    tip for anybody making your own bolts like this fellow does, take note that a number of crossbows like Barnett branded ones require a full or half moon shaped bolt nock, not a flat nock, otherwise a partial or full dry-fire can occur that will do permanent damage to the bow, because the string will slip over or under the bolt. Maybe use a Dremel to carve a moon knock into the homemade bolt, or buy manufactured nocks to attach. Many Hortons like his seem compatible with flat nocks.

      @ericforsman7787 8 днів тому

      Yes, with every crossbow you need to modify the bolts so that they seat correctly. With the Horton Ultralight that I am using you have to grind a shallow indent on the top of the bolt so that it seats correctly against the string. Otherwise you won't be able to trip the safety to fire the crossbow. You can see the indent when I hold the bolts up close to the camera.

      Nope, there is no way to make something like that out of 16-strand rope. You will have to use a 12-strand hollow-core.

    Wow, there is a lot of work goes in to this but very cool to see the core disappearing into the cover at the end! So great to watch you work, thanks for sharing. Is the process generally the same for all kernmantel rope?

    • @ericforsman7787
      @ericforsman7787 Місяць тому

      Ocean Poly is a double-braided rope, so you splice it with a double-braid splice. Kernmantle ropes are a completely different type of rope in which the core strands are not braided and most of the strength is in the core. The cover is just there to protect the core. Many kernmantle ropes cannot be spliced, but there are a few that can be spliced with specialized methods. For example, check out Joe Stockton's demonstration of the spLIFE splice for Drenaline on youtube. Most core-dependent hitch cords are spliced with a Brummel Splice as opposed to a double-braid splice. This includes cords like Teufelberger HRC.

Thanks again for putting it back up. Have lots more tools (Brion wands etc) now than the old days but the methodology stands the test of time. Stay safe out there.

      You are correct. A splice typically reduces the rated strength of a rope by 10-20%. But that is better than a knot, which reduces the strength of the rope even more.

    How do you know how much rope is needed when making a friction saver?

    • @ericforsman7787

      Here is a table that tells you how much rope you need to make savers of different lengths: Cut rope to desired length, remove core strands, mark center, and do layout as follows. The layout marks are measured from the center of the rope: Saver Rope Layout Length Length Marks (in inches) 28” 78” 5.5-14-18 30” 82” 5.5-15-19 32” 84” 5.5-16-20 34” 86” 5.5-17-21 36” 82” 5.5-18-22 38” 88” 5.5-19-23 40” 96” 5.5-20-24 42” 100” 5.5-21-25 44” 104” 5.5-22-26 46” 108” 5.5-23-27 48” 110” 5.5-24-28 50” 116” 5.5-25-29

    • @ericforsman7787
      @ericforsman7787 3 місяці тому

      The whipping is really just for looks, it is the lock-stitching that is important. Some splicers do an invisible lock-stitching but I like the whiplock because it makes it makes it obvious that the splice has been lock-stitched. Happy splicing! Eric

    • @ericforsman7787
      @ericforsman7787 3 місяці тому

      My experience with this knot is exactly the opposite. If you tie, dress, and set the knot correctly it does not slip, even under very heavy loads. And the real beauty of the knot is that it is easy to untie even after very heavy loading. I use it a lot for pulling on heavy loads, such as yarding large logs up to the road, and have never had a case where the knot slipped enough to let go. Before that happens the rope breaks. Just be sure to set it good and tight before you start pulling on it.

    Hey Eric what would happen if from mark b to c I used the long part of the fid?

    • @ericforsman7787
      @ericforsman7787 4 місяці тому

      Samson recommends a short fid between marks B and C, but if you want to use a long fid that won't hurt anything. The only downside of using the long fid is that it may make the final bury more difficult and it will make the rope a bit stiffer in the area of the splice.

    • @ericforsman7787
      @ericforsman7787 4 місяці тому

      @@MrViking10000 Yes, I decided to take it down because the newer method recommended by Teufelberger makes the final bury much easier to do and it makes the lock-stitching much easier as well because there is not as much material crammed into the throat of the splice. The Teufelberger video by Joe Stockton is very good, so I decided to not confuse people with the old method. I got some flack from a few splicers who thought I should not have taken it down, but I think it was for the best.
