Next time you visit places like Irbene, consider bringing a small FPV drone with decent video capability. It would be neat to see the inside…safely. Thanks for another great video!
All I was thinking about was "GEIGER COUNTER!" Then you talked about telescope tours and I was relieved. Too bad these buildings can't be restored and used, I bet they have albestos everywhere.
It's very interesting. I lived in such cities a long time ago during my military service in the Soviet Union and I know very well the sad life that went on inside.
For those wondering, the name of this place is more accurately pronounced with initial stress, that is: IR-be-ne (and both of the "e"s approximately as the"e" in "sovjet").
9:00 "middle of nowhere" -- earlier you said that there is no cell phone coverage. This is probably BECAUSE of the antenna field (Openstreetmap shows 6 antennas). The idea is that there isn't any radio interference when they try to receive extremely weak signals from the skies, like the radio emission of some distant galaxy.
Useless place to visit if you're interested in the radiotelescope. The entrance was locked every time I visited. Nice to see some Latvia on this channel, though. It's a wonderful and beautiful country and deserves all the attention.
Der Bre hat doch tatsächlich das Rückgrat kein "OMG You won't believe what we found in this ABANDONED town!"-brainrot-video zu machen. Stattdessen mit typisch deutscher Sachlichkeit präsentiert ;). Ehrenmann.
There is another town like this in Latvia too, which was not publically known, part of a soviet military installation, not too far from Lithuanian Border. Town name is: Skrunda-1. However, a military training ground now.
10:44 "Teufelsberg" was also used for electronic intelligence. Meaning that they received signals e.g. from radio links for telephone communications. Or from embassies. Or military radio. Or emissions of anti-air systems (like the radar, but also data communications from the flight tracking to the rocket launchers). It was also used for air traffic control, at least for US machines crossing over the GDR. Satellite communication on the Teufelsberg was more of an afterthought, not it's purpose.
7:40 "looks like a well" ... or the -- now fulled up -- escape from a Bunker system. If the purpose of Irbene was in some way military (e.g. for satellite communications, over-the-horizont radar etc), then there are almost certainly bunkers / underground shelters there. And they need exhausts, events, escape paths etc
I find the way you describe everything about the building as “ugly” (negative negative negative) quite hilarious In the 1970-90s which European county had the unlimited money to build 19th century style romanticism? No-one! For many ex Soviet countries, it seems that part of psychological coping, is pretending that only Soviets built “horrible” high rise buildings! Would you rather people slept in tents? Homelessness? Wealth inequality? People forget that the post ww2 era was the Cold War! The Soviets and the “west” were all doing similar things! Secret satellites to spy on “enemies”… stop having such an immature view of the world and history! Seriously! Anyway… fascinating topic! Thanks for telling us about Irbene. Speaking from the UK: irbene looks nicer than many affordable housing built in the UK during the 70-90s! And even in the abandoned state: it looks better than most working class estates riddled with lack of investment and high crime statistics
Yes, we built a load of ugly estates in the 60s and 70s but we didn't build them in the middle of the forest. Even so most of our 'working class' estates were actually well built and very spacious. In fact Soviet apartments were also built like this, but in reality several families shared kitchens and bathrooms. And get a grip! The point is this place 'didn't exist' in Communist times. Our idea of 'secret' is way apart from what the Soviets had.

Please don't stay away so long we missed you! 🇺🇸🤩
How many towns are like this in that area?

I though it was the Prora Holiday camp at first.

Reminds me of when i was in Chernobyl. Same kind of buildings and atmosphere only the nature took more over there

Exploring the insides of abandoned buildings is kind of the POINT
No cell service in Latvia? sounds barely believable. 5G might not work, but 4G, especially on LMT should be available
The parallells to the home world of the Disnet+ series Skeleton Crew" kids is striking.
