Did my best to line up "I'll wait" to the silent footage. It's clearly what they are listening back to. I didn't even have to change the speed, and Ed's tapping always lined up.

All of the instruments were recorded, and mixed by me. It's my attempt at the "Women and Children First" era sound, which is probably one of my top 3 "full band" sounds of VH.

RVC AI voice. I used Dave Matthews' cover to start with, and I did heavy EQ and processing to sound like a lost demo from John or something. I thought the backwards solo was fitting too

Using RVC for this test. I recorded myself singing the harmonies and put those through the AI models that I trained myself. Still working on the Michael Anthony one, it sounds good all together but on it's own not so much. I only had some live audio of him singing lead to use.. Stay tuned

The original footage was silent... I added VHS noise, footsteps, creaks, and of course my interpretation of what he's playing in this clip. Did my best to line it up as close as possible by slowing it down. Hope you enjoy!

The real secret to good midi drum recreations is multi-sampling. Unless you are copying an electronic drum, you must sample at least 4 hits from the isolated tracks for each drum. From there you randomize the hits so it *almost* sounds human.

Is there any way you could recommend to recreate the samples like you did? Or a possibility of a sample pack of the drums for both hysteria and pyromania to be available from you? Both albums are some of my favorite drum sounds
@@domsthepanda9594 I can’t remember which of my Def Leppard videos I commented it. i posted an unlisted video for anyone who wanted the Hysteria samples without reverb (no cymbals) if you look around the internet you may find the multitracks I used to copy the pyromania sounds. I’m not even sure if I have them anymore :/
Your audio is so bad, I gave up after 5 seconds. Mumble mumble.
The idea was not that there was a recording of a car engine, but that the engine was used as a midi trigger for the first few seconds
Simmons electronic drums were not triggered by midi. I'm not sure you understand that midi was only first introduced into very few instruments starting in 1983, and it was the Jupiter 6 and prophet 600 keyboards. I'm not even sure where you came up with that. The theories on this get more wild every day. Do a little research before perpetuating them
@ from the Simmons-V Wikipedia page "Each module also had a 1/4" jack trigger input allowing triggering from various sources including the SDS-6 and even audio". I misspoke when I referred to this as midi triggering but the idea remains the same- an engine sound quite possibly triggered the first couple seconds. No need to be a dick about it. I'm not even saying I think the myth is true, I'm saying it doesn't even sound like you are setting it up correctly to attempt to debunk it.
@@RayleneSteves "quite possibly" according to what? there is zero documentation of that. Why would they do that as opposed to 1. playing it on the pads (how it was actually done) or 2. just recording an engine from the get-go. a lot of theories can be answered easily if you just ask "why?", in this case, "why would they go out of their way to do that?" sorry if my comments come off as being a dick. I take this seriously and don't just throw around ideas without any proof whether it be documentation or my own detailed tests. the first few seconds are completely playable and that has been demonstrated in dozens of covers.
@ "why?" Because it would be a fun, exciting and creative thing to do in the studio? Absolutely no shame in that. There are plenty of people who have photographed playing it but Alex Van Halen is not one of them.
@@RayleneSteves there's too much evidence that supports that alex played all of the intro himself in one take. if you don't see that, then I don't know what to tell you. theorize all you want but without evidence it means nothing.
Thanks for posting this, it's absolutely wonderful to hear his rhythm playing stripped back like this!

Whew ,,,,,,so had been playing right the whole time ..LOL ....i did see that other vid and have doubts ...But ...i know allot of drummers and they could all play Hot For Teacher as above . The Simmons electric drum is what possibly threw me . Thanks For the excellent Breakdown ...Nice work . Cheers .
The only muffling in the bass drums back then was felt strips.
maybe live, but that does not indicate what was going on in the studio. Engineers made drummers do all kinds of things in the studio to make not only the drums record easier, but the rest of the instruments. felt strip drums tuned to alex's pitch still had a lot of decay. that is not what you hear on VH1 or VH2 remember that Landee and Templeman only recorded Yacht rock around the time they were recording VH. a pillow in the kick or equivalent was common practice
Anymore of this old stuff

@tanneryordan thanks 🎸👍
Sounds great at 1.5 speed too. Just saying
Could you somehow give me the samples and sounds of each of the drum parts?
what an incredible job congratulations
He looks a lot like Richard Ramirez in this clip
What a phenomenal breakdown video. Literally understood every bit. Thank you. I'd always heard it was impossible. Whenever you isolated that Simmons and toms track, I was shocked. It's odd though. I can't find any live sets of Alex playing the whole thing. He typically starts at the point where the ride comes in. I hope you can look into that. Maybe you can dig up footage of him doing the Harley solo live.
@@ChristianCline-c7x go to themightyvanhalen.net and look for 1984 bootlegs. he doesnt play the intro from the start, but he at least does the part right before the ride comes in. not to mention that his entire drum solo directly after was the same pattern (that everyone gets wrong) until he would do the buildup in speed on the Simmons tom. it sounds different because he is using Rototoms for the syncopated bit in the studio version, whereas the live version has all electronic drums.
Yeah, that's why I still think the roto-tom is overdubbed. It's an awesome intro, and it doesn't take away from the monster playing, but I just think that tom is overdubbed.
Grooving to the masterpiece
WHATS THE POINT We have First album to enjoy.. lets here hot summer nights with Roth
it was simply a test to prove I could do it. I prefer to test things against existing songs to compare before trying other tracks
Wholly SIMMONS DRUMS batman! Mutt Lang is a genius!
Simmons mixed with Linndrum and some real drums/cymbals as well. Nobody was doing this stuff until Mutt did it!
I think he never did this one live at shows because the solo was in a different tuning and didn't feel like lugging around that double trouble guitar
@@Kylemuaythai47-y3q the song wasn’t recorded on the guitar from this footage regardless. it was recorded on his Ripley telecaster guitar with the stereo splitting capabilities.
Dang....that bass is angry!
abi ben de istiyommmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
2 bass drums were just for show.
sometimes. the FOUR bass drums were for show, but more often than not he was using double bass drums. the single pedal came in the 90s and he alternated off and on with the single and double pedals for the rest of his career
It's not seamless, you can hear a very quick cross fade. He didn't play it all in one take
Chris Gill confirmed it with eddie and alex himself. There is no debate here anymore. Besides, the dry track for the guitar was released earlier this year and you can hear the drum into bleeding into the guitar track, one take, no cuts. I think you're splitting atoms
Dude, that was the best myth-buster episode ever. Well researched and presented! I've seen it played live (both Alex and others) and I've never seen a Lamborghini on stage 😂
I would love to remake this video with some more information that I've collected since! I have gotten some more confirmation from important people in the community that strengthen the case...
theres definitely overdubbing of the drums going on , for sure
no overdubbing. everything in this intro is completely playable. this was confirmed to me by Chris Gill who spoke to Eddie multiple times, and apparently alex once.
@@tanneryordan just my opinion , ive listened to this a million times , sounds over dubbed
@@soundbreak7 it sounds overdubbed because you are dealing with analog signal and acoustic signal. the kicks and tom that you hear first thing are electronic drums that are being fed straight into the mixing board, with no bleed from other instruments. the Roto tom being recorded is much more ambient and it makes it sound like it was recorded at another time. once you have that explanation, there is nothing else that "sounds overdubbed" because it's completely possible to play in one take. there isn't really any opinion to have other than the dozen pieces of evidence that point to alex doing it all in one take, no overdubs. there is no debate on this anymore
@@tanneryordan LOL if you say so , the only ones who really know are the ones who recorded it
@@soundbreak7 and they have all spoken on it in some form… all confirming exactly what i’m saying to you. chris gill telling me that he specifically asked them, and getting the same answer multiple times is proof enough.
The first time I ever heard it I said those are hertas played with the hands. I just didn’t know what he was using, I figured it was something like a gong bass drum. The simmons makes total sense. Great video! it’s a great track regardless, and an innovative intro done in his style. 🥁👍🏼
This is pretty well done, dude 👍🏻
Wolfgang Van Halen has all that old equipment. Didn't he use it to record some songs? On his second follow-up album? He said he used the exact same app with the exact same cabinet and Frankenstein. Why don't you try to get an answer from him as to what speakers are in that actual cabinet?
@@pvampman ed’s favorite cabinet did not have JBL speakers in it, that’s for sure. the JbL cabinet was parted out/given away decades ago. the likelyhood of the same speakers being in ed’s favorite slant cab, that were used on the first album is extremely low. in fact, the speakers in it for the Metropolitan museum were not the same speakers in it for the WACF photoshoot in the studio, so they were 100% changed sometime. there also is no documentation for what ed even used on the early albums, and even if he told wolf later in life, he likely was misremembering because he really didn’t give an F. I get this comment all the time in my theory videos. “just ask wolfgang” or “just ask alex” as if that is the easiest thing to do. feel free to reach out to them or their team and you will likely fall upon dead ears. if it were that easy, we would have known 20 years ago.
Best breakdown I've seen. I've never heard a drummer repeat what was on the album, even with seeing Van Halen live. They are often similar, but not exactly the same.
The closest I've seen to what alex actually plays is Josh gallagher on UA-cam. He uses generally the right gear and doesn't do the weird 2 handed triplet on the floor tom that everyone plays wrong. one day I will try to recreate it and show people how it's 100% actually played
This is great, thanks a million, but I wish there was a slightly longer delay before the music actually starts. I mean, most if us who try to play Eddie are moderately fast, but not THAT fast, lol, I can't get my hands on the guitar fast enough, after clicking play. Minor thing, again, yur stuff is greatly appreciated!!!
Very faithful - especially the fat flam separation. Really useful - thanks
Thanks, I used samples straight from the album for accuracy
You can clearly hear him click a drumstick right the off the bat in the intro, obviously played with his hands.
I wish it were that obvious for other people... I hear it too!

Hello, can I get those samples?
I wish I had of saved it but there’s a guy that has a old charger specially camed out to play the herta intro. But he did it in the 90s.
@@philobetto1224 every car guy I’ve talked to who knows anything has told me “If ed’s lamborghini V12 sounded like the HFT intro, it was broken” lol
they and Billy Joel had some of the best 70’s production
Can you do this for "Until It Sleeps" but post the entire song?
That's awesome. I know it's time consuming, but using AI to generate Phil's voice would be spectacular. :)
Hey new subscriber olive branch, I am curious about VHs drum sound for Everybody Wants Some, like how Alex got that jungle sound and maybe a demonstration.
Funny you ask, because I was planning on skipping the third album because it just isn't that different than the second... From my experiments, I believe that Alex was using single-headed toms all around the kit for the recording of WACF. I also believe from my experiments that they were mic'ing them from the underside or inside. This is what he did live on the 79 tour, all the way into 83 tour, so I have a theory that WACF was their first attempt in trying to make alex's drum sounds more like their live sound, rather than their more muffled attempts on the first 2 albums. Mic'ing concert toms from the bottom has a sort of basketball tone to it, not to mention the isolation you get from not having the mic's on top. That mixed with the fact that alex tuned his concert toms WAY higher than most created that tribal/jungle sound in my opinon. Here is the video that planted the seed in my head ua-cam.com/video/yvp--SeAQb4/v-deo.html
A straight ahead beat but those fills are so clean, so sweet. And this tune showed VH could most certainly pull off a dark, intriguing keyboard tune. Unfortunately, they never did it again. Mine All Mine is the closest they got.
Hey man would you PLEASE share the samples?
Say what you wanna say 'bout Dave's singing but his lyrics, delivery and attitude is one of the great ingredients to the first era. Fit perfectly with Ed's music.
how did you sample it? i already have the reasamplomatic5000 plugin and i know how to multi sample but idk how to get each drum sound from mop album
If you find a source of the "multitrack" from the Guitarhero/Rockband games you will be able to sample the drums easier. I can't seem to find them anymore, so if you can't find them, use the isolated drum tracks on UA-cam.
@@tanneryordan i will look more into guitar hero games, i appreciate it dude thank you a lot
@@nekropsyyyyyy I used to get them all from one website that has been taken down. It had almost every "multitrack" ripped from those games. Those games are the only reason we have access to pretty much any isolated track, aside from the recent ones done with AI. Regardless, it still takes a bit of work to mix them once you have them loaded in (reverb, EQ, educated midi programming, etc.)
@@tanneryordan ill dig deep into those multi tracks, i never thought of finding it through games, that was a very nice idea i hope i can find them
@@tanneryordan Yo, i was able to make it somewhat decent. Just posted on my channel if you'd like to hear, obviously its not that good yet but your tips helped a lot thank you!
