Building a custom sun shade
Переглядів 2,2 тис.6 місяців тому
Instead of a boom tent or Bimini top we design and build a custom sun shade for the Ruddy Duck. Using Sunbrella and fiberglass poles we construct a cover that is installed quickly and provides shelter from sun and rain. This is our first prototype and we are exited to give it a full test in all conditions Imaginable in various locations from here on out. nelsonfamilycanvas?igsh=Mj...
Here comes the BOOM!
Переглядів 1,4 тис.8 місяців тому
Does the length of the boom or mainsail foot length matter? We discuss why it matters on the Ruddy Duck and how a boat is balanced by multiple factors. We also test out a shorter boom on the water to see the effects first hand.

    Love your channel! I recently bought a 1972 Newport 16 and was wondering if you could advise me on a good book for setting up the sailboat, mast, boom etc. I have no sailing experience but if I could learn where the cables and lines attach that would give me a start. Thanks in advance!

      Thank you and congratulations on the Newport 16. They are very fun boats and great to learn on. I would recommend the American sailing association’s ( sailing made easy) book as it is a good instructional manual for basic keelboat sailing! Great bit of filming , can't wait too get my boat out again this summer for a fee trips like that. Love how you setup the jib tack... was saying the same thing a bout leach line just as you said it lol, have you thought about a kicker for the main or are the booms on those boats a bit thin on it to take the load , would help with mast bend and sail shape up wind. Lovely wee boat perfect for small weekend trips.

      @ruddyducksailing 10 днів тому

      Thank you! Yeah I’ve updated sails since that trip and they have all the things I was missing, telltales, leach lines, draft stripes etc. also very recently I got a boom kicker and vang setup to install and it should make a huge difference in sail shape and handling. Have fun this summer on the water!!!

    • @ruddyducksailing
      @ruddyducksailing 18 днів тому

      Sleeping was comfortable enough and there’s room for two adults but I think it’s better suited for one so gear has a place to go. I like the flat bottom on the beach as its very stable even when walking around the deck. Sailing was fun and enjoyable but it was at a slower pace. We definitely couldn’t keep up (even with the ruddy Duck with just main) but found the potter very stable and capable of grand adventures.

    Very interesting area, had never heard of it before. Looks blissfully unoccupied, so it's good that people don't know of it, I suppose. I learned a lot just now about the CBP, scablands and glacial floods, doing some googling, so thanks for that too!

      Yeah it’s an amazing landscape. My trip was in late fall so other than a fishing tournament I had the place to myself. I imagine summer is pretty busy. The glacial flood theory is very interesting and we sail lake Pendoreille a lot, which is where they say the floodgates opened causing the lake to be over 1200 feet deep. It would have been an amazing sight seeing that much water carve out a new landscape ! Thanks for watching our videos!!

    Been to Johnson Creek sooo many times.. My parents lived in Clark Fork for many years.. AND when I lived in Cocolalla I had my 1st sail boat. 27' retractable keel Clipper Marine. I sailed Lake Pend Oreille so many times. Every year I would take a week and just stay on the lake. A favorite mooring was WHISKEY ROCK BAY. QUIET during the week. I did put auto pilot on my tiller and that was a blessing. after 5 years or so of this and made all the mistakes I thought I could I bought a 10.7 Mtr, ( 35' ) sloop in San Diego and away I went !!! live aboard for 8 years.. Sailed mostly alone from San Diego to Ft. Myers Florida. OH YA I had adventures !!! Well I finally got married, got OLD ( 85 ) and now watch your videos that bring back so MANY great memories !! what are your thoughts on using an electric trolling motor on these sizes of boats? when you have no wind?

    • @ruddyducksailing
      @ruddyducksailing 21 день тому

      We used a trolling motor for the first year and it worked great. You are limited on range though and that’s the reason we got a gas outboard. our larger lakes trips can span over a hundred miles and the trolling motor battery lasts for maybe 6 miles. But If you’re patient with the wind and are confident in your sailing abilities a electric motor is is a good way to go

Thanks again for sharing your sailing adventures.

    • @ruddyducksailing

      Yeah the rod was installed by a previous owner but it’s a 1”x34” oak rod with 3”x1.5” stainless L brackets where it attaches to the rudder. It’s contained at the top of the rudder stock by a piece of 1” conduit. Overall it works ok and is a cool idea but the forces needed to move it up and down are considerable. It probably needs more leverage at the attachment of the rudder. Thanks for watching the videos!!

      Thanks, I wouldn’t say there was a best all around boat as they vary greatly and their perceived good attributes are probably based on speculation . I know I would be happy adventuring on any of the four boats!!

      I imagine England is quite different but beautiful in it’s own way! So much history there

      @ruddyducksailing oh yes, but we don't have the scale that you do. Also we don't have many public ramps with docks to tie to and parking with trailers hooked on. It seems much better set up over your side of the pond

      It’s nice having a place to link up with locals and have the ability to cruise with other boats. Strength in numbers
