28:00 I remember one of the biggest issues in undergrad was, it was meant to be a time of learning and discussion but when it came to the final crit, even though you were told it’s a discussion you would find yourself irritating the lectures if you didn’t simply agree. I think it’s a product of time constraint (you’re not the only student so you can’t debate for hours), also perhaps a perceived defensiveness but sometimes you didn’t want to be the type of architect they were encouraging you to be. But sometimes you were wrong, hard to know what to take on and what to reject when you’re looking from the bottom up 😄 Thankfully post-grad was much more of a discussion. And there was basically only constructive criticism.
44:42 true 😄
28:53 Can you imagine anything more ridiculous? Killing your own industry is not a victory.
This was so cool! I'm glad I found this conversation. It has definitely inspired me to think more about the heath sciences in architecture.
Amazing conversation!! Very informative honestly!
He's full of words that don't mean much. I saw a lecture where Zaha, Foster and this guy were in, somewhere in Spain. Zaha and Foster were of course razor sharp in their ideas. This guy spoke from time to time and you literally fell sleep instantly. Doesn't really say anything meaningful!....annoyingly people like this that can talk confusingly can get to the top, architecture is full of these tools. I would hate it if I had to attend his lectures. Theorists that don't do much. I listened to about 20 % of this whilst at work (architect) ,.... switching off before I need to slap myself awake. Watch one of Fosters, or Renzo Piano videos (proper architects) as an antidote to this nonsense, and you will actually learn something.
Hi, Where can I contact the Owner of this Channel?
good video, the volume was very low thanks :)
Such an inspiration!!
Thank you kindly for your work! Could you please help me find the book and author you mentioned at 07:34?
41:27 Yes!
Love the interpretation of Architecture via Piers view. I'm in South Africa, I can't imagine when we will have a deconstructive mindset while we are still taking in that other nation are disposing.
❤❤❤❤
I am American. Piers Taylor is fabulous. I would love to know more about the office he built. It looks🙂🙂💯💯❤️❤️ pretty brilliant.
Very inspiring episode!
❤❤❤❤
He is getting to emergent properties of urban design from a very difficult, obtuse angle. Architects need to learn more about the concept of emergent properties. Cities will surpass the beauty of any city we have today.

Not so good influence on Zaha, hes a bureaucrat and banal, she called him the potato
interesting thoughts. controversial
Could someone reply with the link to this article? I'd love to disseminate these thoughts to my non-podcast listening peers.
A marketing strategy for an architectural style by claiming that the style represents an almost scientific discipline. In fact, the organic masses style (which is what it is after all the jargon is removed) may lend itself to some unique functionality when a patron wants to advertise his building with a dominant, unusual look, and is willing to pay the astronomical cost for it. There are very few successful examples that are highly artistic and people respond positively to them. However, at most, any integrated urban fabric of any city will not comfortably accommodate more than one building of this style. In addition, this style quickly loses its lustre with repetition, especially when it is crammed into an urban environment without any justification, and what is worse is when it is practice without any artistic sense.
I would love to hear Harry Mallgrave on this podcast
101:41 Such a rating is already sort of going on with WELL certification (IWBI)
The Timmy Mallett of architecture!
“I’m an expert in aesthetics” …… weird claim ….
Not sure, I see lots of great building being built….. perhaps he’d over thinking it …..
What is the purpose of arty architectural drawings when modern tech (CG) makes it possible to render what a building will look like with photorealistic accuracy very easily?
Accuracy is often not what you're going for towards Clients throughout the design stage. Lots of things are unclear in the design and a drawing will give the client a framework for fantasizing how it would look like. A realistic render doesn't leave vagueness for imagination.
Please talk about interior design!!
Why do two people having a conversation in a room need to wear headphones?!
Love the stuff you share, what architecture theory and approach I use for thesis abstract on sport centre topic?
He is just not showing the "medical evidence" because it is frail- unfortunately aesthetics is not so simple. The discussion should be on the nature of that evidence. Please just include it here and comment on it.
Thankyou .... Where can I find anything on the architect Hue Casen mentioned.. please
I’m not an architect nor do I go to school for architecture I just enjoy architecture and fascinated w it. Would you recommend?
It is also important to factor in that clients are very often mainly interested in money laundering
Really? Just words and words and more words? No pictures at all? How incredibly boring. Like a rectangle flat building with only straight lines. Why make a video about beauty, when you are not showing it? Not even your classes were this lame.
Interesting talk!!!
Push Architecture forward. It shouldn't become an outdated practice.
If we assume objective beauty comes from evolutionary traits and pattern recognition (EG: plant is good to eat, so it makes us happy to see it -we think its beautiful, mechanism for survival) then it would likely never be universal beauty and vary accross geographic regions? I think beauty can be both objective and subjective in its own way. I would catagories beauty to A : objective 'survival' beauty, biomorphic etc (mainly what was discussed in the interview) and then B : 'spiritual' beauty, this more subjective beauty which clearly exists and is far harder to pinpoint, perhaps more related to culture than to survival mechanisms. Both catagories likely merge and intermingle.
Love the lava lamp in the background, is that a matmos? Great talk btw, its nice to have some great architectural conversations to listen to. Best, Gytis Bickus
Yes, it is a Matmos! And thanks! :)
This conversation was incredibly interesting. I am really looking forward following her research and findings.
Hopefully this type of research gets pushed more, also environmental psychology as it is a more humanistic approach to architecture

Communism...a pathological political ideology, by which NOTHING GOOD ever materialized.
🖐🏻🖐🏻
His attempt to connect aesthetics and politics is malpractice at best. Not mentioning any of the contemporary cultural conditions that produces homogenous architecture or the level of social inequality during antiquity and pre-enlightenment which subsequently birthed modernity, tells you everything you need to know.
people just want interesting buildings. this kind of modern high mindedness that cordens off ourselves from the past and labels us a supior is just wrong. There will be a future after us and they'll probaly label us just as we have labled those before us, and I think it is wrong to condem the architecture of the past just because the rich people who ordered it did bad things. I argue we should appreciate the architecture for the awesome majesty of the design realised by the architect. After all, it wasn't their fault the type of system they had to work in
im here🤚🏻
Very stimulating Bruce, Thanks for your keen diligence with this. You may be interested in a concept called Living Design Process which is greatly inspired by Christopher Alexander, though aims to work from the core premise of how we may design and create health and wholeness through living processes (rather than simply try to extend on Alexander's life work). The subject of LDP is intentionally not limited to architecture (but more broadly in the realm of 'making' and creation processes). Influences in the ongoing development of this concept are: Henri Bortoft, David Bohm, Carol Sanford, Regenesis group, Allan Savory, Gurdjief, Robert Fritz, Possibility Management, Barbara Marx Hubbard, Daniel Schmachtenberger, among many others. Some high level questions are: How conscious are we of where our creative processes are sourced (eg: mechanistic worldview/assembly, growth and evolution, hegemonic "best practices")? How would it go if human processes of design and creation were at one with how the rest of life continually creates itself? Sadly, the key inquisitor of LDP has tragically passed on just last year, however there is a small community of practice who continue to explore these questions and experiment with the idea of Living Design Process in our own realms. Applied phenomenology in design, pattern creation as a reconciliation process and their generative application, working from potential (ie: not problem solving), unfolding/adaptive creation processes, and regenerative development are some of the ideas that intrigue and excite me in this concept. livingdesignprocess.org/about/ oh, and here is a presentation that was given to the BuildingBeauty.org school on the subject of LDP by Dan Palmer here: ua-cam.com/video/C2k35m_Q9xg/v-deo.html
Interesting video!
Thanks!
