The Forgotten Defenders: Pillboxes of the Shannon Estuary
Pillboxes are small concrete structures that were built to help defend Ireland against invasion by hostile forces. They would have provided protection from small arms and machine-gun fire, and their wide narrow openings would have allowed the defenders to monitor enemy movements.
AMS are providing archaeological services to Limerick City and County Council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) on the Foynes to Limerick Road (including Adare Bypass) in County Limerick.
Within this project, AMS are conducting archaeological investigations on part of the pillbox network installed during World War Two to help defend the Shannon Estuary, the Foynes Transatlantic Airbase, the Ardnacrusha Hydroelectric Power Station, and the population centres of Ennis and Limerick.

Archaeology is a curious subject. A science often merited with an Arts degree. We measure and sample everything to generate facts. We put forward a hypothesis and test it with these facts. There is, however, always room for interpretation, imagination, even error, because objects are not found, they are uncovered and reviewed by a human being. Throughout an excavation, various findings are reco...

In 2018, as part of architectural recording prior to the demolition of the N67 Mountrivers Bridge, near Doonbeg, Co. Clare, some interesting graffiti was discovered. Etched into the concrete on the bridge walls were someone’s initials, later adapted to make the term ‘Free Stater’, shining a light on the Civil War period. The object now resides in the Clare County Museum in Ennis, and has been d...

There used be military positions build into a hill near Shannon Airport, what the history is I don't know but I remember the army using them in the early 1980's for security on the Airport. Locally we called them the Gun posts and used to mitch school up there.
There's an amazing old tunnel with a gunpost on either side at the back of Shannon Airport. Far more impressive than these old pillboxes
Revisionist history enabling the state unlawful trespass on private property.....
Askeaton was worried that Rathkeale would invade😂
My Dad served in the Irish army during the Emergency, and I still have his marksman badge along with pictures of his comrades. He always said he had the map of Ireland imprinted on his feet! His brother also served in the Cavalry, and got around on bicycles instead of horse's!! Dad was a Lewis gun operator, so maybe he stood in one of these!!!
I’ll be Irish Republican and chucking my law all day long. But we owe the RAF one to be fair.
they look even less defensible than the British Pillboxes.
70 year old concrete structures getting state protection, and funding. Temporary structures, built during the Emergency, and they must be protected and repaired for eternity, to keep some bureaucrats and their friends rolling in cash for eternity.
Eamon Ryan would have made sure they weren't built. No planning permission.
First class lesson in how to look really foolish in one comment. Well done.
@@patm8622 Well, Pat, I'm not foolish enough to stand up for the same shower that have thousands of Irish men and women living on the streets while a bunch of civil servants go around preserving the context of some hastily thrown up "pillboxes" from eighty years ago.
There is one by the corbally baths in corbally limerick, thanks for the insight 👍
There is/was a whole line of them in the Corbally area along the river. From the end of the Mill road at the river, that large lump of concrete at the waters edge was a double pill box down past the old Corbally baths. As well as one on the road past Griffiths cross in Co Clare appx 3 kilometers further, appx 150 meters from the Head race bridge heading towards Blackwater Cross.Wouldnt have facied anyones chances once Fritz rolled up with a Flame thrower or Panzer in 1940 TBH.The concrete on these is minimal.
Should also add, great pity Limerick Co Council didnt tell their colleuges in the city to preserve a very unique and now one of a kind Cold war fallout shelter that was demolished under the new Opera Centre project in Limerick city under the old town hall.It was intact and fully stocked and ready to go if the bombs had fallen. It was modelled on the UK council emergency civic admin shelter of which there are proably none in the UK anymore .But no, the Vandals of Limerick city planning destroyed a bit uniquec Cold war history instead.
@@jamesjanson6129 I always was told that shelter was under what is now the Hunt Museum (former Customs House). Maybe I got the wrong end of the stick.
@@jamesjanson6129yes your right you see it by the foot path
Why were nine pillboxes constructed around Askeaton? Was there some reason to believe that the south bank of the Shannon estuary was more prone to nazi invasion than any other part of the country? There used be a pillbox on Bray Head, much nicer architecturally than these ones, or should I say less crude. Sadly over the past few decades it has been allowed disintegrate, aided by the elements and vandals. It must have been grossly uncomfortable on a cold wintry night, observing the Irish Sea.
Will this protection be extended to the 82 (or so) coastal watch huts, and Eire signs from the same period? Odd that Askeaton gets funding, when other WWII relics which saw action are left go to ruin. The country has lost the run of itself.
Saw action?
I got my virginity on one) Rough concrete. Sudocreme situ developed...
Would ye go on!! Protect structures my jersey! OMG. They are a bit of concrete and they never say any action. What about the Irish army dumping 1000s of Lee Enfield Rifle’s in the Irish Sea TII are full of crap..
Very interesting, but mostly inadequate.... Google Swiss defense bunkers... Well holy moly , I would have felt safer in Switzerland,....The Emergency meant no coffee only Chicory.....
perfect for "tiny homes".
The UK did a massive survey in the Defence of Britain Project in 1995, recording thousands of pillboxes and other military structures related to WW2 for posterity. Ireland should to a similar survey to record this unique part of her history.
Never knew they even existed . Thank you so much for sharing .👏
If you have information or a story to tell about these pillboxes, please let us know in the comments here or else go to: subscribepage.io/qwmb6m
Remember playing soldiers in these back in the sixties/seventies. Wern't sure what they were at the time usually in remote areas.
Not from the area, but there are a few near me here in Cavan.
One pillbox covering the approach to the poulaphouca dam in Wicklow was recently destroyed.
Very informative, great video
Great video! It strikes me that perhaps the structural remnants were a surprise to the archeological crew.
Just found you guys, let's learn🇺🇸
If Ireland didn't join the Roman Empire there would have been no problem. Rome has nothing in common nor is connected geographically in any way with Rome. Adopting Rome as the center of their religion(that's right, give your head a shake) meant they turned their back on the Isles and betrayed the long cultural traditions all the Isla shared. That they would fight and die for a poser in Rome is a mystery.
Love it!
