Walking a 12 minute mile is phenomenal. My fast pace is just below 15 and to go any faster I have to jog. I'm 5'10" and you're 6'1" so maybe it is a stride thing... still, that's impressive. Obviously you prepared well because your AT thru-hike was a success, so congrats on that! I started last year to prepare for a Grand Canyon backcountry trip and took a similar approach to your's, which was successful as well. I'm going to do AT from Springer to NC in April '25. Thanks for taking the extra time to take videos during the hike and post them. Very helpful.
Hey, no problem. It took a while to work up to doing 12 minute miles for multiple miles, but it is achievable. Realistically, it’s not really necessary to move that fast. It just helps build up cardio. You won’t need or want to move that fast on the AT. It’s all about perseverance rather than speed. Congratulations on getting your attempt planned, and I wish you all the luck. Let me know if you Vlog it. I’ll follow along.
At 10:34 and many times before there is a bird singing and soon after you ask what kind of bird that is. Hope I'm not answering the wrong question but if you're asking about the one that sings at 10:34 and earlier, it's an Eastern Wood-Pewee.
Thanks. That was what I was wondering. You’ll hear it a lot on the trail.
You talk about fearmongering in this video. And boy, is there a lot of it online in terms of what critters to be paranoid about on the AT -- human and non-human. Most of it strikes me as blather from people taught to fear life. But the only critter that will have me wary on the trail is the tick. Now that's a critter that can truly harm you if you're unprepared or just unlucky.
You’re exactly right. Treat your clothes regularly with permethrin (including your hat and socks) and check yourself every evening. I never pulled the first tick off of me.
@ That’s great to hear you never had one on you. The videos give the impression that you waited until the coldest months were over before you started to treat your clothes and gear. Is that correct?
Yes. Never saw ticks until it got warm
Amazing to see you hike through the seasons. First it was just you out there. Then the birds decided to join you in the mornings. Now the flowers and birds are hiking with you all day. I love it.
Yeah. It’s cool to hike through the seasons
Oh, look, I'm in someone else's video! Haha. That's me at 5:42, in the orange puffy under the umbrella. 😆 I believe I passed you all going the other way on your second day. I was hiking from Sloan Bridge to Burrell's Ford. I definitely remember passing Scott and Stick.
Yes I think you did. I remember seeing you.
I see a lot of white blazes along the way as you hike, but I hope there are a lot more than are caught on camera, because some of those rocky, scrambly passages didn't always look clear on camera in terms of which way the trail was going.
There are, but you do have to really look for them in some of the rocky areas. That’s where the FarOut app helps.
Hey buddy , Randy Wilson here, wow, 8 days? GO, take care
8 days???? Not sure what you mean Randy???
Glad to see a new video back on trail.
It’s good to be back out there! Thanks.
I want to hike with these guys! Well, and with Bandit, of course.
Hahaha. Thanks. Maybe we can one day.
I live in the heart of NYC, but I just heard a loud whip-poor-will sing out in the park across the street. Then I turn on this video and Bandit straight away mentions hearing whip-poor-wills!
Hahaha. No doubt that you will hear them on the trail…..but in NYC!!???
Chuck, I’m in the market for a new wireless mic system for my iPhone. Do you use a wireless mic? If so, what system do you use?
I used a cheap wireless mic set from Amazon. It worked very well. I did have to buy the “Dead Cat” wind guard separately. The Mike I used was the Boya wireless Lavalier mic for iPhone 15. It’s only $40 and I received several comments on how good it sounded in the wind.
@ thank you, sir.
I just looked at my purchase. The description states for Android USBC, but if you have the iPhone 15 or 16 pro, they use USBC and the mic works fine with it.
@@ChuckHowell-Outdoors I settled on the Boya Mini for $45.00.
I think you’ll be happy with it.
I think I'd be willing to pay more for dehydrated backpacker meals, so it's a bummer to hear they're often hard to find at resupply points.
They are available at most spots, but not all. You will eventually get tired of them though.
@ Appreciate your feedback and I’m loving “coming along the trail behind you” by following your videos a few months late.
Nice to see the dynamic duo together again! 👍
It’s always good to be back on trail with my favorite hiking buddy!
I bet it felt good to be back on the trail. Everyone I've watched got flooded out. Crazy.
It was definitely a wet weekend. Those who plodded on were met with a swollen river blocking the trail
I’ve had a similar rainy, cold experience on the Foothills trail and probably will again at the end of this month. I’m planning on doing Oconee to Bad Creek. Chuck, you and a few others had inspired me to attempt the Appalachian Trail in 2025 but I know long sections are closed due to hurricane helene. That’s why I was surprised to hear you talking to those folks who were going to do it anyway. So they think doing all those flip flops is still feasible? Certainly it will be at least a year before those damaged sections are repaired. If you can let me know what their plan is.
I didn’t hear all of the plans. Most of the trail that will open is open. There will be sections that they will have to be shuttled around, but the trip is still feasible. Shuttles are inevitable anyway, and they will miss some in NC, but after NC they should be fine.
Watching you and thinking about a future thru-hike. I'd do so many things the way you do, but I think I'd want a hat that shades more of my face and neck. You weren't concerned about that?
As you watch more of my videos, you will see that I actually got one for the same reasons. It actually became a bit cumbersome, especially in the rain. There weren’t so many exposed areas that the sun rarely ever became a problem.
So great to see you again!! Bluegrass too!!!❤
Thanks. It’s good to be back out there.
Great to see you guys hiking again, sorry it didn’t turn out so great. You got to spend some time with friends and that’s a win any day!
Any day spent with family and friends is a good day. Thanks😄
Awesome video and seeing many of the 2024 class in the video!
Thanks! Good to meet some for the first time, and good to reconnect with others!
So great to see you and Bluegrass got to go, but sorry about the weather. Happy New Year!😊❤
Yeah, the weather was rough, but it was still a great hike!
So glad to hear from you guys again. Glad you got to spend time with your sons. Try not to be so long between post, we got used to watching you guys every night. Be blessed, enjoyed hearing from you again!!
I’ll try to post more often. Hopefully at least once a week. I had to spend some time healing my leg and working through a bit of post hike depression.
So good to see you again!
Thanks. It felt good to be back out there.
It’s great to see Bandit back on trail !
Thanks. Good to be back out there.
6:37 Fresh Grounds seems like a great guy. Ramdino gives off bad vibes. Hope I’m wrong. Michael and Leo, Mama Bear. I watched them. I guess Waffle wasn’t there.
No. Didn’t see waffles. And Ramdino is really a great guy. If it came across poorly, it was due to my camera work.
Good to see you out on trail again Chuck! Even tho you had the wet weather, you got to see some friends on trail. Take care.
Thanks, it was a great weekend despite the weather!
Well, this was the first time my sleeping bag wetted out on the inside as well as the outside. It makes me feel better about my new zpacks tent that it happened to you for the first time out here too. We were all in this together. It was great to meet you, thanks for coming out and many happy trails ahead!
Yeah. I love my Duplex. I really do think that the air was so saturated that it couldn’t be helped. I went through many hard rain showers and never had any problem. My quilt was the same way. That was an anomaly and definitely not the norm. Good talking with you.
Bluegrass and Bandit back on trail. It's a good day. 😊
Hahaha. Thanks. Even with the bad weather, it was a good day!!
@@ChuckHowell-Outdoors No doubt!
Your legs must be feeling a lot better. Hike safe.
Thanks Brian. Legs aren’t quite 100% but getting there.
@ last time I saw you, 9 holes was a challenge. Glad to see you put there.
Much better!! Not 100%, but better.
Happy New Year guys! We met Ramdino in front of Tom Levardi's house on his sobo section hike !😊Happy Trails from the "Ottawa Way Cafe " BACON WRAP 😊
Hi Bacon Wrap!! Good to hear from you!!!!. I had many email exchanges with Ramdino, but it was good to finally meet him on person. Take care!
Good to see you!
Thank you!
Great hanging out with you guys
Thanks Master Splinter. Good seeing you again.
Happy to see you and Bluegrass back on the trail. Wishing you a happy, healthy year.
Thanks. I wish you the same. It was good to be back out there. My knee prevented me from doing it for a while, but it’s getting better every day.
So glad to see you again! We've had Chuck withdrawal symtoms since you completed the AT. Hope you can do more hikes....maybe in better weather.
I’m planning a few hikes this year. Likely solo in some of them. And yeah, hopefully in better weather.
We enjoyed meeting you and Bluegrass...it was a tad bit soggy out there but fun none the less. Happy New Year!
It was great to meet you as well! Rain stopped the hike, but not the fun. Take care and Happy New Year.
Glad to see the bands back together!
At least for one more encore 😂
Great seeing you and Bluegrass again! I’m hoping for a post-AT review, including thoughts and gear. Plus, how’s your leg?
Working on it! My leg is getting better, but it had me down for a while.
Glad to hear you’re healing up. Hoping nothing permanent. Looking forward to the reviews! Take care
Nothing permanent. Doc said it’s just a calcium deposit on my knee cap. It should dissolve over time.
@ That’s good to hear 👍
Thanks, Bandit. I was wondering how you were doing (health). 😊
Great running into you and Bandit as you were coming into Fresh Grounds on day 1. Have really enjoyed your journey.
Hi Flower Power. It was great meeting you as well. Hopefully we get to do it again next year.
I think you mean Bluegrass.
@@JimLadd-t7xoops! You’re correct! Sorry, Bandit!
@ my pleasure. We knew what you meant. 😀
Yeah. I knew what you meant as well 😂
2024 was an incredible class of hikers. Thanks for documenting your journey! Happy New Years!
It really was, and we had a great year in which to do it. I’m sure the class of 25 will be awesome as well!
Good to see you again my friend!
Thanks, glad to be hiking again.
How has the post trail transition been? Also, how does it feel to now be recognized in public by UA-cam watchers?
To be truthful, I struggled a bit with the transition. Post hike depression is real. But I’m back on my feet again and doing well. It does feel good to be recognized. It doesn’t happen often, but it’s nice when it does.
So great seeing you again. Miss you two! ☺ Happy 2025!
Thanks for watching, and we are back at it again for 2025!
@@ChuckHowell-Outdoors I am SOOOO excited for this! ☺
Hey Bandit! Good to see you. Good job staying vertical! Happiest of New Years to you and the family.
Happy New Years to you as well! I tripped over roots a few times, but kept my butt off the ground 😂
It was great seeing you again! Happy Trails!!
Thanks Nickels!! Good to see you again as well!
Good to see y’all God bless
Thanks. 🙏🏻
Yeah, Bandit and Bluegrass back together!
Hopefully we get to do more hikes sometime.
What was your anti-tick routine?
We treated our clothes with permethrin every 4 weeks. Never had a tick
Trail as friend and adversary -- love it.
It was indeed both.
I just bought a pair on Amazon, I think I only paid like 60 bucks for them. But they look solid and I'm excited to use them. I was using a shooting stick as my walking stick which I really shouldn't have but I beefed it up a little bit with epoxy, but I knew I need to get some trucking poles, but I really wanted one with a shooting rest on the top even if I had a rig one up myself. Lo and behold there isn't adapter for one for these sticks I was so happy. I not only use it for my rifle every now and then but mostly for my binoculars to rest on them when I'm sitting down or standing up and I don't want there to be a bunch of movement. Can't wait to try these things out!
They should serve you well! I retired the pair that I took on the AT…..and just bought a new pair just like them!
I and hubby been watching
Glad you're along for the ride!
Being ahead of the bubble for the first month or so is reason enough for me to want to start in early February.
Yeah. That was my reasoning. It’s looking like the bubble is backing up every year. I started Feb 18 and I think that was about right. The bubble never really caught up to us.
@ Good to know! I thought you started earlier than that. I’m still making my way through all your videos and loving it. Really inspiring me!
