2 YEAR FOLLOW-UP to Toilet Flange Fix / Also, Compare Different Toilet Seals
Переглядів 519 тис.4 роки тому
Previously, I made a video showing my toilet flange fix. It was a rusty, off-level and unsupported toilet flange. I went far and above what anyone would normally do to fix it, but in the comments I was told by professional plumbers that I didn't repair it correctly. Maybe they were right. In this video, I pull up my toilet two years later to see if my flange repairs held up. Who was right - the...
Toilet Flange with Many Problems - FIXED! - The Meticulous Hack
Переглядів 646 тис.7 років тому
I hacked away at this awful looking toilet flange to get it to behave. It was out of level, badly rusted and had no support.
Well, call me Ether and keep talkin' cuz this was not only entertaining but also educational. I've been trying to figure out how to not hate my dark boring space. and yeah the other videos use LED fresnel lenses to make a lighted window, but your idea is so cool. I remember saying to a friend, it would be cool if I could have a fake window that would shine sunlight like light in but also have a picture I could look at beyond the lighted frame. It was just a dumb imagination idea, but you made it more real than I thought it could be without being a rich person. I thoroughly enjoyed how real you were with us. I will probably not make the countertop but my own countertops are wearing away and it doesn't hurt to think of creative alternatives when it comes time to replace em. cheers!
Kudos on the follow up video and all the research and sharing about the various seals, etc. The "double seal" you used with the silicon gaskets was working the best it could but you don't have a flat flange surface to support the seal and compress correctly. The black foam doesn't use the adhesive to seal, that is just to hold it togther before install. Since you have no flat flange to compress against below, the wax ring you installed will likely leak. Perhaps the "One and Done" repair flange seal product would work best for your issue here since it has a compressable collar design. Also, a beam level isn't designed to be used flat like that, you need to turn it 90 degrees in a vertical orientation resting on the edge, not the face. It also needs to be set on the bowl, not the seat.
Thanks for the tips, but what do you mean by the "one and done repair flange seal product?"

Ah….. almost all new toilets and valve replacements come with stainless steel hardware!
Rubber, silicone…. Synthetic flange seals will degrade over time. Cleaning products will accelerate the degrading. In addition! Rubber, silicone / synthetic gaskets and seals require nearly perfect mating surfaces and will NOT accommodate any settling or movement which is common in new construction. WAX does not degrade, does not require perfect mating surfaces, can accommodate settling / movement and is impervious to cleaning chemicals. New isn’t always better! Oh! It doesn’t matter if your flange isn’t level!!!
I assume you considered using a real time outdoor camera for your source? Then you could use any view outside your house that you wanted??
It would have to be an expensive outdoor camera or it would look like security cam video, which wouldn't look like you were looking out a window.
Nice socks
Thanks. Nike/Kevin Durant basketball socks.
Toto toilets are engineered for longevity and not clogging up.
That's what I hear. Expensive though.
Just used the Danco Perfect Seal today. I used it EXACTLY as the instructions tell you and I am impressed. Can’t see going back to a wax ring after today. For the record, my flange was flush to the sub-floor but we had added tile. I used the seal with both the black insert and the blue spacer….. sits perfect…. no rocking. It had a wax seal before and I had to shim it to keep from rocking
If a wax seal is installed properly it will not fail. Its been around forever because it works. My experience with Sani Seal is they deteriorate and only last for about 5 years. I've removed 3 toilets in my house to put down new tile and every Sani Seal was collapsed and leaking. They give you unlimited alignment opportunities and thats their advantage.
Great comment. Thanks
Lol 😂" People are pigs"
Love the clear panel on toilet suggestion. Love it!!
I AGREE the Toilet Sealing industry is still in the Flintstone animation era. If a toilet flange was casted to the bottom of the toilet and protruded down into the drain flange a double sided compression seal should seal up the floor/toilet matting surfaces. Fluidmaster is BEST SO FAR!
Wonderful. Loved your straight forward honesty attitude
Thank you and thanks for watching.
Why do you have nuts on the bolts under the toilet ?
Keeps them from flopping around while you're trying to set the toilet, but I should have put flat nuts on them instead of the tall, rounded ones.
Very entertaining video. I prefer the basic and humble old-fashioned wax ring (homeowner here, not a plumber).
Do you really need the full 4” flange opening? Seems like a 2+” horn would be fine since most toilets only have a 2-ish inch trapway anyway
Maybe not. I honestly don't know.
Great video, gives me hope! 😀
Fantastic ideas👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
Video he’s a10 star review by me haha

Great video thanks for helping
You're welcome. Thanks for watching.
You can remove the foam from the spacer.
Why didn't you just use the spacer instead of putting two gaskets?
The spacer is for when the flange is below floor level. That spacer is pretty thick, the toilet wouldn't have even touched the floor if it was sitting up on that thing. I figured I needed one seal to attach to that big flange so that it sealed against it really well, then the second seal would just mostly be a funnel going into the bottom one. That was my logic for that, but I have a follow-up video for this project - two years later I didn't feel good about it once I pulled the toilet and looked at it.
You're fine it's not rocket science lol. Forget all the "professional" plumbers that hate on your work.
I agree!!! We should have better materials by now. Thanks for posting!
Appreciate the comment on the quality of the card stock
The little miniature fan quit working after a couple months, but the card stock is awesome.
Can you show us how to make a pizza sauce?
Taking a break, but gonna start making more videos soon. Will include a pizza sauce. Thanks
If Woody Allen made DIY videos...😉
Nay saying plumbers are probably just mad that some homeowners have enough ingenuity to fix their own things ...better...without giving them ridiculous amounts of money for a crappie (pun intended) 20 min job. Just saying.
overthink much?
Your whole approach is so funny and down to earth!! I will be sending this to my husband, maybe we can make one for our windowless kitchen!! Thank you so much!!
If you need advice along the way, just lemme know. Good luck.
btw, great job doing a detail presentation... the beauty of doing our own work, is that we CAN take the TIME to do extra things a "professional" would NEVER do (95+% of the time) And I think plumbers are AFRAID that people will watch videos like yours and REALIZE HOW EASY it is to DO IT YOURSELF... AND do an even better job...
I think filling in the area around the ring is a brilliant idea... and will improve ease of maintenance and prevent contamination... there is NO WAY in hell a professional plumber would take the time to do that... it would be extra cost and time... they want to come in, get the job done as quickly as possible and get out... I've seen it more than once...
Yep. Probably would charge $600. to do this.
I've seen plumbers who are disgusting pigs telling me the old wax ring (completely discolored from dirt, crap, etc... should be left, not even considering cleaning all the crap that was around the flange or floor, not making any effort whatsoever to even wipe down the floor area whatsoever? (and there was a TON of crap...) So yeah plumbers can be lazy as f@@@ and full of sh@@ (excuse the pun)
get a big plastic straw to go over the bolts before installing the foam seal so that the seal won't get nicked and to protect it from the bolts.
He didn’t use the extender for the flap. U can see his flange was under the floor level. Why u see the water on the blue part. So it wasn’t snug around the hole under the toilet
You are correct. Marty chose to stack two Fluidmaster rings which you can do but only if you use the extender. According to the directions he should have used the extender and then just one of the Fluidmaster rings. This failure was his fault since he did not follow the directions. If the flange would have been lower than the floor then he would have needed to use the extender and then if needed he could have stacked the two Fluidmaster rings to bring it to above the floor.
Cool tweak. TVs weirdly enough tho are the ONE piece of tech that'd Id say almost IS disposable, odd as that sounds. Where everything else has skyrocketed in price, TVs are still cheaper and cheaper for bigger and bigger sizes, they're the outlier product. You can get a smart TV 32inch for 89$ RIGHT NOW, a roku box or similar to plug into any other tv is basically HALF that cost in itself!
I wouldn't say the big ones are disposable though, especially the nice ones.
As a female who cannot even hang a picture properly, I laughed my head off when you told us to pay someone to do our countertops. I'd watch your videos any day to witness your passion but you were right to advise me not to do these things myself!! 😂 Carry on, sir!
As I've told my son, don't do anything I do.
Had no idea that was a fake window. 😆
I always love hearing that. Thanks for watching.
Using a straw for bolt guides is an awesome idea.
I just bought a house. It's on septic. The toilet is very low. The bowl water was high. I was tea baggin. I adjusted the float and the bowl water level is better but it's such a weak flush. I'm not sure if it's because it's such a short toilet or if it can be fixed. I may try buying a new toilet but I was wondering if maybe I may run into the same weak flushing problem due to being on septic. I wonder if there is some pressure or resistance causing the weak flush. I quit flushing toilet paper but it still struggles with just poop. I like your style bty
Ask someone at a plumbers supply store. I do know that some toilets have a stronger flush, especially the ones in commercial buildings because they use vacuum assisted flushing.
I enjoy doing projects even if im not a professional. I've learned a lot about many trades.
Kudos to you for going the extra mile to double check your work. I especially like how you added additional wax to fill in the possible voids in the seal creating a hybrid of both. Great job.
Thanks. Yeah, I did what I felt like needed to be done here, but I have a follow-up video to this one and it didn't hold up all that well. The biggest problem was that my drain opening was too big for this seal. Also, these rubber seals have a problem holding up to the chemicals in the water ...over time.
I would pay just about any amount of money to see John Malkovich play this guy in the movie version of this video.
😂
Menard in my area of Michigan 2024 fall has mountain cedar , Pittsburgh.
In Chicago they don't even have it on their color chart for the semi-transparent stains.
Connecting security cameras like this is even better
The first 45 seconds of this video is super relatable man
Marty.....Forget the haters.... just keep on rocking with you caulk out.
Haha, priceless. I've gotta use that one for a video title or something. Thanks for watching.
Thank you so much for the great humors and practical techniques and approach.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching
