Iceland, Jan Mayen & Svalbard | Aurora Expeditions | Shot On FX3 + OM-1
This is a small collection of my favourite clips from a recent commercial shoot for Aurora Expeditions and their Iceland, Jan Mayen & Svalbard expedition aboard the Sylvia Earle.
Having shot stills + guided with them numerous times in the Arctic and Antarctic regions, it was refreshing to focus purely on capturing motion.
Thanks to the always amazing E-team for allowing me to use them as talent and manoeuvre the zodiacs just how I needed to nail the shot.
NOTE: All shots of wildlife were shot at safe distances per AECO guidelines using 800mm Lenses.
I carried the below kit with me on every outing and it allowed me to cover all bases and be prepared for chance wildlife encounters.
- A-Cam - Sony FX3 (Handheld + Gimbal) - amzn.to/46bjclf

Hey guys, Here is my long-term portfolio of the OM-1 and how this little beast has enabled me to shoot commercially all over the world. Rather than being a technical review, I thought it would be much more beneficial for you to see the actual shots I captured rather than me just telling you the camera can do all of these things. This is not an exhaustive list of projects, but a selection I thin...

This year I had the pleasure of filming this short branded documentary for a good mate back in my rural hometown of Orange. So I’m 11 months behind on this video but I did subscribe today. This video is awesome! I have a Lumix G9ii and S5ii. I bought the S5ii but I’m not sure that I would have had the G9ii been released. I bought a bunch of the lumix primes and I am absolutely in love with micro four thirds. I may try the OM-1 next. Thanks again for this high quality content
No idea why OMsystems does not portray the video aspect. It's always the wildlife. Seriously people are missing so much
This content is some of the best I’ve seen in recent times. It’s truly inspiring, and the level of professionalism is outstanding. I recently switched from Sony to Olympus (OMS), always with the same doubt about whether the tool would be enough, and so on. Definitely, it’s the person, not the gear, and this video proves it beyond a doubt. Please keep uploading content like this! Cheers!
Hey! thanks so much for the kind words. Glad to hear my work resonates with you! Stoked to know you made the move to OM. It's a big jump thats for sure. I actually shoot Sony and Blackmagic for my main commercial video work. Everything has it's place :)
I think a night light show is like theater - bright highlights in lots of colors, probably changing rapidly, and very dark backgrounds. For theater, once I control highlights sufficiently to avoid blowing them out, I let the deepest shadows fall to black, and everything in between should be OK. Sometimes, I will bring up some of the medium shadows, but with a light touch. I shoot with three Olympus bodies that pre-date the OM-1.
Hello, I just found your channel and subscribed. I also just recently purchased a slightly used Olympus OM-D EM-1 Mk II with grip. (Full disclosure, I am a 40+ year Nikon shooter.). I was immediately attracted to the Olympus due to its smaller form factor and outstanding ergonomics. The camera came with a rather unremarkable kit lens, but I immediately purchased the lens you reviewed here as well as the excellent 40-150 f4 PRO. So, far, I am really enjoying learning the Olympus/OM System and may take this camera and lenses with me to Vietnam next month rather than my larger NIKON gear. My main reason for buying the 8-25mm f4 PRO were several of the positive reviews here on YT and finding yours just today confirmed my decision. I am looking forward to finding and viewing more of your videos and wish you much continued success with your channel. Thank you again for such a thorough review of my latest Olympus purchase.
Hey thanks Paul! glad you dig the channel. Great you have the EM-1 MKII. Such a good camera. Some of my best work has been on that little thing! Keep pushing it to it's limits and you will get some awesome stuff!
I love your colors edition, especially the autumn color ones.
Thank you! yes, that little area was so nice in Autumn. So random on the side of the road too!
great BTS was this just using the OM1 and EM1iii or did you also use the BM Cinema Camera? also, have you ever tried the OM1 12bit footage using external recorder?
This was the very best video I've seen on this camera and the whole mft system in general! Thanks so much for showing us the real world use in so many different settings. I was especially fascinated by the Vivid Sidney part, as the low light capability is my major concern of further investing into my Olympus system. You use all the fast pro lenses for this, which obviously do a great job. But I am wondering, as they are both expensive and heavy: Do you think there is still the size and price benefit of mft compared to full frame when using these setups? I would be very glad if you @etchd or someone else could clarify this for me. Thank you ☺️
Beautiful 😍 Gimbal/steadiness would have taken this to another level. Amazing work still 🤝💐💐💐
Question I sold my OM-1 for a Nikon Z63. And I don’t do videos, at all. But I was afraid that I was missing out on image quality. 20mpx vs 24mpx. And noise and lighting and Dynamic Range…. In the real world, by comparison, is there a difference in image quality? If not, then I’d probably just swap back to Olympus. I miss the in camera stacking, I miss the in-camera ND filters. And I’ve only printed up to a 28x36, and the image looks good (from my OM-1) I haven’t printed anything from my Nikon yet. What are your thoughts to this? I shoot lots of landscape, some wildlife (birds and stills), macros, and some Astro. I don’t do a lot of cropping in, but I do pixel peep. So, if I’m talking about a big difference vs slightly a little, then I’ll probably go back. Just looking for a professional opinion here. Thank you, Brian
Hi, man. I have EM-10 IIIs with 25/45 primes and it produces images with better IQ than i can compare to anything M43-ish found online. However, IQ not even close to my D780. M43 images look flat and dull, lacking on clarity and microcontrast, very noisy, D780 files are much more tweakable in PP. M43 is okay hiking camera when opportunity is unknown and any M43 image beats no image, but FF is a camera of choice, when you know your target.
Subbed...😊.. cannot beat real world experience ❤
Amazing work! The portraits on the beach are absolutely sublime! Cheers, mate! And Lisa totally killed it! 🙌
Stunningly shot
@@ericaceous1652 thank you for the love ! ❤️
Solution for your small hip and hip belt problem... On Action X V2 the hip belt can be changed in the length. So when you buying a hip belt from V2 you may can solve your problem 😊
Where abouts did you get yours? Its so hard to find one in Australia for a price that isnt absolutely insane
A most insightful and top notch video Matt many thanks …you have made my mind up to stay with Olympus.
Best to edit/stitch in camera or with Olympus proprietary software preferably
Om1 and in general Olympus has excellent self cleaning sensor tech…no problem handling dust in Namibia so you can swap lenses on the move
Sir, I am a big fan of your work. I will second the comments of many people here. OM Systems needs to feature you more and the varied genres you work in to highlight the versatility of system. Not every one of their consumers are bird/nature photographers. I am curious. I am looking to do some urban evening video work shooting with the OM-1 combined with the M.Zuiko 17mm/1.8. Are there any cameras settings that you’d recommend? Thanks and regards Eric Charles Jones
Hi Eric, thanks so much for the kind words! It's a tricky one there as OM are deliberatly looking to hone in on their niche rather than compete with the other brands who are markeing that they do it all. There is just not enough users out there i think to warrant pushing the other genres. Who knows for the future though! In regards to video, I just leave it at h.265 (so you get 10-bit) and as I'm in Australia I shoot all audio and non slow mo clips at 25p and all slo-mo at 50p. Shutter 180degree. The low light face tracking AF is good, but haven't really tested it at night so I can't comment on that. I use manual focus quite a lot for video. Hope that helps. Matt.
@@etchd_ Thanks I appreciate your feedback. Regards
hello, congratulations on your work. it would be nice to see a video on how you set up your om1 for weddings. regards, Andrea.
Hi mate! thanks so much. Have you checked out my wedding photography video? It's not really about the OM-1 but same principals apply . I pretty much use Continuous AF with eye AF always turned on. That's for scenes with people. For details and stationary i just reduce the focus point to a single and still use C-AF, although i prob should use S-af ha.
Thank you for this professional and transparent video about your work with the Olympus OM-1 and the listed equipment. As a Micro Four Thirds photographer, this helps me a lot, and it's great to see that I'm not the only one who appreciates the advantages of Olympus. Thank you.
Hey mate thanks so much for the love. I'm glad you found it inspiring. It's a shame people think of this system, or any for that matter as a limitation. They really just need to learn their craft a bit better!
@@etchd_ You're absolutely right about that. I happened to come across MFT with Olympus without really considering the advantages or disadvantages. I've always liked the quality of Zuiko lenses. The portability of the lenses was actually a key factor in my decision to join the system. During a photoshoot at a drag racing event, someone next to me had a 1DX with a 200mm lens. I had my 300mm with me and thought to myself that I wouldn't want to carry that heavy equipment around all day. The colors from the Olympus sensors are fantastic. I really like the look of MFT. While many people shoot with full-frame cameras, with my Olympus I always get a different look.
I shot Canon for about a year, and had the RF 50/1.2. It's a GORGEOUS lens, but holy-hell it's heavy!
Do you print your work, how large can you print from this system? I’m thinking of buying into the OM system, I’m looking for a smaller lighter setup.
Your work is outstanding.
I appreciate the kind words! :)
Bro.. i just found your video 2 years later... full of knowledge, common sense and precise details... excellent work, great images... tremendous reasoning. Thanks for sharing... I'm going out right now to take pictures with my Summilux lenses 20mm, 25mm.... F1.7 ..thaaanks fffkkk a lot!!!!
haha All good things come to those who wait, right?! Hopefully it helped you make an informed decision!
AMAZING WORK, Matt! I loved the music as well..
Hi Helen! thank you so much! Have you ever been here? How's your video shooting going?
I've been shooting Olymus for almost 15 years, and the damn algorithm just now suggested your profile?! Damn the McKinnons and the Northrups of the world, we need more OM and Olympus inspirarion like this! Keep up the amazing work, mate! Cheers from Bulgaria! 🤙
ha thanks for the kind words! A lot of youtubers are personalities 1st then photographers 2nd. Which often means they base opinions of equipment on work that isn't up to the standard it needs to be to back their claims.
Doubt that is actually Iceland. The weather was way too nice... Beautiful work though. Were did you do the kavaking?
Haha We had some great weather! I would have also been happy if it was bad, I love the darker looking scenes. Not so good for the passengers though. Kayaking was all over, but we were in the West Fjords and also up in Svalbard!
Simply jaw dropping!
Thanks so much!
Love seeing what can be done to these landscapes when a skilled person is behind the camera
Ah I appreciate the love. It's one of those places I feel is hard not to shoot well ha.
Stunning Matt. Such an incredible place!
Thanks so much! It was a short time but a great time! Hopefully you will see some of the hours of other footage I shot appear!
The best review I've found about this lens (by far), congratulations!
Thanks for the clarification on how to use the recorder and bypassing the camera preamps. On my own I was getting a lot of noise from the camera. A great help!
Incredible
I was eager to order an OM-1 plus two lenses from their online shop but changed my mind since after 4 days I still haven't received a reply to a simple question I sent to customer support regarding their current promotion. If this is how pre-sales customer support is how would post-sales support be? I don't want to find out and stick to my canon.
great video thank you
Great video. On my full frame Canons, the 40mm pancake was my favorite lens. As I look at which prime to get for my Olympus bodies for low light events or being up close to indoor sports, I have been going back and forth between 17mm, 16mm and 15mm. But I think the answer is that the 20mm f/1.4 is more flexible for lots of different things and it can be combined with a 10mm or 12mm f/2 for when you want or need to go wide.
The water bladder on the front is a glaring issue for mine. I really wish they could figure out a way of keeping it close to the wearer’s back
FUCKING BACKGROUND MUSIC ASSSSSSHOLLLLE
Best explanation on explaining Olympus!
You are a talented photo/videographer that showcases what the system can do like few others have. There's no blaming this system for bad result. Also refreshing to see something other than birds photography 😊
Does DJI RS 3 compatible with OM 1 ?
Hi mate, no it is not. You have to trigger manually!
@@etchd_ Hi Matt, thanks for let me know
I think it's great that you back up your presentation with brilliant pictures.
Ahh thanking you! Yes, there is no way of showing people what can be done unless they see the images themselves!
What do you use to re-waterproof the bag?
Hi mate, Nikwax tent is a good option. Check the Shimoda YT as they have the exact video to watch :)
@@etchd_ Thanks
I would like to ask, when you use OM-1 to install the stabilizer, what if it triggers recording? It seems that only the original wireless remote control can record illegally. Do you have a better method?
Hi mate, sorry, I am a little confused what you mean?
@@etchd_ Okay, if you install OM-1 on DJI Stabilizer, how do you press the record button? Or are you booting via Bluetooth?
@@jackygoodlife Ahh right. Unfortunately, you can't. You have to trigger via the camera. Not a deal breaker, but can be annoying in spur of the moment shooting!
To anyone wondering about OM-System/Olympus/M43 systems, THIS is the video you need to watch. I had to watch this several times over to be able to formulate adequate words expressing my gratitude towards this video. This is, without any doubt, a fantastic review. Not just of a lens, not just a camera- of a system, a way of photographing. I thank you, so, so much. Finally someone showing other things then "let's see how the camera focuses on this bird and this brick wall". I am genuinely in *awe* of the results you're showing. You do fantastic work- if I am ever half as skilled as you one day, I will count myself blessed. Thank you again and all the best from Norway. :)
Thanks so much for the kind words! All modern cameras are capable of incredible shots. You just need to work out the strengths and play to them. M4/3 cameras have so many strengths, I just choose to use those and push what i can out of it :)
Simply awesome. Best photography video I've seen, and I've watch too many...kudos man.
Ahh thank you Chris. That means a lot! I'm glad it resonated with you.
Nice work
Thanks so much for the love!
Great to see how you work Matt, composing with the LCD screen. I rarely use the screen largely because I would need to use my reading glasses, and doing that whilst moving is difficult, and then having to remove them when using the EVF. Its annoying because I really feel I am missing out on shots/perspectives by using the EVF almost 100%
btw the work that has gone into these videos is just remarkable, greatly appreciated; and the results are fabulous, a joy to watch
Amazing shots IQ's are perfect. Very few youtubers who use OM system show photos like those. The IQ & color science in this camera look perfect to me.
Appreciate the love mate! These cameras sure are powerful!
