You don't need to pay a detailer hundreds or thousands of dollars. This is something any aircraft owner can accomplish and the end result will be a much higher level of pride in ownership. Anyone can do this type of paint restoration as long as you have the patience and willingness to learn.

    Recently had a flight in a Cessna, rolling down the runway on takeoff shit went tits up vibrating so bad I was waiting for the wings to fall off,just a little back pressure was what it took, but for the love of god please if you’re giving intro instruction for a check out let them know. As a pilot it’s an easy fix, as a new flyer it’s fucking terrifying when it pops its head up at 40kts with no prior knowledge.

      I agree. I found my shimmy incredibly annoying. I make sure all my cars are laser straight with alignment and zero vibrations so this issue was top priority until I got it corrected. What bothered me is there were licensed aircraft mechanics who couldn't solve it before I bought it.....I'm sure they charged the previous owner plenty for nothing.

    Why are not all pilots licensed to fly IMC? When we get our drivers license we’re expected to drive in fog, snow, rain, etc. But for pilots we offer an license that’s only applicable for VFR?

    • @planeswithperry
      @planeswithperry 14 днів тому

      Yeah, but on the same hand when we first get our drivers license we still need to upgrade if we want to drive semi-trucks, busses, ambulances, taxis, F1 cars, motorcycles etc. The initial PPL still includes some instrument training. In my opinion a PPL is just a license to keep improving and learning and a person needs to be diligent in ensuring they don't get into situations that are ahead of themselves.

    Not too many chiming in here yet but I would love to see how the conversation evolves. I’m 4 years behind your age but similar situation. Lots of time spent in and around the aviation industry but never as the pilot lol. The thing I’m continually weighing is the cost to enter the industry and the lifestyle. I’m not convinced my family could deal with with the type of shift work you’re talking about and like any mid journey change of profession it comes with risks that it feels like we just have to accept. Hope to see someone chime in with experience flying for a living starting in the 40s as well.

    • @planeswithperry
      @planeswithperry Місяць тому

      If I go the Medevac route the shift work won't be much different for me but in my case I'll be shedding a bunch of risk that will put my family at ease. The cost is nuts but I spread it out over a bunch of years. Thankfully I saved (and saved and saved) and own my little Tomahawk outright which has allowed me to build a bunch of hours.

    Hey Perry! My dad used to flight instruct in the early 90s but got out of flying due to there not being good jobs back then. When I was in high school and deciding on being a pilot for a living my dad took me to one of his friends house who flies for Delta and while he was selling me on it he sold my dad on it. He sold his struggling business essentially at cost and decided to get back in to flying at 52 years old. He was a flight instructor for about half a year then flew freight in B-99s and now flies King Airs for our states aeronautics department. He is so much happier now and the 5 years it took to get where he is now then he was during the previous 15 years outside of aviation. I can’t speak for him entirely, but I’m sure he would tell you to go for it, the only regret he has is he didn’t do it 10 years earlier. Best of luck on your journey!

    • @planeswithperry
      @planeswithperry Місяць тому

      I think if I don't make the jump it will be one of my main regrets in life. I'm happy for most of what I have done for work. I feel like a switch to aviation now is like my epic peak drawing in all of my past experience and training. That King Air role your dad has now sounds like a great position.

      I have a nephew who flies a Falcon Jet for a large corporation. He told me recently the demand is so high and the pilot shortage so bad that anyone in their 50s with a valid commercial certificate and a good 2nd class medical will get a chance to prove their flying skills at most corporations right now. If they show good piloting and have little to no trouble getting a type rating then they'll be hired.

    I've had a commercial certificate since my 20s. I've spent my career working on planes instead of flying them, however. I will be 57 years old soon and just began training for my CFI. I'm going to fly for a living, damnit. I'm going to fulfill my dream. I enjoy maintenance & will likely continue in some capacity, but I was destined to fly & have been told I'm good at teaching. Will I only instruct or will I choose some high-demand job with a revolving door like pipeline patrol, skydiver taxi driver or crop dusting? Is it possible some corporation might give me a nod? I don't know, but the only one who can tell I'm too old for this is my DME, so I'll listen to him.

    PERRY, THIS STORY IS TRUE, BUT IT IS NOT ABOUT ME. IT IS ABOUT MY SON My son worked for a major corporation for 30 years and earned his full pension at age 52. One April day about five and a half years ago, he called us up with this proud and bold statement. "Dad, mom, i have just retired, are you sitting down? I, being totally unknowing asked him what are you going to do now.? He said I'm going to become an airline pilot. I was so stunned by this revelation, don't think i said anything for about forty seconds and i think that was that was the longest speechless period of my life. Long story short, he had accumulated about 1500 hours over the previous 23 years and was a part time instructor freelancing out of several different airports He had acquired a 1974 warrior that he also used for instruction and for rent. He qualified for United Airlines training program and made his first flight as an airline pilot about six months later. It does not get any better than that. The only hitch was covid which cost him his job about six months later. He had a rough ten or eleven months but was ultimately hired by delta as the pandemic subsided. It can happen and he is living proof. that seemingly impossible dreams can come true. . I am needless to say very proud of him. He is smarter and much more determined that i ever was in my lifetime and it paid off. Hope you enjoyed this true story.

    • @planeswithperry
      @planeswithperry Місяць тому

      If a person had a 3D printer big enough to print interior panels I suppose that's possible (some of the panels are several feet long). By the time a person bought that setup I could buy all new pre-made panels instead. The Kydex sheeting would also be possible for more money than I spent and far more time required (plus far more aircraft down time). Buying Kydex sheeting large enough to make the panels, plus shipping and customs, plus time and effort considerations would put the price in the ballpark of buying pre-made panels

    Yes! I was the one going to ask about the encoder. Thank you for answering my question. oh yeah, ask your AME if you can give him a "by name" shout out. Thanks for all your vids. Cheers!

    Well, I am speechless, and brought to tears. Thank you for sharing. These are priceless years for you and your son. I am 69 years old, and my father is no longer with us. Today's kids have the advantage of countless pictures and videos to document their lives. I have only a few dozen black and white photos from those years, as film and developing were expensive in those days. You had to hand-wind paper film in the camera and then take it to the drug store to be developed, and wait a week, and pay a fair penny for the results. Anyway, keep the excellent videos coming.

      Thank you for the kind words. I really try to get my kids involved with "experiences" rather than "things". I hope someday when they are older and I'm not around that they have great memories of these times.

    The names and dates written in the B17 make it a personal experience to simply be in the plane let alone to be able to fly in it. I remember the CAF had a 17 near me in 1986 and the first thing that I saw was men who had served in B17s with their families children and grandchildren telling them well you met the others who were in their airplanes and this is where he was as a waist gunner or whatever. I remember coming away with a very different feeling about the whole experience. Then as time passed I ended up knowing several men who were Waist Gunners on B17s. Unfortunately for us time has passed and most of these men who flew in combat and the brave women who flew aircraft to Europe and the South Pacific are gone now. They are truly the Greatest Generation.

      The signatures are one of the parts of that aircraft that really stood out to me. The bomb bay is it's own museum piece with that aircraft which makes it so special. A flying museum!

    @planeswithperry we need to do a fundraiser for you to get you a new visor for the PAX side... Also a bit concerned about your iPad position blocking your situational awareness of any other aircraft, it's creating a blind spot for you which could be deadly. I've seen it too many times in midair crash report investigations.

    • @planeswithperry
      @planeswithperry 3 місяці тому

      It probably looks like it from the camera angle, but from where I'm sitting the iPad is no further in my view than what the view would be past the A-pillar and side mirror of a car and doesn't interfere with my view outside the window. I can still see runways and taxiways on both sides of runways. As for the visor, I am looking for half a bracket that is 1/4 of the size of a credit card but refuse to pay the $300 a parts vendor wants for it when Ray Bans are cheaper 🤣

      My goal is 100 hours per year so thankfully I stay quite current. I did have to pile on a bunch of night flying (and takeoffs and landings) recently just for getting current on night stuff. I don't do a lot of night flying up here in Canada during the winter
