    What an interesting video! I have also been tempted to re-read some books that I read when I was younger that I don’t think I got the same appreciation out of as I would now that I have lived a little bit more in life. I also read “the catcher in the rye” in high school, but I remember liking it and being surprised that I liked it even though at this moment I can’t really remember what it was about. I also read “flowers in the attic” way too young, I was probably reading it at the same time you were in the early 90s lol. I have been tempted to re-read that one too, but I think my innocence prevented me from thinking about the horrors those kids psychologically went through from being locked in that attic for so long! I also read “wicked” over 10 years ago and I hadn’t seen the musical yet, so I didn’t know the story. I just remember thinking it was so strange and very, very different from what I thought it would be, but overall I kind of liked it. That would be one that I would like to reread as well. I also read a Cinderella retelling by the same author, which had very similar vibes and I kind of remember liking it, but also having a weird feeling about that one too. The tone of his books is just so odd. It’s interesting how we can experience books differently during different phases of our lives!

      It really is crazy how our feelings can change and I'm sometimes nervous about re-reading favorites because I don't want to fall out of love of my favorite stories! But then on the flip side, what if I don't re-read and I miss out on something fantastic that I didn't catch before?! And yes, you and I were way too young to be reading Flowers in the Attic in the 90s. 😂

    Shannon, I am so thrilled that you enjoyed Mill on the Floss - the one George Eliot book that seems to get the most hate around here. I am a bit of a George Eliot fanatic and I rank that number 2 on my list (just below the masterpiece Daniel Deronda). I love that we both gave lengthy reviews of the novel, yet we talked about very different things - I think the only overlap in our reviews was the humor brought by the meddling aunts and the autobiographical influences in the story - it just demonstrates what a complex novel this is. What is the next George Eliot novel that you want to tackle? Thank you for the video.

      @@JosephFrancisBurton The Aunts are so funny and really are important to the story! One thing I didn’t talk about which was so interesting was the constant comparisons of people to animals. This was published just after Darwin’s findings and had rocked everyone’s world and I found myself underlining every time Maggie was compared to an animal (Shetland pony, etc). There was SO much to explore! I think next I’m reading Silas Marner I’ve read both Middlemarch and Daniel Deronda but it’s been so long that they are both due for a re-read.

    You didn't understand Catcher in the Rye because you're not 14 years old. I read it in high school and it was ok, with some relatable elements. I read it 50 years later and had the same reaction as you did--spoiled brat whines for way too many pages. The book I hated in freshman year of high school was The Scarlet Letter. Many years (40?) later I read a different Hawthorne novel and enjoyed it, so I tried Hester Prynne again and loved it. I think it is wasted on high school kids--the language & themes are too complex and mature for teens to really appreciate.

    • @ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged

      I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who didn't find The Catcher in the Rye profound! 😀 The Scarlet Letter is due for a re-read for me and I totally agree with you that a lot of literature taught in schools is too complex and mature for teenagers. But then I wonder if they'll ever be read if they aren't introduced in schools where at least a couple of kids may be able to somewhat grasp them. I don't know! I guess there isn't a good answer 🤷‍♀️. Thank you so much for watching!

    Great video, a re-read of Wicked may work - personally I didn't even know there was a book, nor movie :p. It's interesting to see how different school systems had different mandatory reading. I had to read 1984 and Animal Farm in High School; and, reading them again as an adult, I truly appreciated them much more. Other books I'd like to re-read from High School are The Glass Menagerie, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Lord of the Flies. I will still stay away from Dickens though :)

    I'm Australian and I wasn't even aware that American Psycho was a banned book! It is only banned in the State of Queensland (which is like American's Florida). I just checked online and the online bookshops say "Not for sale in Queensland", I'm surprised and not surprised. There isn't a copy in my local library but there are 4 copies of Bret Easton Ellis other works. 35:10, I know I would have had the same thoughts you’re having about that topic! I find myself having a hard time overlooking that type of situation or trope within books as well and I’m sure I do the same thing that you do by putting the modern sensibilities onto these types of things, but it is just such a exhausting situation to think about. Great wrap ups! I definitely think you got a lot of reading done compared to what I probably would have done in the same amount of time. :-) I remember reading The Bell Jar back in my 20s and I liked it despite it’s melancholy tone and I remember feeling like I had a lot to think about when I was done reading it. I definitely should try rereading this eventually. I hope you enjoy it! Loved seeing the bookstores you visited and I’ll be looking forward to your upcoming haul video as well and really enjoyed this vlog style video! 😊

      Thanks so much! I enjoyed doing the vlog style video and just wish I had more time to do more of them. Just fitting in a regular 'talking head' video is hard enough! So, I finished The Bell Jar and I'm not sure how I feel about it. I'm wondering if I had read it in my 20s it would have been more profound for me? That being said, last night when I was going back to review and write down all of the passages I marked, I found myself changing my mind slightly in its favor. Maybe I just need a little more time to sit with it and explore its themes.

      @@ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged I hear you with the lack of time! I read The Bell Jar so long ago, to be honest, I don’t remember if I liked it or not! It is interesting though to think about how different books impact us based on how old we are when we read them. I recently read Rebecca this year and liked it, but I feel like I really would’ve liked it if I was closer to the age of the heroine when I read it as I would’ve been able to relate to her insecurities a lot more. I’ll be interested in your thoughts on The Bell Jar when you review it!

    A good and informative video, but the wrap up was a bit dishonest. While queer content was cited, yes, 10 out of 10 books were challenged for containing sexually explicit material. If you're looking for a trend it would be that parents/educators do not want a strange adult "teaching" their children about sex. It is entirely possible to write queer characters without being explicit, just like it's entirely possible to write straight characters without being explicit. Watched and subbed because I'm interested in seeing more of your content.

    • @ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged
      @ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged 27 днів тому

      Hi! Thanks for pointing out my omission and I promise it wasn't dishonesty. I was looking at the list for the first time as I filmed and I filmed in one take so the queer element was the first thing that I noticed as I was viewing the list. I plan on doing this again next year and I will be better about looking at the list ahead of time and compiling thoughts. I am 100% understanding of parents wanting to control the flow of information to their kids and I'm not as squiffy about challenges to things being taught in schools. Unfortunately, the ALA doesn't specify school challenges vs. public library challenges (which I do not agree with at all) and I do believe I mentioned that I am sympathetic with parents. So much so, I have a video coming out next month about a few books that are/have been taught in schools and I just can't understand why. That being said, I also know that some parents will not give their kids the information (or will make their queer kids feel bad about themselves) and I think back to growing up in the 80s/90s when my queer friends and family had no resources and nothing to make them feel seen and comforted. I agree with you that being sexually explicit is not always necessary and my personal preference in reading fiction is to not have gratuitous sexual scenes. Do I think any book on this list absolutely needs to be on a school curriculum? No, but I do not believe they should be removed from stores or public libraries. I'll be sure to make that distinction in the future. Thanks so much for watching and subscribing!

    Another Country is my favorite Baldwin, but it has imperfections. Giovanni’s Room has what I think is one of the most beautiful pieces of descriptive writing I’ve ever read. If Beale Street could talk is excellent. Actually I can’t think of anything by Baldwin or don’t like.

      I think you are supposed to think those things about Ethan. Not that he gets what he deserves, but he is a grown man and he could have, even in the time, chosen differently. But that would have required a kind of courage Ethan didn’t have. Even in the end he lacked the courage to go through with things.

These are books written with teens in mind in a way that they are able to understand and make them feel seen, heard, and part of a community. Thanks so much for watching! I know this is a book review, but since you brought it up, don’t forget there are younger women preying on older men for their money

    • @ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged
      @ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged Місяць тому

      Hi! If we are talking about our modern times, then yes, there are absolutely mercenary young women after older men for money; however, the power dynamics are still in the favor of the man, both financially and in age/experience. If we are talking about Bronte's time period, marriage was a financial deal. Women were forced to marry for money because it was literally the only way they could survive because women literally had zero rights under coverture. Now, was I putting my modern sensibilities on to a not-so-modern situation? Yes. Older men and very young women were not always frowned upon yet still we have the same issue of power dynamics and all were in favor of men. That should have been the point I made. Thanks so much for watching!

    I love Catcher, but Franny and Zooey is even better! You can't force yourself to get it I don't think? You either understand Holden, or you don't. I feel the same way about Never let me go as you do about Catcher. I actually gave it 1 star on goodreads, because it made me mad! But I do want to try again someday. I have liked Klara and the sun & Remains of the day. I am also scared of the books you don't want to read! But I always wonder if I'm missing out.....another I would add is Blood Meridian by Cormac M. They say it's his masterpiece, but Also that it's bloody gross! Farrah recommended your channel, Yay!

    This was great! I really appreciate seeing a list of the top 10. I just read All Boys Aren’t Blue and loved it. The audio was great and the author seemed like such a caring person who really wanted to help other young Black, queer people find comfort and acceptance in everything they were feeling. I really liked it. I also read Gender Queer and The Blue Eye and loved both of those too. It makes me so sad that books with queer content are getting such hate. If anything, they promote more understanding and compassion and are such a valuable resource for the queer community. I don’t feel like they are trying to traumatize anyone. People should have access to these if they want to read them. Yes, I can see not wanting them some of them in school, especially since the cover is of Gender Queer can give off middle school vibes, but to ban them from the public library is awful. Great video, I really enjoyed it now have a good list of more that I want to read!

    Good grief, is there a book that the Soviet Union did _not_ ban? I recently read Solzhenitsyn's _Cancer Ward_ , very interesting novel and probably still banned there HAHA. The rationale you gave for the banning of Scarlet Letter is hilarious. I never knew Grapes of Wrath was once banned in Kern County, but I can see why landowners who need cheap labor would want in banned HAHA. Clockwork Orange banned from school ciricula and school libraries - I mean I get that one, I would not let my kids watch that movie when they were younger, I think age appropriate stuff gets a pass there is R ratings on movies for a reason. Same with American Psycho, kids don't need to watch that movie why should they read that book? I have tons of books on my shelf that are not age appropriate for kids, yeah that stuff gets a pass from me. I like how you broke up the banned stuff in categories - the political banning stuff is so ridiculous I mean has that ever worked for any reason? I am finishing up my own banned book - Noli Me Tangere, once banned in Philippines, now _required_ reading in Philippine school cirricula HAHA - OK since you asked for it 📖 thank you for the very interesting video.

    • @ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged
      @ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged Місяць тому

      I am always so TORN on those books that are just so not appropriate for kids. I don't ever want to censor but I also think there is no reason to be subjecting kids to certain things so early. I'm a full grown woman and I still balk at picking up Lolita and I don't know if I'd ever want to force a young girl to read that before she was ready. Then you have the opposite end of the spectrum where sometimes books are removed that kids should be exposed to, especially as we have more representation in books these days. Where do we draw the line? I don't know! The good thing for me is that I don't have any children so I don't have to be involved in these decisions. Thank you so much for watching and good luck with Noli Me Tangere! p.s. I spy you have a video on The Mill on the Floss and I just this afternoon finished a re-read of it and it wrecked me (ugly crying and all). When I gather myself, I'll be checking it out. 😀
