Academy 1/72 Scale P-51B Mustang (Build Video)
One of the most legendary fighter aircraft of all time. The North American P-51 Mustang rise to prominence began with the P-51B Mustang. By powering the aircraft with a licensed built Rolls Royce Merlin engine. Which was a vast improvement over the P-51A Mustang, powered by the Allison V-1710 engine. Other mods included in the P-51B were increased loads to 1,000 lbs under each wing, and a redesigned belly scoop.
The first P-51B exited the assembly line and flew in May of 1943. The P-51C model flew 3 months later. Problems for the P-51B and C models included poor visibility towards the rear. The RAF found the best solution (at the time) for the visibility issue was installing a "Malcolm Hood" which was a bubble type canopy around the pilot's area of the birdcage. The new hood was on rails sliding rearward for an easy in and out. The old canopy was hinged and more difficult for an emergency bailout. The "Razorback" Merlin Mustangs P-51B and P-51C remained in service until the end of the war.
As for the model this model by Academy is a nice representation of the P-51B. The kit also gives one the option to make a Hinged Canopy or Malcolm Hood P-51B. As for the markings I made a set of custom homemade decals. Depicting the P-51B Mustang flown by Lt. Virgil E. “Sandy” Sansing, 359th Fighter Group, 369th Fighter Squadron ,East Wretham, June 1944. Who while flying his P-51B Mustang. On June 20, 1944, his squadron attacked the Château-Thierry train station to slow down German reinforcements advancing towards the landing beaches.
During his third strafing pass, Sansing's aircraft was hit in the fuel tank and began to burn. Bailing out soon after, he landed a short distance from a wood in Puiseux en Retz. Fearing capture, he immediately left the premises and encountered a woman working in a field. She accepted to help him and took him to the village. He was hidden in various locations and avoided capture for two weeks, despite repeated German searches. Eventually the French Resistance helped Sansing to return to Allied lines.
Until next time thank you for watching this video. And good luck with all your ongoing projects. From Shuttle Factory Scale Models.

Fantastic....................I love brush painting.
Thank you so much. I'm glad to hear you love brush painting too!
Awesome build as always. Ps: would you build more p47's?
Thank you I'm glad you liked it. Yes I might one of these days make another P-47 Thunderbolt, most likely the Razorback.
Sweet, I always love Mustang builds.
Thank you, glad you liked it!
Good build 👍🏼🍻😃 Are you not a fan of Academy's decals?
She looks good! Your decals are very convincing too 👍🏻👏🏻👌🏻 Do you thin the paints before you attack with the brush?
@@septiccalling8341 thank you. Yes I always thin my paints before brush painting the kit. I just forget to film myself doing that step.
@@NielsenDK-1 thank you. Academy's decals are infamous for not being that great. So I try and use alternative decals instead
Beautiful plane. . Many thanks
Thank you too! And thank you for watching!
What happened to the landing gear?😮….it’s not a BF-109! 😅
You lined up the 2 banks of 7 cylinders directly behind each other....they should be offset.
I have built that model as well. Nice job!
Thank You, I'm happy to hear that you have made this model too!
Hope you don't mind me suggesting this. When removing the panel wash, go against the direction of the panel, not with it. That way you'll leave a better result. Cool build
Thank you for the good tip!
Nice build 😳🏆 Edit: I didn't know that acrylics brush so well. 😯
thank you, a lot of acrylic paint now has been made much more brush friendly.
Excellent video!!!, excellent selected music, congratulations!!
Thank you very much!
Nice model, great idea to add the historical footage for context.
Thank You I'm glad you loved seeing the archived footage too. It's not often one sees footage of the RNZAF during WW2
Great job! Love the superb one-off decals making a lovely unique model.
thank you i'm glad you loved the custom paint scheme
Fantastic work and what an eye-catching scheme
Thank you I'm glad you liked the paint scheme
Brush painting, the model version of what the knife is to assassins :)

Muito bacana. Está de parabéns com seu modelo!!!
thank you so much
I have a few Hobby Boss 1/72 scale aircraft. Nice easy builds and great detail. Plan to get a few more. I really like how your P47 came out. Professional job.
Thank you James, your so right about the Hobby Boss easy build line. I have also built both thier T-6 Texan and F-86 Sabre kits and have enjoyed making them. Might be getting a few more of these kits one of these days..........
Give the Hobby Boss 1/72 P 38 a try . Extra detail in and out. .Don't forget the nose weight.
Also forgot to mention. Hobby Boss 1/72 Don Gentiles P51b. The shangri-la. Excellent detail.
@@JamesChechele I'm currently working on my next video on the Adcademy 1/72 P-51B Mustang in a D-Day paint scheme. So might have to give the hobby boss kit ago and of course I need to get a P-38 Lightning kit!
Realy nice painting. Quality flat paint really makes the difference. Enjoy your builds
Thank you James, you are so right about a good paint. Thanks for watching too!
I'm enjoying your videos, I'd like to see what you could do with a first-rate kit and an airbrush.
Thank you I’m glad you’re liking my videos. Maybe one of these days I will tackle a great kit with an airbrush. But now I am happy with the simpler kits, with less to worry about.
The Airfix P-40 kit isn't what I'd call a great kit but Ithis is a decent build, spesh with the all-brush finish. Nicely done.
Thank you 😀
Well tidy P-40,👍👍
Thank You 😀
Great brush work as always 👍.
Thank You Andrew 😀
Impressive work, with a brush no less!
Thank you so much!
Nice build! Fan of the early USAAF markings. Recently built a couple of these 1/72 Airfix kits (Walsh & Taylor’s 7 Dec P-40B’s), a 1/72 Academy (79PS P-40B), and a 1/72 Monogram P-40N (Herbst “Tommy’s Dad). The Airfix kit scales very well for 1/72, within 5” (using my laser accurate tape measure of course 😂) of the real aircraft. The Monogram kit is closer to 1/67 scale overall but still looks good for a 1960 mold. The Academy kit needs a little wing work to achieve a satisfactory dihedral (built as is the wings have zero angle) but also scales well like the Airfix kit.
Thank You I am glad to hear you loved the early USAAC markings, of this model. Also, I am glad to hear you have made this kit as well, in Dec 7th colors too. Along with both a classic Monogram P-40 kit and the academy kit as well. Speaking about the Academy P-40 kits, I made the 1/72 scale Academy P-40M/N kit last year. In the colors of a RNZAF Operational Training Unit P-40N , based in NZ circa 1944. And yes, if your keen I did make a build video on it too. Anyway, thanks for watching and good luck with all of, your ongoing projects too.
Nice build😃 I enjoy to see a skilled brush painter in action. Cheers👍🏼🍻
Thank You I am very happy to hear that you liked it. And thanks for watching too!
I don't think I will ever get bored of seeing P-40 models! I love how you did the custom scheme on this one :D
Thanks Matt, I do not know how anyone can ever be bored looking at a P-40 in model form or in the flesh. I am not even sure its humanly possible to not like the P-40. Anyway, I am glad you loved the custom paint work on this one. As soon as I saw an Illustration of the real USAAC P-40b. I just had to make a model of it in those colors
another great build, enjoyable to watch, well done again nephew.
Thank You Uncle glad you loved it!
That was a fun watch to wake me up! Nice one....👍🏻👏🏻👌🏻
Thank You I am glad you loved it. Have a great day too!
Amazing work!
Thank You so much!
how do you calculate resize the print out for the underside?
I didn't need to calculate the size for the print. Luckly Airfix always list model's final size (both length and wingspan) on the box. Which saved me a great deal of time, trying to measure the model.
@@ShuttleFactoryScaleModels I see, thanks man
Not using airbrush or spray can even once throughout the video? What side of UA-cam I'm on 🙃 Looks great and has dare I say "old timey" look to it, like that too.
if you didnt paint it in the manfred way, consider yourself an opp
Looks cool.
Thank You :)
I thought it was already colored, but it turns out it has to be colored. 😢
I know it's a starter kit but why did Airfix leave out the under fuselage winglets? Well tidy build though.
Good question Kenneth, one can only speculate why that detail is missing. It is not like that is a very small part. That would be hard for a first timer to attach to the model. Anyway, thanks for watching!
Nice work again nephew. Great job.
Thanks Uncle glad you loved it!
looks great! That red paint is really hard to use and I think you did a good job!
Thank You Matt, glad that you liked it. Also, I am very happy to hear that you loved the red paint work on this model too.
Ah yes, the old "new" style pots supposedly have been redesigned to prevent the drying problem. Despite this, I think you did a great job!
That is good news to hear that Humbrol/Airfix have fixed the paint problem. For a scale modeller like me with a healthy paint supply it was not too much of an issue. I cannot even imagine how frustrating for a beginner it would be to find dried paint in the starter set. Anyway, thank you Matt. I am glad you loved seeing my take on this kit. And hopefully the next starter set I tackle ,will not have dried paint in the box.
Airfix should do a lot more to fix the paint problem, its putting a lot of new people off our wonderful hobby.Cmon Airfix put it right.Well tidy build btw.
Hopefully the paint problem will be fixed by Humbrol/Airfix. Minus the paint issues I had with this kit. It is always a joy to make an Airfix model of the Supermarine Spitfire. Thanks for watching and liking the model, Kenneth.
Beautiful job as always my friend!
Thank You I'm glad you liked it
Hi everyone here is the link to the Supermarine Spitfire Mk Vc video: ua-cam.com/video/4KHGX7mA9Dw/v-deo.html Unfortunately, all the include Humbrol paint pots in this starter set were bone dry. So instead, I used my stock pile of Vallejo Acrylic model paints as a replacement. Even with this minor setback, I was still able to make a nice model out of the kit. In the meantime, please make sure to check out the first part of the video following the link above. Until next time good luck with all your ongoing scale modelling projects. Very nice. I like it 👌
Thanks a lot 😊
I started the hobby a little while ago and this bf 109 is my first kit ever. I'm going to paint it using brushes. Any recommendations for a beginner modeler? (Also great job fella)
Let me welcome into the wonderful world of scale modelling. It is always nice to hear from someone just getting involved with this hobby. When it comes to brush painting a scale models. I have found is always best to have a good collection of Flat Head and Round Head brushed, that have soft bristles. As for brush painting a model aircraft. Its always best to try and have the brush strokes running from nose to tail. And from the wing roots out to the wing tips. And apply thin layers of paint in at least 2-3 coats. With a good amount of drying time between each coat. If you want to attempt the mottled camouflage on your BF-109, as seen in the video. Just take your time with it. And above all have fun with this hobby. Hope this is of some help for you.
If you want a bit simpler paintjob for the first one, I can recommend the Academy BF-109 G-14. it's the plane of Erich Hartmann, and has an overall white paintjob, with the unique markings supplied as decals.
Wondering what colour you painted the air intakes? Not sure if I should paint it black or navy blue .
This is an absolute masterpiece of a model 🤩
Thank you so much !
