Martin Strikes Back At House of the Dragon Condal & Writers | Defending George From Pathetic Attacks
George RR Martin kept his promise and blogged some of his complaints about how Ryan Condal, Sara Hess and the writers unfaithfully adapted his Dance of the Dragons story from Fire and Blood. After HBO intervened he pulled his blog. The link to an archived version of the blog, "Beware of the Butterflies" though is below.

The GoT problem has more layers to it. House of the Dragon's story was finished and they just went off on their own tangent because they wanted to, and after only one season. Game of Thrones had 4 excellent seasons. Then the quality began to go off the rails in 5. Season 6 was a bit better than 5 but not up to the level of the first 4 and then it just plummeted in 6 and 7. Dan and Dave excluded book material they could've used, so they're to blame there, and also for rushing to finish. And then of course with GoT the final books weren't finished by Martin. So both sides could conceivably point at the other one.

What this means for the future? People are not gonna pay any subscriptions for 8 episodes of a serie what end in a cliffhanger where we need to wait two years for the next 6 and maybe if we are lucky 8 episodes.. We gonna enjoy it from the pirate websites and HBO is gonna feel it financially in the long run.

Stop spreading this false narrative. Martin didn't strike back at the writers, he admitted his own culpability in letting the show lose focus and not paying attention to the direction the story is going. This wasn't a passing conversation or a email or a phone call, that blog post was his recounting a creative meeting from TWO YEARS ago where they already decided to cut Mealor out, FOR BUDGETARY reasons. Not plot reasons. Not Character reasons. Not replacing it with another version of the story. GRR Martin agreed to butcher his own story so they could do things like Deamon having sex with his mom. Rhenayra and Alicent meeting face to face, Rheanyra and Msaryia having an affair, Corlys and Rhenays having all those talks while he rebuilds his ship. Condal and the showrunner would rather put in nonsensical and pointless filler scenes than stick with the core story. And just to make sure it is clear: GRR M Martin approved not just cutting Wealotr out, but what they replaced it with.

It’s difficult for me to conceptualize what the showrunners are thinking. George-he’s like two-hundred and five years old and he inhales cheese every morning, while excreting raw peanut oil from his sweat glands from all the fried food he’s ingested throughout his life. He’s about to, not just kick the bucket, but explode with the force of three AMRAAMs from all the stored-up combustible materials caught in his flappy jowls alone. This guy gave the showrunners at HBO the last years of his life. The least they could do is not grin and adulterate his work while his back is turned-rubbing their hands together with the Duper’s Delight of an upstarted gremlin-with inane and overused modern blatherskite polluting every inch of the dialogue, and profoundly demolish some of the most interesting characters of his corpus. It just feels like pure tragedy, and it’s sad to watch.

  • @SullenGhostPepper

HBO is hurting the franchise by covering for House of the Dragon. Like you said if they recognized the problems then we could have faith in future shows. They should listen to George, then shorten HotD episodes to focus on just the big moments and wrap up the series in a 6 episode season 3 and then 6 or less in the last season. Then do the right thing with the Aegon's Conquest series by following George direction with it. Instead they're all going to pretend nothing is wrong with HotD.

I know. It was a lame excuse about the kids. We had Rhaenyra's younger children too this season. Blood and Cheese was written out for them perfectly. Yet they removed the two most critical elements, waiting in Alicent's room for Helaena, and then making her choose between the sons. Even putting aside the future importance of Maelor, who looks at that scene and says, yeah lets just take all this suspenseful, emotional stuff out.

During the season I noticed channels that put out their reviews right after the show ended because HBO sent the episodes to them in advance. These channels never said anything really bad about the show, except nitpicks to make it seem like they were being balanced but they never went to the real problems. I unsubscribed from one of them because the creator started attacking their viewers for leaving critical comments about the show.

yeah, Ghost being with Jorah, and knowing to attack the Whitewalkers with the Dothraki makes less than no sense. That's a good point about Melisandre- what the fuck was she doing? Scouting? Chatting with the White Walkers?? There's LITERALLY no explanation that makes any sense. Why do the Dothraki charge the White Walkers, when they know it's an unstoppable nightmare horde? The only reason I can think of is so that they have an excuse to have Melisandre light the Arahks on fire and to have the cool-looking shots of the dothraki riding with the flaming swords and the artillery flying overhead. Why are Jon and Dany just... watching? While something like 90,000 Dothraki charge to their death? Idk. Would make too much sense to have them fly as air-support for the Dothraki, I guess, and then the Dragons wouldn't be "revealed at the right moment" as if we all don't already know the Dragons are going to carpet napalm the wights, as they do literally every time they're in combat. And it might've made sense that they wouldn't fly as air support for the Dothraki, because it's so dark they might hit the Dothraki... but they have flaming swords. Flares to tell the dragon riders where their friendly forces are from above. Isn't it cold as FUCK? All the Dothraki are just... almost naked?? It's literally so cold that dry timber covered in pitch and oil wouldn't light from fire arrows or torches and Melisandre had to light the trench with magic. So.... I guess the Dothraki and their horses are secretly immune to freeze damage? And not only are the artillery units in front of the trench, the fucking INFANTRY is in front of the trench. They cease fire on the trebuchets when the Dothraki get far enough forward, which makes sense, because you don't want to hit the Dothraki... then they just... never fire them again. I guess that, with months to prepare, they just couldn't find enough rocks to launch? There's a large time gap between when the survivors of the charge against the wight horde come back, and the wights engage the frontlines of soliders, and the artillery just kind of... get forgotten about. They were only there for the spectacle of it all anyway, I guess. It's a common misconception about medieval warfare that you'd have all your soldiers inside the walls. In real life, there was an incentive to fight the enemy outside the walls, if you could, because archers from the castle could support you, because you don't want the enemy to actually be able to GET to the wall, where they can batter down your gates, climb up using ladders and grappling hooks, or dig under the wall in order to make the wall collapse and open a breach. But most of that doesn't apply here, because it's a fucking unstoppable mindless horde of wights. They didn't bring battering rams, ladders, siege towers, artillery, shovels, or even bows and arrows. The only part that would apply is that you don't want the giants to be able to get to the gate, but having the infantry outside the wall didn't stop that anyway. Maybe if their artillery and dismounted ranged cavalry had been behind the front line they would've had enough kills against the wights to stop the attack, but we'll never know. I swear it's like the show-runners were googling "medieval seige tactics" and came across a Quora post that said "ACKSHUALLY you want some of your troops outside the wall if you can afford it!" and went "aw sick okay that justifies the Dothraki charge and having most of our army outside the wall because then it will be more realistic", which WOULD be true, except Game of Thrones isn't real, and the military dynamics of fighting an unthinking undead horde, whose only tactics is charge with numbers and overwhelm, is a lot different from the dynamics of two human armies fighting each other. In this context, it doesn't make sense to use cavalry as cavalry. There's no way to outmaneuver the wights- it's just a wall of undead- they can't really harass them because the wights aren't concerned with staying alive- they see something alive, they just mindlessly run at the living beings. I suppose the Dothraki could've divided the force by leading parts of the wight army off in other directions, but that would presuppose you have somewhere to divert them to, and that you could outrun them. The Dothraki horses are great horses, but the wights are mindless running monsters. They don't need muscle or fat to sustain themsleves in a chase, so there's no point to the Dothraki leading them off. But the Dothraki ARE renowned archers. They could've put them behind the unsullied and melee infantry to loose volley after volley for fire arrows (along with the fucking trebuchets that got insta-destroyed the moment the wights got to the infantry...) I disagree that the visuals of the Dragons carpet-napalming the wights rings completely hollow. There's no version of this battle where Dany and Jon don't do that. And that is such a good point about the timing of the trench-lighting. Were they like.. going for the element of surprise? You can't fucking surprise a mindless zombie hor4de. Maybe they didn't want to light it till their infantry was clear? That's the only thing I can think of. But having your back to a trench filled with wooden spikes doesn't make any sense in the first place when you're faced with a huge mass of bodies being flung at the defenders. But I guess the showrunners just kinda... forgot about physics. It's so absurd. The rear lines of unsullied are literally just standing there, as if the front line is completely overwhelmed by the blitzkrieg, the second line starts being pushed... but then there's no one being forced backwards? And the formation makes less than no sense. I guess they didn't watch "The Last Kingdom", because if they had, they'd have learned what could've been an extremely useful tactic, especially against THIS particular enemy- the shield wall. And seriously. Melisandre REALLY takes her sweet time getting to the trench. Why? I... Dramatic tension, and things looking cool, instead of making sense? idk. "uh oh guys fighting the dead in the open field didn't work! I guess now we should like... shoot them or something?" I mean seriously, we see thousands of people flee into the castle from the field during the retreat. And somehow, the walls are so completely undefended that Arya has room to do kung fu with a spear while wights just climb up completely unhindered by arrows, rocks, boiling or flaming oil- it literally makes less than no sense. Explain to me where all those guys that fled into the castle went. Into the ether of the showrunners forgetting things, I guess. I agree about Arya- absolutely ridiculous. It doesn't make any sense for her to kill the night king, either. What part of her character's story had ANYTHING to do with fighting the White Walkers? Did the many faced God have someone put out a hit on the fucking Night King? Where does she even come from? There's a tunnel directly from the library to... the middle of a clearing? Why the FUCK does she scream while jumping, just to make it a fair fight? To give him time to react and turn around and grab her by the throat? Oh wait I know, she tries to stick him with the pointy end, can't, so she... puts the dagger in her other hand and sticks him with the pointy end... while Jon, the character who for 7 seasosns has been fighting the White Walkers... yells at the undead dragon......... Having the Night King resurrect all the dead makes sense, I GUESS, but like- why did he wait till then? He also cares about dramatic timing and tension? Damn, maybe he and Melisandre really were chatting before the battle and this whole thing is just them messing around. The only effect of this is to completely trivialize the entire fight up to this point, and make the ultimate victory of the living army- much less enough of them to then be able to go take on Cersei at King's landing- and make it all the more ridiculous. I disagree that it's miraculous that Jon survives Drogon blasting the wights around him unscathed- he is a Targaryen after all, a true dragon, and he's not directly in the blast zone. I could forgive that if the rest of the episode wasn't so riddled with plot holes that it makes swiss Cheese look like a solid barrier. And yeah. The many times that characters are literally SUBMURGED in wights and then are just fine in the next shot is absolutely inexcusable. This is a show that garnered much popularity for being willing to kill of main characters, but in this episode most of them don't even get a deus ex, they're just *about* to die, then fine, with no discernable explanation.

Clear sign George is going to war. In the opening clip he traded in his signature fisherman's cap for a new hat type. lol

I think GRRM knows he’s partially responsible for D&D messing up GOT since he didn’t finish the books and that’s why he wasn’t as angry as he is now. Condal and Hess on the other hand have no excuse. Fire and blood is finished.

I think that's part of it too. In that full interview he did from the opening clip I used, he commented on his biggest regret being not finishing it yet. So it's on his mind. There was material that Dan and Dave cut out from the books, but they could always counter with the fact that they had enough arcs to finish on their own, that they needed to eliminate some.

Just imagine, he made them look like hacks, and a writer friend of Martin said that this blog was the mildest criticism of the show that he's told him.

There are probably more people who watch the show than read the book. But I can tell you for sure that more people who read the book liked it than people who like the show.

I've noticed a lot of non book readers called this season boring. I was too frustrated by the deviations from Fire and Blood to be bored. I think their reaction is largely due to the story not progressing very much in Season 2.

No way they were gonna let him do a series of posts , especially after he spoiled season 3, that’s why I wish he put it all in one post or publish them all at once before hbo got a hold of him

Yeah it was a long post too, and what's crazy is that it was only on the first episode. To cover everything would be the size of a Dunk and Egg novella. Too bad he just didn't at least include bullet points at the end for the other problems.

It still hurts. They say times heals all wounds, but I think some just run too deep. I don't think I will ever love the same because of what this episode did to me. It was a tragedy equivalent to the challenger exploding. All that build-up, all that potential. Lost. Kinda looked cool tho

You made the right call. The first season of House of the Dragon was very good. Then it completely fell apart in Season 2, at the same level of the final season of GoT.

Lost faith in Dumb & Dumber around Season 4, when it became clear they were making poor decisions about which characters to highlight(Podrick?! C'mon!!) and were cutting relevant stuff from the books to include pointless scenes. Quit watching after Season 5 and never regretted it.

I put "Sara Hess" as a search term in UA-cam to see if other people had similar ideas about which writer(s) + director(s) ruined season 2. So many great artists and craftsmen worked their butts off to make this universe come to life, and all these efforts ruined by a few hacks. And don't get me started on the laughable Shakespeare rip-off...

It's hilarious that they decided to link their series to the failed GoT ending. But considering the other story choices they made this season, not surprising.
