    I feel like that’s the kind of question that doesn’t have one particular answer. Off the top of my head, the way we adultify boys at an early age may cause them to see novels as childish, but that doesn’t explain the interest in fantasy or sci-fi. Another thought is that reading novels is associated with women and society deems womanly activities as inferior, so men avoid doing such, unless it is a more “masculine” forms of fiction like fantasy and sci-fi. Again, there’s likely multiple factors involved, but these are the two that crossed my mind.

    • @CBSmith-js9yl
      @CBSmith-js9yl 16 днів тому

      @@pseudodidact3956 I’m gonna respectfully disagree on your take of adultifying young boys at an early age unless you and I are just thinking of different things and we re talking pass each other. One of my sources brings up how when more women read that’s when the attitude towards reading (especially genres popular by women) became negative. But Yes, multiple factors that I would not be able to fit in a 5 min video or a puff piece article but I think that professor from that Dazed article hit a decent nail on the head with hustle culture.

      @pseudodidact3956 16 днів тому

    The book was interesting as it contained a lot of philosophical discussions. It may not necessarily have been Heinlein's own ideology, but more of a "what if" scenario for storytelling in that world. For me, the book fails as science fiction because so much of it is flashbacks to philosophy discussions in the classroom or just everyday boot camp scenes. There ends up being shocking little "sci-fi" stuff in the book at all, much less the epic fights with giant space bugs we were promised.

    Cool video, CB. Yeah, hunting has always been a controversial topic. Most people simply seem to view hunters as blood thirsty animal murderers, and many animals have in fact been hunted to extinction in the past. Poaching still exists as well. However, many other hunters are the best conservationists around, have a deep respect for nature and its wildlife, and are very concerned about the balance of its ecology. Where I live in Ohio, there are tons of deer running around because there are no remaining natural predators to keep the herds in balance; thus you need deer hunting season, otherwise you'll just crash into them with your car.

    I read this in high school, or maybe Jr. High. I didn't find it awful then, but I think I did wonder if it was necessary to show love by doing that and also wondering if it would even be possible for a bunch of 12yo to do the deed. In fact, I think I was actually a year or two older than the kids. I dunno, I think I remembering it being kind of sweet and romantic and wondering why Bev chose Bill and not Ben. I know I understood Ben to have been the only boy who showed lust and brought Bev to orgasm and understanding it was because he loved her. As an adult, it weirds me out more, but for reasons that arent, "kids shouldnt have sex" but more the emotional repercussions of sex. Positive and negative. Also, the fact that Bev gets her period shortly after. She came real close to getting pregnant in a sewer. The scene didnt bother me horribly as a kid. The *idea* of the scene doesn't bother me as an adult but the graphic way it was written, does. Kisses would have sufficed.

    The reason the story is entitled "Hook" is because this movie explores that fact that Hook is the _other half_ of Peter Pan. It's a tradition in adaptations of Peter Pan that the actor playing Hook also plays Wendy's Father - George Darling; because from that perspective, Hook is what children fear they will one day grow up into - miserable and mean. The idea of "all grown-ups are pirates" is essentially the childlike belief that the grown-ups are the "bad-guys." The story states that Peter has "become a pirate," follows this tradition - while Peter and Hook are played by different actors, the message is still that Peter has become like Hook. One might almost say that the catalyst that sets-off the story, is Peter losing his temper with the kids' playing while he's on the phone with Brad. That's the point where he scared his children and they saw him for what he was instead of what they wanted him to be. But this story is all about Peter having a second-chance to rediscover that missing part of him so that he can play with his kids and be the kind of father he wanted to be. Hook is there to provide contrast... In a sense, without the Crocodile, Hook no longer has to fear death coming for him - he's essentially just as immortal as Pan. But the problem is, Pan _completes him._ All these years he's basically had free reign to do what he wanted in Neverland because the Lost Boys are now too afraid to go against him without Pan. But with his success, Hook has grown bored. His obsession with Peter in this story isn't necessarily 100% hatred and a desire for revenge. He wants to recapture what they once had so that he can feel _alive_ again. In a sense, Hook is a child who wants his friend back; the friend who played games with him. That's why he's so surprised at Peter when in the climax, right before their final battle, Peter actually turns away and tries to leave with Jack and Maggie. Hook is so stunned that Peter doesn't want to stay and finish the fight; that he doesn't want to play the game with him. "Where are you going?" Basically, Hook had the same opportunity that Peter did. The tragedy of Peter Pan is that, he knows what he felt for Wendy but he didn't understand it and even feared it. And according to Barrie's original novel, children don't understand that love is not _one directional._ Children can often seem selfish because they believe they'll always have their parents' love for them, and thus love from everybody unconditionally. They don't realize that unless they return that love in a meaningful way, the people they love might not be there. That's why Peter decides to stay with Moira; he was shocked to see that Wendy had grown old, but realized he had a second chance with Moira. In a sense, Peter was ready to mature - to leave the childish fantasy behind - because he had found something better. He was ready to grow-up. Hook could have done that. He could have found meaning again had he gone back to the real world. But he chose to stay in the fantasy and keep running away from his problems. It's the danger that Peter could have slipped back in near the end of the movie. But Peter is able to remember that he has a life and responsibilities back in the real world so he can't stay in Neverland. He's gotten what he needed; his childhood wonder back and is able to play with his kids. It's an ironic reversal; when first confronted in the story, Hook is dismayed to see that Peter has become a sad and pathetic old man. And yet, that is how Peter leaves Hook near the end of the story, believing that despite Hook deserving to die, he's ultimately a pathetic old man who has lost everything. Plus, I could also go into the metaphorical nature of what Hook tries to do with Jack in the story being an allegory for a Step-Father alienating a Biological Father out of a relationship with their child. So yes, by this story being about Peter, it's also 100% about Hook.
