So many people have piped up about their favourite blacks! We should of a video doing side by side comparisons of each black. If we do we will definitely include your carbon black. :)
I’m so thrilled to have happened upon your videos. I have wanted someone to explain color and color mixing, you two nailed it! I just started using paints in my art; that said, I cannot afford to indulge in all colors, so understanding how to mix and which to use is so incredibly helpful. Thanx
In my experience black as a color can be great for mixing if you're doing realism, but also a STAPLE for styles other than realism. The trick is knowing when to use it and when to use blue.
Do you know if watercolor genuine Alizarin Crimson will go fugitive when mixed with the Phthalo Green or other colors. I'm new to all of this and trying to start off with a split primary palette to learn mixes. I do have permanent Alizarin just looking for a useful place for the fugitive. Nice video and great information.
I might put black on my palette but only towards the very end of the painting and then I use it very sparingly to punch my darks or as a dramatic accent in the foreground (if I need to). I used to use black, when I was first teaching myself how to paint, and I found, that until I really had developed a thorough understanding of how to construct my values, within my painting, black made it harder to get those values correct. By the time I had that understanding I had gotten used to not using black LOL and it has just kind of stuck with me ……
It’s funny how some of the strategies we employ as educational practices just stick with us forever! I must say, getting a handle on values is one of THE most important skills as a painter. Even more so than getting colours and hues right! I used to avoid black too but like you, now use it in areas that I want to push that purity of shadow.
I love your series! Being a pastel artist entering the world of acrylics, color mixing is so new to me. Your videos are entertaining but very informative. Love to gain more instruction from you two! Thanks!
I don’t use black on my pallet, usually burnt umber and ultramarine or just any deep green and red. However, I see the Zorn pallet seems to be very popular on many UA-cam tutorials so I may try it out soon. Great videos on color you’ve presented us with, thanks. Looking forwards to more in the future.
if you paint gemstones, man made objects or even some rocks/stones like obsidian in nature, you will need black, specially in a theoritical enviroment without colored bounce light :3
Thanks. Not a user of bought black myself, but recently I did purchase a Lamp Black. You do not mention this? I have heard some people use Mars Black to create a blueness when mixed with white for a grey (you say it is browner?) for limited palettes. Perhaps if you had mixed these different blacks with white, you would have been able to show the variations? I can't do as you suggest and try them all, since it is not cost effective and hence watching this video so see what the result is... I do appreciate this series you made, but each segment seems to create more questions for me than it does answer questions! Am sure I shall muddle on regardless, and find my answers elsewhere. Homework, never did like it at school!!!
Thanks for watching! Yes, Most blacks are on the cooler side but Mars leans towards the warm side. Sometimes learning one thing opens up a whole new bag of questions. It means you are expanding your field of knowledge! Happy Painting :)
I actually have a black water color from a tube that I've found very useful when I need the darkest of dark shadows. With acrylic and oil though, I prefer mixing other colors
Oh interesting! So you use it in one medium and not the other. Very cool- I wonder if I painted with watercolours would I be reaching more for the black… Thanks for the comment! 🎨🖼️🖤
Ouuuu this is the first I am hearing of Musou Black! Googling immediately. Ahh I found it online I am going to try to see if I can get my hands on it. Thank you for the suggestion!!!
Cute.
Excellent vid thank you!
Carbon black is also beautiful

Mixed with yellow makes a rich olive
I love this combination too! Makes for a rich, natural muted green.
