Bourbon Street - Painting a Street Scene with a Knife
Join us in painting a street scene. With a knife! This exercise is done in two parts- the first part consisting of an underpainting done with acrylics and the second part done in oils. Here is a list of the materials and the pigments used in both acrylics and oils.
Titanium White
Cadmium Yellow Light
Cadmium Yellow Medium
Cadmium Red Medium
Dioxazine Purple
Ultramarine Blue
Cobalt Blue (optional)
Phthalo Blue
You will also need a palette knife. A metal one! We find the plastic ones very difficult to get nice edges or control.
Any brushes will work, along with a (preferably) flat palette, paint water cups and PLENTY of rags/paper towels.
Let us know if you have any questions and we would love to see your finished paintings! Feel free to email them to info@ourstudioseries.com

I love you guys!🇺🇸 USA 🇺🇸
This painting of New Orleans Bourbon Street is beautiful, thank you! Suzanne🎉
Bismuth team here!
You charm really came though on this video. Love it. Would you then have both Ultramarine and Cobalt on a limited palette? Thank you.
Hi - Thank you for a wonderful course in Yellow! Are the colors the same whether Oil or Acrylic? Will you kindly share your recommendation for a limited palette> Learn from - and enjoy- your site; thank you for your gnerousity.
Poor instructions.
Another video using Quinacridone as an alternative for Alizarin Crimson: ua-cam.com/video/_AVaLxY8TE0/v-deo.html
TLDR: student grade phthalo blue for the win. Full comment: Considering that turquoise is "the end of "blue" on the spectrum, phthalo blue would be much more 'in the middle' then cobalt. Since my last comment 3 years ago on this video, i've come to use a student grade phthalo blue (WN) as my main blue and it is such a workhorse, works perfect really, no bad qualities besides still being strong tinting even in student grade. And PB15 can still give a super saturated purple blue if quin magenta/red is mixed with it. Also, the fact that PB15 tends more green, which is much more common than purple, makes phthalo blue more useful as a mixer then ultramarine. On the last note, a student grade phthalo blue would save money and not compromise the painting quality in any way, since its it is as much lightfast and durable as artists ones and also because pb15 would only be used in small quantities overall. TLDR: student grade phthalo blue for the win
Nice
Thank you for mentioning that you have never seen genuine alizerin crimson fade. With all this talk about it being fugitive, it has gotten me concerned for my finished paintings which contain it. I 100% agree that none of the AC alternatives come close to the magic of the genuine. That is why I have often found myself coming back to it despite all the talk about it being fugative. And the fact that it has been used extensively for more than a century made me think that all the talk might be somewhat exaggerated. Like you said, oil is different from watercolor.
Audio is inferior..echo-ie….
Enlightened! Never understood why Bob R. would mix so many colors at once and never say why. Second nature for pros with a pre-planned finished outcome. Tertiary mixes support the highlights.
Wow! This demonstration shows a more realistic view compared to the quillers wheel. I really like straight to the point show and tell videos. Well done!
Do you know if watercolor genuine Alizarin Crimson will go fugitive when mixed with the Phthalo Green or other colors. I'm new to all of this and trying to start off with a split primary palette to learn mixes. I do have permanent Alizarin just looking for a useful place for the fugitive. Nice video and great information.
What's the difference between lemon yellow vs cad lemon? 🍋
This is awesome! Thank you❤
Why...Wh do you people INSIST of using acrylic? It does not have the same consistency and texture as oil?
broolay^ ~ brûlé
"Monet loved cobalt blue... which is why they were impoverish most of their lives" SHOTS FIRED!! But nah, Monet became very successful in his 30's and renounced by old age.
Im allergic to plastic paint!
I love water mixable oils
Love these tips
Thankyou
Thanks keep them coming please
Nice quick run down 👍
Thank you
No lemon yellow?
I have just started the exact same painting last night just finish the undercoating and the outline three sketches. Thanks for all the insight into the colour mixing.
You are so welcome Arnold! I just love the process behind this one. Hope you enjoyed the process too :)
no sound?
Oh so strange! I asked a friend to check for me and she said sound was there! Maybe a ghost in the UA-cam machine ;)
I am going to make some saturation charts for a color class. I enjoyed a bit of color history. Seeing the tinting process with the different reds is helpful for my assignment. The video was clear and informative. Fun Fact: The golden gate bridge is painted with vermilion, which makes sense, once I learned the history behind red. Thank you for the video.
That is SO cool Monique! We take for granted out access to incredible colours today. I am sure many historical masters would have been overjoyed to borrow one of our palettes! Hope your colour charts go well :) Happy Painting
What yellow would you say is the closest to pure primary yellow? Seems they all lean toward green or orange.
This is a hard one.....There is no such thing as a perfect pigment which is why most pigments lean in one direction or the other. Honestly- Hansa yellow is probably the closest to primary yellow BUT it isn't the best pigment. It dies in mixtures and is too transparent to make it onto my palette. What you can do, is work with the cad yellows by controlling the temperatures. If the cad yellow light is too greenish you can warm it up with some of the more orangey cad yellow medium. Hope this helps!!
I think that parche is not correctly used, an paint Facebook must be clases wiht stuco
A great demonstration on editing a street scene to create a more interesting composition with a much improved perspective . Please keep creating videos. The clarity and explanation of the changes were fantastic.
Thanks Karen! More to come :)
Thank you so much for making this video! Onward to the others.
You are so very welcome! Happy Painting :)
My first oil set: at first I wanted pigments of semi precious gemstone and when I discovered how much it would cost even to get started I gave up. Now, I am looking at these "inkish pigmants". I figure I can learn more and do more like this. I am going to do my gresailles with crayola premier tempra
Can you imagine how exciting it would have been to get your hands on ultramarine back in the day! Made from Lapis Lazuli. Incredibly expensive. We are so lucky to have access to the pigments we have today! Hope you are enjoying your oils. Happy Painting :)
What about Phthalo Blue Red Shade and Green Shade?
Hey Jenny - GREAT question. We did not address this in the video so thank you for bringing this up. There is such a small difference between them! Most people would not notice if someone snuck into their paint box and switched one for the other. You would really only see the big difference seeing them side by side. If anything- Green Shade is slightly more useful. Ultramarine blue covers your purplish blues so you are really using your phthalo blue for the greenish shades. Hope this helps! :)
Thank you very much! I am Just beginning and it all is very confusing!
Hang in there! It will get easier and more satisfying. Every painting you do is incredibly educational. You got this.
I LOVE your series!
Thank you so much Jenny!!

OUTSTANDING!
Thank you Douglas!
I love that joke😂 great information. Thank you.
There is always room for humour ;) You are so welcome!
Exellent, thank you
Glad you liked it!
Thank you so much for the great videos and the background in the artists and their work. Very inspiring and informative ❤
My pleasure Mark!
I dont like the opacity nor look of acrylics once they're dry. They also dont blend color well. You can't go blue to pink. You just get purple.
Many people share this with you. I hear "Once you go oils, you never go back" a lot. There is something magic about their buttery, bendable quality.
I’ll be buying open acrylics😊 Oh never mind they’re thin.
Oh wow I have to check my notes to see the next set of oils to get. I totally forgot🤦🏾♀️
If you want fast drying.....try oils on oil paper (Stonehenge)....dry in 24hrs or less.; If using Turpenoid.
Interesting that it dries faster! I think an experiment is in order. Thanks for the tip!
Beautiful ❤
Thank you <3
