Don't Make THIS Mistake Winter Camping with a Diesel Heater
Atlas dog and I go winter camping in well below freezing temperatures to test out a diesel heater by VEVOR with the roof top tent. Of course I had to learn a lesson since I was trying something new out... Basically any tips on 12volt batteries in the comments would be very helpful :) Anyways, join us as we camp on the shore of the frozen Au Sable River in snow covered Michigan!

A good deep cycle battery would do fine for you if you dont go with a power supply.
Eggs? That's considered 'glamping' these days if you have eggs. I'm kidding of course. Another great video.
Just discovered your videos. Love watching you and Atlas. You take very good care of her. Can’t wait to watch more videos. Happy camping!
I have that identical diesel heater, it is a good heater. The battery was way too small, it's more than just having a 12v battery. Also, not sure what battery chemistry you picked, but if you had picked a temperature sensitive chemistry like lithium-ion, there is no reason why could not have the battery in the warm tent with you, just get longer wires. But it is always good to see Atlas.
Yeah it's your battery. There's not enough capacity to run that for very long as you noticed. If you have a jackery that would be great. If you go the power station route do some research on the Bluetti ones. I've seen that the cigarette lighter outputs can't handle the amp draw for when the heater first starts up. I would go for a least a 500 watt hour power station for sure just because you'll find other uses for them while camping. If you plan on running a 12 volt fridge in the summer I'd get a 1,000 watt one. The diesel heaters run about 130 watts for about 3 minutes when they first start up then they go from about 10 watts on low to about 40-50 on high. Also get a carbon monoxide tester for your tent. They are cheap Chinese products and there is a chance that if one gasket fails you'll get exhaust fumes in the tent. No seriously it's a real possibility.
Cool tent! I have been going back and forth between a hot tent or my Kodiak with a diesel heater. Do you think the hot tent is worth the setup with the stove? I love the idea of a real wood fire (cannot beat the smell/ambiance), but the convenience of a diesel heater is hard to beat... Thanks for the great content - keep it coming!!
When I saw that battery, I knew that was the mistake. I figured you'd be lucky to get an hour of run time. You need either a large deep cycle, or a "solar generator" power pack. I hope another try with a better battery yields good results.
Sorry but I laughed when I seen that battery. I knew what was going to happen. I use a 100amp hour lithium battery and it will run the heater for over 2 days in my shanty.
Brett affleck with a nice surprise! And also not a great one either. At least the beers stayed cold. Cheers brother! 🍻
Gotta show the misses. Sh*t happens 🍻
I suffer from diesel heater anxiety. I’m afraid it’s going to die on me in the middle of the night
Haha just be ready!
What body of water is that? Thanks
Not every trip goes as planned! What’s the name of that seat cover / pad you have on your front seat?
Yea not everything goes the way you intend. Not sure… got it from Menards earlier this winter
Those batteries are good for a low-draw appliance, like a fishfinder. Not good for pumps and fans. I would recommend investing into a solar powerpack, like Bluetti or Jackery. Something 500wh +. I have the Jackery 1000 V2 and it is perfect for a 2-3 day trip (12v fridge, charging batteries, diesel heater). Solar can extend it to a week... Keep up the content from a fellow Michigander. You are giving my son (12) and me a lot of ideas. 🙂
Yea I kind of figured that after the fact… definitely need to invest in one of those powerpacks! Thanks and glad you and your son enjoy the videos
What shovel is on your truck? Looking for something small and weatherproof...
Atlas is the best girl!
She really is 😊
I’ve had bad luck with the Cabala’s-labeled batteries as well. The more you need them the less-likely they are to work.
Yeah, I think they’re meant for something a lot smaller than this diesel heater
La tenda sembrava piccola .ma vedo che é spaziosa la neve é alta.li.che posto ????
Hey man, right on. Thanks for the video. I'll be in N.C. this summer taking ww lessons in Bryson City. What electronics/apps are you using to find campsites? Im thinking about a Garmin 67i. However, the learning is steep & they are expensive. Any suggestions? Thanks again!
Very nice Dog
I love your Polish shovel/lawn rake; the only thing is you will deeply regret it when you get olde.
Good video. Best hot tent I have seen. Scads of room. Please do not feed your dog cooked meat. I see pancreatitis in my practice frequently, and 95% is from cooked meat. Egg is fine, but not with the grease. EVERY TIME u feed that greasy food you cause some pancreas insult. One time it will be bad, if not fatal. Dr M
How do I get the tent for free like you did?
It looks like that tent screams for a bigger cylinder stove.
I've experienced that hammock camping with heavy rain.. it's a lesson learned....
There are no NPAs (New People's Army) there, so it's not dangerous. The only scary thing is the wildlife, which is common. There are safe places in the Ph, but you have to pay to be safe. Btw do you just poop anywhere?
Funny intro. Cool video. Thanks for sharing.
really beautiful tent, and stove, we used to make them out of 55 or small gallon drums tho back in the hippie day. hope someone will donate or buy them for the folks stuck in the mountains near asheville now. cold in them mountains now. not for adventure, for survival.
my dream
❤
That video was a good time. The hot tent was luxurious! I would have needed some hash browns with breakfast. Guess that is why I am fat😩. Thanks for sharing.
Young man if you are interested look at the Nano stove from Firebox Stoves. I am not affiliated with them in any way. I bought one seven or eight years ago I use it alot and I love it. It folds down very small. It’s lightweight. It cooks great using a small to medium sized pot/pan. It made me sad seeing y’all eat your untoasted bagels with no eggs. I just found your channel, enjoyed the (sad 😃) video and I subscribed.
My brother uses a cast iron grate from a gas stove and sets it on his wood heater and then sets a skillet or pot on that so your skillet/pot isn't sitting directly on the wood heater.
A suggestion for you. Watch some forward stroke instructional videos. A good paddle stroke is achieved by rotating your torso. Very very little is achieved by pulling the paddle with your arms. Think the opposite of a train locomotive. The wheel goes round and round and the arm attached to the piston goes back and forth. Gotta sit up straight to achieve it. This way you are generating power with your big core muscles vs your scrawny arms.
Should have started with - great video. Thanks for the memories. Started paddling on the rivers “around” Chi-town; Wiscy and the mitten. Switch to the Appalachia in college when I got my whitewater boat and Cali after graduating. 500+ days of class 3-5+ whitewater, but still love those quiet rivers.
Great video
Do you worry about falling into stove or dog getting burnt or even the tent burning down?
I have never tried that cheese and jam, but I’m definitely trying it now!
You’re not alone. You have a dog.
This guy looks exactly like that punk that just divorced J Lo
🤣 I get that a lot! I would’ve divorced her too because she dated diddy
Th great video. Winter camping is a blast. One question I keep wondering about is the wood stove and sparks on the tent. Any suggestions or problems?
I watched this whole trip! Thanks for filming it. I wanna paddle the holy waters section (dropping in grayling) with my dog this summer where do you recommend take out?
Been wanting to do a similar kayak camp trip. I'm assuming you went northbound on your hike to your truck. Where did you park at? BTW: Love your videos!
Cool tent and chair... nice hat- Go Lions!
Por fin alguien inteligente armaste la carpa bajo la proteccion de los arboles y evitaste que se cargara de nieve ,un pequeño inconveniente con la ramita pero el resultado ecxelente, hermosa carpa
Love that you share with your pup!
First time viewer here. I was amazed at how mean and stupidly obnoxious some of the comments on your video are. More than many other channels I’ve seen. Sorry you have to deal with all of that. Cool tent by the way.
Thanks and yea I think most of these people either don’t camp and are confused or are jealous I actually do it instead of just talking about doing it. I find it amusing tho haha
Y para que te llevas a la garra de perro ¿que no estaría mejor llevarte a tu pareja u otro humano en vez del perro, con tu pareja puedes hacer cosas que con tu perro no puedes
The question should be why wouldn’t I take my dog. Loves the outdoors, doesn’t complain and is game for anything I want to do. Plus most people won’t even go outside in the winter let alone go camping
That was so epic!
It was an amazing journey! Highly recommend
any tent you have to tie down so it doesnt get blown away by a gust of wind is a failure!!!!
What kind of tent doesn’t blow away if it’s not tied down in strong wind? Geniunley curious. Also this tents tie downs are necessary to structure and create the tents shape. I think you’re confused on the difference between a tent and hard structure like a cabin, trailer, or a shelter made of wood/hard material
Enjoy and keep safe my friend 😊❤
Thank you and will do!
@AtlasAdventures you're welcome
Excellent video!😍
Thx! Glad you liked it!
