    If I add a lot more epsom salt will it speed up the process

    • @ourlifesimplified
      @ourlifesimplified 2 місяці тому

      I would think so... I have repurposed these pots with faux plants and some of them I actually added soil and added live plants I germinated... placed them outside in a more shaded spot and that seemed to speed up the process maybe due to watering and allowing to dry out, and repeating, then the salt is left behind and more pronounced? The first time i saw this happen, it was by chance. I initially had soil and live plants in them that I would water with epsom salt water from time to time and it appeared... I hope that helped.

      @@ourlifesimplified I have limited experience. I've heard exterior outdoor deck paint or plain exterior house paint is probably the best the best performing but may be the aesthetically least appealing. I've heard people say use an appropriate stain and oil oil oil and oil. I will try oil on a plank shelf this year. Last year I saw the finish on my poly coated benches deteriorated to bare wood in 1 year. This year I'm trying deck paint I got for $4 a gallon on tables and planks for planter shelves

    • @ourlifesimplified
      @ourlifesimplified 2 місяці тому

      @@maxpolaris99 hey... thank you for your response. There is a difference between 'poly' vs 'spar' urethanes ... Todd usually advises me on which might work best depending on the project I'm working on. Todd used to refurbish wood boats when he was in college (the expensive ones) and Spar Urethane is what was used due to its waterproof properties. Now I do think there might be a difference, as in a 'marine grade' vs a regular? But I will keep you posted on how well the Spar Urethane holds up to the elements :)

      We have 100s of trees on property.. leaves were all green, so we figured we would wait until the leaves either turned brown or didn't grow in the spring. And it wasn't next to our house. How do you care for the hydrangeas at the end of the season?

    • @ourlifesimplified
      @ourlifesimplified 3 місяці тому

      Depending on the year. I noticed I can cut back my Anabell (I think that is what the white hydrangeas are called), and they grow back bigger. The other 3 hydrangeas that turn color depending on the acidity level, I cut back 2 yrs ago. They're taking a little longer to come back in terms of flowering, but I still get some. I also fertilize them (early spring) with hydrangea food (to increase acidity because i love the blues) and epsom salt.

      Thank you for your feedback.... I was trying to get the baby chicks back to their brooder box w/ heating plate as they need to be around 95 degrees their 1st week, so I apologize for moving too quickly. Around the 1:20 mark I show pics of the info I gathered showing the difference between males and females, to try to compare what I was looking at on the baby chicks. And it ended up being 5 males and 2 females lol. I included that video towards the end of another video (I'll have to try to find it). This was my first time sexing baby chicks, and I think it really needs to be done within the first 2 or 3 days after hatch. And as mentioned in the video and notes, it depends on the breed of bird too. wing-sexing isn't 100% reliable based on info I read.

    That is the skin of a timber rattler, probably attracted to the wood chips. I’d start wearing snake proof boots in the yard. Timber rattlers have a nasty bite and 2 inch fangs. Be careful! They often stay in same area once they’ve identified what they consider their territory. The snake skin indicates the snake is living nearby.

    Get pure wood ash from a Barbecue place and mix into the soil. Make sure NO lighting additives were added to the wood. NO lighter fuel, gasoline, kerosene or anything else. Your plants will grow 3X's better than with used coffee grounds or egg shells. Mix 1 ash to 3 soil. Your Welcomed 🫡

      @ourlifesimplified 4 місяці тому

      I will definitely try that... I do add other things too. Like my chickens' poo, compost, shredded leaves, etc... in the fall and again weeks before planting... then I add epsom salt, egg shells, coffee grounds at time of planting and during planting season... I do have a fire pit and was thinking about adding the ash from that as I've heard to do that. I will experiment with this and place on half of my garden to compare the difference!! Thank you for the suggestion!

    • @TheNester.
      @TheNester. 4 місяці тому

      @ourlifesimplified My friend bought a couple of acres in Washington state and wanted to try his hand at gardening. He had cleared and burned quite a bit of dead trees and had a "rood" of ash. I told him to save it to mix with the virgin soil for his garden. He read up on organic gardening and did as I had suggested. His onions grew the size of large grapefruits and the zucchini was at least the length of his arm! If you notice places that have been destroyed by fire, have the most fertile land and grow the hardiest fruits and vegetables. Just a suggestion, if you want to add your mentioned items, egg shells, coffee grounds and chicken poo, make sure they're completely absorbed and dissolved into your compost for at least a year and you're turning and mixing during that time. Just a suggestion...

    • @ourlifesimplified

      @@TheNester. Thank you for your input! I will definitely try the ash this year... and yes.. the chicken poo, I added in the fall .. although I did add earlier this spring when I cleaned out the coop. there have been several rains and tilling in. Hopefully that will be ok. I've done it in previous years and it seems to work well, but I've never planted a year past adding the poo... so not sure the difference. I have videos from last year's garden... it was like a jungle.. But I will definitely try ash this year. I'd like to do 1/2 the garden for comparison and document via video as a demonstration. Thank you!

    • @TheNester.
      @TheNester. 4 місяці тому

      @ourlifesimplified If you're going to mix in ash, DO NOT add Epsom Salt. That adds too much Magnesium to the soil and could kill your plants. Remember, soil does not naturally have Epsom Salt or Egg Shells, if it were me, I would eliminate them all together. Better to go All natural than to ruin the entire crop. Again, just a suggestion.

      Me too! I like to video my progress... I wish I would've done it years ago... I've planted over 70s trees and other plants over the years... it's amazing the transformation, but I don't have it documented on video 😕 ... but the transformation is amazing so far!

    Hey!! WE DIDN'T SEE THE "YOLK",either!!😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅. BTW, I actually was raised on a farm, producing what is now considered "free range". 350 @ one count, of laying hens/pullets/chicks/5 roosters. 3 10'x14' henhouses. We sold eggs/laying hens/ traded pullets@ grocery store/feed store/colored chicks for Easter/AND grandpa's hobby of Rooster trading. Simultaneously, we milked 4 cows/ raised/butchered 14 hogs per year, and gratefully fell asleep @9p.m. every night!!

      I bet you have stories to tell... lol. You sounded like you were busy busy... I often wondered what it would be like to live on a farm and work as a farmer for a living! I'd love to do more, but currently, my full-time 'day job' is telling myself to not do any more than what I'm doing, which everyone around me tells me, it's too much lol. I'm usually in bed by 8:30p now and wake up to my husband's 4:45 am alarm every day. So quick question... I've 'heard' what free range is, in terms of eggs that are sold at the grocery stores... but can you share what it actually is? just curious if it's the same as what I've heard.

      @@ourlifesimplified Sure! According to "official"(times vary somewhat) definition, ( it IS NOT OFFICIALLY a rule/more like a guide-line) chickens that are allowed to wander aimlessly OUTSIDE their cage/hen-,house/ pen/coop for a period of 5/5.5/6+ hours per day, foraging for natural food. ( BTW; I hope you learned to provide fine gravel/CRUSHED shells( both egg-shells/certain types of oyster(see I-Net) or certain calcium supplements). Tip: also for free-range; provide emergency shelter of chicken-wire/tarp to protect from hawks( federally protected, so ya can't legally blast'em,) and open access to roost to escape weasels/cats/etc. Hawks circle HIGH, they look small, and hit suddenly. So some sort of tent/umbrella type cover over corner of pen is helpful!! Hawks usually try only once, mebbee twice, and if unsuccessfull move on, for THAT DAY!! But once they got your chickens mapped out, they WILL RETURN!! Weasel-proof your hen house w/aluminum, or sturdy plastic siding, type used for under-pinning on mobile homes, vertically 5 ft high(+8" into ground) Keep door clearances TIGHT. Keep ventilation above 5ft. Chicks need less O2, more heat. Hens need more O2/ less heat. Cool air dropping will warm for chicks/hot air rising will ventilate out. Other than that, ENJOY BREAKFAST!!

    Egg Foo Yung is super easy & soooo good. You just need a few veggies or whatever you want to include. Soooo good. Also, key lime pie uses about 6 egg yolks.
