Shooting 35mm Kodak 250D Across Northeast America
Today we're taking a look at some images I shot on my Contax G1 with the 28mm lens, all of which were rolls of re-spooled Kodak 250D Motion Picture film, repurposed for 35mm film shooting. Sadly though a lot of the images had light leaks, but I wanted to share them nonetheless. Enjoy!

My First Ever Roll of Film

This week we're taking a deep dive looking at My First Ever Roll of Film. This roll was a 35mm roll of Kodak Colorplus 200, which I shot through my Canon A1 back in late 2019. Today I wanted to take a look at the images, share a book of the roll, and create some prints with Kyle McDougall on his home printing setup. As well as that, I wanted to remind myself about why I got into Film Photograph...

    As someone who taught photography before you were born, let me compliment your knowledge. Good job explaining the exposure triangle. In the old days iso was asa/din and for many shooters sunny 16 was the rule. We used to have to push 400 to 1600 and deal with the grain for low light. Man have we come a long way...

    I don't understand why you need the extension tube with the macro lens. Does it not give 1:1 magnification? If not, why buy that model when others do. Also, a longer focal length - say 100mm macro would give a longer working distance, allowing easier access to the film holder etc. One major benefit of using a camera to digitise film is the ability to use auto exposure bracketing, then create a HDR image from the frames, this is especially useful when copying transparencies with their high contrast.

    If you had read the manual, and pointed it slightly towards the ground, you would've gotten better results. Now it's partially metering the sky, which will always cause underexposure. I like the video, but now it's not really a fair assessment, as you're just using it wrong. Should be fair to point out.

    There's probably nothing wrong with the light meter... but it's not a matrix meter. If you want to meter for the ground, you need to point it toward the ground. With simple meters like this I tend to point it low enough that the sky isn't in view and then meter the sky to find out how contrasty the scene is. When you meter with both in the scene, you never know if you're gonna get a good average or if the sky is going to flood the photo-cell and giving a reading that will lead to underexposure.

    • @DanielJamesBird
      @DanielJamesBird Місяць тому

      Yep - definitely agreed that it's worthwhile to point this down slightly when metering to avoid getting the sky in the reading. Thanks for the tip!

    Have the V1 and did not find it accurate and did not trust it for Colour film, so I ended up reverting to whipping out a Digital camera and taking a reading from that and transferring settings to the film camera. Shame they never modified the batter compartment where it uses those two screws that are easily stripped with a bit of use.

    Even with cameras with okish built-in averaging meters it's always worth tilting the camera towards the ground/away from the brightest part of the frame, and picking an exposure between that and the one you get pointed directly at your subject. After awhile you get a feel for whether the exposure values seem plausible or not :D

    If you're a pedestrian shooter who just wants a useable image, then this is probably great for you. The meter uses average metering to get the correct exposure but if you wanted finer details to be measured you'd still have to use the phone app for the spot meter unless you spend a fortune on a real spotmeter. I was gonna rip into the lightmeter but i saw it was only $50 on sale right now? Great deal, you should get it.

    I think this shouldn't be sold as the expected experience and results the 'average' first roll a person starting to shoot film can expect. Acquiring a camera with an accurate meter, well stored film, good scans, knowing the process (e.g. not opening the back with the film not being rewound) are just a few of the variables needed to get 'usable' photos; they're not often all going to be there on those first few rolls. Nonetheless everyone should shoot a few rolls of film on an SLR at least once in their lifetime.

    • @DanielJamesBird
      @DanielJamesBird Місяць тому

      Definitely not the experience that everyone gets, but a lot of people can have this experience! My humble advice! Don'tt let viewfinder dictate the framing! You look and then frame to your wants! I find using Medium Format, I am really slow! 18 months for a roll of 220! 24 exp! 22 were meant for big prints! Not barn size! 8" or 10"! Enjoy the trip.

    LONGTIME’blad shooter here; the SQUARE is THE deal. It IS harder to use. Not every subject matter flies. And that- plus all the challenges of FILM proper…makes it worthwhile. FILTERS go a long way with film…with most NOT using them as needed or appropriate…like graduated ND filters as standard for scenics. Film has a limited scene brightness range…needs a lot of “help”. 😅
