Salvage Storytime | My Eclipse Story (and some spaceship shenanigans)
I had an incredible experience observing the eclipse, and wanted to share a little bit of it with you. Nothing I say or show can really capture what it was like, but I sure try!
Then I try something a little bit different, which I may iterate on or might abandon entirely. We'll see! I think it turned out better than I thought at the end of it all (I was so deep in the sauce when I finished, it was bad), but I still really am not sure anyone's going to find it **interesting**.
You might notice that this video is both later and longer than normal. My partner and I are in the process of looking for a house, and that is taking up a looooot of time that I would normally spend futzing with pens and video games (and editing videos). I still plan to get both of my remaining eclipse videos out, though!

    The most i will ever spent on a pen, i already have, and it was a namiki emperor. A very cool pen, but i used a discount code to reduce the price a bit at goldspot. Its still the most ill ever spend on one,and i will very likely never approach spending that kind of money on one again. Am i glad i did though? Yeah. Its definitely one id recommend, i just cant imagine anything else in that price range being better or even comparable.

      I won't lie, the Namiki Emperor is a bit of a grail pen for me, but I don't want to fall into the same habit of "can't use it because it's too special". I know the Pilot artisans especially want their pens to be used. But that is certainly a pen to treasure and appreciate!

    Nice introduction to your channel! I watch right now with one eye on outside to see how the light changes as the eclipse shows over my southeastern Ohio home. ... So! Some thoughts: 1) Thanks for showing the effect of sunlight on plastic! Maybe obvious once you've pointed it out; but had it occurred to me? (My only Kaweco is bronze; but, still, plastic!) 2) You've found Fahrney's! Yes! Love that they make their own ink . . . and that they still exist as a brick and mortar. Long may they prosper! 3) Yes about the Diplomat nib. I've had their Esteem for some time now. It deserves more use than I give it. 4) What a nice quick explanation of using a zoom nib. I had been wondering. 5) m805. Good for you! I got one a couple of years ago to honor an important 10th anniversary. You write with that thing as much as you can!!! It was made to use (safely at your desk)! If you wear out the nib with writing on decent stationery, let us know . . . I'm guessing half a century from now we'll all be agog at your output. ... Of course, in 2074, I'll be impressed still to be alive and alert at 115.

    It bothers me that there is so little information out there on fountain pen friendly papers. I was searching on and off for months and haven’t gotten very far when it comes to finding out what and how Rhodia is sized to give it its smooth feel. Especially the Premium R paper. (90gsm)We may never know because it’s proprietary and more than likely a trade secret. For anyone that’s interested and that doesn’t know Rhodia was bought by Clairefontaine back in the 90s. Clairefontaine makes both their paper and Rhodia paper. Even though they’re supposed to be “distinctly different,”they’re both made by Clairefontaine. I am still uncertain if Clairefontaine and Rhodia 90gsm.paper are the same. As in “identical.” Some people say no others say it’s unclear. Rhodia paper: It comes down to whether it’s 80 GSM or 90 GSM Rhodia paper. The 80 GSM comes in bright white (classic paper) and the 90 GSM (premium) comes in cream and is smoother to me personally. Companies are always changing and adding products so I’m not even sure if cream is always 90 GSM and bright white is only 80 GSM. I’m still looking for Info. Cheers

    • @PaintedSpaceship
      @PaintedSpaceship 5 місяців тому

      I completely agree, I wish there were more information on what papers contained. Is it Clairefontaine Triomphe that is similar to the Rhodia R? I may have to pair those two papers together when I get to Clairefontaine Triomphe for that Paper Lab video.

    • @PaintedSpaceship
      @PaintedSpaceship 6 місяців тому

      I actually love the triangle grip of both the Lamy and the TWSBI Ecos that I have; they sit very naturally in my hand, and actually reduce a lot of rolling that I experience with other pens (not a super helpful tendency when you're using fountain pens!) It does obviously depend on how you tend to grip the pen - a lot of lefties don't use the typical tripod grip, and if you don't know if you do, you can try the Kakuno (much cheaper) to see. Just make sure the top of the nib lines up with one of the triangle points, and see how that feels! If that's comfortable for you, the Lamy likely will be, too.

    Good luck with your reading goal! I finished Holy sister in January as well! Still have to gather my thoughts about it! How did I not realize there is another series my M. Lawrence set in the same world. Immediately adding to my tbr... Or maybe not. Seems like I would be annoyed by it lol (you can tell I'm commenting as I am watching haha) I had my eyes on the Squire for some time because the cover is just sooo pretty.

      I think The Girl and the Stars is still worth reading, even if parts of it annoy you (really both of us). It was still a really solid book, and it's got lots of room to grow and drop some good good Abeth lore. If you decide to read it, let me know!

    It's the Moonman T1 in blue. Yep, fine Moonman nib writes fairly broad but not as broad as the Schmidt nibs on BENUs (maybe it's just the wetness of the Schmidts?).

    • @PaintedSpaceship
      @PaintedSpaceship 7 місяців тому

      Oh thank you! I meant to look that up (again), because I just call it my Moonman. And yeah, it's hard to compare directly between my Moonman and my Benu because the Benu I have is a medium - but I love the way it writes. I've talked about this with friends, and maybe it'll come up in another video, but I love journaling with broader nibs, but use fine and extra fine in my planner (otherwise nothing would fit), so it's interesting to see the variation between different brands of pen and nibs.

      @@PaintedSpaceship I bought a BENU with a broad nib but it was so wet and broad that I had to get fine and medium nibs to swap in. Don't get me wrong, the broad is so luscious but for somethings and some papers a finer, drier line is needed! I think people have been going on about Jowo nibs for so long, they are surprised at how nice Schmidt nibs are.

    • @PaintedSpaceship
      @PaintedSpaceship 7 місяців тому

      Yeah I can see how a Schmidt broad would be a bit much for writing - and I'm imagining some papers like CAL where there's a bit of a spread effect that makes the line look even broader!

    the one with tea in it is so prettyyy! And I love how you inked up many of your pens with inkwent inks

    It was interesting to see what(and how many) you have inked up. I currently have 12 or 13. Not including the 2 sailor fude de mannan that are my doodling/drawing pens. I don't know if your setup allows for it, but i really would have liked to see a closeup on the writing samples. Some of your inks i am familiar with, others not so much. I am envious that you got the Goulet Earl Grey Benu, it was sold out when i went for it, so i had to console myself with the green magna carta mag 600. (Maybe things happen for a reason)

    • @PaintedSpaceship
      @PaintedSpaceship 7 місяців тому

      I used to have more inked up at any given time, but have (slowly) found that about six is my sweet spot. Close-ups of writing samples will be much easier when I get a dedicated overhead camera and can do close-ups with my phone as I'm writing - right now it's all on my phone, and I am at the whims of a single shot in many cases. But a camera is HIGH on my list of things to get, hopefully soon!

    This year I wished there was more of a range in the types of inks. The You Tube Algorithm only served me this one. I did enjoy hearing your thoughts on inkvent. Good journeys on your You Tube venture.

      I wholeheartedly agree! I was disappointed that it was so heavily weighted towards the shimmers (they all count as shimmer even if they're different kinds of shimmer!) and completely left behind the sheening inks. They do also have lopsided color choices, but I think over the course of several years they get an okay range. More browns than I expected in 2019's lineup.

    those calendars are beautiful! I have Djamila's for 2024 as well, yay! The only problem with stickers is I don't want to 'waste' them so I almost never put them anywhere, they just live in the box, which is even worse! (I know its not wasting but my mind is being stupid). Cookie tin is such a great idea!

    • @PaintedSpaceship
      @PaintedSpaceship 7 місяців тому

      I COMPLETELY understand that fear of not wanting to "waste" stickers - that's part of why I end up putting them on planners and sketchbooks. I'm not going to throw those out, in all likelihood (even planners, they're good records like journals), so I'll have the stickers forever.

      @@PaintedSpaceship yeah! we had two 5 hour long labs every week (or every other, not sure anymore) and these were just the same lab tests over and over, the only interesting labs were the ones when we were actually making our own tablets, we made paracetamol and acetylsalicylic acid and stuff like that, BUT those were 10 hours long (every other week) and it was really exhausting. Film developing seems fun!
