Hi there, great looking model. This paint scheme was a little before my time but I was there at Wigram when they were finally retired while completing my senior training at No.2TTS in 1976-77 - and there when they closed the Base in 1995 (:-(. Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work.

Hi Brent, it is really wonderful to hear from a former member of the RNZAF. That is amazing you were there at Wigram when the Harvard was retired from RNZAF service. It must have been quite the jump for everyone in No. 2TTS in 1976-1977 to move from the WW2 era Harvard to the modern CT/4 Airtrainer. And quite the somber day for everyone when the gates of Wigram were closed in 1995. Thank you for sharing your experiences with everyone and thank you for watching!

Very impressive build! Your hand painting is excellent on that metallic and orange finish :D (loved the little details added to the cockpit too)

Thank you, Matt, for your very kind words. One of my only slight gripes I had with this kit was the missing roll cage frame. Then again most of Hobby Boss 1/72 aircraft kits are geared towards the beginner. So, nothing a bit of styrene rod couldn’t fix.
I'm also very glad the way that the fluorescent orange turned out (via the hairy stick). Minus the 7 to 9 layers of thin paint it needed! Then again, I could have gotten away with a ruff coat orange. The fluorescent orange paint applied to the RNZAF’s fleet of T-6 Texans, Vampire T.11s and De Havilland DH-104 Devon’s during the 1960s; had a very bad habit of fading out (due to the New Zealand’s very high UV levels). Often revelling the underlaying white coat. Resulting in the need for constant repainting of the orange.
In fact, the aftermarket decal sets instructions, came with a colour photograph of the real NZ1078. Which shows the tail segment with the paint work faded out. I was tempted to recreate that look in miniature. But having made a 1960s era RNZAF Vampire T.11 with pristine paintwork (free of UV ray fading). It wouldn’t look right to have the Harvard looking in a poor state next to the Vampire T.11 on the shelf. Anyway, thanks for watch Matt!

Love it. I agree with all the comments made so far. Great work again mate. And I learnt what the hairy stick is..... Not what I initially thought....

Nice work. I really appreciate modelling videos that show painting being done with a paint brush as opposed to an airbrush....for me it just makes the hobby seems a bit more attainable. Have you tried applying a primer with a brush? I have had some success with vallejo surface primer with a brush and migammos one shot primer as well. Keep up the good work!

Thank you, Andrew, I’m glad you appreciate the fact the model was brush painted. As for brush painting primer, yes, I have done that in the past (using Vallejo Surface Primers). Before switching to spray can primer. I still use the odd bit of brush primer if I need to re-sand and reprime an area of a kit that might need more filler. Thanks for watching too & good luck with all your ongoing projects.

Thank you I am glad you loved seeing my model of NZ1078 in its 1960s to early 1970s colours. It proudly sits on the shelf next to my model of a RNZAF De Havilland Vampire T.11 (NZ5709). In the 1960s era silver & fluorescent orange trainer scheme. With both aircraft proudly sporting the infamous silver fern roundels.

Nice colors, and Great aircraft choice. I would for sure invest in a nice airbrush system though.

Thank You I'm glad you loved the 1960s era RNZAF paint scheme. As for getting an airbrush it's one of those things, that I'll get one of these days

Can you build this kit with wheels up?

    • @ShuttleFactoryScaleModels

The kit only comes with the option to have the landing gear down. However, it should not be too hard to glue the gear in the inflight position.
