    Actually I try to avoid subtitles because of their incorrectness I encountered many times. At the same time while I'm distracted with reading subtitles it's often a risk to lose a phrase both visually and audibly

    It is interesting to hear what people think about languages. I have Latvian and Russian, which I listened to without subtitles because of my childhood... You have to have the word in your brain with the sound of the dialect, which is simply impossible if you have not lived in the country in childhood.

    Jackie Chan says something about not wanting to talk to people in America tray to imitate tying shoes. When I lived in Ireland, I spent the first three years learning to speak myself instead of just talking to my colleagues. I would say something to them or ask them something and they would respond in a way that I did not understand. Those three years were the most difficult for me in this country.

    • @EnglishwithBrittany
      @EnglishwithBrittany 6 днів тому

      Thank you so much for sharing that. I think your story is very similar to the experience that many people have. (also, you have probably come to understand Irish accents better than I can 😀It's a beautiful, but difficult accent to understand for many Americans!)

      @@EnglishwithBrittany I was born in a region of Latvia where a dialect of Latvian is spoken. When I was 3 years old, my parents moved away from this region. I still have the ability to understand this dialect, but I have never spoken a word of it. Not all Latvians understand it. At school I learned German, which also has many dialects. About problems with understanding in another country, yes, people have problems if they did not live in that country in their childhood.

      @@EnglishwithBrittany I worked in a workplace where many people did not speak English. They asked me to help them if they could not find a better translator than me with broken English. I felt annoyed and always tried to tell them to do what I did in learning English to improve my language, but I did not know that I had been exposed to English in my youth and the real language was behind me. I was only over 30 when I started to learn my second language from the past and my progress was very slow without the feeling of words. The feeling of words is the grammar of a language and natives have this feeling much better than we do with our second language, but my English has not worked as my second language for 18 years. I do not know how it happened but English started to work as my second 3-4 months ago. Now I have a new second language at my age.

      This is a big question! And unfortunately, there is no specific amount of time that can be applied to all learners. My advice would be: Set a 3-month or 6-month goal. Practice as regularly as you can. Make it interesting and meaningful for yourself. Record yourself often and get better at self-assessment.

    • @EnglishwithBrittany
      @EnglishwithBrittany 8 днів тому

      Research has shown that when used regularly, the 4/3/2 technique can increase fluency (the ability to link speech without strain or too much hesitation) and can increase vocabulary recall! The amounts of time can be adjusted to the learner’s comfort level and capabilities- 4/3/2 are just the original numbers of minutes from the studies.

    Honestly I don't think speed is the problem for me personally. I understand every word you say and i watch your videos at 2x speed. But i still dont understand movies without subtitles sometimes, and i obviously dont watch them sped up.

    • @EnglishwithBrittany
      @EnglishwithBrittany 8 днів тому

      I understand. It could be the speed. It could be a combination of things (unknown and uncommon vocabulary/expressions, uncommon accents, misunderstanding because of weak forms or contractions). I personally also prefer to watch series/movies (in English) with subtitles because I have a low tolerance for missing anything that's said too quietly or too quickly -- and it's helpful for remembering characters' names. I think many of us just have a preference for subtitles these days.
