    Suggest you check the hydraulic oil level, the noise other than the motor may indicate that it is a little short. This would also be reflected in the operating speed. Better at full mark than the lower. Most use sae 22 hydraulic fluid. If you going to use in very low temperature, drain oil reservoir & replace with ATF. Recommended by other manufacturers . . . Keep safe, enjoy your tool !

  • @trwilkinson4623
    @trwilkinson4623 4 місяці тому

    Suggest you check, hone the leading edge of the splitting wedge finer. It allows the log to split easier & leave a less stringy finish in certain woods. A dual wedge head is a worthwhile investment, if you have a lot of knotty, stringy logs.

    How do you bleed the hydraulic system when you first get it?

    • @DW-dy7em
      @DW-dy7em 5 місяців тому

      This comes ready to use right out of the box, minimal setup, just put the wheels on is all, it comes full of hydraulic fluid, you just have to make sure you open the air valve before you do use it, and then close it back again when done.

    • @trwilkinson4623
      @trwilkinson4623 3 місяці тому

      Suggest, even out the box, check the hydraulic fluid level. Other manufacturers say to bleed air from system, open little bleed screw, then proceed to operate the ram, no log, to full extent. Hold for a couple of seconds on overload, release, return to start, repeat a few times. If air is in the system, the ram may judder & make whooshing noises as it travels. When fully primed, the sound will be consistent till overload relief valve opens. Most use SAE 22 hydraulic fluid. If going to be used in very low temperature, at below freezing, drain SAE 22 and replace with ATF. Keep safe, enjoy working your tool.

    How is there that much rated difference between this splitter and the numerous versions of the 5 ton electric ? The amperage is surely close to the same, or the 9 ton would kick 20 amp breakers incessantly.

    • @DW-dy7em
      @DW-dy7em 5 місяців тому

      That is a good point, and this splitter has kicked a breaker one time on me so far, but other than that, I've had Zero issues with it, and this is the only log splitter I've ever operated, so I really can't say exactly how it would compare to a 5 or 6.5 ton electric splitter, maybe there's really not that much difference, and the smaller rated splitter would do just fine.

    • @trwilkinson4623
      @trwilkinson4623 3 місяці тому

      From what I have read, the higher splitting force units have more powerful motors ( W ) & or thicker piston rod. Alternatively the pressure relief valve could be set differently.

    I’ve got the boss 7 ton and it works well. If you are curious there’s a video on our channel somewhere. But one thing I really like about yours is the high speed. Looks a lot faster. I was initially looking at this splitter also. I was and still am blown away by how powerful these little electric splitters are. I’ve probably put 10 plus cord through mine in about a year and a half. Great video! Thanks for sharing

    • @DW-dy7em
      @DW-dy7em 6 місяців тому

      Thank you!! I watched your video too, yours also has the One-Hand operation that I really like, I do like the 2 speed option of mine, that does speed it up a bit and is nice, it looks like yours after you split a log, yours comes back faster than mine, mine does have the set screw where you can set it to shorten the distance the ram does come back for smaller logs to help speed that up, but my logs are all different sizes so I don't really use that feature much lol I'm the same as you, I can't believe how much power these electric log splitters have now, they really make it convenient for one person to be able to split their own wood so much faster!! So glad I purchased mine as well!

    Two observations: (1) this thing sits so low my back hurts just watching this poor guy stoop down to split every piece, and (2) its...S...L...O...W! I'd love to go electric but turtle mode seems to be its top speed. I'm in my 70's, I just don't have that long. I'll stick with the gas model - and believe me as the owner of two EV's it pains me to say that.

    • @DW-dy7em
      @DW-dy7em 6 місяців тому

      Hello! Yes, this is very low to the ground, and this was literally my first experience with this log splitter, I have had to make a few adjustments to use it, at first I thought about building something to raise the splitter up, but, I am actually getting kind of used to it now, I just put a stool or good solid log behind it to sit on, and just pile my logs right behind the splitter, and I actually don't have to get up or move around that much to use it, and I kind of like just sitting and splitting the wood, but you are right, my back was killing me that first day trying to bend over to use this, DO NOT recommend that AT ALL!! lol And YES! You are right, that is probably the one biggest con I have about this, it is kind of slow, and compared to the gas powered ones, Probably a lot slower, I think that is the one thing you do get from those is speed, this one has plenty of power, but its not going to win any races, if you are doing a high volume, this one probably isn't the one, so far I am very happy with mine after getting used to it a bit, but you make some very good points!!

  • @josh817
    @josh817 6 місяців тому

    Did anybody have a problem with theirs where it overloads and loses pressure (motor still running)? I was trying to split some really twisted oak and it struggled, overload, piston went back, and handle doesn't do anything all while the motor is still running. You have to turn it off and on again to get it functioning again. It's more a nuisance than anything and the manual doesn't so anything about overload protection/resetting.

    • @DW-dy7em
      @DW-dy7em 6 місяців тому

      I have not had this issue yet... lol I say yet, I've tried to split some pretty nasty stuff too, not much though, but if it tries and can't get through it, I just back it off, because this thing will keep trying and I think it can just overload itself, but then I'll just turn the log and try another direction, and then its gets through eventually, I haven't had a log yet I couldn't split with mine.

    • @trwilkinson4623
      @trwilkinson4623 3 місяці тому

      A possibility is that the overload valve is not correctly adjusted or the bleed screw hasn't been opened & a seal has been damaged, guessing from personal use, not this make but similar type machine.

    I have to say after seeing what you are wanting to split...the size, etc, that my 5 ton electric Harbor Freight electric splitter would be entirely adequate to run through your wood, but you bought a 9 ton splitter, bully for you. My HP splitter is 15 years old and still runs as great as it did when I first bought it!

    • @DW-dy7em
      @DW-dy7em 6 місяців тому

      lol you are probably right, I bet it would do 99% of the logs I split, I'm not doing anything crazy here, or any large volume, I guess maybe I was being a bit of a bully here, I just wanted the extra power just because lol, that's amazing that yours has lasted so long!! That is actually very encouraging as I wasn't sure what to expect for life expectancy for one of these electric splitters, I hope mine lasts as long as yours!!

    Are you using a foot pedal to run? I've seen that as an accessory for electric log splitters.

    • @DW-dy7em
      @DW-dy7em 6 місяців тому

      I have seen those too, I was not using a foot pedal, this Log Splitter is just a One-Hand operation splitter, once you start the electric motor, the motor runs continuously, and all you have to do is just work the lever in the back to operate the ram to split the logs, I have made no modifications to this, what you see in the video is straight out of the box right from the factory.

    Like the song says, a little less talking and a lot more action! over 8 minutes in before he gets it unboxed! If I were to order this, I would have it shipped to the store, and then have them load it in a small trailer for me. Get another person to help you set it up on a metal stand at work height. Have a table on the opposite side of where you stand to catch that part of the log, no bending over except the one time to pick up the piece....even better, load several pieces in a garden cart and as they are being split, toss the splits into a two wheeled wheelbarrow, then move and stack. Less bending over! Presently I have a 5 ton HF electric splitter with the set up above. I used an adjustable clamp to clamp the switch on, then it is a one hand two speed operation. It is 15 years old, but if it ever goes out, I will buy this one to replace it....MORE POWER....Argg Argg!

  • @mikeh8228
    @mikeh8228 7 місяців тому

    Wish you had stated the price of this unit, but guess I can look it up. I have the Harbor Freight 5 ton model and have had no problems splitting knotty pieces, you just have to know how to orient the piece to start it. And what is the throat depth?? You said shorter than what you expected, but what is that? My 5 ton will split up to 20" long wood and that is all I want....my wood burner, a 35 year old Riteway, will take 24" wood but my wife likes 20 to 18" as it is easier to load with out getting crosswise and hung up. And I agree. My HF wood splitter is over 15 years old and still runs like new. It sits on an old metal frame table from my wood shop, never toss metal stands when the equipment goes bad! HA HA Anyway, I have a table I built slightly shorter than the splitter height, so that I can stand or sit on a bar stool when doing my splitting. The large piece falls on the table, not on the ground. No bending over to pick it back up! I have a garden cart that I put the rounds in, bring to the splitter, and a 2 wheeled wheel barrow that I toss the splits into. Once the log is bucked up, and loaded in the garden cart, I never have to bend over to deal with it again. That is because I am 74 years old and my back is not as limber as it used to be. But as you get older you figure these things out more efficiently. I would never try and split at the height you are doing it. I also agree with one of the other posters, set it up in the dry, then when it is snowing or raining and you want some exercise, you and the machine will not get wet! HA HA Quick way to kill any electric log splitter is to leave it out in the weather! Anyway, I will check out the price of this unit, just for the knowledge! Thanks.

    • @DW-dy7em
      @DW-dy7em 7 місяців тому

      Thanks for watching and for the comment!! I didn't want to say the price because it does seem to move around a bit, I've went back and checked again, and seen the price higher than what I paid, and lower than what I paid, so just have to keep an eye on the price in your area, but I would think you could find this one for less that $500, so that compared to a gas powered one that will be $1,000 or more, it compares pretty well!! My manual says it will split up to 20.5" inches, so about the same as yours I guess, my fireplace is 24", so when I'm down the end of a log, I guess I just try to do 3 cuts instead of 4!! lol 95% of my logs fit just fine, its just a few that are a bit too long. I've gotten used to the height of my splitter now and actually don't mind it, now I just actually try to stack my wood better right behind the splitter, get a stool and I can just split everything and not have to move, just grab a log and split it, no bending over, and not standing up, I still might try getting it up a little higher to split wood, but for now, I'm liking the height. I sure hope I'm able to keep doing this when I'm 74 years old!! That is amazing!!!

    • @DW-dy7em
      @DW-dy7em 8 місяців тому

      That's a good question, it showed delivered because the original carrier had passed it off to another carrier, so they did deliver it, just not to me yet, and they were done with it at that point, it just made it very confusing and even the store didn't know what was going on because on their side, they saw that it showed delivered as well, so at first it seemed like maybe someone took my package or something, I was not very happy at the time! lol so yeah, just to avoid a few headaches, I'd have it shipped to the store, because it won't come UPS or FedEx, its too big for them, it will come via LTL Freight, and that is not very convenient. I bought mine from Home Depot online. I am still considering either building something or I was looking at those Gorilla Yard Carts, if you put a little platform on one of those, and could somehow get this up on it, it would still be on wheels and move around easy, and I think that would be about the right height, for now I just took one of my logs and sit on it while operating, cause yeah, you don't want to use this standing up, or you'll get a major kink in your back real quick!

      Lots of Pros and Cons to weigh out either way, the price of gas vs electricity is a small comparison really, Yes, I think the amount of gas used vs electricity used would be a little cheaper, but, a cheap Gas Powered Log Splitter is going to cost $1,000 or more, and doesn't even come with any gas or oil or hydraulic fluid, I can't even find a used one for less than $750 in good shape in my area, I found this one for under $500 brand new and came with everything needed, was ready to use right out of the box, it only takes 110 for electricity, we'll see how much my first electricity bill is going to be, I've used this one a lot already as my wood pile was building up, so I had quite a bit of wood to split, but I was able to split everything in just a couple of hours which saved me lots of time and wear and tear on the body as well!! Your explanation about clicking it on closed my ticket with Yardmax who was starting to address my issue. Other issue I had with this unit was the limiter. After a couple tries I realized that if you spin it a couple times it actually moves on that pole. Before I was trying to push and slide it down but it was sticking. I'm so happy that you can click it on and do one hand operation. My back hurt while I was doing it incorrectly. Thanks for watching!! That would be another pro of this one, its very easy to operate, just plug it in and go! Just push the one button to start it, and that's it! It is heavy though, the package weighed about 180 lbs, it does move around fairly easily, but it is kind of awkward and might tip easily on uneven ground, but once its setup, its very stable!!

      Yes, I did buy one of these and my wife took right to it. I built a stand with attached table so she can work at waist level. So far this thing has impressed me with its ability to split locust, black walnut, elm, hackberry, oak. If she can handle the round, it can split it.

      @@FatherOfTheParty awesome!! Great to hear!! This one continues to impress me as well, haven’t had a log yet that I can’t split!! And I’m thinking of building some kind of stand for mine too, maybe this spring!! Lol

    I have the 6.5 ton. Its the Knots that made me view these 9ton splitters. Can it do dense branches and it go into a knot without hesitation? They had on sale at Tractor Supply for $389, but with shipping and Tax, came out to be $500+. For that I would rather get a $1000 20ton Splitter...But that seems to much for me and still on the fence with the 9 ton.

      I haven’t had a log I can’t split yet, goes through knots and Y’s no problem, check Lowe’s and Home Depot or Amazon too!

      I just order one through Home Depot with the price of Tractor Supply. Gotta call their online service and get them to price match. You’ll get the cheaper price and free shipping 👍🏻

      @@DW-dy7emI went to my local Lowe's, showed the lady at customer service the listing from TSC and they matched the price with free shipping. I had 2 pages open, one with the splitter at TSC and the other for the splitter on Lowe's website. Made it easy for her to look up the item number and verify that it was the same item.

    you said ONE handed operation...the ones I see advertised from lowes/home depot/tractor supply say TWO handed operation...where did you buy yours? or did you figure a way to make it one hand operation? maybe I missed it in the video.

    • @DW-dy7em
      @DW-dy7em 8 місяців тому

      Yes, this one is just ONE hand operation, I did not modify it or do anything to bypass that to make it ONE Hand Operation, it says in the Manual One Hand Operation, I was actually surprised when I got it, I actually went back to the site where I did buy mine to see how I missed that, but it does say TWO HAND Operation on the website so I was expecting that too, I checked the same listing on Lowes and Home Depot, and they both say the same thing, not sure if they just changed that part or what, I do like the one hand operation better, its nice to have the free hand to catch the logs or just hold them in place, but not sure how to really confirm that now! lol

      It is one-handed operation. I also just got one of these. I picked up a Gorilla 4’ x 20” x 12” platform from HD (on sale at the time). This places the splitter at a better height for your back!
