    Nice and syrupy. Reminds me of the TC 2290 delay, which had a chorus feature and optional 2k, 4K, 8k shelf. I’ve never owned a 2290 but there are emulations I’m used to. Do you often use a chorus or thickener? Seems the first time I notice. Are you experimenting with blocks? The options are quite deep. Really like it.

      @@jimshomestudio Jim your ears are well tuned! I shouldn't be surprised, though. Your mixes are always phenomenal. For this guitar, on my last two videos, I switched to a Texas Star clean on my FM3 which is based on a Mesa Lone Star. For this track specifically, I dialed up my stereo chorus to 30% and it's based on the Dytronics Songbird, I believe. I normally have it set to 11-12% for just a little extra thickness, but this backing track had a lot of harmony so I wanted my lead to harmonize as well. I also boosted the mix on my Aurora multi Delay, based on the Keeley Halo. I also changed the reverb from a studio to room with a little boost. Thanks for the comment! Always a pleasure hearing from you.

      @ i have a few chorus go to’s. There’s an old Eventide feature called Micropitch that was used on all the classics up through the 80s. A good example is Boston’s first album. That taught me how to hear chorus, which has that slight wandering pitch, up and down. When I was younger I had a Boss Dimension D, but I must’ve given that away. These days I have TC’s 1210 which is weird to conventional. And the Harmonizers these days have a good collection of Chorus, but you sometimes need to mute your dry signal path and just keep the chorus effect. Never understood that, and still like to keep my dry signal mixed in, which helps my recordings but dilutes the chorus effect so bad I end up putting a flanger plugin on the effects channel. Always interested in how it’s supposed to be done. Watched a LOT of programming Fractal videos from Gurtej Singh and Leon Todd, where the insane power of an AxeFX can be exploited in exactly the same way you would do in a studio with outboard. Sounds like you have your signal routed in series, where the effect is most prominent. Hope it’s a happy holiday for you and the fam Chad.

      On a side note, you’re familiar with Floyd Rose bridges? I just got my very first, and discovered a parts company called FU-Tone. I ordered some screws and bolts that are colored to match the guitar, so I want to ‘bling’ it out. That’s when I got paranoid that I could screw it all up and started watching the tech videos how (and how not to) set them up. Wish me luck, that’s my X mas gift to me this year.

    • @cbsaulren
      @cbsaulren 4 дні тому

      @@jimshomestudio Yeah, I've experimented with parallel signal paths but they never seem to meld quite right to my ears. I typically go input>compressor>drive>amp>cab>chorus>delay>reverb in series and just blend with the mix knobs on each block.

      @@dmnguitaristShit, no... UA-cam is weird with the recommendations but I'm def gonna check it out! I've been eyeing them since they announced. I was really wanting a SS fret Charvel. It's like the only down side to their MiM line (not really a big downside imo. Nickel feels nice and soft if that makes sense) but something about SS gives a guitar an indestructible feel and you basically never have to worry about fret wear unless you're crazy with bends and vibrato. I think I'm gonna sell off some of the guitars that I never play and put it towards a MJ.

      @cbsaulren Місяць тому

      @dmnguitarist As far as I know it's still stock. I've had several guitars with Floyds, but I've never heard of shimming them. What's the shim do?

    • @dmnguitarist
      @dmnguitarist Місяць тому

      @@cbsaulren Your Charvel has a 12"-16" compound radius fretboard. The Floyd Rose R3 nut it came with has a 12" radius. The saddles of the Floyd also have a 12" radius built in. So your strings are 12 to 12 but the fretboard flattens out underneath them. Your strings are not following that radius. You change the bridge radius by putting small shims under each saddle. It's tricky to get it just right because there's really one shim available from All-Parts. They list them as being anywhere from .16mm to .2mm thick but according to my measurements they're pretty consistently just under .18mm so I'm using a combo of shims and HVAC tape (3.9 mil HVAC tape is .1mm thick and made of aluminum) to get it just right. I put 2 shims under the E saddles and 1 shim with the HVAC tape under the B and A saddles. It's pretty good but still needs a little work. WAY WAY flatter feeling on the picking hand than stock. All my Floyd equipped Charvels also have brass blocks, Floyd Rose noiseless springs, Floyd Push -in bar and occasionally some other small details like titanium string inserts or stainless steel hardware.

    • @cbsaulren
      @cbsaulren Місяць тому

      @dmnguitarist oh ok! I always wondered about Floyd Roses and radii. I figured they were just a set radius but I didn't imagine they would be as curved as 12". I know on a compound your bridge should be closer to 18" radius. I might have to look into that! I've always just accepted that action was part of the compromise of having the stability of a Floyd. I used to hate FR but for some reason lately it's all I play. I have that $200 Jackson dinky with a junk FR on it but I still love it. I think I play it more than any other guitar including my Charvels because I leave it sit out everywhere with my wireless Nu-x for easy access. It plays just like my Charvel and I don't have to worry about leaving it out. I'll have to look into those shims

    A nostalgic track took me back to the early 80s, mid 80s era. When Charvel was new they were quickly embraced by the studio rats, and we heard tracks very close to this on pop radio, yacht rock. My parents were very much into Doobie Bros, Little River Band styles. I’m the youngest of 4 with another 4 step bros and sisters. They kept all the new Prog, pop going. I can sing every world of almost all REO Speedwagon song thanks to my sis. And drum out all the Rush songs they ever did prior to moving pictures. It’s refreshing to see someone revisit that era and quote sounds and grooves. Huge sigh of relief and it instills confidence and pride in the current generation of musicians. More people need to rock out like you Chad. Thanks for the music. 🤘😜🤘

      @@jimshomestudio what a prolific picture you paint of your memory with a few words, my friend! I don't think we're too dissimilar in age, as I can remember a few points from the decade, but it was also a great era for music! Melody has always been more interesting to me than the super shredders of that era, but don't get me wrong because I love to (try to) shred too! I feel like my guitar journey has taken me back to that era more than once to study the masters. And my childhood memories of 80s artists were probably the most formative in my affinity towards music. My mother's favorites were Journey, Chicago and Styx 😂 😂 REO was certainly in the mix.

      @@jimshomestudio generally what I do with backing tracks is run my FM3 as the main audio interface for Chrome, and then capture it via output to my 16ch mixer. If I play along with the track it'll come out as a single stereo ( two mono ) track and I can't do much in post to change the guitar levels. Not only that, I've noticed that for a while now I've been using a template that neglected to pan the two channels so I was getting mostly mono! This time, however, I played the entire backing track through my mixer to record it and then used a new pair of mono tracks for my guitar. Not only am I able to mix them a little better, I'm fairly certain the previous way I was recording had a slight delay between what I was hearing and what was tracking and since it wasn't accounting for the delay, I didn't quite get the synchronization I wanted. The only inserts I use on either track is an "all-in-one" compressor/limiter/multi band EQ (Vitamin from Waves) on which I do tend to cut a little from the low mid and high mid to keep any unwanted hiss or warble from getting through. I think I over compressed on the guitar a bit because there are a few instances where I think it's getting lost in the mix. I'll try giving them a little bit of a boost in that HMF (2k ish) range next time to give the guitar a bit more bite! Also I might've over accentuated the HF range. It was late and I was hearing that sparkle 😂😂

      @@jimshomestudioI couldn't be more happy with the FM3! It's just connected via USB. I could use it without the 16ch mixer if I wanted but my work station is set up for me to be able to record multiple instruments for when I'm composing. I really am grateful for the setup and I think fondly back to when I was 13-17yrs old and mixing tracks with the windows recording software by playing a track over the speakers and recording my playing over it. 😂 Technology has come a long way and it really is a golden era for music production.

      @@cbsaulren Leads can lean towards Freeform expression. Or think of a singer, and the way singers repeat words or phrases. They double or triple pulse on a note, so don’t feel obligated to trail down a scale fully. You can stop along the way and rest on a choice note or harmony note. The tremolo was nice to see, and hear you employ. All in all, I liked it. Haven’t had a Floyd in many years! 💪

      @@jimshomestudio I've had mixed feelings about Floyd for a while but the more setups I try, the more I realize if I want a tremolo, the FR is the most reliable. I'm also in the habit of using my hand on the bridge to vibrato and most of the time I don't even keep a tremolo arm attached. I don't want to sound like a stereotypical player by any means, but I definitely wish I could use more meaningful note choices. I've spent the last few years practicing scales forwards and backwards as well as different techniques that I never bothered to learn in the 20+ years before that. It's hard to break the habit of just running through the motions but it's a process and I'm trying to remember it'll take time. 😁

      @@cbsaulren please understand that I offer the suggestions to help and not to criticize what you have done here. Because we often self reflect. Floyd’s are the bomb. Nearest I have is the Ibanez Low Pro Edge 7 which really stays in tune. I just have to wrestle the 7. Wish I had a nice Floyd, don’t want to part with the money for an ESP. Still saving for that damn truck! When I’m tracking, I will play like wild for a few without hitting record. Then I start recording and the only thing that comes out is trash, so I refine and hear a melody part I like and record that. If it still sucks I have been known to punch in and replace bits. Bends, my nemesis. Rare that I challenge myself to record 3 minutes of perfection. I used to do that, but underwent a period of critical listening, where I edit out anything that stinks and rerun the effects after, cutting the dry mix and re building the wet hides flubs real well. After all is said and done, I listen for the part someone might be able to sing along to. And if I like the theme enough it’ll get rehashed somehow back into the song end or something. Kinda like you had at the end of this one. What I enjoyed so much is the exploration, you landed on something you liked. I liked it too.
