Hi, I'm Justin! 👋🧔♂️
I set out to show that competency-based education (CBE) is a great way to learn and save money. I completed two master's degrees at Western Governors University and CBE doctoral coursework at South College. Both journeys are documented on this channel. I've dedicated this space to sharing my story and tips on navigating the CBE path.

Navigating Work with Advanced Degrees: Some Struggles and Realities
Hi all! I wanted to share a video on a topic that's been on my mind. Even though I've been in my current line of work since 2011 while going to school as a lifelong learner, I’ve noticed something tricky to navigate. As I’ve gained more knowledge and research skills, it’s become harder to integrate into certain work environments. Part of this might come from research training to problem-solve, evaluate, and refine processes, which can be challenging for others who prefer sticking to familiar methods. Have you had a similar experience?

Congratulations 🎊
I've been exploring the program at South College, and I'm also curious about the doctorate program at the American College of Education. Have you had a chance to look into it? I've been in K-12 education for 24 years, starting as a classroom teacher, then moving to a district-level position, and I've been an administrator for the last eight years. I completed my undergraduate program and first graduate degrees at a state school and recently earned a master's from Western Governors University (WGU). While I appreciate the competency-based education (CBE) approach, I'm not sure about the economic feasibility of pursuing a doctorate with this model if it takes an extended period of time.
Hello, the video is useful. Thank you for sharing the experience. Question: Do you know alternative universities that accept students from outside America at the same speed of obtaining a degree?
I def got burnt in my MBA program. Before I was like "I’m going to join the DBA program after I get my MBA" Now - "…heck no, I am done. No more schooling…" Because it’s alot of work. Like you said, some days you just blow through an assignment, other days, you struggle. For me - sometimes I can’t even get myself to write just 1 subheading (not even a page) in a report lol
Navigating workplace dynamics as a problem-solver often feels like walking a tightrope-you see where things can improve, but convincing others to take that step is another story. That’s one reason I went back to school to focus on organizational leadership, stepping into roles where my skills and perspective could drive change more effectively. I’ve learned that while I thrive on challenges, many colleagues value stability and simplicity, especially when their priorities lie outside of work-on family, hobbies, or personal goals. In those cases, the best approach is often to meet them where they are. By presenting a nearly complete solution, along with clear plans to address potential issues, I make it easier for others to see the benefits of change without feeling disrupted. In many workplaces, especially those resistant to change, demonstrating results before proposing new methods is more effective. Ultimately, balancing personal drive with respect for others’ comfort levels ensures that necessary changes can take root without overwhelming those who prefer stable, consistent routines. It’s a delicate dance-earning trust while advancing ideas-but when done thoughtfully, even the most resistant environments can begin to shift, creating meaningful progress for everyone involved.
I really appreciate that response and perspective, thanks for sharing Logan! I can definitely sense the "delicate dance" you mentioned. The word trust stands out to me, and I think it's quite fitting in the workplace environment-building trust to share new ideas, unique ideas, out-of-the-box ideas-but also not imposing them as "the solution." Just offering ideas to consider and remaining open to others' ideas and responses.
Congrats Justin!
I hope you are doing well by now, but I was waiting for you to indicate your master's degree about...?!. But, thank you for sharing, and congratulations
I needed to hear this. I’ve always wanted to get multiple degrees and certifications just because so many things interested me but I always thought it was just unnecessary and maybe even impossible and that I’ll just have to choose one. But now I’m going to try to achieve my strive for knowledge with hopefully money not holding me back
I am a US citizen that teaches abroad, and have a physical address that I use to receive mail in the US. I spoke to them today via chat, and they said I can't apply if I'm not living in the USA, but some people in Canada can. I find that to be the dumbest thing I've ever heard for an online program with no physical location that an American living abroad can't attend an online college.
I really want to apply to wgu from india but can I??
Hi. I’m getting ready to start this Masters and have to have it finished before a job. I start on July 1. Education Technology and Instructional Design. Do you recommend any video series’s or webinars or anything to prime me before Dec. 1?
Congratulations Justin 🎉 I am happy that your hard work is paying off. I hope that this helps you in your personal and professional life. Wishing you Godspeed in all of your future endeavors
That' a very kind message, thank you!
Hello, I am from Colombia and I am waiting for admission decision, like 4 days ago 😅, how long took you to be accepted? Thanks!
Thanks for this!!
Thanks for sharing your perspective!
Congratulations!!!
You bought into a system that was designed for you to fail . It’s amazing that you probably spent 200-300k on a degree that doesn’t even teach you work ethic, common sense , or critical thinking skills. In my experience , people who think of themselves as overeducated need to find some humility. If you were so darn smart and qualified to perform a task, why are we having issues finding a job? It’s because the job you’re seeking gives no real value to the world. I also noticed you specialize in teaching and researching . What actual experience could you have at your age to teach someone a skill? ….. Try mastering the skill before you try to teach it !!!
Ya he is just another arrogant clown.
Oh brother, you haven't even watch this channel. I'm nearly 40 and been in my current line of work since 2011.
@@lifebyjustin There has been a consisted decline in the quality of education during these years.... coincidence? Childless 40 year olds should never be take seriously.
The problem isn’t that you’re over educated, it’s that you’re under experienced with way too much opinion about how things should be done. I’ve managed hundreds of people in my life, and I will take a person with no degree or a lower degree but with excellent and relevant experience over somebody with a doctorate any day. I don’t need someone who’s a professional test, taker and paper writer, I need someone who could do the damn job and then teach other people how to do it too.
I get that experience matters. In my situation, I've been in my line of work since 2011, and my education has given the research experience to complement the skills.
@@lifebyjustin then in my opinion that makes you atypical for people with doctorate because a lot of them come in with this air of arrogance because they think that the education is more important than the experience. So if you have learned to value both and you have both, then you’re doing very well.
@@1234jajadingdong Yeah, it's possible for some people to have an air of arrogance if they think their education surpasses experience. Similarly, to me, some leaders can also come across as arrogant simply because of their leadership role.
Is south college a good school? I am considering start my DBA
I know that lamp in the back...
Lol, I think it's one of those basic lamps everyone has from Ikea.
lamp? all i see is a bikini!
@@lifebyjustin That's from some visual ambiguity
Were you also working while completing your degree?
I followed your path to WGU and now starting the Ed.D November 1st, what's crazy is that I am realizing a lot of leaders don't have the training or background. If the experience doesn't match the credentials and role it's very challenging to be over educated. People just want you to play your role or they find it overwhelming.
I love hearing about other people's educational paths, thank you for sharing! You're starting a new path soon. Being on the other side of the Ed.S., I can say I'm glad I chose South College. I agree, a misalignment between education and a role can be tough without strong, open-minded, strengths-focused leaders and team members. I've run into this throughout my career, both good and bad.
Keep doing YOU Justin........ you're rocking it!!!
Well that comment put a smile on my face from ear to ear, thank you Paula!
Congrats bud.
Hi. Are you talking about Western Global University or Western Governors University?
Western Governors University (it's in the video's title)
Congratulations to you!
Congratulations, Justin! I searched for the Ed.S. programs on the website but could not locate them. Could you please share the link to the page if you have it?
I’ve added a link to the Ed.S. description from the latest South College catalog to my video description!
CONGRATS JUSTIN!!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉
Hampton University (HBCU) has a 2 year expedited program that you could transfer this into and be done quite quickly.
That’s good to know-thanks for sharing! I learn a lot from comments like yours. Actually, I discovered South College through a commenter.
Really? I’ll have to look at it. It’s not far from me so that’s good to know. I’m looking at the Ed. S as well.
Wow this is so exciting! Congratulations!
Congratulations😅 🎉🍾🎈
Congratulations 🎉😇, I'm glad you were able to receive something for all your hard work 👍
Congratulations Justin! 🧑🏼🎓 I just finished my last EdD required class at Purdue University Global and start my four Applied Research Project courses in 2 weeks…. The plan is to be done, ARP presented & approved, and degreed by end of July 😃.
That's awesome, good for you Frank!
This is great omg! 💙
Congrats Justin. I'm finishing up class #7 within the next week.
Congrats! I know you printed it but will they send you a Diploma in the mail soon?
Thank you! The email I received on September 5th from the registrar said, "Your EdS degree has been conferred. You will receive an email notification from Parchment within the next few days for electronic diploma delivery. A hard copy usually arrives in the mail within 2-3 weeks."
@@lifebyjustin yay!!!
congratulations to you!!!
Congratulations on your degree, Justin! 🎉 This was a great video for a Sunday evening.
Just an update for those interested! South College now has a Ed.s on the Ed.D path! in other words, last month they added the Ed.s within CBE and once you get the Ed.s (complete the 8 courses) , then you can signup for the Ed.D (2 additional courses) according to the admissions officer that I spoke with. Just sharing!
Thanks for sharing Mykel! I’ll pin your comment for others. I was one of the first to receive an EdS degree, which started September 1st, 2024. I got the digital parchment yesterday (September 6th) after completing the graduation process.
awesome! Are the courses setup in modules? How long should one course take if I dedicate 8-10 hrs week? Suggestions
@@mykelwilliams227I get this type of question a lot. My suggestion is to find my video titled "Number of Assignments at a Doctoral Level..." and read the pinned comment where I detail all my experiences with the assignments.
Question, would you give yourself the MEd title for these degrees or just the Instructional Design degree?
look at this fruit lol
Hi Justin, I hope you receive this message. My question is about claiming tuition fees from these online US universities with the CRA. Please can you explain the process for this? Do you need to fill out the TL11A or TL11D form? Thanks in advance for your help!
I’m not the best person to ask about this; I usually just hand everything over to an accountant! Though, my understanding is that for claiming tuition fees from US universities with the CRA, you generally need to use the TL11A form (I think). This form is for tuition fees paid to universities outside Canada. I would just call a Tax Professional's office to ask that question and confirm. And the 1098-T form you receive from South College is useful for your records but is not directly used for CRA claims. I can’t help much beyond that!
Hey Justin! I’ve been following your progress for a while and actually just completed my masters through wgu not long ago. How long would you say it took you per course at south college? I am a full time teacher as well but am looking at the dba program as I am a business Ed teacher! Thanks for all your content you’re part of the reason I chose wgu and am looking at south. Thanks!
Thanks for the comment! I was able to complete about one or two assignments a day at my productivity peak. I would say that's quite ambitious though. Generally, there are about 20 assignments per course, and some assignments take longer (e.g., a literature review or research paper). But usually, the assignments are stacked so that you build up to a larger assignment. Based on that, you can do a rough estimate of how long it took me to complete a course. South College CBE doctorates are a lot of work, but many dedicated learners manage it while working full-time. I worked part-time, so my experience might be different from others. I wrote an extensive comment on my own video called "Number of Assignments at a Doctoral Level (South College) vs. Masters (WGU)" which is pinned at the top of that video. I walk through my experience with doing the assignments. You can check that out for more details. Hope that helps a bit! And thanks for watching!
WGU and similar on-line fast track colleges are perceived by many employers as diploma mills that don't offer much underlying real knowledge or skills to back up their fancy engraved receipts (diplomas). That view may not be correct, but to the prospective employer, perception is reality. Don't even bother to try to change their perceptions.
Yet many people are getting employed and salary boosts due to them….including myself 😊
I got a raise as soon as I finished, my portfolio looks good and I am understanding my work environment way better. For experienced professionals CBE like wgu is a great option.
For 3 years of my life I was demon oppressed. Nothing could get it out until Jesus Christ removed multiple demons from me. It’s people reading this that could be dealing with demonic oppression and things that they know aren’t natural . Jesus Christ is the way and the healer and the fixer of all our life. Jesus gives Life. I called out to other gods and nothing took it away until I called out to Jesus and he gave me an encounter with Him and His Spirit. He is the only way. I see demons casted out of people, the sick healed, and now the LORD has blessed me to start doing deliverances. Honestly, its real even if we want to believe it or not. God bless you all if any of you are going through anything look up the RROC deliverances with Richard Lorenzo Jr and he does mass dileverances over youtube on thursdays. You will feel the Holy Spirit! Repent, it will set you free. Jesus is real and the Son of God, Son of man, and God the Son! Hallelujah and God Bless you all in Jesus name. If your wondering why theres still no peace as far as you go and as high as you seek its because the peace and fulfillment your looking for only comes from God! We’re lucky because that peace we’re looking for God wants to give to us! And He given His Word to us to show you how to get to Him and receive His peace. And that peace is Jesus Christ. God bless you all and I pray I can inspire some faith in one of you today and show you the God who leads us out of brokenness and darkness! Amen!
Good to see you again, Justin.
Wow your cat is incrediblely magestic
Thank you for your update! Hope you are well. Interesting point regarding pursuing a CBE Doctorate degree in specific. It made me realize that I probably kept from burning out is the fact that in my degree program we can’t take more than 3 classes per semester, and still at that it feels overwhelming sometimes. I am very interested in your journey would love it if you shared on your other classes, I too have other programs I’m interested in besides my own, my dream is to do a history masters😂
Maria! Great to see your name and face. CBE is intense, but luckily, I didn't experience burnout. I was on a roll and close to the dissertation! Though, life events happened, and there wasn't an option for a Leave of Absence (LoA). The school only offered program withdrawals with the option to return. I wish they offered LoA, but I understand why they don't. Three courses at a time sounds like a good pace for you. When I took two CBE courses at once, it felt like a lot, so I imagine multiple courses keep your mind very busy. A history master's would be interesting. I'd love to study something creative again, like an MFA. Who knows what the future holds right
Just finished my masters and I totally agree. You can’t teach everything but should be taught basic principles. Well then you can grow into your own style.
I appreciate your videos. Thanks for sharing.
