Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar
Marius Rustad - "Foam Blower" (Demo 2024)
I did this one a few years ago, but I lost it all in that computer crash so I figured I had to record another one just to have it. I'm getting old.. I forget.
Enjoy!

Here's an oldie, but a goodie! Way waaay back in the day when I was still young and talented I used to play every now and then with a couple of cats that were just amazing musicians (and still are to this day). Lars Erik Dahle (bass) and Hermund Nygård (drums) were a few years older than me and knew way more than me, but they still wanted to jam with me which was very cool. I learned so much by...

Just another jam I wrote. If I was doing an album, this would be on it.

Csharp '68 - aka fun with the UAFX Lion '68

Got inspired by the Universal Audio Lion ‘68 and made this. I think it showcases both the great sound of the pedal, but also how cool the series/parallell/preamp setup on the Tyler is. I’m running parallell with preamp (on 0) from the start and until halfway into the solo. (I think you can see me switch) The sound gets a little darker and slightly raunchier and the pedal responds nicely. I was ...

I don´t play much these days.. but melodies still enter my head at an hourly rate. Last night I just decided it was time to capture one of those snippets again and share.. maybe it brings someone a little joy.. maybe nobody cares.. either way.

Just another jam for all the rainbow and unicorn babies still partying beneath burning palms while contemplating their existence in empty pools at night. Written and performed by Marius Rustad. Album photo by Aran Mtnez on Unsplash.

Wrote it on Friday, recorded it on Saturday, took the day off on Sunday, mixed it on Monday and released it on Tuesday. Enjoy! I wrote and produced this jam, played guitar, bass & keys, programmed drums and mixed it. Photo and artwork also by me. Not flying solo by choice. This is great, I love the vibe and mood of the sound, sounds old-school fusion. 👏👏👏
@@maximusaugustus6823 Thanks for listening and commenting! 🌴🤘🏻🎸🍸
The Marshall the main amp tone?
@@fr201 Yes, iirc. There’s a slight chance it was the OD100, but I’m pretty sure it was the Marshall. I was using the Wilson Sparkling Blue as a boost into the Marshall (‘71 50w) at the time.

@@JohnnyCharles-ok1rd Thanks for listening and commenting! Well, I guess that lick in the intro is kinda Zappa’ish. He was also fond of weird time signatures so there is that as well… so yeah, sure! I’ll take it 😅🎸🤘🏻🍸🌴
What finish is that on the James Tyler? The track sounds great
@@chadgarrett7069 Thanks! The finish is a one-off. I can’t remember what it ended up being called.. either marsa-shmear or HRI-shmear 👍🏻 It’s cool!

greatness as usual you monster---that Manpaste HD just sounds foolishly rich. for that clean is your distressor->TERC stereo out to pcm 70 circular on one side and spx micropitch on the other? reverb ? you have that faraway Tales shimmer texture nailed. i'm hitting the surf tomorrow brah---ALOHA!
@@mentoneman Aloha, my dude 🏄🤙🏻 Thank you, buddy! So the recipe for ultimate 🌈 and 🦄 schmo fest is: Tyler w/mid boost activated and pickups in parallell into some kind of preamp going DI into the Distressor -> TERC (splits to stereo) into CAE mixer and I have SPX micro pitch (in stereo) in Mix1 and that whole shebang feeds into Mix2 which has the PCM70. I chose to add reverb in post (Lexicon 224 UA Plugin), but you could use whatever really.. Hall at 2-3 seconds. I also add another delay in post. (Would usually be my PCM42s after coming out of the mixer, but those are in storage so had to rely on ITB) Have a sweet surfing session! 🌊🎸🍸🤘🏻🌴
@ Mahalo! is the spx just being fed by a dry split, or from one chorused side of the TERC’s spare send? how are those hot rails for vintage strat touchy feely clean stuff?
@ The SPX is seeing one of the sides of the TERC. I go stereo from the TERC into the mixer and use the EXP out from the mixer to feed the SPX which returns in Mix1. I feed the other EXP out into a reverb which also returns in Mix1. (I usually use the MPX1 for this, but because of space restrictions I have the SE70 on hand atm. Rarely use it tho)
@ I would rather opt for a vintage’ish strat with some more traditional pickups if I was going for a pure strat tone, but I can get pretty close with the hot stacks in parallel and the tone knob rolled down a bit.
@ you’ve been top dawg in my book when it comes to capturing the true TSC clean and dirty magic ever since you got the TERC🫡
Killer tune. As expected. Another one to add to the UA-cam Music playlist and listen to on the way to work tomorrow in Sydney, Australia. Yep, global air time.
@@mikebellleisure Thank you! Glad you like it. Enjoy your flight! 🌴🎸🤘🏻🍸
Great stuff, Marsa. Your songwriting is killer and the Strat tones with the Hot Stacks is epic

OMG, that was an incredible and inspiring track to listen to! I wish I was a fly on the wall in that session to watch the magic happen.
@@n0nyabznss Thank you so much! Glad you like it. I’m not sure the role as fly on the wall would be as interesting as you think 😅 I have to work 90% of the time with headphones, but the scent of pure frustration would linger in the room and the intoxicating sounds of a billion mouse clicks would undoubtedly be soothing 🤣🤣🤣 Thanks again! 🎸🤘🏻🌴🍸
Super pleasant tune! Would be cool to see you take a crack at some other genre like 70's rock, thrashmetal or even grunge ..😉 I'm sure the result would be stellar🙌
@@roybratli Thanks! I have done some stuff in the past and I continue to record lots of different musical styles, but I don’t share everything. I don’t sing much anymore either.. it’s just too much stuff to deal with 😅 I can show you a recent jam on the side and maybe share some stuff here as well at some point. Thanks again, buddy!

Even more impressive than the great guitar playing is that drum programming! How on earth do you get such intricate patterns and a mostly human feel? What software do you use mainly for that? Sequencer and Slate or EZ Drummer and just super smart programming chops?
@@brigi7020 Thank you! I use Toontrack Superior drummer for the sounds and I have a library of midi files that I use as inspiration and just tweak’em till it works. It’s very nice to have midi files that were played by humans so you don’t have to manually edit every single hi hat velocity in order to get a more natural feel. I do spend a lot of time (trying) to get the drums right. A few years ago I knew very little about drums, so it’s been a steep curve 😅 Now I’ve come to really love drums and try to learn as much as possible, but I still can’t play drums and I don’t think like a drummer so it’s a struggle for sure, but I try 👍🏻 Thanks! 🎸🍸🌴🤘🏻🥁
@@marsa6 Awesome man! I play it all, so I certainly noticed how great that drumming was. And I'm definitely not at your level for guitar playing!

Loving the space on these new pieces youre doing, the parts have room to breathe and as a consequence the composition has more depth and power, you can hear individual things going on.. bravo dude, this is really really good, and like ive said before it just inspires me to go play.
@@gerryguitar Thank you so much, buddy! …and thanks for the great comment. I have always appreciated music which inhabits the qualities you are describing, but I have really struggled to incorporate it into my own stuff. Being both artist and producer is hard. With my artist hat on I have all these ideas and want to cram everything in! No melody left behind 🤪😅 Then I put on my producer hat, but can’t seem to curate what’s going on. I have gained some discipline tho and I believe I have learned a thing or two about mixing so I’m happy to hear that you feel I am improving. Still have a long way to go, but it’s all good.
I know I won't make much sense here but bare with me, all our heroes from that time love the jazz stuff from Miles Davis, Coltrane etc.. and for me it was all about implied stuff, the gaps and space inside a composition let your mind fill the musical void and you made your own very personal connection.. well I'm beginning to hear that same thing with your stuff and I really do want to hear more.. forgive my bourbon infused hangover insights . 😂
@@gerryguitar Keep ramblin’ brother! It’s all good. The spaces that I love are found in like.. noir jazz.. I’m a very melancholic dude.. but that anticipation which I hear and the gaps you mention.. the implied stuff.. letting stuff breathe.. that’s what creates an emotional reaction in me when it comes to that kinda music. I also find it in really good productions.. like the Joni Mitchell stuff with Klein (and Landau 😅) and when Daniel Lanois stops by.. like on the ‘87 Robbie Robertson album. But emotional reactions can be triggered by anything I guess.. I love all kinds of music that make me respond, but the more spacious and down beat stuff is what hits closest to home I guess.
Once again, great stuff !
