a few weeks. I’ll be living the Sleeping in my car life for a few days. I do enjoy that a lot, probably because it’s momentarily.😂 Are you there for La Saint-Jean-Baptiste ? The energy is amazing!…Hope you like crowds 😂 I’ll be skipping that weekend, I don’t like crowds enough. 😅
I’m currently working on a cruise ship! I am missing all the fun :( haha
@@adamruzzo Haha! I’m sure you’re having a lot of fun working on the cruise ship :)
VERY accurate advice! And I do mean ACCURATE. The only correction I would make is to let everyone know Ireland's newer motorways (that's what highways are called in Ireland) have nice wide lanes and are very well maintained. They are a pleasure to drive on.
1688!!! WOW! Incredible architecture! Serene. I see now why you landed there.
;)
Transcendent...sacred...exquisite beauty...reverence...thin place at the river...branches reaching into eternity...I got so lost in this (in a good way) I didn't want it to end.
Thank you so much :)
Nice! Ya, I keep dreaming of cabin life one day. Stuck in the system at the moment but like you say, the Nice amenities of turning on the tap for water and hot showers is a bonus and being 5 minutes from work and 3-5 minutes from any store I need for groceries and supplies is nice. BUT, it does come with all the expenses of living that lifestyle. I'm hoping for a retirement one day of much more simpler off grid style living in a much smaller place or even combine it with a bit of overlanding lifestyle with a tiny camper or just an overlanding style vehicle. But for now it's all just a dream as I seem to just be working to live lately. 🤷♂️
Sounds like a good plan :) some people don’t mind doing lots of chores/tasking as part of the lifestyle either… it just started taking away from my energy and time for more important stuff.
Not bad at all
Adam, Happy Housewarming!!! Love your place! I’m very happy and excited for you! New beginning!
Thank you :) I’m embarrassed to say I’m getting good at “new beginnings” 🤣
I love your little cabin condo 🥰 and catching a glimpse of the cabin painting made me soooo happy!! ❤️
See I told ya!! And yes aspiring to be as cool as the bubbles shed
@@adamruzzo❤️
Well done Adam! Come for a visit before you go!
Hey Jenn!! Thanks, trying to plan a get away I’ll let ya know if I’m in the hood
Oh nice !!! Hope you enjoy your stay ! Are you planning doing gigs ?
Yes :) but I will be leaving soon to play guitar on some cruise ships. This is my last week actually. But I’ll be back. If you are here let me know!
Love all that informations Adam, i’ve been doing Van life for six years. The only thing I really miss is to be able to go take a shower and not have to drive to get to it. You know I live in Huntington Beach California so the weather is really nice pretty much year around but if I could find a 300 square-foot cheap, I would take it and if it’s in a good neighborhood I don’t need a lot of space. I’m pretty much a minimalist in a couple of weeks I’m moving into my new van. I’m excited about it. This one’s going to be different in a good way. Take care. 💕
Cool :) new van!! Yes when living is not a chore, living is a bit better! I have to get down to California
You've landed in a beautiful place. Living the dream Adam, very happy for you. Looking forward to more music. Cheers!
Ya thanks, I really like it here! A simple existence in a pretty place, works for me :)
Great video! My wife and I are living "the Dream" doing the vanl life (right?) We're going on 2 years soon and the natural progression was to find land and build just like you did. But I dont see much difference with cabin vs van life as both are small both are difficult and not very different other than a land locked roof over your head. So my mind wanders daily to moving back to Toronto and getting a small condo with a shower, toilet and a decent sized fridge. Thanks for doing this video because I can just skip the small cabin "dream" and live simply in a small condo in a city where you don't need a vehicle that rats can squat with you rent free.
Wow!! Yes I know the dilemma… oh my do I ever know this dilemma. Van life is harder than cabin life imo… but trust me , if you want true minimalism, a simple condo is the way. One welllll within the budget. But, you will feel the lack of adventure and fulfilment that the off grid journey brings. For me I just wanted MY TIME BACK. Like, I have stuff to do other than screw pieces of wood together and fix plumbing a stuff. I still dream of land, and may get some. But also learning more than ever that contentment is an INSIDE job! Anyways, my take.
@@adamruzzo My TIME BACK resonates...although I have nothing BUT time out here in the woods I find myself fixing, repairing, looking for camp spots, chopping wood, organizing, cleaning,...no time or space for me to get back to my favorite thing to do ...paint
@@CHICOandtheVAN yep… I don’t miss any of that nonsense. I feel you. Picasso or van gogh didn’t have time for any of that stuff either I bet!! ;) first world living is really a requirement for progressing in our craft I learned (the hard way!)
I hear ya!! Long story but I have a very sm home on a plot of land...am debt free and had my mind on this cabin that recently went up for sale. Well prior to it going on the market... My old back injury flared up big time!! I mean Big Time pain!! Yeah I got my chainsaw and all that, but reality is nobody is getting younger... staying right here...for now🤔 still dreaming 😊 so glad to hear from you!! Hey once you get some land ideas maybe time for a live episode where everyone gives their 2 cents and shares there stories just like you did here.🏞️
@@christiehuffman3823 good idea :) hope your back gets better!!!
After my trip in Ireland (wonderful landscape, by the way!), I can say that it was not that difficult to drive in the countryside. Sure, narrow roads, often I had to pull to the side, in tall grass, just to cross another vehicle, but no issue in 12 days. There was only one time I suddenly heard my car touching something hard, and that was when I was parking and the sidewalk was higher as expected. So I scratched the bottom of my bumper. But that was all I had. I can tell, as a manual/standard driver, no, if you're used to standard cars, don't bother with an automatic. Manual gears are the same in Ireland as in the rest of Europe. Also, yes, take a compact or small car. Narrow roads can have pretty harsh turns. And depending on where you drive, asphalt is sometimes replaced with plain dirt and gravel. But nothing that requires a 4x4. So, just take the cheapest and smallest car of the rental company, even if you have to drive for 3 hours on the highway. I was in Kerry, by the way. And not only on the ring (rarely, in fact). Just be careful of the sheep.
You are so right about peace and HOME. Solitude and it's cousin, Simplicity, are my best friends. Love hanging out with them! Their gifts are the finest. Your thoughts in this video bring back such longings for me, The call of the wild...
At the ready, your insight is most valuable 👹 Love
Absolutely love this. From your neighbor in the south, northern Minnesota…… This song plays in my head during a long portage, because I can’t carry a tune, nor speak French…. Thank you so much…..
Ahhh merci beaucoup!!! Thanks! That’s the greatest compliment I could ask for.
How did it hold up?
Worked super well, zero issues for YEARS. Outlasted my van actually!
Very interesting, thank you. Did you work for adventure Canada? That looked like Beechey island.
Haha :) wow good eye. I do work for them yes!
If difference between a local road to national and motorway
I loved your video, pretty much confirmed what I thought. I drove in Jamaica many years ago, sounds similar….
I've been driving around dublin for a few days I drive heavy wreckers in alaska and it's been a wild experience
That speaks volumes!
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ (you know, in case ♥doesn't get the point across😄!) So, this is Cajun music in Canada? It's totally different from the Cajun music here as with their French.
Yep :) traditional Acadian / Cajun fiddle music, born from sitting around the farm tables in grand pré no doubt !
I was just listening to Joan Baez - There But for Fortune and maybe its just me but I found similarities in your style, signing and tone of voice (except in female version). She’s a great artist and signer. 😊
I’ll take it’s a compliment:) btw, I’ve landed in vieux qc!
@@adamruzzo I kept thinking during the song Who does she remind me of and then it clicked! Definitely a compliment. J’aime tant cette ville! Ça fait quelques temps que je ne suis pas allée. Je dois aller y passer du temps bientôt!

Beautiful song, beautiful Canada! 🇨🇦❤️
Thanks John :) glad you ‘get it’!
First thing I noticed while driving in Ireland--why are there so many “tyre” shops? Second day I learned the answer. I ruined a tire and almost a wheel on the stones that are so close to the road! Driving is too stressful, next time I would take the train or bus!
I know the rocks you speak of!!
And there's something about that water! Geezum!
Your earlier instrumentals are just as beautiful as your later work. You are just so dang gifted, Adam, in so many ways! How fortunate for me that I am on the receiving end! (Was that a contrail in one of the scenes?)
You are so kind (a real gift in a sometimes cold world). Glad you found this :) I plan to do more like this. I always love hearing from you !
Here in Austria we had an intense storm in April too, it changed a lot.. so many trees broken. As if nature would say: let go of control, you don't have it anyway
Hi. I like your videos. Could you please recommend a celular phone company in Whitehorse Yukon?
Bell worked just fine for me :)
Tip1: If you cant thank a driver for yielding you because you are driving away from them, or simply going the opposite direction, toggle your hazards on for a few seconds then off. This will let the other driver know you're thanking them from a distance. Tip2: In a roundabout, if cars are waiting to enter the roundabout, but you are going to drive past them instead of taking the exit, sometimes especially on big roundabouts with multiple exits, it is common to turn the blinker facing the roundabout's center as in a way to tell drivers you are not exiting the roundabout yet. Same as you should ALWAYS use your blinkers to signal that you intend to exit the roundabout. Tip3: Because of narrow roads, especially on 2 way roads, truck drivers will sometimes stick to the left so you can see the incoming traffic, and even use a hand gesture telling you that it´s safe to overtake them. Tip4: Some times pedestrians will not cross the road and yield cars with hand gestures, it is completely up to you to let them pass or not. In my opinion and following the traffic law, I always let them pass no matter what, as some times they indicate you can pass but another ped is crossing from the opposite side, and if you don't spot them you may run them over. (Especially kids) Hope this helps, drive safe!

Dude, you're right about everything you just said but my last 3 vehicles were new, which makes sense for me. Life is short and time is precious. No one can live long enough to learn everything about everything. I have no desire to be an auto mechanic just like I have no desire to be a farmer. I would rather spend my time on activities I value, like learning a new art style or even a new recipe, than learning how to repair my vehicle. Second reason, I'm a solo vanlife woman and it's not safe for me to breakdown everywhere and anywhere. Third reason, I'm lucky enough to have the money to pay a car note and I don't value money to the point I need to save every dollar. For me, the purpose of any money I get is to contribute to my happiness. I drive a lot because I live in my minivan 9 to 12 months a year and having a new minivan, with all the bells and whistles, makes me happy and keeps me safe. I like and need 360 views. I like heated and cooled seats. I like touching the door handle to lock my vehicle. I like having an app to find and lock my vehicle. I like all the new safety enhancements. I have never had a fancy sports car, I'm literally in a minivan because art and travel are most important to me, but happiness and joy are never mentioned when people talk about how an expensive vehicle is just ego. A 10,000 sq ft house for just one person is ego. A brand new expensive sports car might be ego, but it's definitely fun. And it's fun every single time they drive it, which is several times a day. Plus they're happy every time they look at it, both of which counts for a lot. That being said, I kept my last used vehicle for 16 years and then gave it away to someone who needed it. In 16 years, the only non- maintenance parts I replaced on that car was the serpentine belt and and radiator. Most people will end up spending way more than $10,000 on parts and labor for their used vehicle in way less than 16 years. Hopefully I can keep this minivan for 20 years, if not longer, and then give it away to someone in need too. So yeah, used is awesome and so is new.
I actually completely agree with you. About a year after this video, the transmission went for the third time. It was my “never again” moment. And at this point in my process… spending more buys you more ease, a better existence and peace of mind, which is pure wealth on the road.
This is awesome Adam! Can’t wait for it to come out.
Thanks Vince :) long road ahead! Aiming for this years end.
