Yes this is a good question. No doubt the right tool for the job is always best. Thus I purchased several different felling axes and a splitting axe. But in a pinch my forest axe will do it all. 😁

Saw the Altra Olympus 5 Hike Mid GTX in person and wasn't particularely impressed by the quality and doesn't seem like they would last very long in rocky terrain. The Olympus 6 on the other hand felt like a big leap both in quality and durability. I was very impressed by the fit and finish, hold, softer sole, even the laces felt better. I am currently between the Olympus 6 and Hoka Kaha 2, they're about the same price.

One of our team members alternate between the Olympus 5 Hike Mid GTX for lighter hikes and a more traditional style hiking boot, he hasn't had any issues with durability but with that said, they won't be as durable as a traditional hiking boot especially in rocky terrain. We have most models of Altra's covered amongst the team here and all very happy them!

Hi Chris, I have been wearing Altras as my daily wear for a number of years and for a few long distance hikes. Normally, I would buy any of the their shoes in my normal 9.5 size, but for these boots, would you suggest treating them like a proper hiking boot and going up a size?

I have a 600 single wall mug that I've had for 15 years. What I like to do, is to place it near the store/fire as I cook. It keeps my coffee/tea very warm for the entire cook. As you said, a double wall is not made for this inventive idea. I have a friend that saw me do this little best practice and converted to a single wall Snow Peak the very next day. If you're cooking, use your flame twice. Skillet

I personally, never have any of my wet weather jackets on when around an open fire . Every time I have the smoke from the fire has masked the water repelling properties and the jackets wet out and leak. When this occurs the only way to rectify this is by reapplying the coating ( Nilfix )

The only thing with duct tape on poles is they potentially get wet/dirty/spoiled after bad weather or generally being out there, and you'd have to replace them every so often. For me, I wrap duct tape around the shaft of my backup bic lighter. It's always dry, I always carry it, etc.

The Nalgene and hot water tip is a good one. I resisted for a while thinking a nalgene bottle is a weight penalty as compared to a simpler water bottle, but in the last year or so, I've become a convert.

I got interested in those hand warmers. Have been using hot hands so far, but if there's a viable reusable option, I'd prefer that especially over a multi-day trip. How long is the boil time to recharge these hand warmers? Obviously this would have impacts on fuel consumption. Would it be safe to boil these and then use the same water for cooking/drinking?

    • @xKoMox

I disagree on the grip: good hiking boots and good trail running shoes have the same grip. The former might even have the better grip because they are more easily bendable. Just compare top hiking boots and top trail-running shoes of Salomon: they have similar soles. Also disagree on waterproofing and breathability: if you compare goretex hiking boots and shoes, they have similar waterproofing properties, except that hiking boots are higher. Note that membrane boots and shoes will *not* keep your feet 100% dry: they are good if it is a bit wet, but in worse conditions (walking through wet grass) they both suck. And membrane takes more time to dry.

Isn t it anoying that the white color turn fast into dirty color? What can we do against it? It is misfortunately the only deal breaker at the moment. The black one isn t an option for me because it is heavier

Most people don't mind having a pack that looks a little rugged. A patina that can only be earned from good times spent outdoors! You can give it a scrub when you return from your hike but it's going to collect some slight evidence of use eventually. It's definitely worth considering that the black packs are 150 denier vs 50 denier on most white packs.
