I found it outright interesting to show & tell. As shops, big companies & manufactures do “ALL” R&D with design like a cam behind closed doors. At GM, they may have 12 guys w/50” monitors & ergonomic keyboards design code, cams or keys. The door opens, their screens go black. They don’t come on unless one person punches code in a keypad. This was out & out great.
Glad u enjoyed it!
Hello Danial, watching from Australia, love your video's Sir!! Could you give me some advice please, I just purchased a new Hydraulic Roller cam for my BBF, 259/266@.050, .687 .687. It is a 1050 billet. Can I use the Ford Roller Cam Bearings? It says I must use a 8620 Steel Camshaft. Can I get my Journals Heat Treated to run these bearings? Or will it chew up my camshaft?
@riverstonerodnresto 1050 is a very low carbon steel, not a good choice for a performance camshaft, it's as hard as it will ever get now, idk of it will runn on roller bearings, but maybe, 5150 or 8660 would have been better
@PowellCams thanks for the reply Danial
Great job Daniel.
Thank you!!
This challenge has actually been a real eye opener, because when you look at the specs and hear from NK what they did with their cam, it all makes sense. The engine had more than enough intake, so by focusing on the exhaust side events, that became the difference maker. Like you said, the most important parts of the cam is intake closing and exhaust opening, how they overlap, based on the way the head with it's stuff flows. It's little surprise that the people that experiment with that particular setup won that challenge. Frankly this opens up a huge insight into selecting cams and how timing valve and piston events are THE main determining factor, and are application dependent, everything else is just details.
Exactly! 💯
Thank you
You're welcome
I think you did a great job! 9th is good! I love your commentary. You are an "eloquent" hillbilly in my book, son. I can't wait to see the new grinder in action.
I appreciate that! 💯
I bought an ls cam from a reputable cam co. I had to advance the thing 1 tooth to even get it to a spot so it could be degreed. Ive nevet seen anything like it. I will send it back to see what they have to say.
Crazy
Erics cam doctor is showing some very disturbing results as in very 3:16 poorly ground cams.
Pretty common unfortunately
Hi, I am sure the majority of listeners are jumping up and down over the "magic" of the "best cam" I think, lost in the details are things like 1, the cam grinder MAKING WHAT WAS ODERED! and B, MAKING all the lobes identical. For me those were the 2 wtf moments. The 5? hp. and omg 7? ft.lbs. of torque difference is kind of BS. I was disappointed he did not pull from 3000 rpm. To me THAT is why he had the 1 3/4 headers. Jere Stahl had a "formula". He based the pipe dia. on the hp. I remember tests from yrs 50? lol where the small tube did not fall off until 6000? rpm. A great example of that were the late 60s bbc. A 1 7/8 tube on a 396/375 ran much better than a 2 pipe.( both hooker headers) I should have bought eric's data before the testing. I will wait until the dust settles and get everything. I would be shocked if the 2 inch pipe made more power/ torque at 4000 rpm? AND I bet that your cam with less overlap- (omg I am down 4 hp! How can I drive my car lol) will be much more drivable- but maybe I am all wrong?
I need some clarification . Traditionally , a cam with an extended exhaust duration was referred to as a ' Blower Cam ' . is that correct , or does my memory fail me again ?
It's common to have extra exh duration
You're pretty cool man, enjoy your enthusiasm to succeed.. 700 hoarse pump fuel windsor would be awesome and a challenge! Would take a serious engine.. I have a 408w pump fuel (only just, it has 225psi cyl pressure) 242/252 hyd rol makes 562ft/lbs 569hp with an air gap duel plane. I havnt seen or heard of any make this kind of power with a duel plane, if anyone has let us know
Absolutely 💯
I am needing a jet boat cam, too. Probably before the Pontiac. SBC 355 , dry exhaust , 9.5:1, aluminum heads (likely stock port enforcers) , performer rpm, 1 5/8 primary, 3.5” collector header 13” . Thinking 272/282 . 500-.510 lift 110 lsa range, but not against a suggestion. Not scared to bump the compression up a shade but trying to keep it 90 oct safe.
Shoot me a email Powellmachineinc@gmail.com
If we could get 0.006, .050 and .200 numbers for all these cams , that would be awesome!
I asked, only a few would agree to provide that information
Hell of a job 💪 honestly the biggest takeaway for me, is the small difference between the top and bottom.
@@mhardy216 definitely
I did try to tell you the carb is a bit small and numbers would be close to each other........ Did you see that the way different German cam made the most at 4000 ... could have been just load in but was interesting because it's so different ..... Intensity im sure came into play too and just not enough information on the cam card to tell ..... Kinda looks to me like it came down to intake closing event and overlap ... But also top ones pushed the lift more ... Be interesting to see what you see in all this ... I wish you had done the cam dr work because it was kinda odd
@@scotthatch4548 evc won that deal 💯
I too was struck by how close the majority of cams were when I compared the different dyno-runs. In any case, your cam obviously performed well by any performance metric. Keep up the great videos!
Ty 😊
High five to you and kudos to your 70yr old grinder. It must still be in excellent condition.
Pretty cool to see people involved in the cam deal r&d drives progress and gets better parts out there well done .👍
Absolutely
I think it's a win for everyone because of the data!
Definitely
I've been looking for someone to learn from about cams ,valve train and rotating assemblies. I believe you are the one. Thank you....
Brian Salter really good too and they both are near to each other
Glad to help
I’ve watched Bobby from NK Performance’s post about his cam and it interesting to hear how he came up with the specs and why. The greatest part of this cam challenge is that everyone can learn from the results.
Absolutely
I donated to the cam challenge and found the info great one of the cams sent in had less exhaust than intake duration at .050 which I thought was gonna be awful but it did ok , not great but held its own that was bizarre but honestly y’all did great and I wonder what would happen if the cams were all degreed to the suggested icl because I would bet some were close and some not
Reverse split, never once have I seen it make power
Absolutely enjoy your channel I’m learning allot here , and I thought I was fairly knowledgeable but I’ve learned something everytime I watch the channel can’t wait to get the cam I ordered for the 27 Roadster
Great to hear!, ty for the business!
Very impressive brother!! Congratulations
Thanks a lot!
I always count my big toe as 2 since it is so big! Was wondering why my bank account was off! 🤔
Lol
You don't have to have the CNC grinder to do a good job it's the operator💪 and be will to do a good job.
Absolutely Gerald!! Thank you sir!
That pretty dam good you finished in the top half i mean that's pretty cool i was thinking to if you has just many slightly more lift maybe would of helped you more because top guy almost max out his lift but anyways yeah he ddi mentioned the exhaust duration being and i noticed that to but still you did great and you were the guy i picked to root for because you know Eric Weingartner said pick someone amd i didn't know none of you guys really except i saw a couple of your video before the challenge and 1 or 2 of Salter racing engine and that's about it before the challenge so congrats to you both and other who was involved in the challenge and i learned myself more because all these
Absolutely 💯, ty!!
If you hadn't seen NK talking about his cam- ua-cam.com/video/sYKlmSn_gQo/v-deo.html
Yes, I just seen it! Good stuff
I have a motor program (pipePRO) I play with a bit and have noticed I need to change up the cam specs a lot to see real differences. Mostly Harley motors I'm looking at so maybe that has something to do with it.
You did great Daniel!
Thank you!
Top 10 are all winners. Nicely done and Congrats.
We appreciate that 🙏
@@PowellCamsAppreciate you! Always brother
Thanks..Can't wait for the next one...
Absolutely 💯
I agree with you 100% I'm thinking the same way.
Definitely
I think you did a great job Daniel.
We try hard!
You did not do bad at all! Look up Bumpstick Bobby ('s) video on how he selected the lobes/events. Before this contest was offered he had extensively tested on one LS engine making cam changes using one dyno. I believe while the contest was being livestreamed he mentioned he picked lobes that were created 26+ years ago. We have to give him credit for making the right choices taking compression, gas choice, head flow, valve weight, exhaust & CI into account.. So yes you did good. He has put the winning cam up for purchase on his site if you want to take a good hard look at it. You could set an LS up with the gauges to possibly get a more accurate figure of the events after deflection losses & make changes as you wish. Seeing as you have a cam grinder & a dyno I'd say that's a pretty good situation. But hey, you did win the beard & guns shootout 👍
Lol, ty 😊 🙏
get that Dyno going! would be cool to see Powell Machine host one of these!
Definitely
i don't understand half of what you talk about but watch because the way you always seem to see the positive in everything you face is very inspiring............
We appreciate that 🙏
Might be the difference between accepted knowledge, and doing something outside of it. Really, there should be a string of cams within a couple horsepower, and a couple ft-lbs. Why? Because when basic concepts of how to do something become cemented among the best, everyone with this knowledge should be trying to produce a result with the same math. Therefore, most results should be similar.
Correct
As Eric said, you beat everybody that didn't enter.
Facts
That's how the hobby/engines, leap forward. Competitions like this.
Absolutely
I know NK specializes in LS and some SBF, but primarily LS so that guy knows LS like the back of his hand. Man, that you did that well being the small family shop who figured out this cam stuff from scratch is awesome. The fact that everyone in the middle were so close gives me even more confidence in just you being my first go-to for cams. Have a cam on order from you already and see no reason to go anywhere else. 👍🤘
I appreciate that! TY
I hope you know it really is Cam Motion
@racerd9669 yeah, I know he works for Cam Motion and his Cam was ground there, but he said it's all his personal specs. Cam Motion didn't design his Cam. I have no reason to doubt him.
Congratulations
Ty
Wow! 20 some of the best cam "gurus" head to head/grind to grind! Amazing...
No doubt!
Way to go, Daniel, I had a strong feeling you would do well!
We really appreciate that 💯
You put a lot of effort into teaching and explaining everything. I’ve never had someone answer a question so fast on an off day. I understand working for yourself though, no time off.
I appreciate that!
Exactly at 9:00 minutes
💯
In the end. Everyone wins. We got massive amounts of data. Cam grinders learned what works IRL versus theory. Best of luck in the next one.
Indeed, we are all winners. I said as much on Eric's video.
Absolutely
I look forward to the analysis video. Hopefully people will give you their data. I've always been big on analysis, you can't fix things or improve things until you understand how the things work. In the automotive world there're lots of theories about stuff but very few people ever want to back up the theory with actual testing and analysis of what they got right and what they got wrong.
Agreed 👍
Love the channel, Daniel. I'm 68 years old and am still learning from people like yourself. I run an LS in a boat, so the cam challenge was extremely interesting. All of the competitors acted like professionals! So refreshing!
Absolutely 💯
Look forward to more cam challenge analysis
