Cultivating a finer balance
Yoga is defined as samatvam - evenness, and as karmasu kauśalam - skilfulness in our actions.
As long as we are alive, we are maintaining some quite impressive level of balance - homeostasis.
Yoga begins, again and again, when we own and admit that the homeostasis we have allowed ourselves to become accustomed to is not the finest balance we might be capable of and we could do something about it!
We might realise that we have beome 'ten-headed', like Rāvaṇa in Rāmāyaṇa - imbalanced with five heads on one side, four on the other, the ego-mind complex out of kilter and perpetuating unnecessary suffering. Yoga gives us the robust and practical means to steadily cultivate and incarnate a finer balance. Yoga offers us time-proven principles to steady and guide us on the lifelong adventure to recognising more of who we really are and what we are really made of.
If you are interested in exploring the robust, practical principles of the yoga tradition and how you can bring their support into all aspects of your life, follow along here, subscribe to my podcast, sign up for my newsletter on my webite to hear about courses and offerings first. Wishing you a blessed and nourishing Solstice weekend.

On Enchantment & the Transcendent: the only white boy in the 2nd Baptist Church w/ William S Whorton
Переглядів 7014 годин тому
In this fourth conversation with William S Whorton, I ask him about one of the formative experiences of his life that I have had the privilege of reading about, Bill's first encounter with the TRANSCENDENT through the music that came into his life as he walked past the Second Baptist Church one Sunday in his hometown as a teenager. Bill then went on to become the only white member of this churc...

I enjoyed this third conversation with William S Whorton, co-translator with Acharn Tassanee Sinsakul of The Bhagavad Gītā published last year by Uppsala Books: uppsalabooks.com/bg on the 65th anniversary of Bill's first day of training in the Marine Corps. It is a privilege to listen to Bill and receive some of the fruits of a lifetime of seeking and practice on the WAY of yoga and the sincere...

Yoga is about the whole of our lives: everything we do, all we experience. It is about stretching our understanding of who we really are, strengthening our connection to the innate wisdom of our conscience and rehabilitating our broader human capacities while working respectfully with the realities of our individual natures and our diverse responsibilities. Yoga practice is about training ourse...

Sometimes people have the misperception that yoga is about 'chillaxing' or 'going with the flow'. Yoga is about balance. Sometimes of course, taking things easy and going with the flow is the optimal way of being, but if we just go with the flow, it won't be long before we are tipped over a waterfall, lacerated on razor rock or stranded in an oxbow lake... Yoga practice is about getting in the ...

On mastery and apprenticeship
Переглядів 43Місяць тому
A fairly freewheeling episode in which I share thoughts on mastery and apprenticeship. In recent weeks I have had the privilege and joy to share in person with several long term colleagues whom I had not seen for some time. More than once this topic came up. It seems in the world today that genuine mastery of a particular art, craft or discipline is perhaps rarer than only a short time ago. In ...
Yoga āsana - what's the story?
Переглядів 90Місяць тому
Āsana literally means 'seat', the seat not just of our physical body, but of our whole psychic reality. Yoga techniques seek to cultivate a seat of awareness that is steady and clear, so we can move through the rich opportunities of life with greater poise, ease and in ways that can help us keep learning along the way. These days, āsana, or yoga posture practice, is one of the ways many people ...

Hello James! I was researching this prayer like what is the source? And I found that these 2 verses are from Yoga Tārāvali. My first question, is it true? Secondly, we all know this is also the starting prayer of ashtanga asana prayer, in which there is added Abahu purushakaram.... Do you know who created/combined these 2 different prayers together? And last question, is there Om Shanti Shanti Shantih in the end of Abahu purushakaram prayer?

Thank you! and greetings from the E Ridings. Recently I've been growing my courage finally addressing challenging situations in a few friendships. It has been hard to do but ultimately more painful not to. In the past its been easier to smile, ignore, let things pass and pretend....stay in the uncomfortable comfort zone ... but I feel very gratefu thatl Ive finally chosen to be courageous. And now I can trust myself more.

Awesome James 🙏 fully agree ☺️ morality is easy in the good times, as is good will to others, the test is when all is dark and you end up on the wrong side of a probability curve 🤔 and when we fail, as we all can, to accept this and understand that we have only truly failed when we give up and turn our backs on the light of goodness we can all find within 🌞 but I believe, in time, we all turn back, as we are born again, (both figuratively and literally), in this life and the next 😊🌀

108 Gopis where in Rasa Dance with Krsna and He expanded 108 times do dance with the 108 Gopis at the same time. This is why after the 108 beads there is one different bead(krsna) God . Yoga is all about the Yogesvara (the creator of yoga) and everything goes back to Him.

so true! I had a wonderful childhood in vibrant Venezuela and then . . . we moved to Guildford. Even at 10 I knew something was very, very wrong. I'Mlad that Uni in Hull inspired fresh hope in humanity and allotmenting now likewise - but boy England has a way to go. Another silver lining from this 'situation' we are in - some of us are reaching out a whole lot more. Thanks for your thoughts I will heartily engage all the more. love Son
