This channel has my hobbies of model building in plastic, paper, stick and tissue, kits, scratch, painting etc. Mostly aircraft with lots of drag and rigging! It may also have some of my other hobby...trying to save money on car repair by "doing it myself" so I can spend that money on more paper, balsa and plastic...Enjoy!
Me-410 Paper Card Model Part 18: Panel Lines and Simple Demo
Here we finished filling, puttying and sanding and start adding back our panel lines. I ended up simply using a mechanical pencil and straight edge. With a few passes, it actually embosses the paper pretty well. We'll see how it looks under a coat of paint later!

Here I try and show the progression from the last video. I added some more putty all around, let it dry and now we sand away. Then I show what it looks like after another coat of primer. Just keep plugging away until you are satisfied!

Airfix Dornier Do-217 J-1 Plastic Model in 1/72nd Scale

Needed a tiny break from the paper Me-410 so I whipped this one up for nostalgia's sake. It's plastic, but I do those too! Always loved the Dornier bombers and this was for a Roy Cross Tribute build over on Hyper Scale. He was an amazing artist who made much of the Airfix box art I fell in love with as a lad. Thank you, Mr. Cross. Blue Skies!

Dan, thanks for the tip it's awesome filling and priming the card model. Can't wait to see end result.
It looks awesome Dan!!! in the morning Its great seeing this masterclass in modeling, in my feed!!!! I can NOT wait to see you paint it, and detaile it furthur!!!!
Nice build😁👍👍
Thank you, LH. This kit is one I've wanted for many years. It was really fun to put together and tweak. I hope to show more plastic in the future. Thanks for commenting too. -Dan
I have built plastics for years , really like these papercard models. They make a person "think". Thanks for sharing this!
PS! Thanks for commenting. I still love plastic models too and tend to build both back and forth. There is something neat about the paper models, though. I think it's especially nice for WWI era machines. Anyway, thanks for looking and commenting. If you are in the US, I hope the 4th of July is going great! -Dan
Did you put rtv on the thermostat housing or did you just put the gasket by itself?
Gasket by itself! Worked for me...Good luck. -Dan
Good to see you still at it!
Thanks, Neil. It's a long haul and filling etc. takes time but I hope to start painting soon! Thanks for the support...-Dan
I love your videos too!!!!!!! lol! I love how you two acctually show the video process not just slideshows
@@fishbarbeque8540 thanks good buddy! More to come soon with Dan one day in the future. Dan is showing me how to build it so I can do mine at a smaller scale. Cheers.
I'm so glad that somebody is showing filling and sanding paper model. I've been doing it for quite a while, although not the using the same products. Instead of plastic putty, I use sandable wood putty. For one thing it's cheaper, and generally less toxic being more akin to thickened wood glue. Second, I noticed some paper pilling in some sanding. Rather than prime the model, I harden the paper by brushing on some nail polish, letting it soak in and dry. A note on the nail polish, while clear is ideal, since one is painting over anyway anything from a store's clearance shelves will do for the most part. I also do this if I add putty to the general area around the fill so as not to pill edges when sanding. I also put extra cardstock behind the area or allow for larger internal tabs just in case I sand through so as to not end up with a physical hole. This is particularly the case in situations where small rounded shapes are needed. Of course this only works on paper models you are going to paint over anyway and finish much like a standard plastic kit. It does improve rounded shapes and some of the "egg crating" that can occur when ribs show through.
Z: Thanks for this comment and the great ideas! I too was thinking why not use wood putty but sort of forgot about it and just used what I had. You make a great point. Perhaps next time...Thanks again... -Dan
Audio levels are TOO low.
Thanks, David. I'll try to make things louder... -Dan
WONDERFULL!!!!!! 4:35 YOUR RIGHT ABOUT THAT! Even when you see the concord, xb-70, etc the skin is wrincled around the curved edges.
yup...this is why I want to make it look nice in this scale, but a few foibles will be tolerated! 😅 Thanks for looking and commenting. -Dan
OMG!!!! this is amzing!!! Im working on a 1:32 scale Sr-71 and this channel is INVALUABLE!!!
Let's hope it all turns out! It'll take a while, but I hope to plug away fairly regularly. SR-71 sounds amazing! -Dan
I still have the G9+HM half of the decals and the solid gun nose in my spare bits box from when I built that kit as the bomber version way back in the late 70's! thoroughly echo your words about the late Roy Cross, I'm building a F 80 shooting star from a 1973 box as a tribute to him myself, as I've always said, I feel like Roy personally sold me many kits due to his fantastic artwork.
I so agree, Phil. There are so many boxes I remember looking at just wishing I had the money to buy. His artwork was really special. I may build the Lancaster next which would go along well with the Dornier. We'll see! Thanks for subscribing and commenting. Much appreciated. -Dan
INSANEEEEEEE Take your sweet time Dan! we are patient learners 😁 THis is amazing craftsmanship, and I can't wait to see!!!!! the canopy looks great tooo, Btw, what putty will you be using? Regardless love this channel!!!! Love how you explain everything.
Hello Fish! I'm glad you like it. I will be using plain ol' Tamiya putty for plastic models. Sanding gently etc. seems to work just fine. We'll see!! Thanks again for looking and commenting and sticking around. -Dan
Hey great to see you again Dan, as always, I enjoy your experience on these models. I am almost encouraged to build one who knows a bomber ha ha, Do you use regular plastic putty? If possible show us how to prime these work of art. :) God bless.
Thanks, Roland. I will do my best. Basically, I treat it like a plastic model and use normal putty for plastic models and gentle sanding. After multiple applications, it should smooth out nicely. We'll see! Thank you for commenting and hanging around long enough to see this one through. It's a cool model. -Dan
@@dansmith7617 Thanks for the tip :) Most definetly it is a cool model.
That "round" tool is so nice 👍 what is it
Hi Fish...it's called a dabbing tool (I think). It comes with a bunch of others of various sizes and a large block with round indents. I think it can form bit of metal etc. but it's great for these paper models. -Dan
Amazing, I am OFFICIALLY a subscriber for life.
YOUR AMAZING!!! your the only one making paper model building like this! Thank you SO much for not just doing a slideshow!!!
As soon as I saw it was not just a slide show (which Is SO tired!!) I subscribed liked and commented!!!!! Cant wait to see what you do next!
That's awesome, FBBQ! Thank you very much. I'm working on this one and will be posting more videos soon. Work (real life) has finally eased up a bit! I appreciate the sub... -Dan
Thank you.
hello
Get the plastic kit instead!😉
Had a video show up in my feed from the guy with the manila folder 777. Sped up build of the engines from printing to finish. Worth the watch.
finally! everyone!!...a new video from Dan just dropped!
Thanks, Neil. Life has just been very busy! 😅
Well it's obvious, all you have to do is fold---er--put this in at-- uh--find the --- ?!?!?!? You are correct there is NO way the parts were designed to fit, so modlers creed "if it dosnt fit cut, sand, bend til it does. 😄. p.s. great recovery.

Hello, a question. Do you have the kit for that plane because a while ago I saw that plane in a forum that was downloadable for free but unfortunately I was late to download that plane to see if you could share that kit with me please?😢😢😢
Dan, amazing work. 1/72???
Thank you! It's 1/33rd so much bigger. Still, it's sort of a small machine. It really turned out nicely, I must say. Looks great on the shelf! Thank you so much for looking and commenting...-Dan
Thank you for the tips. I’m learning much here. Never have built a paper model yet.
Thank YOU for looking and commenting, Pegasus. They are lots of fun and you can get them for rather inexpensive prices. Have a shot at one. Practice and it will get better too! -Dan
Something to use as "clamps" on seams. Bobby Pins 😜 They don't work in every instance but they are cheap
That's a great idea. Gotta try that! I do like UA-cam and the comments...😁 -Dan
Most impressive Dan, Love how's coming along. Thanks for the pointers, specially taking your time, and dry fitting should do the trick. God bless.
Thanks, Roland. Test fitting is essential but this one has had very little trouble! I'm pleased. Thanks for looking and commenting and right back at you...-Dan

Thanks, Edward...too much other stuff in the fire. But I intend to keep moving on this one. I really like it. As usual, thanks for looking and commenting. -Dan

Maly Modelarz?
Hi Normg...this one is from Fly Model. I've heard night mares about the Maly example...I think I'm getting off easy! -Dan
@dansmith7617 ... I hear ya ... lol. But some Maly models are actually quite decent, i've done the Grumman Wildcat and the F16 and found both a pleasure to build, except on the F16 I had to slightly adjust one fuselage section in front of the cockpit because it was bent down too much. But otherwise it was great. But most of the older ones, mamma mia... lol
@@normg2242I guess that's what I assumed. Early can be built and well! But they are above my pay grade. This current model is really going so well, I'm almost wondering if it wasn't computer drawn but I don't think so. It's a nice one! -Dan
Hi Dan, that's my Achilles tendon, ha ha... working the frames and gluing. Congrats, and God bless.
Frames can be a real pain. I do find that the Tacky Glue seems to work really well for lots of stuff. I do love it for my paper models, that's for sure. Thanks for looking and commenting! -Dan
Hello Dan, it´s just coming along wonderful. And yes, I've heard that T glue is the best for these kits, thank you for the eye candy.
Nice! now I can really see what the canopy is like. Cheers.
Fiddly bits.😊
Ahhh...they make the model! -Dan
Dan, this morning l saw a video on hole punching for paper modeling. Using biopsy punches. Available in sizes from 1.5mm to 10mm.
Sweet! Those would certainly work great. I bet I can find some at my job (teach at a college in a bio dept.)! -Dan
Be sure to return your wife’s Tupperware Dan! The Me 410 looks great! Tim
Thanks so much, Tim...she didn't even know I borrowed it. Now it's nice and shiny! I trust you are doing well. Some WWI stuff coming back soon. -Dan
@@dansmith7617 But did she get the Tupperware at a Tupperware party? 🙄 My aunt worked for them in the 50s and 60s. They were actually the sellers of Lego in the US for awhile.
Kitty fur? Try two Golden Retrievers. Plus two Siamese. At least they aren't Persians. Watched a video from a channel called Paper modeling. A Scratcbuilt handrawn KTM1085 sportbike. With engine internals. Amazing work.
Have you seen the paper engines? Those that function on air are simply breath taking (no pun intended)! Yes...all I need are some horses and a gerbil and I'll be all set. I appreciate the views and comments. Have a great week... -Dan
@@dansmith7617 Yes, I've seen some of the paper air engines. What was really incredible about the video mentioned was the engine/transmission being built up in layers. All hand drawn and fitting together.
A wonderfully done video! Modeling in any medium is and should be an art form.
MrS: Much appreciate the views and comments. These are sure fun to make and turning them into art is part of the fun! Cheers -Dan
Awesome work, and love the seatbelt work.
Thanks! I like making them and then tape really looks pretty nice. Thanks for viewing and making a comment. I hope the rest won't disappoint! -Dan
This shows the absolute value of scanning the sheets that come in published kits. I know scanning opens up the whole copyright infringement issue. But I view it the same as if you purchase a music CD and copy it onto your computer for ipod or mp3 player use. The issue with the blisters not resting on the drum surface most likely comes from a curved surface (the blister) trying to sit on the flat curved outside of the gun barrel mounts. Probably a good idea to fit everything prior to assembling if possible.
Do you decide to paint all cockpit? How do you want to make gauges?
MM! This time I'm going to cut out paper gauges from some other paper models and glue them in place with a little drop of shiny clear "glue" and see how this looks. Sort of an experiment. Thanks for looking and commenting... -Dan
Second! This is really good! looking at how you put the pedals together and how the barbets are added is wonderful. better believe that I am taking notes. loving this build. This will help me when it is time to build mine. Cheers and one love.
Thanks, Neil! Second of probably only two! 🤣🤣 I just finished the barbettes so I'll try and post a movie about that soon. And you should know that we had our bi-monthly virtual hour-long paper card meeting on google and your name/channel came up! Folks really like your stuff and are enjoying the recent 1/100th stuff too. Keep it up! -Dan
@dansmith7617 awesome. We definitely need to do a dual interview on builds later this year and post. I would love to introduce my subscribers to your channel. Honestly like you flow. Cheers.
First! When assembling the drum that goes through the fuselage. After glueing in the end cap on one side insert an inner skin that is the length of the drum minus the thickness of both end caps. This gives a shoulder for the second end cap to butt up against. That small drill. Looks like it is from those sets of small drills that get sold on ebay
Correct! I got those bits and they work great for this little stuff. I just got the barbettes finished and I'll be posting that soon. They are not perfect, but do look kind of cool. I'll know how to make them even better if there is a second 410 someday! Thanks for looking as usual and commenting as well. -Dan P.S. "First" of probably only two! You should get a prize, though... 😂
I'm not complaining but your audio level has been really low of late. Wouldn't it be easier to put in the dtails such as the stringers etc as you build ip the individual fuselage sections. I know if l was doing it the surface I'm attaching things to would lway wind up in the shadows 😖
Yes it would! I wasn't sure how to add the interior when everything else was built so I did things later. Also, I do find that it's easier to locate things in a way that they don't interfere when you add details after assembly. For example, the side shelves in the front cockpit needed to fit around some forward formers and be lined up. I figured that would have been harder doing it before the skins were on. Of course, this only works since the cockpit is rather large too! Audio hasn't changed and is really loud on my end. In fact, I was going to make it quieter! Thanks for the suggestion and thanks for looking and commenting. -Dan
@@dansmith7617 Lately to hear your audio l have run the volume all the way up. Now l suppose that could be my tablet. As to the build process. There is almost always more than one way to do a job. The exceptions are jobs that require a very specific sequence of operations.
i like the way you build. yes I watch all the way thru 😀
Thanks, Tony. These are really fun to make. I will be posting more soon. Thanks for looking and commenting. -Dan
Beautiful Model, Dan. Have you posted a build log anywhere?
Hi Gene...here is a build log on a neat WWI site: forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=12230.0 I hope you can see it. It's an amazingly well-designed model! -Dan
I have admired NinetythirdLiberator's builds for years!!! Just "realized" that is you. DUH. Gene K
Yup..one in the same. Thank you! The name is a reference to my dad's bomb group in WWII. -Dan@@GeneKoro
Fascinating! Back in the 1980's I had a paper model of an Me-262, I believe I got it from Germany. Anyway, I never built it, too intimidating for me compared to more familiar plastic kits. Lost it over the years, might have to try one now that I'm 67 and have more patience! Where does one find these paper kits? Also...was there ever a part 11 for the Dornier 335 to show the final outcome? Surely you gave it a better paint job--as an airbrush artist of 42+ years, I would definitely be doing better, more realistic paint jobs if I were to try building paper models...that's just me. Thanks for showing!
Thanks for commenting on this old build! It actually floundered and was crushed while cleaning the garage so it was never finished...sadly. You can get this one and many others as digital downloads (you need to provide your own paper card stock) at a place called Ecardmodels! ecardmodels.com/ The one I'm working on now is an Me-410 and I will be repainting it so take a look for that one in my videos. Thanks for looking and commenting. -Dan
