Big Sugar Trail | Foresthill, CA | China Wall Staging
This is a longer video format than I normally post, but I wanted to try and capture the new Big Sugar Trail. Thank you to all that worked over the last 4 years to make this happen. New trail in California - I'm sure it wasn't easy. Great trail with amazing views. Not technical at all and very fun sweeping switchbacks. Danny and I made it about 19-20 miles into the 25 mile out and back to Robinson Flat. Too much snow.

My first time in owning GoPro cameras since the 7 was released I found myself with my GoPro 10 only lasting roughly 2 mins before it would shut off so I resorted to my GoPro 9 on my windshield as film as much as I could. It rained pretty good from Foresthill to Auburn and I did my best to salvage what I could. We all met in Auburn to tackle 50 miles of dirt from Nevada City to Downieville in th...

I've had my Tiger 800 xc for 6 years and it's been a great bike but wanted something new and to have some added comfort. My must have on my next bike was cruise control and tubeless wheels. This Ibex 800 T comes with those two along with center stand, heated grips and seat, side protection and a nice 7inch tft display. I've only had one ride on it and this is that video. #cfmoto800 #advmotorcycle

We tried to make our way to Leek Spring Fire Lookout but still just a tad too much snow for the big bikes and a passenger to attempt so we made the best of it. Our goal was to have lunch at Kirkwood Inn but wasn't opened so we snacked at Kirkwood Store and headed back to Placerville. Total ride was 140 miles. #klr230 #dualsportadv #eldoradocounty #norcal

While at Giant Loop Rally we were able to do a road/dirt demo of the Harley Davidson Pan American. My road test bike had 710 miles on it and my dirt test had 104 miles on it. Awesome video! Wish I could have tagged along with you guys, but I had other plans😉 the conditions, weather, and tacos looked primo. My next day ride there was one I'll never forget
@@fasteddie500 Hell yeah! 300 te pro for the win!
Looks like an awesome ride! Dirt looked perfect and killer weather.
Gotta get you out there....
Hey thanks for your effort on this. Looks dynamite! I'll be wishing we get an early spring so I can take the full lenth of it. There is an other video of it that is from the "ribbon cutting day" on here. That terrific view off into the n fork canyon is what I'm talking about where back in the day we used to ride down to the river in different places on those 7 or 8 trails taking off the ridge line dropping to the bottom. A few of those I only did once. Like one time... down to the river on mumford bar trail, ride upstream on the john muir trail and come back out at sailor bar. It was not easy! The big sugar trail looks like a piece of cake.
I was thinking about you on this ride and your great stories. That must have been a chore back on those bikes and wish I could witness your rides. You sir are inspiring! Thanks for another great story!
@@LBRides There was a time when I was tough. That ride east I spoke of along the river was on a triumph 500 single! But it's you guys who, to me, seem to go everywhere these days. I can only think of a couple spots that I have not seen you go on that I once rode. We were pioneering back then. Thank you for doing this ride.🏍
Sorry for over doing it, but to add to that story... The john muir trail is 13 miles long along the river from mumford bar to sailor bar. We HAD to go out at sailor bar because there was no turning back. I remember asking a fisherman and his son when we got there, "is this sailor bar?" he said "yes, but how did you get here?" This trail was found on the tahoe national forest sevice map, but now only foot traffic and horesback
@@2manyrides Don't be I really enjoy reading / hearing about your stories and I know my buddies do too. I could listen all day. I never heard of sailor bar I'll have to look it up on a map and imagine you guys on two wheels figuring it out. No technology just man and machine back then. Amazing!
Really cool video! Thank you for sharing. Couple questions... You mentioned upgrading to the 500, how do you like it? I'm on a 09 Ktm 525 and want to upgrade. And what sort of camera/attachment do you use for video? Great quality and epic scenery. 🏔️🏍️
@@mattwallace8720 Thank you. I’ve had my 2015 Ktm 500 exc for a while but don’t normally use it for dirt biking if I’m loading up my truck (I ride it from home and hit the local trails) I like the 500 a lot it’s been a solid bike. I run DJI Action 4 camera mounted to chin mount.
Love to see a new trail in CA! I just checked out this area on onX, gotta make a trip out there soon maybe in the spring. Not sure how I never noticed this before but I just saw that you were the one who submitted the trial for Georgetown Trail 1! Appreciate all the content
@@Ramentheawsome Foresthill is an awesome area to ride. I agree on seeing new trails in CA is a rare thing these days. If you need Foresthill info for your spring ride let me know.
@LBRides I am new to the area and not really sure about when to expect snow, I assume this video was recorded recently? When do you have to start riding lower elevations? So far I have only hit prairie city and a few trails near Carson pass at Burnside lake. I know of Georgetown, Forest Hill, and mammoth bar but I haven't been out to see any of them yet.
@@Ramentheawsome This was filmed yesterday 12/7. Once our snow hits all of the fun stuff is closed until April / May so like you I’ll hit Prairie City, Georgetown if it’s open or head to Nevada and ride desert.
@@LBRides It's just making me more excited for spring, I have to get out as many rides as I can before we get too much snow. I think there's some expected for this weekend so we'll see. I appreciate the info, ride safe
You guys can try Stonyford, Carnegie hills, and Hollister hills. Tha last two are great for winter riding.
Dirt looks perfect! 👍
@@Preacher402 Best dirt I’ve ridden in a very long time. Perfect!
Looks like great riding! Is there good camping nearby? I would love to come check it out!
If you're plated lots of good camping. If you're not plated I'd suggest Union Flat campground cross hwy 49 and hit FR 93 to get you to the top and start the fun stuff.
@LBRides Thanks for the info! I do have a not plated crew but we will make it work. I'm guessing July to October is the best time to ride?
@ Yes. We usually go last weekend in October less trail traffic and chance of rain to make It perfect.
Looks a bit chilli. Great time on two wheels. No matter the challenge. Keep it up.
Downieville is a cool town road out there a few weeks ago, this past weekend we went out to Volcano.
Wow what a great ride and video!! How long did it take you guys?
We just did an out and back ride. Took us about 2.5-3hrs.
Wow that fast! Nice job
Looks like a good time 🫡🍻🤘
Any time you ride a bike on anything other than asphalt that requires more than 1 person to lift up it becomes an adventure, now you know how they created a whole new category of bikes .
Nice dude! How has the new bike been?
@@Preacher402 I’m really enjoying it. The 19 inch front wheel took some getting used too but other than that no complaints. It’s the most comfortable bike out of the box I’ve been on - really liking the ergonomics on it.
Which roads did you use fort this?
I was sweeper so wasn't paying attention. I have the GPX file if you want it. What's your email?
@@LBRides Wow the fall colors at the State Park were amazing!
@@ronwest90277 I agree, Ron! Beautiful time of year up there!
So LB... I watch your videos with relish due to the fact that you go to all the places I once frequented so rigerously AND MORE! At 70 y/o now, I have given up black diamond such as loop 6 foresthill. Back in 1988, my buddies and me were the first to ride loop six. In fact the trail maker was still on it. But I go way back before there were even trail systems and to the days when you could still ride down humbug, italian, mumford, salilor bars to the american river. Back when the pavement ended at baker ranch and it was a dirt road all the way to robinson flat. Back when the trails consisted of 100 year old mining routes seen on forest service maps. And of course, that's just talking of the foresthill divide. We have been to the other places, you've been to even more. Love you're enthusiasim. But here is the reason I reached out to you today. We were doing a run on the divide wed this week and hit some of the new trail extending from china wall to robinson flat. I've known they were creating this since 4 years ago, but it's now almost done. (there were still stop signs being installed wednesday) I am wondering if you have ridden it yet and if you have a video of it? Cause it is very helpful for me to view it first before I get this old man into something over my head. I saw the markers stating most difficult, but it isn't all extreme. Typically I know where you're at on a trail cause I have been there. Would love to witness this new trail. before I try to run it all the way. keep on riding, 2many
@@2manyrides Thanks for sharing this with me. I loved reading about your history on motos. I haven’t gotten here yet, but I will plan this soon and create video and happy to let you know when I do. Thank you for being a moto pioneer in our area back in the 70’s. With you and your buddies who knows what would have happened to that land. You’ve inspired me to go out and get this video. I’ll see what I can do in the next few weeks. Keep on with the adventures. -Larry
@@LBRides The availability up there is quickly coming to an end due to their moisture content rules. But then, I have gone there in the dead of winter when it was a dry year. There had been a smattering of rain monday night and even more two nights ago. There was snow. I still ride as much as I can, but am hampered physically. I can ride a bike better than I can walk. But I'm full of passion and not giving up. I make the best of what we have left with regards to closures and population up there compared to the old days. For instance, all the trails we used to ride through the woods are long gone since the advent of the trail systems. Those difficult trails like 5 and 6 were like a bookshelf rollercoaster. Though a club I was part of in the 90's deddicated service on the trails twice a year. I don't beliece they have seen that kind of service since and have some harry spots I can't be taking my xr600r on. You can see the sign on loop 5 just off elliot ranch road that mentions the trailbike sportman's association and their addopting trail 5. Up at downieville, I first found the trails in 76. Back then you would not see anyone all day but maybe a miner traversing the 3rd divide on his trail 90. Back then there was no signs of use and the trails were bookshelf rollrcoaster fun. Because of the invention of the mountain bike the area is overused now. But there are new trails because of that. So it's not ALL bad. But ya, I challenge you to record this new trail as fully as you can so I can see what I am getting into. I do not know what the trail number is or if it is some kind of extention of trail 5. But while talking to the rangers back in 2021 they said they were building a trail from china wall to robinson flat to be completed in 2025. Earlier this week I was on bits of it in the american hill road area. Part of the challenge I see on it already is that they didn't really make it as a 3' wide smooth dirt freeway like loops 5 and 6 originally were. It is narrow with out having had boulders cleared from the edges of the trail. Tight on the bushes and trees. Of course I see you with the help of today's modern machines are up to the task. We didn't get into any deep canyons or switchbacks while on it so they are something I wonder about how doable the'll be for an old guy. When you're on your dirt bike I can only make out 10% of what your speaking. Your adventure bike must have a different set-up. But then, I can't hear what your co-riders are saying. Ha, ha, it's not a pefect world! And we're just amateur two wheel thrill seekers. On a budget to boot.
Ya buddy!
Holy toledo! That hill went on forever!
Agreed and it was only 2.5 miles.
Looks amazing, i think i may miss my annual ride to Downieville this year, hopefully make it back next year. Dont think ive seen mostof those trails, just done rattlesnake/downie river up to chimney and down the fire road, and the whole look that mtb riders come down from the shuttle.
Nothing beats a weekend in Downieville! I hope you get to go next year.
Thanks for some fresh Downieville trail videos! It has been my favorite tech riding for more than 10 years. Wish I had discovered it earlier. I'm 70 now with an arthritic throttle hand that only allows maybe half-day tech rides anymore. Thanks again for taking us along! 🙂
@motocatfish Thanks for your kind words. You're still out there loving the moto rides at 70 is amazing! Keep at it....
Wow! Great work handling that trail with that bike and only being your 2nd time off road with it! You're obviously experienced. Best off-road ibex content i have found. Im seriously looking at one right now. Are you satisfied?
@@renoallstate4573 thank you for the kind words. I’m very happy with this bike. The comforts on the road and the amazing handling off road is what I was looking for. Very comfortable seat and ergonomics. I’ve only had to make minor adjustments to the bars and that’s to roll them forward but the height is perfect. I’m doing a 200+ mile ride this Saturday with lots of off road and I plan to film it. Look out for that video Sunday.
Wow. That looks like an amazing ride. I want to go there some day. Last sections looks tough.
Come out next year and join us. We'll get Martin back out there and hopefully Dan!
What an awesome trail, not a lot of room for mistakes on the sides of those mountains, I've been riding in a lot of places in NorCal, a few aren't even open anymore, but I've never been to Downieville, I had no idea it covered so much range and elevation, good thing you KTM still has a kick starter, is that an 09 to 011 or somewhere in that range.
@@robh3267 it’s an 09 300 xc. I agree not having an option to kick being stuck on a side hill would be horrible. Downieville will keep your attention for sure!
Looks like an awesome ride! Lots of cool single track and some sketchy downhill switchbacks.
My 2nd home for sure! Love it up there.
Cool ride 🤙 love the drone shots. I still haven’t been out to downieville yet

This would be fun on a trials bike
Awesome. Looks sick. Happy for you.
Dude you bought one! I've been wondering about this bike since it came out. Great features for the price, for sure. Congratulations. I will be on the lookout for future updates.
So far I'm really digging it. Never had live by wire before and it's night and day. Love how it feels standing and so far the 19 inch front wheel has been ok. (used to 21 inch) but I'll tell you $8,500 out the door I couldn't pass that up - so stoked to have a new bike. I'll give more updates / videos when I can get out there....
Nothing like a new bike! Looks like a solid first ride
Night and day difference over the tiger. This deal was too good to pass up. Basically a KTM 790 Frame and Motor.
Headed up to the McKinney side this weekend. Plan on riding through on my Honda CRF 450, this will be my 7th year. Was the trail blown out from the Jeepers Jamboree?
This “horse canyon” trail is now closed to motorcyclists due to over usage last year. It got trashed from squids and goonards spinning their tires everywhere. The MLT side looked like Chit as well. MLT isn’t tore up this year. I’m guessing because no one can access it from 88 at the HC stage spot.
Sick, love a good watercrossing.. overall how challenging is the trail?
@@mangopie1787 it’s not too bad. A few short rocky spots but nothing crazy.
Great riding. Not my cup of tea (enduro) but still impressive skills and beautiful scenery. 👏
I always feel bad when I see bikes out there. Beatsthe crap out of people. Waited 30 minutes for a couple dudes going up whalebone. Terrible tire choices.
Awesome trails, I need to head up to Washington

Awesome, we practically lived there in the 80's and 90's, been through on an xr600, xl600 and xr650l. Never tried on a smaller bike but it's probably more enjoyable. I hate being short up there, the ground is never where it's supposed to be until you're laying down.
Good save @ 12:25! I saw the front tire float a tad to left.
Wow... those machines too quite a beatin'!
That's what's great about dirtbikes. 10x the fun of a jeep with 0.1% of the maintenance costs per mile. lol
