Furness Railway No. 20 at Ribble Steam Railway
Furness Railway No. 20 pulls the father's day special at the Ribble Steam Railway on 16th June 2024.
Built in 1863 by Sharp Stewart & Co to run on the Furness Railway, this 0-4-0 tender locomotive is the country’s oldest working steam locomotive.
A sharp rise in traffic on the Furness Railway in the 1860′s resulted in this class of small four wheeled engines becoming obsolete and in 1870 it was sold on to the Barrow Haematite Steel Co. with 5 of its sister engines, where it remained in service for 90 years. It was withdrawn just 3 years short of its centenary!

Narrow gauge steam engine "Sea Lion" travelling from Lhen Coan to Sea Lion Rocks and back at the Groudle Glen Railway (Isle of Man) on 29th July 2023. Sea Lion was built by WG Bagnall Ltd (Stafford) and has pulled trains since the opening of the line in 1896. The line was built to transport visitors to the zoo that was built following the opening of the Manx Electric Railway.

It's magic to see Sea Lion working the train. Looks like you got a bit of Manx windy weather on the day as well.. Gura mie ayd.
It was during the anniversary celebrations last summer. On the Saturday it was just Sea Lion hauling the train, and on the Sunday they had all the locos out taking it in turns. I've got some footage from that which I'll have to put together.
She is such an awesome little lady! Hard working and quite spritely as she goes about her work! As a resident of Arizona, I am overwhelmed by how deliciously GREEN the countryside she works in is! Thank you for sharing this wonderful video with us. ❤❤❤

Thanks. I gather the split headcodes is original and the flush front at the other end was a replacement for accidental damage at some point, though I'm not sure it is known when this occurred. Certainly, this mismatch must be rare if it isn't unique.
Great video, 37075 must be the only 37 with split headcodes at one end and the flush front at the other.

Fairbourne is a small village just south of the town of Barmouth in west Wales. Quite a remote area (for the UK at least) and a very pretty part of the country.

Where is the coal stored in the locomotive.
The lower sides of the cab have built in coal storage "bins" that are accessible to the crew inside the cab. In some of the close up shots you can see the top of the bin with a shovel sticking out of it.

Someone has previously commented that for the size of Oswestry town it was official vandalism to axe their rail contact to the outside world. Like everything these days ,inspiration to get things back up and running is up to a community and some hard work by volunteers. I wish them every success in re establishing their main line connection.

This line was finished quite recently, wasn't it?
I think the history is a bit more complicated. From what I gather, the line was in place from the mid 80s, but they weren't able to run passenger trains until early 2000s. There are plans to extend the line further south. The bit that is new is the traverser at Corris station, which is seen in action in the video, to allow locos to change ends of the train. What's with the single disc on the center of the buffer beam? I thought that was light engine move?
Not sure exactly. I think the single disc represented a number of routes (including some light engine ones), particularly in the Battersea area (the engine was based at Nine Elms shed for some time), so it may be some historical artifact from that.
A bit more research gives the more obvious answer, it's the L&SWR headcode for Swanage and Wareham...
