The Art of Wildlife Storytelling: Filmmaking on Skomer Island
In this episode, join me as I explore the importance of finding the right story before embarking on a wildlife filmmaking project. I take you behind the scenes to Skomer Island, a stunning wildlife haven, and share how I visited the island a year in advance of my main project to develop a proof of concept.
Discover why this early trip was crucial for determining whether the location offered a viable and compelling story for a full-scale production. From researching the wildlife to understanding the natural environment and behaviors, I discuss how this groundwork laid the foundation for a successful wildlife film.
Learn the steps I took to assess the island's unique biodiversity, the challenges I encountered, and why storytelling is at the heart of impactful wildlife filmmaking. Whether you're an aspiring wildlife filmmaker or simply a nature enthusiast, this journey offers key insights into the creative process and the art of telling nature's stories. 🌿🎥✨

What an incredible experience! for this wildlife photography adventure we traveled to an old favourite spot of ours on the Norfolk coast in the middle of winter. We had initially planned to visit Norfolk to capture footage and photographs of the last of this years seal pups as they head out to sea for the first time but nothing could have prepared us for what we came up against. Simply gorgeous ❤❤❤
Rewatching this! So excited to go again soon!!!!!!
Nice video, but wrong time of year for bears. Try spring or early fall before the bears hibernate and you will have no problems finding your bear. Good luck.
Thanks for the tips! Someday I’ll find one
Just moved to this area (your video going to West Burton Falls looks like you'd have gone past my house!!). Not been to the falls yet, but it's on the list.
@@richardgreenwood7918 congratulations! It’s for sure one of the best places in the uk to explore. Autumn is spectacular at the falls and I bet with all this rain it would be rather impressive!
Wow, that intro! Loved the visuals, sounds and of course the story telling!
Thank you the intro is something that I’ve toyed with for a long time. I wanted to have a channel intro but I also didn’t want it to be repetitive. I’m so glad you like this one. I think I’ll do variations of it going forward.
@@DrewWebbWild Definitely, finding a solid channel intro is a challenge and having some variation sounds like a fun idea!
Great editing and colour grading well done
Thank you colour grading is one of the things I’ve really been trying to improve on in the last couple of years. It’s like learning to paint there’s so many different different ways to do it.
So glad I stumbled upon your channel. Great video. I would love to see more of these types of videos including the editing process. Subbed.
Ooo editing is a good one I didn’t think of that, I’m working on a couple of different projects at the minute. I think what I’ll do is document one start to finish and publish the whole project as a series perhaps what do you think?
@@DrewWebbWild I think that would be a huge hit. I have never seen anyone do a start to finish video. Great content.
Checked out your videos as YT recommended them. Fab work! Subscribed. I have visited both Skomer and the Rutland reserve, and can connect with the views here. Great experience! BTW i am in watford, if you ever want to connect over a trip :)
@@amitsalvi thanks for taking the time to watch them. It’s really appreciated! If I’m ever that way, I’ll give you a shout!
I love the interview style content!
Thank you!
Absolutely love this!
What a handsome man
@@WildlifeWithCookie you flirt
This is so well edited dude. Really interesting to watch and I’d love to see more about how you edit to show the story
@@WildlifewithRich thank you sir, I’ll add that to the list of future videos for sure
i love your big lens
Very well explained
Always love a nosey at what people are filming on haha
Was searching for videos exactly like this one ( looked at a few ) and this has given me the best insight.. thank you Could i ask a question please? I am fortunate enough to own a couple of great lenses , the mzuiko 40-150 f2.8 pro , and the mzuiko 150-400 pro I obviously want to maximise my chances of getting " the " shot etc and i saw a previous reply asking if the 100-400 would be good enough! In your opinion, do you think the 40-140 will be the one , or even use the 150-400 ( as you say , it might be a bit too " tight" Thank you , any advice would be appreciated 👍🏻
@@jayargo2109 if you’re going in the morning, I would absolutely recommend maximising the brighter lens so the 2.8 if you’re going in the afternoon then you can afford to use a longer lens and sacrifice some of the aperture however it all comes down to is whether you want to maximise the resolution of your camera but using a longer focal length to get the tighter shot or whether you’re happy to crop afterwards and get the tighter shop that way using a shorter focal length, I hope that makes sense
@@DrewWebbWild Thanks for the quick reply Drew Yes , I'm actually doing am and pm sessions, and the 40-150 was the kit I will use for the early morning slot I'll hopefully use the longer lens at some point that day too Your reply and the video have given me a kind of idea just how far the birds themselves are from the hide How far away would you say please drew ? Once again Thanks for the reply 👍🏻
@@jayargo2109 the pond is about 25 m in length and so they can dive anywhere from a couple of feet in front of you to the 25 m away however I’ve been a few times now and each time has happened in the centre of the pond which is about 10 to 15 m from the hide so really not far at all you get very close
@@DrewWebbWild Excellent Thanks Drew, I really do appreciate the info Hopefully, I'll remember to come back here and let you know how I get on 👍🏻
If you come to Norfolk in the winter I recommend Buckenham Marshes RSPB. There are huge numbers of water fowl overwintering then, with Peregrines and marsh harries predating too. Walk along the southern platform of the railway station and you are bound to see Chinese water deer. As a bonus you can visit Strumshaw Fen RSPB which is just next door.
@@paulmcwilliams8641 that sounds like a great adventure I’ll have to check it out thank you
Stop trying to apportion blame for climate change, it only diverts attention from what should be the main focus, that is finding solutions and making efforts to solve the situation.
Not at all what the video was about. My film was about the fact that the undeniable fact conditions, climate and habitat are changing and as such our island wildlife is diversifying and we (fans of wildlife) now get to observe the natural introduction and integration of totally different species. But thanks for trying to share an irrelevant political agenda.
I have photographed them many times, but it was at our favourite holiday place, Hurghada, Egypt. I once saw a hoopoo there too. Next time you come up to Norfolk, go to Horsey Gap beach and there will be several hundred grey seals on the beach.
Thx for the efforts for making the video.
Awesome so lovely video
That decades-long repetitive mantra again, blaming all the human species for all that is wrong. Nothing else on Earth is responsible is it? Nor is anything in the universe responsible, just all humans. Sounds like a guilt-tripping procedure aiming for long-term self-destruction.
Well, I mean they didn’t swim across the Atlantic…
I'm dumbfounded how your videos aren't getting 10x the views they actually have! The editing, storytelling, a and b-roll is all sublime! I'm a new channel starting up and binging a lot of wildlife photography videos for inspiration and your channel is by far my favourite style.
Thank you! I have more coming soon! To be honest I just don't understand the algorithm yet I'm hoping to continue to build on the videos and make them more frequently and so maybe that will help :) good luck with your channel I look forward to seeing your work!
Cracking stuff
Love this! Bats are fascinating!
They certainly are!
as a teenager ive only ever seen 1 red squirrel..
I didn’t see one until I made this film so you’re not on your own.
@@DrewWebbWild - We still have a lot of them in Poland, I do hope they won't disappear.
I like the video, but why is the bird moving scenes so choppy?
Or is it UA-cam compression?
Thank for watching, The reason for this is the frame rate and shutter speed of the camera. it was shot at 100 fps and using the 180 rule the shutter speed would have been approximately 1/200sec. to achieve the cinematic smooth motion this would then be slowed down to 4x slower than real life but I made the decision to mix slow motion with normal speed so as not to overuse slow motion. I think with any slow motion footage there always needs to be a consideration about story and in this one I liked the mix of the two speeds but it does give that jittering affect with any fast moving subject. Good eye for spotting it!
Ah okay
Wonderful video, and the editing was very, very good and smooth ! I am only 1 county away from Norfolk beaches, so this venue is now on my list of places to visit.
No piece. Well done. I live in North Alabama. Just returned from Cades Cove.(10 April 2024) Like you l photographed many animals. I was fortunate enough to see 2 black bears. Too far for any quality image but l snapped them anyway. Come back and try again… They are waiting for you.
Someday I will it’s just such an amazing place.
Great video and fantastic story. I am actually heading there next week to lead a black bear photo workshop.
Beautiful videography and wonderful capture of the vocalizations between pup and mother.
Thank you for taking the time to watch it :)
Hi drew could you tell me where this was photographed please
Hi Robert, We visited many places across the Yorkshire dales in this short film but all of them are within 20minutes of Hawes.
class mate, loved it
Thanks mate! Next vid colab?
PS definitely Richard’s fault.
Without any doubt in my mind this will always be his fault 😂
Thanks
What a trip!!!
Certainly was!
Really nice, I like the calm manner of the video. Looking forward to watching more.
Thanks for taking the time to watch it glad you liked it! Lots more to come 😊
This is well documented
Thanks Andy, it was a tough one we had to think out of the box a little bit when we realised we hadn’t shot enough “talking to camera” but I think I like the post event interview styles
it's be honest, that lens is heavy, i shoot with the same one. sports version
It’s because of grey squirrels. Not humans.
Unfortunately, the presence of grey squirrels is completely related to human activity. They were imported to the UK as pets and then furthermore released into parks in London and across the country.
Great video
thanks Keith! really appreciate you taking the time to view it.
There where red squirrels everywhere in the uk in the 80s 😢
its been such a rapid decline :( but the good news is they are coming back!
@@DrewWebbWild I hope so, I have nothing against the grey ones but I miss my little red squirrels garden buddies
@@maxhammer4067 it’s a moral conflict because the greys are only here because humans brought them here and they are just doing what they do but there obviously isn’t room for both species without compromise
@@DrewWebbWild Why did humans bring them here,
I believe initially they were introduced to England as pets/zoo collections and over time they became naturalised. @@maxhammer4067
Hardraw Force is the waterfall with the longest single cascade in England, it is NOT the highest waterfall in the UK.
Thank you I’ll try to find a way to amend that info
Brilliant video! Do you think a 100-400 would have enough reach there? :)
Hi Tom! First of all thank you for watching! The 100 to 400 would actually be perfect as I found that the 600 was a little bit tight when the birds were closer to the hide and it will give you more space. You might have to crop in in post if you want to get a real super close up, and it happens to divert the other end of the pond, but the one hundred to 400 should actually be the perfect focal are you booked in to go?
wow, what a stunning video, I watch a lot of Wildlife UA-cam videos but they can become very commercial and all about "likes". This is truly a refreshing, yet professional video with stunning wildlife. It has certainly inspired me to get out.
Thank Ian that’s awesome that you feel inspired to go out, have you got a particular species you’re going to look for?
Yes I am looking for Kingfishers, I have loads of static but now need to up my game to get some in flight@@DrewWebbWild
Beautiful.
Just getting into photohraphy, I was looking for some wildlife photography tips when I stumbbled upon a video of yours . Now I'm almost 2 hours in, forgot what I was looking for exactly, just enjoying your photograohy, cinematograohy, choice ot music, just superb edits my dude. Very well earned subscribtion. Cheers 🎥☕
Thank you, that’s a really thoughtful comment. It’s been a long road for me to get here and I’m still learning every time I go out. Photography is such a great art form and has a really supportive community if I can help you on your journey in any way let me know.
@@DrewWebbWild Absolutely is! You already are helping, by inspiring me to go out to shoot more and that I don't need to take expensive trips abroad for quality photography (I live in Essex). I'll be sticking around Drew. Keep having fun!
Absolutley brilliant...love it
Thanks rob! I’m currently on the beach in the snow filming seals for the next one :)
